Barr: A Nader or a Buchanan?

5/13/08, 2:38 am EST

Libertarian Bob Barr, the one-time crackpot Clinton impeachment ringleader who has taken on a veneer of seriousness amid the civil liberties abuses and unholy spending of the Bush years, is launching what could be a serious third party bid for the presidency.

Serious, not as in viable, but serious in that he could choose to do some damage to John McCain.

My gut tells me thought that Barr has got enough of the loyal GOP soldier in him… despite his bid for the hearts and minds of Libertarians… that he’s likely to take the Pat Buchanan path — focusing his campaign in solid Obama states — rather than attempt to Naderize McCain in, say, Virginia, or Colorado.

Jed Clampett

did anyone see that awesome daily show with Douglas Fithe last night? Reminded me of Bill Moyers this weekend, he had a british investigator who will probably be giving evidence about this administrations actions when the time comes. He was saying that what astounded him in his years of evidence gathering was the gall, the sense of entitlement of the folks in the administration. They deflect responsability to others and refuse to accept the truths that were there for all to see. I’m hopeful that we will see these people go to trial, and the indications are arising that the tide is turning that way. Barring a win of the presidency once again by the ‘myopic elites’ we may see a quick turnaround to our problems.
Have not seen the entire Feith interview online, but will when I get a chance. Did anyone else see it? What impressions did you get from the guy?

I doubt the Libertarian Party will nominate him.

I was impressed that Jon Stewart actually stuck it to someone for once.

It would be nice to see the Republican Party treat Barr’s candidacy with more tact and grace than the Democrats did with Ralph Nader. Unfortunately, the jury will be out on that one for a while.

I disagree. Barr has been becoming more and more libertarian minded over the years, even working with the ACLU. Libertarians don’t have a soft-spot for the Republican Party, and don’t see them as any less evil than the Democrats — save for the rare exceptions like Ron Paul.

RS,
One question, multi part…. indulge me if you will.

Why are you supporting and endorsing Barack Obama??? As a former collage media major and in the business of photojournalism for the last 15 years, I am dumbfounded by his seemingly blind support. Every musician, celebrity and public figure I once admired, are endorsing Obama for the democratic nominee. I have been watching this “race” unfold for many months and can not fogure out what this man stands for or what his message is. He talks a lot but says NOTHING. At least Hillary Clinton has an exemplory record of achievments as First Lady, one can sum up and deduct a logical opinion from. She was the second most productive First Lady in our history (the first Eleanor Roosevelt) and the first to have an office in the West Wing. She and her husband have ALWAY championed for the middle and lower classes. What has Obama ever done or said????? Besides help create a bill to build a destructive and controversial fence between the Us and Mexico. An ugly, useless fence that will go through university, communities, Us native Indian reservations and destroy huge ecosystems of precious animals. This ridiculous fence is also costing US taxpayers millions, if not billion of dollars.
I really want to know why so many influential, public people are supporting this previous ghost of an unaccomplished man. As a lifetime Democrat I do not want my livelihood and safety in the hands of this unexperienced man. I’d rather McCain or anybody but him.
Just PLEASE tell me what specifically about him and/or him plans for this fledgling economy and country attracts you enough to publicly endorse him? If he was a white man with the same lack of experience and non-existent record of achievements would he have gotten this far? Would you still support him? This is no joke, I really want to know. I must have I missed something.

Dumbfounded and disillusioned democrat,

By the way I am canceling my subscription to RS because of your disgusting and blatent bias towards the above former nobody.
