Fightin’ Fred and the Dullards

9/3/08, 12:30 am EST

Joe Lieberman and George Bush mailed it in tonight. Yawn.

But Fred Thompson was on. It’s making me wonder if he isn’t still angling to be the guy called in from stage right if this whole McCain/Palin thing goes off the rails.

I thought Fred waived the bloody flag of McCain’s internment to great effect, and laid out the Maverick myth capably. It’s a bit odd though that there’s nothing from McCain’s actual record — save his Pyhrric vote against the occupation of Beirut — that Thompson saw fit to highlight for the GOP base. The patriotic pap that he served up instead went down easy but I can’t remember any of it.

But here’s where we stand. The GOP convention is halfway done. And a couple clean whacks from Fred Thompson is all the pain Obama has suffered?

And if anything this convention is doing a lot of the Democrats’ work for them. Before the Palin pick there were a lot of folks who believed McCain was pro-choice. That’s no longer an issue. Yeah, Fred implausibly tried to paint Obama as a supporter of baby killin’. But that below-the-belt punch just helped drive home to every Hillary supporter in the nation that McCain is the no-sex ed, no-choice, you-conceive-it-you-birth-it candidate.

Tomorrow is all about Palin, which is not good for the GOP because at this point the convention ought to be all about McCain.

Then it’s Thursday, and all of America will tune in to see McCain get tortured by the teleprompter.

Somewhere, David Plouffe is smiling.

Dave Letterman said it best earlier:
“Not to sound partisan or anything at all like that- but all’s I’m saying is if you’re next in line to be President (should it arise), then I’d like someone who’s at the very least sat their son or daughter down for a 5 minute conversation about birth control. Just sayin’”
;)
boom… outta here

Wario | 9/3/2008, 4:48 am EST

Maybe someone should have told Obama’s unmarried teenage mother about birth control so he wouldn’t even be around.

The best “clean whack” from Thompson, and the one that garnered the biggest response, was his line “we need a president who doesn’t think that the protection of the unborn or a newly born baby is above his pay grade.” When he made the original remark to pastor Rick Warren, Obama meant that only someone at God’s pay grade–i.e., God–knows when life begins. Either Thompson and the audience didn’t comprehend what Obama was saying…or they think McCain is at or above God’s pay grade.

o.k., this is your brain: john mccain is a 20 plus year veteran of the u.s. senate with a blond wife, a third generation naval academy graduate, and a twitch most of us have seen from an irate boss who’s pissed with your arrogance around a new computer system. this is your brain on drugs: mr. obama, a community organizer(?), harvard mixed-race visionary, done a little coke and even less legislation, dances with ellen degeneres and promises not to (oh well, you know). to whom does america belong? ask alexander hamilton.

Critical Mass | 9/3/2008, 11:21 am EST

Jeffrey, obviously your brain has been soaking in drugs……

What the hell does ‘blonde wife’ and ‘mixed-race visionary’ mean?? What’s your innuendo there?

McCain’s a 20-year senatorial veteran, yes. But, he just hired a VP with no senatorial experience. No foreign policy experience. Obviously lacking family values at the behest of her own personal interest. And, she’s a religious whackjob.

Good luck with that Jeff.

Watch out RS, that uninteligible post is a test of a computer program getting ready to flood your blog with BS posts. the Repubes will stop at nothing to keep their hold on power. Watch out for Bushney trying another ‘terrotist’ attempt on the US to have the excuse to cancel the elections.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about regarding McCain’s and Palin’s credentials. They are first rate.
McCain being the son of an Admiral and the Grandson of an Admiral went to the Naval Academy. Due to the fact that his father and grandfather were both active Admirals I’m sure he was under extreme pressure to do well and that’s the reason he finished 894th out of a class of 899.
He only wrecked 4 airplanes while in Navy Flight School. Isn’t that about average?
And Palin. C’mon people, she’s definitely ready to be president. I don’t know how she managed it but she was able to get into the University of Idaho Journalism School. It’s a known fact you can’t get into the Univ of Idaho unless your dad is a Congressman or donates enough money to build a new dormitory.
I can tell you one thing for sure it’s a heck of a lot harder for a White Girl with Connections to get into the University of Idaho than it would be for some Poor Black Kid to get into Columbia and Harvard Law School. That’s a no brainer….
And then she was the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. How could that not prepare you to be Vice President and one heart beat away from President? Why Wasilla is bigger than most high schools in this country! So what if she ran a budget deficit every year she was mayor. Its the American way…….heck, between 1980 and 2008 there have only been 5 years that this country has had a budget surplus….1996 thru 2001. So, no big deal there.
But if you want experience lets talk about her heading the Alaska Oil Conservation Commission. There she headed up the entire department of 22 people. WOW!!!!! I wasn’t sure how she managed such a powerful and stressful position so I went to their website and found the 22 people listed and 10 of them had the title of administrative assistant. See, she knows how to spread around authority. That’s very presidential.
And can you believe those crazy democrats? Trotting out Obama’s Law Degrees from Columbia and Harvard. And bragging how he was the President of the Harvard Law Review, his 10 years teaching constitutional law at the Univ of Chicago Law School, his 8 years in the Illinois State Senate and his 4 years and a United States Senator. Bah! Just because this nation was built on a constitution of laws doesn’t mean squat.
And Biden. C’mon! His resume is a joke. A degree in Political Science from the University of Delaware, a Doctorate of Law from Syracuse University, 36 years as a United States Senator of which 12 years were as Chairman of the United States House Judiciary Committee. He then took over as Chairman of the United States Foreign Affairs Committee for the past 11 years.
Isn’t it obvious that OBAMA AND BIDEN no credentials to be president or vice-president. You’d have to be an idiot to think otherwise……..
I mean the only thing worse would be if they had a pregnant un-wed underage teenage little girl or a spouse that belonged to a party that wants Alaska to succeed from the United States. If that were the case you would have to be a complete idiot to vote for them.

Thanks Larry Linn, you said succinctly every word I wanted to say about this insane ticket.

Marianne Bacon | 9/4/2008, 2:41 pm EST

I hope Obama and Biden can acknowledge the feelings in America that this woman represents. Her speech can be used as a specimen of the way people are frustrated and feeling excluded! Then O. and B. could point out that, like many others in the working class, Sarah has so far had only worn-out and unproductive (not to say very dangerous) categories in which to respond to her experience. BUT THERE CAN BE NEW CATEGORIES – and that is what Barack Obama has brought to us, and why he sparked a movement of real hope. No more sarcasm and vilification– rather, listening, validation of people’s feelings, and then an adventure of doing things differently. Just like in a family! Get over the waste of time of being fearful and self-defeating.

That was brilliant and it made my day. :D
