EXCLUSIVE: Edwards on Character: “Without It, the Ideas Don’t Matter.”

8/11/08, 5:51 pm EST

In June, I interviewed John Edwards in New York, debriefing him on his experience of the 2008 campaign.

I asked him about the cult of authenticity that has taken root in our political culture, and his forceful argument for the importance of character is particularly revealing in light of Edwards’ now all-too-public character-deficit.

Rolling Stone: Is the cult of authenticity and character we are so obsessed with at the moment, is that just another way of pushing the issues to the side?

John Edwards: I don’t think so.

Q: So it really is that important?

Edwards: It is. Because those two things are a combination, authenticity and character, will tell you how that person will respond in a tough wind. How they will respond when there’s great opposition or even great public opinion opposed to what they know is the right thing to do.

You’ve got to have a president who has strength and character, integrity. Because without it, the ideas don’t matter.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Yeah, strength, character, and integrity are fine and dandy. Problem with that: Some people think Bush is blessed with those things. It just goes to show you that it’s all in how you DEFINE strength, character, and integrity……

When it comes to politics, and political office, I definitely don’t think a person’s bedroom should have anything to do with whether or not they have good ideas…

no you would not have said it better yourself.

good call coach. their definition of strength, character and integrity was born on the PR room floor, nothing with any true substance there.

Aside from self-agrandizement, what’s the point of this thread?

what a sad story.

Sad truth is I’m not sure I can name a poitician with an ounce of integrity… say what you need to get elected then do whatever the hell you want. Isn’t that the way the game’s played?

Coach, here here! Since when is this stuff supposed to be news? Seems that in 96 the Washington post came across proof of a Bob Dole affair, the editor decided not to publish. What ever happened to journalism. Did ANY editor deem this story unworthy of their paper? anywhere?
