Wow

Palin: I beg to disagree with any candidate who would say we can’t drill our way out of our problem.

A little clear thought. Probably 40-45% of the voting population is going to vote GOP no matter the candidate. And a like number will do so for the Dems.

The choice of a VP is NOT going to change any of the GOPs who were going to vote for Johnny Boy. Most of you fussing over his choice were never going to vote GOP anyway, so he could care what you think.

It remains to be seen if the choice of Palin will be a plus or a minus (we won’t know until exit polls) but here are some things we do know:

Reagan was elected with an unknown Dunderhead, Qualye, as his running mate. (You could argue, which I have, that Bush Sr. was a dunderhead too, but at least he was an experienced dunderhead.)

As evidenced herein, everyone is talking about Palin and not Johnny Boy. Worse, any ‘bounce’ coming out of the convention has been stolen from the Dems.

We won’t know the impact until post election, but once thing is certain, Johnny Boy stole the Dems thunder. His move will appear to some as foolhardy and reckless but to others as bold and innovative, supposedly hallowed ground for the Left, but lost with the choice of Biden. (To all those who tout Biden’s foreign affairs experience, so what? That’s the purview of the Sect’y of State and NSA, NOT the Veep.)

David Broder writes an interesting column today citing the absence of change in Denver. All Obama paraded before the multitude was a bunch of old farts.

The irony is that although Obama is abandoning change, he cannot. He IS change, no two ways about it.

People will vote for Johnny Boy because he’s GOP, they like him, they have a convoluted opinion of what constitutes heroism OR, they fear or dislike Obama.

Johnny Boy has taken a BIG chance and deserves some credit for it. What he did is NOT mainstream politics (change?). Now, he’d better hope and pray he doesn’t catch a cold, faint or even get the hiccups for the next two months. If he sails through October looking hale and hearty, I think he will have pulled off the upset of the Century. (Being facetious there, okay?)

What, it’s Saturday morning and the pipeline is crowded with comments? (Sorry, but you…)

I don’t think so. 19th Century Software.

CleanDennis | 8/30/2008, 9:18 am EST

What election were you watching when Ronald Regan and Dan Quayle ran together?

Dan Quayle was never Ronald Regan’s VP. Quayle ran with Bush Sr.

DirtyDennis | 8/30/2008, 9:31 am EST

Eek!! Senior moment. So much for ‘clear thought.’

DirtyDennis | 8/30/2008, 9:33 am EST

The Eggman | 8/30/2008, 2:07 pm EST

A Soccer/Hockey Mom as President? VP to a 72-old elder w/ hx of recurring cancer. Is this a Hollywood movie? 5 Children w/ all the parental responsibilites required, including an infant w/ Down Syndrome — what about this kid’s needs in a crisis? 2 years experience running distant Alaska -has she ever left the states someone asked? Mayor of town the size of a large concert hall. Sounds like “DAVE”. Met w/ McCann once? Ever studied any aspect of foreign policy at all – Sino-Soviet border relations, Muslim-Jewish hx, Japan/Korea relations, etc. etc. etc. Any legal background of any kind? Bills studied or presented. Not to diminish her beauty, morality, intelligence, accomplishments. But can ANYONE honestly say she has the background, education, experience, or historical mission of leading America in THE toughest times in 40 years? OFLOL

Coach | 8/30/2008, 2:18 pm EST

Dennis: Boy, anymore rooting for McCain and we might actually start thinking that you’re going to vote for him. Combine that with your absolute bashing of Obama, and ‘voila’ you’re a republican……

You see the glass as EMPTY. I see the glass as completely full. Great policies. Great speech. Great VP pick. Unfortunately for you, there’s no Clinton. But, that doesn’t mean that she won’t be in the cabinet………

One thing you fail to mention: There will be many republican voters that will have a hard time voting for a woman…….

Deep breaths…….

DirtyDennis | 8/30/2008, 3:23 pm EST

Coach,

I doubt McCain’s gonna want Hil in his cabinet.

DirtyDennis | 8/30/2008, 3:26 pm EST

Bash Obama? All I’ve said is there are MILLIONS out there who are afraid of him I’d love to be proven wrong.

Coach | 8/30/2008, 5:16 pm EST

There are millions afraid of McCain too. What’s your point? You think the Democrats chose the wrong person, and you’re trying to be the first one on the ‘I told you so’ bandwagon. Yes, we know you’re a Hillary supporter and will find fault in Obama’s campaign. We know, we know, we know.

One thing you’re failing to realize in your rush to demean: The republicans don’t have a message. They don’t have a platform. They, the establishment, hate their candidate, and now probably hate their VP.

If Obama doesn’t win, it’s not Hillary’s fault. But, one should also realize that Hillary would also probably lose. You think the smear is going to be horrible against Obama, imagine the arsenal they could unlesh on Hillary.

In short: We know you’d rather have Hillary as the nominee. We know, we know, we know.

BurnDaddy | 8/30/2008, 5:58 pm EST

Jeez DD, You’re starting to remind me of Jon Stewart. :)

DirtyDennis | 8/30/2008, 6:01 pm EST

I guess I haven’t done too good a job explaining myself. This is NOT about politics anymore, it’s about culture. My point has been, all along, that I don’t believe this country is ready to let a black man be President. ESPECIALLY a black man who’s espousing change.

You keep trying to equate the whole issue to personalities: yours, mine, Obama’s, McCain’s and Clinton’s. Meaningless. There are greater forces, in my opinion, at work here.

I sincerely hope I’m wrong and that this country has come farther than I think. Given that most of the people in this country fear immigrants, think it’s okay to subsidize Shell Oil but NOT people and have no trouble allowing this country to invade a third world country, I’m betting they’re going to panic as election day draws near and the liklihood Obama could get elected dawns on them.

Jed Clampett

wow, the incesant droning in DD’s head must be deafening. Can he even think straight anymore?

Try this dennis. Open the left eye while keeping the right one closed. Now switch. Do it again for about 3 minutes. You may get dizzy, but don’t be affraid, the bumblebee will only loose you for a few seconds and will come back with the incessant chatter all over again. If you like the bit of quiet time, do it again and again, several times a day, eventually, you will shut her up completely. The light will be brighter, the taste sweeter…. unless you are affraid of internal peace.

DirtyDennis | 8/31/2008, 8:57 am EST

Thank you Jed. For giving me credit for thinking.

There appears to be an absence of thought nationwide. Everyone decries we’re a nation of sheep and/or lemmings, but try and behave differently, and you’ll discover we’re a nation of wolves.

I would have thought you, of all people, would recognize that and appreciate originality and openmindedness.

I guess I was wrong.

Coach | 8/31/2008, 10:42 am EST

Well, DD, I think you’re making a bigger deal out of this than really exists. Sure, people are going to resist a black president, as they would a woman, or a catholic, or a mormon, or an athiest, or a homosexual, or a mexican, or an elder, or a young one, or a dumbass white boy…….we get it.

DirtyDennis | 8/31/2008, 11:47 am EST

Do you?

All I see posted herein are congratulations on how wonderful Barack is and how grand it’s going to be when he’s Prez. The only thing that scares me more than complacency is arrogant complacency.

The more I see people talking about how Johnny Boy blew it by choosing Palin, the more I see at least two things happening: Left voters not showing up because they don’t feel a sense of urgency and Right voters showing up to put us in our place.

Obama had two messages in the primary: I’m not Hil and I’m for change. Well, a lot of people were FOR Hil and feel like Obama ignored them, or worse. Why NOT Hil as his running mate? She got almost (maybe more) votes as Obama and the VP spot traditionally goes to the number two vote getter. Why NOT Hil? I honestly think that if she’d have won, she’d have picked Barack. NOT choosing Clinton smacks of childish pique.

Instead, we get Joe Biden which signals that Obama is not REALLY for change. He dumps half of the Left and goes acourtin’ for the moderates. The RIGHT sure won’t forget he’s a black man promising change and a lot of moderates are going to remember as well.

You chastised Hillary as being ‘calculating.’ I think Obama is guilty of the same ’sin’ and it’s going to cost him any chance at the election.

And no, I don’t want to be first on the bandwagon so I can say, “I told you so.” I say it over and over again so maybe the Left will listen and get serious about getting out the minority vote.

Do you ‘get’ that Obama has but a single bullet left and it’s called the minority vote? He’s jetisoned half the Left by ignoring Clinton and he’s ignored a LOT of people who bought into him for ‘change’ by choosing Biden.

Besides diehards like you and me, where does he get votes: the young and the minority. Well, they haven’t elected anyone in my lifetime. Hopefully Obama will be a first.

But he’s got to quit being the political animal and return to what got him where he is, a fresh voice from the Left offering change.

Do you get it? If you do you should be joining me in warning the rest.

Coach | 8/31/2008, 3:01 pm EST

OK Dennis, the gloves are off.

Why not Hil?? One reason. The republicans wanted her as an opponent. Period. There has to be a reason they wanted to run against her, right? Are you forgetting how many people actually dislike Hillary? Are you forgetting what the republicans put her and her family through the last time she was in the white house?

I’m tired of this argument, and am, frankly, not going to see it your way. So, go ahead and tell me in November: ‘I told you so’.

Hillary ran a horrible campaign, and was blindly supported. Barack ran a respectable campaign and is gaining support, whether you think so or not. Just because he hasn’t gained your support, doesn’t mean he’s LOSING support. And, if you think begging for the support of the Clinton supporters is a wise thing to do, just remember how much baggage she could/would bring to the general election campaign.

It’s my opinion that she would ruin the campaign. Not because of her policies, or anything like that. But, because she’s got a huge target on her back that remains from the 90s. At least the repubes have to search for a smear against Obama. With Hillary, they’ve had their smears drawn up for years……..

PartyCrasher | 8/31/2008, 4:44 pm EST

DD, Coach, BurnDaddy, Jed,

Guys I can`t take seeing you all arguing with each other. You sound like your in as much turmoil as the Obama campaign after McCain named his VP choice. It really hurts.

So I posted this comment not so much to inform, but to give all of you another target you can all take shots at. ME!!!

Let me say DD that I understand the points you where making. But let me disagree somewhat If I may.

Yes there are some who will not vote for Obama just because he`s black. But that`s a small number.

I can already hear the talking heads on the left, the day after the election, if McCain wins. They`ll say this country is still too racist to vote for a black.

Maybe the country just doesn`t want to elect anyone who`s as far left as Obama, no matter what color he/she is.

But you`re right about Obama`s change theme being muted by him picking Biden for VP, not to mention all the old dinosaurs featured at the convention.

And if you take away all the glitz, Obama`s speech, when it talked particulars, could have been written for LBJ`s Great Society speech.
It was a laundry list of ever expanded Govt programs. Without any clue as to how to pay for it.

But your right about McCain being a risk taker. Like it or not, Palin is a risky move.

For all his rhetoric, Obama plays it safe. Biden has been around since Nixon. Most of the time Congress was controlled by the Dems. Biden ain`t change, he`s the symbol of old school politics.

Oh damn! I just realized, I`m agreeing with you too much. Which isn`t going to sit well with the rest of the gang, Coach etc….
And my whole purpose in posting this was to facilitate a reconciliation between you guys. Now I may have made it worse.

I really meant well. Please don`t hold me responsible for any unintended consequences.

Wow, that`s like a liberal concept, not having to be responsible. I like it!

DirtyDennis | 8/31/2008, 4:51 pm EST

Coach,

Interesting metaphor, gloves and all. For fifteen years the Right has gone after Hillary, gloves off, and she’s still standing, proudly. I WANT the Right to hate and fear our candidate. I WANT that because then we’ll know who the enemy is and what we have to do to overcome them.

Did the right hate and fear Gore? Kerry? They were laughing stocks. Paper mache candidates. Does the Right hate and fear Obama? I think not. And therein lies the danger. The Right’s not going to vote for Obama and the Right’s not going to vote for Clinton; even up. It’s those ‘other people’ who elect the Prez.

So, just what ‘baggage’ does HRC have? Land scandal? Travel office scandal? Health plan scandal? The only thing ‘bad’ Clinton did was to piss off the Right, and now you’re parroting what they said as if it’s the truth.

Secretly, I think you want Obama ’cause you’re really a Closet Con and think he’ll lose in the General Election.

PartyCrasher | 8/31/2008, 5:27 pm EST

DD,

Coach a Closet Con? Stop it your killing me! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaha

PartyCrasher | 8/31/2008, 5:31 pm EST

DD,
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaha Haaaahahaha

DirtyDennis | 8/31/2008, 5:46 pm EST

PC,

Since you seem to agree with me on just about everything, let’s just say you agree with me. The only point is just how many out there won’t vote for a black man touting change. How would we ever know? They’re not, like, bragging about their bias, at least not openly.

However, I think you need to back up a couple of steps and reconsider that accountability remark. When was a Con EVER accountable. You think Bushney’s gonna pay for the national debt? They took a country at peace with a SURPLUS and pissed it all away on the Crusades. For what? Death of an empire.

I don’t think you should worry about us quarreling. It’s what the Left does. We quarrel about who’s MORE left, who’s MORE bleeding heart or flaming or whatever you want to call it. I embrace them all. Socialize medicine. Nationalize the oil industry. But by all means, accountability.

I think the country would have been MUCH better off if we’d just impeached Bushney and got it over with AND cancelled this election and taken all the proceeds to pay off the national debt AND bring home the boys.

What’s that, eight years of Nancy. Oh Wild Thing, it’s okay.

DirtyDennis | 8/31/2008, 5:48 pm EST

PSPC,

Do you REALLY think I’d have called Coach a closet con if I thought so. It’s called gamesmanship. Coach is more liberal than me. Sometimes.

PartyCrasher | 9/1/2008, 12:16 am EST

DD,

Coach is more liberal than you. You think?

Coach is to the left of Karl Marx.

I knew you was kidding, but it gave me a good laugh.

Coach | 9/1/2008, 12:39 pm EST

Crasher: Obama DID say how he was going to pay for it. Close corporate tax loopholes and pull subsidies. So, talking point refuted. LISTEN next time, then comment.

Dennis: Hillary’s done, to the demise of the GOP. Obama’s the nominee. Either vote for him or not, I don’t care. But, don’t try and tell me that she’s the better candidate, or ‘deserved’ to be VP. And quit trying to deny the ‘baggage’ she brings. Failed health care, constant lying during the campaign, etc., etc.

By the way Crasher: Better than being a jackass conservative.

PartyCrasher | 9/1/2008, 1:22 pm EST

Ahh Coach, back to name calling.

Actually an elephant conservative would make more sense. The jackass is the symbol of your Party. Bro, if you want to trade shots, you have to be unemotional about it, to be really good at it. Being angry all the time just clouds your thinking.

Now to your talking point. Closing corp. tax loop holes won`t come close to the $$trillions of new spending Obama`s proposing.

Let me let you in on a dirty little secret the DEMs wont tell you. Corps. don`t pay taxes. They pass the cost on to consumers. Like you and me. And of course that hurts the poor and working class more, because they can afford it the least. Do you think a Windfall Profit Tax on oil companies is not gonna be felt at the pump? Do you think the very wealthy care about $4, $5, $10 a gallon gas? It`s chump change to them.

But the DEMs got you so angry with class envy. You can`t think straight. Take a deep breath and really think about these things rationally. They are playing you for a fool. I`m serious bro!

It`s Economics 101. There`s no free lunch.

Coach | 9/1/2008, 2:19 pm EST

Crasher, if you noticed, I didn’t specifically call you a jackass. But, if you want to take it that way, I’ve got no problem with it.

Pulling the oil/gas subsidies would lend 10+ billion to pay for his policies. Closing the corporate tax loopholes, which you think don’t exist, would make up the rest….Economics 101B, take it.

Do you not remember the Clinton years, and the rate of middle-class economic rise? Do you not remember cheap gas, cheap health care, low inflation? Again, economics 101B. Take it.

But, at least Obama HAS an economic policy and energy policy and foreign policy. I don’t think I can say the same for McCain. But, then again, he doesn’t have to forward any kind of policy, because they’re already in place.

Talking points aside, the choice is fundamental. Either pick a party that DOES do things to help people here, or choose the party that does nothing to help us here, and everything to help the top 3%.

Hey all. Reality check. The VP truly is one heartbeat away from the presidency. If it came down to it, we would need to have someone well versed in world affairs. Biden is. She ain’t.

DirtyDennis | 9/2/2008, 9:16 am EST

Doggie,

The Prez is Chief EXECUTIVE, not chief foreign policy maker. That’s why there’s a sect’y of state, an NSA and dep’t of defense.

The Prez listens to all the options and makes a decision. It takes common sense and balls.

You may as well say the Prez has to be an authority of domestic affairs and the economy. There ain’t NO ONE who can be all those things.

A Prez candidate chooses a Veep for one reason and one reason only, will he/she help get me elected. All other considerations are secondary.

Others may be thinking about what happens if the Prez croaks, but I can assure you, their concern is not shared by the candidate.
