McCain and the “Psychological” Benefits of Offshore Drilling

6/24/08, 11:49 am EST

John McCain is working furiously to cement his legacy as the Worst. Candidate. Ever.

He’s now saying that his plans to drill erect oil derricks off America’s beaches will provide a psychological benefit for American consumers who won’t be saving any money from this plan:

I don’t see an immediate relief, but I do see that exploitation of existing reserves that may exist — and in view of many experts that do exist off our coasts — is also a way that we need to provide relief. Even though it may take some years, the fact that we are exploiting those reserves would have psychological impact that I think is beneficial.

he’s talking about the psychological impact on the right wingers that desperately need something from McCain to support.
He uses the right word without even realizing it though. Exploit. to use selfishly for ones own eds. Which is exactly what they do with the minds of the easily manipulated… some of my acquaintances included.
They hope to keep exploiting the american public through use of a natural resource that earth keeps giving freely while at the same time having the psychological benefit of making the american public ‘think’ the politicians are helping.

I was watching the debates on this topic in congress yesterday. The fact that democrats abandoned Rep. Conyers in the debate floor speaks volumes to what we can expect from the Democratic ‘leadership’. To me, Conyers is the only one that deserves any support, all the other democrats that left him standing there with 20 minutes of time unused should be clearly identified and slapped with their decision every time they make a statement about fuels and energy.

Wake up my friends, the system needs to be purged of all those that typically work against the general public and for industry and oligarchs. Otherwise, they will merely do to Sen. Obama the same thing they did to Carter. Use their economic supremacy to make life dificult for anyone without their levels of wealth in order to turn public opinion against the president and his party. Prez Clinton was able to work within this structure because he was a pet of the oligarchs, yet they still tried to drum up something to subject him to impeachment on, the fact that this president continues unabated should be a sobering realization to most with understanding, Obama is more of an outsider in the way Carter was, if he wins, the wealthy will make us suffer.

yeah, it will psychologically benefit Diamond Offshore, Transocean Rig, and Atwood Oceanics – that’s for sure!

Let the people vote on it…if the people in said states want offshore drilling, let them have it…if not, so be it

DirtyDennis | 6/24/2008, 6:26 pm EST

Merk,

I feel that’s a little over simplified. What if CA said OK and started drilling and a spill floated up to OR, who DIDN’T allow drilling.

It’s like a person upstream of you dumping their shiit into the water as it flows down to you.

Anonymous | 6/24/2008, 7:21 pm EST

Jed Clampett

Yes, let them vote on it. But first, let them be well informed. Allow them the information they should have. How many acres of leases are now standing idle? How many millions of Gallons of gasoline are moving around in offshore barges to take them off the record and create a scarecity. How much do we get in the way of royalties from oil compared to the oil companies profits. What products besides gasoline are extracted from oil? How much of our economy is dependant on petroleum products? Is the value of the product to industry, commensurate with the royalties and taxes they are paying?

While we are at it, lets look at the oil companies expenses as well.
-How much was spent on lobbying congress?
-How much on b_uying off political leadership in foreign countries?
-Are they supporting he Nigerian rebels in order to have news items that make speculators panic and drive the prices up?
-What toys do they b_uy? yatchs? Cars?
-How do they invest that money to secure supply and efficiency of a product so important to global security?

yessir, let the public vote.
But let it be an informed vote, not a missinformed vote as is so prevalent in this ‘free’ nation?

I venture to say that if the american people were truly well informed, well educated, they would make the right choice rather tha continue the crazy fallacy that giving more concessions to the oil companies will make us safer or more productive or any less dependant on their poisonous products.

Let’s also take a good look at their business practices. For example, temperature controlled distribution. Because american companies don’t institute it, on average, the gasoline companies make $3.5 Billion extra on their product. In canada, it has already been implemented, they don’t pay that extra amount, then agaain in canada, their government tends to work for the people. They get something for their taxes besides a bellicose leadership and greedy corporations in control of everything. In the US the oil industry hasn’t because the oil companies say it would cost too much. Yes, It would cost them at least the $3.5 Billion they are actually STEALING from us.
If the american people knew that the gasoline companies and the government have known for decades that gasoline vapors instead of the liquid is the right way to consume it, how do you think they would vote?

How many are for making more concessions to the oil companies? Raise your hands.

celticfenian | 6/24/2008, 9:08 pm EST

the only way for oil giants to keep their quarterly earnings up is to expand anywhere they can. the only way they can expand wherever they want is to influence policy. the only way to influence policy is to bankroll politicians. they have it down to a science; and they have the resources to pay, bribe, lobby anyone they want…

Dennis– true, but if memory serves, we’ve only had two major spills, only one of which involved an oil platform (back in 77, I believe)…the other being the Exxon Valdez, which wouldnt have happened if the captain hadnt been drunk driving…so the occurance of one is possible, but incredibly rare, at least one of large proportions

in any case, letting the people vote on it seems to be the only way to settle the argument…if the people of the said states give it a yes or no vote, everyone is just going to have to be happy with their decision, regardless of what it is

DirtyDennis | 6/25/2008, 9:05 am EST

I’m okay with it as long as there are a LOT of what-ifs and contingency plans and a shiit-pot of liability insurance. Of course, the consumer would pay for all those costs. Sigh.

Anonymous | 6/25/2008, 10:25 am EST

Or simply just ignore it, the problem will eventually go away when your life ends… will life still be here for you to return to once they are done? Where will your spirit go? do you not realize what their ultimate goal is?
Those of you who don’t believe in spirit, soul, or anything of that nature, please just shut the fk up? that’s the beauty of a democracy, it’s based on respect for other’s belief. And repression by bullying is just another form of repression. DIG??

DirtyDennis | 6/25/2008, 11:24 am EST

I’m going to come back as a Con.

I’ll be the illegitimate product of a sordid affair between Dick Chaney’s daughter and Paul Wolfowitz. (Yeck) My credentials will be impecible. I will nestle in the Con Hive where I will fester until I become a giant boil on their rear end.

It’s a sacrifice, I admit, especially since I was given to expect paradise in my next life, but someone’s go to do it.

I can’t wait to go hunting with Gramps. I can see the headline, “Former VP ‘Peppered’ in hunting accident.”

Anonymous | 6/25/2008, 2:10 pm EST

Jed Clampett

I venture to say that you would merely be assimilated and eventually made to willingly work FOR the hive rather than the whole. You’re already made averse to Sen Obama merely becaue some of us support him.

DirtyDennis | 6/25/2008, 2:35 pm EST

Jed,

I’m not averse. I love the guy. Just don’t know if he’s electable. Somehow you equate that as anti-Obama.

Given your kaledioscope perspective on life, one can understand how YOU can’t understand that a person can be for someone and yet not feel they have a good chance of being elected.

I feel sorry for you. You are missing so much of life.

BurnDaddy | 6/25/2008, 8:28 pm EST

Speaking of the Exxon Valdez. The Supreme Court on Wednesday reduced what had once been a $5 billion punitive damages award against ExxonMobil to about $500 million.

Wow. What a surprise!

Let me off of this merry-go-round, I think I’m gonna puke!

Rick | 6/25/2008, 10:42 pm EST

hey jed,

you state:
Yes, It would cost them at least the $3.5 Billion they are actually STEALING from us.

Since when do the people (americans) own the oil companies? Investors do. You obviously don’t. Let’s make oil a government run operation. Then hear you cry about the profits the government will make on oil.

Anonymous | 6/26/2008, 12:07 am EST

Jed Clampett

“How many are for making more concessions to the oil companies? Raise your hands.”

You may just choose to ignore the question altogether. Act as if the problem doesn’t exist. Yet you must recognize that even if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Rick, huh? did you actually read the post or get to irate to actually read the whole thing. Why would you want to pay up to 30% more for 30% less power just because the gasoline companies don’t want to spend $5 million on upgrading the system. The $3.5 Billion average is at low gas prices, just wait till we get the numbers for this year with crazy prices and extremely high temperatures. It will probably be twice or three times as much. But I can tell where your coming from. You probably got alot invested in oil o might work in the industry. Every antiquated system eventually meats it’s end. Question is whether it will be an easy transition or a clstr fk.
