Joe Lieberman and George Bush mailed it in tonight. Yawn.
But Fred Thompson was on. It’s making me wonder if he isn’t still angling to be the guy called in from stage right if this whole McCain/Palin thing goes off the rails.
I thought Fred waived the bloody flag of McCain’s internment to great effect, and laid out the Maverick myth capably. It’s a bit odd though that there’s nothing from McCain’s actual record — save his Pyhrric vote against the occupation of Beirut — that Thompson saw fit to highlight for the GOP base. The patriotic pap that he served up instead went down easy but I can’t remember any of it.
But here’s where we stand. The GOP convention is halfway done. And a couple clean whacks from Fred Thompson is all the pain Obama has suffered?
And if anything this convention is doing a lot of the Democrats’ work for them. Before the Palin pick there were a lot of folks who believed McCain was pro-choice. That’s no longer an issue. Yeah, Fred implausibly tried to paint Obama as a supporter of baby killin’. But that below-the-belt punch just helped drive home to every Hillary supporter in the nation that McCain is the no-sex ed, no-choice, you-conceive-it-you-birth-it candidate.
Tomorrow is all about Palin, which is not good for the GOP because at this point the convention ought to be all about McCain.
Then it’s Thursday, and all of America will tune in to see McCain get tortured by the teleprompter.
Somewhere, David Plouffe is smiling.
