Obama’s First Ad — Airing in Alaska?

6/19/08, 1:58 pm EST

What’s more interesting than the what of Barack Obama’s first general election ad — a very clean, affecting bio piece — is the where.

The campaign’s ad buy covers the no-duh swing-states — Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

But also gives us a good sense of where they’re testing the electoral waters. And the list is surprisingly long (with electoral votes noted):

Alaska (3)
Colorado (9)
Georgia (15)
Indiana (11)
Montana (3)
North Carolina (15)
North Dakota (3)
Virginia (13)

It gives you a sense of how powerful this campaign’s strategy for redefining the status quo has been. That’s 72 electoral votes that they’re daring John McCain to defend — the electoral college equivalent of Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire combined.

Every campaign makes feints at states where they’ve got no chance. But given the current fundamentals of this race and the mood of the country I can’t pick a state off that list to laugh at. This is an aggressive first move from a campaign that’s got it’s act together.

The ad itself:

Waste of money in Indiana and Georgia… in fact all the southern states are pretty much a Republican given if recent history prevails. Especially since McCain is a war hero that suffered when he could have been sent home… we like that kind of man down here.

I have to disagree, people assume that the south will only vote republican however if Obama is able to reach out, maybe we can have less of a divided nation based on location and give people some more options. McCain may be a war hero but he contradicts himself, has no clue how to handle the economy and supports a longer war with continued loss of life, funds and resources. Not everyone wants that you know…

war hero? how is he a war hero? he was shot down because he was a subpar pilot who, even though he had crashed several planes and should not have been in the air, still got an attack flight assignment because he was the son and grandson of four star admirals. This is why he hasn’t released his military records, it will show another slacker, silver spooner that was more of a party frat boy than an activist or dedicated worker. Anyone else who had crashed several planes in training would never had earned his wings.

Wait till the Vietnamese start releasing his records and show how he was given preferential treatment even in the POW camp because he was the son of an admiral. It will make the whole narrative of his heroism just a bit more incredible.
So, if having been imprisoned in a POW camp automatically makes him a hero, how does that make him any more qualified than any other veteran that spent even more time in even worse conditions? This guy is a front man, nothing else. a manchurian candidate of the greatest proportions installed by the upper echelon of the 3% ers that control the wealth of this country and by virtue of that wealth control public and foreign policy in this nation.

a poll released yesterday puts obama within one point of mccain. he’s one point behind, folks. in GEORGIA. he can pull it off. if obama wins georgia, this thing is over.

Flosever | 6/20/2008, 5:20 pm EST

I agree witht he question about his “war heroism”…. he crashed a government aircraft flying home from a FOOTBALL GAME! …… along with several others. I think McSame is just another chip off of the McBush block! Dubya couldn’t even START UP an F102, but his Daddy got him sequestered away in the states anyway, or Dubya would have gotten his ass shot down, too.

In most years, Alaska would be a given for the Republicans since the last time Alaska went Democrat was for LBJ in 1964. But things are different this year. The state remains predominantly Republican, but Alaska has more non-partisan voters than Dems or Reps, so there’s always a swing. Obama beat Clinton with about 70-75 percent in the Democratic caucus, and the Republicans have both Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young running for reelection even though they’re being investigated by the FBI. Alaska could flip this year.

Jed, thanks for that information. I was unaware of it. What were your sources? I would like to tell others, but I need to be able to back it up.

The silence is deafening.

You can google mccain bio or mccain crashes and get all kinds of input on the matter. But Wikipedia probably is the most neutral on the matter.

Jefferey Klein on Huffington post gives a good look at this and some other questionables about Johnney Boy’s past. Klein probably can NOT be counted as a McCain supporter, but his presentation appears fair and balanced.

If you REALLY want to get ‘dirt,’ try Dickipedia. I’d never heard of it, but it’s pretty amusing. At least the part on Johnney Boy.

DD,
Thanks. I checked Wiki and Dicki. You’re right – Dicki is Funny!

Jed,

I can’t find Obama’s military service record on wikipedia, can you tell me where I might find it?

Thanks in advance

Too bad the writer of the article still doesn’t know the difference between it’s and its.

I don’t believe you will find it because he doesn’t have one. You see, in a free nation, where you are not compelled to learn the ways of terrorism, destruction and murder, a true christian will avoid having those characteristics imposed on him. A true Christian will avoid being in a military setting where his commanders may order him to rape and kill and he will have to do it because he is beholden to the leadership structure.
I can discern that your questioning is meant to imply that Sen. Obama doesn’t have the qualifications to be president because he has not ’served his country’ by becoming a puppet of it’s industrial elites by joining the military.

I ask, what about military service makes one more qualified for the presidency? Is it the inculcated… nay, brain washed in, sense of belonging to something rather than individuality? Is it the ability to follow orders from a superior without question to legality or morality? Is it the fact that military training eliminates the natural aversion to murder that every human is born with? Is it that military service makes murder and terrorism acceptable forms of diplomacy?
What is it about military training and service that in your mind would make the senator more qualified than someone who has not?
