The Branding of John McCain

6/6/08, 8:34 pm EST

The branding of John McCain is an embarrassing work in progress.

First, in the primary season, there was Lord-Vader-esque Black McCain:

… which they still revive in ads featuring the campaign’s trademark waning gibbous headshot:

As the general election contest approached, McCain entered his blue period:

Followed, in a pique of greenwashing, by McCain Vert:

This week, has been chaotic, as we’ve seen Disco McCain:

and at least two variations of Rip-Off Obama McCain:

In green:

…and waning gibbous:

These jokers have no idea what they’re selling. And if they can’t even get the marketing right, it’s alarming to think how this kind of I-dunno…Let’s-try-this! approach might translate into governing.

Well, at least he’s willing to admit when he’s failed and try something new. Maybe? ;-)

McCain is the biggest flip flopper in the US Senate. I don’t know which is more embarrassing… his Senate or military record. The guy graduated 10th from the bottom of 900 in the Navy and he blew up his own aircraft carrier. He was and is a royally arrogant screwup with a powerful daddy (Navy admiral). Remind us of anyone? He never earned his own fortune, he married it after divorcing his own wife after her car accident.

This spoiled brat is dangerously incompetent on matters of war and the economy.

** John McBush won’t surrender South Iraqi-Nam to North Iran’s Sunni gooks **

John you old conformist maverick, you’ve not had a mental health exam since 1999. The Navy declared you mentally fit, but PTSD wasn’t a big deal to them then, or now.

Twenty percent of service members returning from recent deployment suffer from PTSD. None of them has endured what you endured. Five years in a North Vietnamese prison cell subjected to torture and subject at any time to execution, it must have created still festering psychological wounds.

Little men in black pajamas. Those “gooks” haunt you still, don’t they John? Beach Boys’ tunes pop up in your head singing ‘Barbara Ann’ as ‘Bomb Iran.’ No one can presume to question your authority on military issues. Can they John? You know-it-all. Your hair-trigger smart ass replies, your well-documented temper tantrums, your mood swings.

Perpetual war. Viet Nam never stopped did it, John? Kill the gooks! Bomb Hanoi! Never surrender! There’s light at the end of the tunnel. Cambodia’s next. America united can never be defeated. Forty years drop away like it was yesterday, don’t they John? For you, it’s still 1968.

But it’s 2008 in Iraq. And, blind militarism is all you know. Iran’s next, right Sideshow John? We’re forced to share your disgusting atavistic delusions — for 5 more months. John, on the tube you exhibit that glaze of incomprehension, just like Ronnie did.

Your clouded memory, your non-rational irritability, and unwavering bellicosity amount to a mental health disqualification for high executive office.

Go back to the Senate, John, poshest elder care center tax dollars can maintain.

Wait a minute. Brand management is hard work!

Just because McCain can’t manage his own campaign brand doesn’t mean he won’t be able to manage the world’s largest economy, the world’s largest military, or various simple projects like health care reform or energy policy.

That’s cake compared to brand management.

Joel | 6/7/2008, 4:36 pm EST

That last idea looks like TGI Friday’s, for pete’s sake.

Intercaust | 6/7/2008, 4:43 pm EST

His next slogan will be,
“‘You Obama! Get off my lawn!!’
I’m John W. McSame and I approve of this message because our country needs a president that is exactly 95% the same as the last one.”

Gunti | 6/7/2008, 5:24 pm EST

HAHAHA! Where’s McCain’s pieces of flair in the bottom image? He looks like he’s welcoming everyone to TGI Friday’s! “Smoking or non? Booth or table? At the bar? Appetizers are half-price until 7pm!”

nick | 6/7/2008, 5:26 pm EST

I surely must have missed that. When exactly did John McCain admit he was wrong?

nick | 6/7/2008, 5:27 pm EST

I surely must have missed that. When exactly did John McCain admit he failed?

John Lemmings | 6/7/2008, 6:13 pm EST

Obama befriended and mingled with dozens of scumbag people during his political career in Chicago, only having to distance himself from them once the campaign took heat for them. Who you associate with shows what kind of person you really are.

Obama also supported the politically-safer strategy early on in Iraq that led it to becoming a disaster, while McCain harped from the beginning to take the more modern approach that occurred under Petraeus, which has been a huge success compared to the absolute mess that our plans in Iraq caused for the years before.

JarHead | 6/7/2008, 6:31 pm EST

John McCain looks like he could use some Polident.

John Lemmings | 6/7/2008, 7:01 pm EST

The way Obama says that he wants to bring the parties together and work towards more cooperative policies is also a complete joke, since he routinely voted 96/97% with the democrats, versus McCain who was in the 80s. It is laughable when this article states that McCain trying to market himself in various ways is a sign that he might do the same for office. The Democrats instead just pander to everyone at with senseless vague rhetoric, scared to offend anyone.

Howard | 6/7/2008, 9:49 pm EST

It seems like they’re using that “waning gibbous” effect so we can’t see the cancer scars on the side of his face.

Anonymous | 6/8/2008, 1:29 am EST

It’s raining McCain!

Mark | 6/8/2008, 3:57 am EST

Dear Mr. Lemmings,

Look! Cliff! Run! Go!

Thank You.

John Lemmings | 6/8/2008, 6:20 am EST

Mark: “Uh oh, someone making valid points against my lord and savior Obama. Time to make a wacky reply to curtail me having to make any actual argument!”

Jeugenen is just thoroughly insane.

If you are surprised and angry that a political campaign is changing its image to best grab voters, you are a naive moron failing to grasp how the world works.

‘And if they can’t even get the marketing right, it’s alarming to think how this kind of I-dunno…Let’s-try-this! approach might translate into governing.’

This is completely laughable, coming from and being associated with what is usually a somewhat respectable and well done publication. It sounds like something that would be blogged by some 21 year old kid in the midst of college, yelling from their ivory tower, and coming off as a complete shill who’s just grasping to defend their pal Barry. The post below this, trying to get outraged over a typo likely made by some webmaster levels below McCain is just childish.

Rolling Stone, do a review of what your staffers are putting online. Viable political discussion is great to see, but this amateur content that would not even be viewed on someone’s livejournal is simply a joke.

Obama is just another candidate, playing the same political game that McCain is, not some magical revolutionary who is going to hug the world and make it a happy place. The fight is going to come down to real issues, not the colors of a website which will be viewed by a minority of the overall voting populace. Obama supporters trying to stroke the ego of other diehard Obama supporters is fruitless, give us real substance!

American Pundit Fighting | 6/8/2008, 11:56 am EST

Very astute! I noticed that too, Obama’s logo is so stark and memorable that it’s hard to match, McCain is not even close. Obama is practising minimalism in his presentation but it’s working to great effect.
McCain’s logo was obviously trying to be militaristic… it might work if the main colors were softer, sand like. It’s risky as the Sepia look might make him look older but he needs to start owning his image. Play up the fact you’re older, play up the fact you’re a terrible speaker, play up the fact you’re a joker. Play it straight down the middle.

celticfenian | 6/8/2008, 12:18 pm EST

jeug – you need to stop using your retarded ‘neo-liberal’, ‘proto-lieberman’, ‘pseudo-mcccain’, type labels. you come off as a total kook ! why don’t you try and write like a human being? you’ll be way more effective.

when you list the relevant facts you do sound somewhat coherent,…so good job! but then you go off on those weird rants that make sense to noone but yourself.

tighten up!

Coach | 6/8/2008, 12:45 pm EST

Hey Lemmings: No republican senator voted party line in the last two years more than McCain. Get your facts straight.

Also, can you prove that the ‘politically-safer’ direction in Iraq has made it a shambles? Obama was against it from the beginning. So, how is Iraq HIS fault? And, another thing: If Iraq has calmed down so much, according to Repukelickans, then why can’t we leave??? Oh yeah, the political thing that you villified Lemmings, is why. Until there’s political reconciliation, we’re not going to be able to go anywhere, to the delight of the repukelickers.

Lemmings: Get off your high horse and come down to reality for one second. McCain is EXACTLY another four years of Bush. He has reformed his ideology to match Bush’s, either to win votes from the radical right, or because that’s who he is.

It’s unbelieveable the lengths people will go to TRY to smear Obama. Rezko? Nice try. Wright? Yeah, right. What else? Did his grandfather have artillery deals with Hitler? Does his family have a working relationship with the bin Ladens? Is his family in bed with Saudi Arabia? Are his future cabinet members linked to some crazy fascist thinktank?

Keep trying haters. There’s a reason over 18 million people voted for him in the primaries, not counting the caucuses.

Jeugenen | 6/9/2008, 1:03 pm EST

McCain’s ideological support, like Bush’s, comes from Podhoretz Neo-Cons and Leiberman Neo-Libs, not Reagan Conservatives nor Kennedy Liberals. These supporters have the same Neo-Marxist roots, which originated over 60 years ago, when millions of defeated Marxist immigrants from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were admitted by America, as desperate persecuted refugees; after all of the European nations refused to take them.

By the McCarthy Era, many of these pathetic refugees had gotten good government positions; and, by way of showing their deep gratitude to the American People, they systematically corrupted the government and endangered national security, by working as spies for Marxist Russia. The most notorious of these spies, the Rosenbergs, were executed for treason. This had the intended beneficial effect of stopping most of the dangerous spying; but it had the unintended consequence of causing these Marxist refugees to seek social and economic power by pretentiously assimilating into the Conservative Republican and Liberal Democrat parties; where they quickly mutated into the Neo-Conservatives and Neo-Liberals, with insidious ideological opposition to traditional Christian culture and Constitutional principles. The result of the subversive influence by these virulent Crypto-Neo-Marxists in the government, schools, news media and entertainment media was the increasingly intolerably cultural degeneration that has led up to the American Cultural War.

Podhoretz Neo-Con and Leiberman Neo-Lib ideology notoriously instills subversive contempt for patriotism, defensive war, historical accuracy, Christian culture, and Constitutional rule, United Nations resolutions, and Conservative Reagan Republicans and Liberal Kennedy Democrats.

All of this contempt is transparently motivated by a dogmatic belief in gaining an advantage by insubordination to the practices of national religious and governmental traditions, which grant the inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These Crypto-Neo-Marxists, like their failed Marxists predecessors, imagine that they can somehow create their own new superior civilization, if they first destroy the traditional allegiance to the nuclear family, Christianity, nationalism, and the Constitution.

Israel, which these Marxists refugees have had all to themselves for 60 years, to do their utopian social engineering, in their own artificially created state, is notoriously poorly governed and heavily subsidized by the Diaspora; and the People of Israel, once the most widely pitied in the World, have come to justly earn the distinction of now being the most universally despised, condemned, and threatened with annihilation.

In this crucial 2008 presidential battle of the American Cultural War shall the Reagan Conservatives and the Kennedy Liberals finally combine forces against these desperately united Podhoretz Neo-Cons and Leiberman Neo-Libs supporting Insane McCain; or shall they continue to suffer ideological corruption of their Republican and Democrat parties, subversion of their traditional Christian culture and Constitutional rule, pernicious governmental strife, and the illegal and un-patriotic sacrifice of the wealth and blood of the American People to sole benefit of Israel?

With Leiberman Neo-Lib Princess Hillary burnt at stake by the Kennedy Liberal Democratic Party, shall Podhoretz Neo-Con McCain have his final date for the presidency, or for the Reagan Conservative Republican firing squad?

Jed Clampett

could someone please explain to me how getting shot down and spending time in a POW camp automatically makes you a hero? Is hero just a lable we slap on anyone we wish to honor, regardless of their actions before a particularly laudable event?
I always thought a hero was one who selflessly put his line on the line in order to protect the innocents, this is outside of a job description, which is a paid profession which involves dangerous situations, not merely someone who endures hardship because they failed to avoid a missile. Frankly, it’s almost as absurd as calling murderers martyrs.
