Mississippi Churning

5/14/08, 1:30 am EST

Hillary netted 12 delegates tonight. Big-time win. Little-time impact.

But the bigger electoral story tonight is the victory of Democrat Travis Childers in a special election in a Mississippi district that gave George W. Bush 63 percent of its vote in 2004.

Basically this is a safe. fucking. seat. No way a Democrat should have been competitive. Much less won. As Kos points out, there are 110 or so GOP districts that are less conservative than this one. Long story short, the Republican minority in the House could be in for a world ‘o hurt in November.

And NRCC chair Tom Cole knows it, sending out a gloomy email tonight telling his colleagues to brace themselves: “I encourage all Republican candidates, whether incumbents or challengers, to take stock of their campaigns and position themselves for challenging campaigns this fall…”

Tis interesting. Of late speculation has been rife with gloom and doom for the Dems. It would seem that people who have ‘careers’ devoted to commenting on politics are quite susceptible to overlooking forests because of the quantity of trees.

I am taken with the image of one chicken finding a bug and a raft of others rushing to the site, perhaps the source for “The Sky Is Falling” fable. All of the modern depiction of ‘journalism’ seems powerless against this phenomenon with political pundits having elevated their practice of it to religious fervor. ‘Momentum’ is one of the more classic examples of the ‘bugs’ which attracts a flock of political reporters. There is but one ‘bug’ yet it appears as if the flock is devouring a colony.

I, for one, believe what we have witnessed and will appear to witness for the next couple of months is a positive for both the Dem party and both candidates. HRC is soldiering on, to the credit of her and her supporters, and BHC is maturing in the process. Moreover, the country is able to bear witness to the maturation.

I can not envision a scenario where HRC accepts second fiddle nor can I see her presence being much of a benefit. However, I cringe when I see the names proffered up as potential running mates. If Obama is the agent of change, then aligning himself with an establishment figure is NOT going to work.

Now, if George Clooney were to accept the VP nomination, part time, of course, then I can see some progress being made towards that holy grail of change, whatever the term might mean to one and all.
