Crossing the Threshold

8/27/08, 1:51 pm EST

There’s been some critique that Hillary didn’t hold Obama up as a qualified commander in chief last night.

Here’s the thing: There’s only one person who can clear that bar, and that’s Barack Obama.

Hillary — whose judgment on foreign policy Obama convincingly skewered throughout the primaries — can do nothing to help him in that regard.

Tim, are you having b_uyer’s remorse?

Coach | 8/27/2008, 4:16 pm EST

I have to respectfully disagree Tim. Hillary has MUCH control over this election, as her 18 million votes can attest to. If she doesn’t literally support, endorse, and rally for Obama, a majority of her supporters will still be the ones in the corner of the room holding their breath until they get their way. Yes, I know they’re acting like the spoiled little brat in the grocery store who’s mom won’t b_uy them the piece of candy they want. But, nonetheless, it’s HER responsibility. All Obama can do is campaign. He can’t specifically ‘beg’ for their vote. He needs to keep running his campaign the way he’s been doing throughout. It’s gotten him this far, even far enough to surpass the heavily-favored HRC in the primaries.

If they want to continue to hold their breath until they get their way, they’ll end up regretting it for a long time, as it may lead to McCain gaining election, and keeping us a military/industrial stranglehold, and lead to other things, including the overturn of Roe v Wade, and the lessening of equal rights, civil rights, etc….

Tim,

For those of us with our lights on dim, conserving energy, please explain just which ‘threshold’ you might be alluding to. In politico-talk a threshold could be anything from attaining the presidency to immortality or from carrying the bride (Hil?) to impending divorce. It’s really a non-word.

Coach,

Your hatred of all things HRC does you AND BHO no good. Elsewhere you opined that Hillary was/is ‘calculating,’ inferring, I suspect, that it’s something bad. I believe Abe, FDR and JFK were also examples of ‘calculators.’ A. Einstein is another.

So, when BHO rushes to denounce Russia, hypocritically, some might venture, for their adventures with Georgia, was he being a statesman or ‘calculating’ the ups he’d get for foreign affairs expertise? (Poking the Bear, by the way, hardly merits recognition for statesmanship.)

And if appears to you Clinton’s supporters are ‘holding their breath,’ doesn’t that say more about you and Barack than them? Perhaps they’d just like to see him reach out. He, and by extension, you, DOES need their help. He didn’t exactly run the board in the primaries.

So far, nothing in Obama’s words or gestures says, “I want you!!” to either Clinton or her supporters.

I guess a ‘calculator’ would have said those magic words long ago. And repeated them frequently. What would a statesman do?

Coach | 8/27/2008, 11:37 pm EST

DD: Let’s get one thing straight. You’re right when you say hatred. But, let me correct you on the ‘what’. HER CAMPAIGN is what I hated.

Boy, sure do know how to get you riled up though….

Extortion isn’t an answer. Especially with John McCain as the option……I do agree that Barack needs to reach out, and maybe he’s been waiting for this event to do just that. A large, huge, national stage to appeal to ALL of Clinton’s supporters. Just maybe….

BurnDaddy | 8/28/2008, 12:57 am EST

I thought Bill Clinton gave a great speech tonight. His best line…

“People the world over have always been more impressed by the power of our example than by the example of our power.”

If anyone thought Hillary’s speech was lacking, Bill definitely made up for it.

DirtyDennis | 8/28/2008, 11:50 am EST

Coach,

I merely am commenting on what you say. If I misunderstand, then perhaps it’s because you’re not clear; that or I’m a doddering old fool.

If I AM the latter, then let me expound as thus. Baring a miracle of Biblical proportions, Johnny Boy is going to be our next Prez. Idealistic zeal is going to wither and die in the face of reality. And the reality is, this country elected Reagan and Bush twice. Based upon? Their charming smile and the fact that they are NOT from the ‘Left.’

If the Young and Minorities ever really got their collective heads out of their collective asses and actually participated in the election process, we might, MIGHT, see a change in the outcome. I hold little prospect for that outcome.

Coach | 8/28/2008, 12:00 pm EST

DD, while I agree with your premise that people will reach for any reason at all to NOT vote for a Democrat as president, this year is very, very different from years past. In fact, it highly resembles 1992. The ‘incumbent’ this year is John McCain. No charm, no charisma, no appealing quality except for the fact that he was shot down and held captive for 5.5 years. Other than that, HW had more appeal than McCain. Hell, McCain’s own party dislikes him about as much as the democrats.

Then, you have a young, inexperienced, eloquent senator running for president. Sound familiar? Sound like Bill Clinton?

As much as you’d like to paint me as a Hillary hater, which I’m not, you’ve shown just as much hate for Obama, which I don’t understand. He ran a respectable campaign. He’s got charm, charisma, and the ability to orate. What, exactly, is your problem with him? I’ve given you my problem with HRC, her campaign, but you’ve yet to give a reason that you espouse Obama, except by calling him ‘young Barack’.

DirtyDennis | 8/28/2008, 12:22 pm EST

Coach,

Saying that Obama isn’t going to win the election should NOT be construed as a personal opinion of the man. Perhaps I’m too old to become zealous about him, but I think he’s the best hope for the future of the Left AND this country. And I’ve said that, and more, before.

I think he has the potential to become one of the great ones. Any negativism towards him would be for his chances to be elected, which is a reflection of the low regard I hold for most people, NOT for the man.

Believe me, no one will be happier if he is ‘chosen,’ in November. Nor more surprised.

BurnDaddy | 8/29/2008, 9:41 am EST

Most days, I feel like you Coach. Confident and convinced that Obama will win in Nov. But some days I kind of feel like DD. I’m afraid the idiots out there who get ALL of there political information from a 30 second commercial, or worse, from their uncle Jethro, who perpetuates lies like Obama’s a Muslim, was sworn-in on the Koran, and will raise taxes on everyone, will F-up this election for the rest of us. It amazes me how so many people can have such little respect for their voting privilege. If they’d only invest half the amount of time researching the candidates as they do playing ‘Guitar Hero III’ or pondering who will win the next ‘American Idol,’ we’d all be better off. My hope is that if these folks are too lazy to take their voting responsibility seriously, they’re going to be too lazy to go out and vote too. We can only hope…

ps. The debates will be coming soon. I can’t help but think this will be an advantage for Obama. We will see. })
