McCain the Executive

7/8/08, 1:43 pm EST

As I wrote about in my latest piece for the magazine, you can learn a lot about the executive talents of a prospective president by the way he runs his campaign. In the case of John McCain, this story from The NYT this morning, should give us all pause.

Mr. McCain is uncomfortable firing people or banishing them entirely. His orbit remains filled with people who have been demoted without being told they are being demoted, like Mr. Davis, who continues to hold the title of campaign manager even as Mr. Schmidt manages the campaign.

Contrast that with what a high-powered Obama deputy told me, contrasting this Democratic campaign to the experience of the Gore and Kerry bids:

“There’s not this kind of constant sniping attempt to push your agenda through. There’s this trust that we all know our pieces. Other campaigns waste so much time on second-guessing and wondering what’s really gonna happen — who’s really in charge. There’s none of that around here.”

What we’ve been subjected to the past couple of weeks by RS.

A reference, undocumented, that the McCain camp is calling the ‘hug ad’ an attack ad.
This thread. McCain’s height. Polling in the heavily populated state of Montana. Changes in McCain’s staff. Tim waxing about a number of matters forgotten in a couple of days. Obama’s ad. B-u-y one house, get a second one free. Swing states. The Obama strategy. Bush freezes solar projects on federal lands. What’s on McCain’s Ipod. Supreme Court decision on handguns. What’s on Obama’s Ipod.

I realize TD/RS ‘modified’ their banner to indicate that the thrust of their comments would be about the campaign (before the convention?) but they did ‘dangle,’ “and beyond” for us at the end, which would seem to imply, ever so slightly, that other ‘events,’ here and abroad would be fodder for discussion. Yes, we did get Bush freezing federal lands, supreme court decision and that trenchant analysis of the housing market, post-fiasco, but in roughly the same time, we did NOT get to discuss the following:

The joke of a G8 conference ‘promising’ to reduce greenhouse emissions by 50% by 2050 (China not part of G8?). 2050? What a crock. I’ll be over 100 then, and sweating my balls off … or freezing them off. Alternating?

Bombs in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Peacekeepers killed or missing in Dafur. Yup, that war on terror is really going well. What’s happening in Afghanistan is said to be a proxy war between Pakistan and India. Let’s get them Nukes armed and aimed.

Ingrid Betancourt freed from captivity after how many YEARS? Finally, some good news. What’s that? She’s writing a book? Forget the good news.

In a Catch-22 move, the Marines have extended the ‘tour’ of duty of 2,000 in Afghanistan. To prevent terrorist bombings? Colonel Cathcart in charge?

Messenger finds water on Mars. Ray Bradbury sought for advice.

Iraq letting out no-bid contracts to Western oil companies AND hinting they, like the Democrats, would like a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal. Imagine that. They want to know when we’re leaving.

Nuclear leak in France, gun-battle in front of U.S. Embassy in Istanbul, Siemens to cut 17K jobs, coup thwarted in Turkey, Sarkozy can’t get EU to agree to closing borders while Germany is easing immigration laws to import foreign workers (skilled, of course, poor need not apply), pigeon closes German railway, Georgia (the country) invades yet another country I have never heard of, to my discredit, and will doubtlessly NEVER hear of on this site unless Obama visits it.

Oh, and we couldn’t close without mention that Brittany’s doing fine, Angelina’s twins are fighting reentry and Ms Madonna has another notch on her bedpost.

Any ONE of the above I’d like to discuss. Instead we get to discuss Obama’s Ipod.

Triviality, thou art our God.

I have to confess to surprise that in this website, which is all things Obama, the spellchecker doesn’t like his name.

What’s up with that?

the executive? nope, the manchurian candidate, yes?
