Obama’s Iowa Bump

3/15/08, 7:51 pm EST

So, through some arcane process that I don’t care to understand, some of John Edwards’ Iowa delegates were up for grabs at today’s Iowa county conventions.

The result of which was that Barack Obama tacked on another 7 pledged delegates, while Hillary Clinton only nabbed one.

He nets 6 pledged delegates for the afternoon. Meaning that today alone was as big a delegate day for him as March 4 was for her.

To paraphrase Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Obama’s delegate math is the new black.

UPDATE: It looks like an even bigger day for Obama than we first thought:

From an email sent by Obama campaign manager David Plouffe: “Senator Obama netted ten delegates tonight. For comparison purposes, Senator Clinton netted nine delegates in Ohio.”

There is no way Hilliary can catch Obama in the pledge delegates or for that matter in total votes. However, she will try and find a way to steal the election; never put anything past the Clintons. I love Bill but Hilliary????

Joe c | 3/15/2008, 10:50 pm EST

When this contest began, they should have said, “May the best mathematician win!” But another way of judging these results is to admit that Obama has the stronger, smarter organization, and more individual supporters willing to put their money behind his candidacy.

Dvid | 3/15/2008, 10:59 pm EST

Yes, but all the delegates in the world will not get him out of the “Reverend Wright” mess. He may win the Democratic Nomination but he will not win the presidency now.

mark | 3/15/2008, 11:06 pm EST

Actually McCain has his own “Reverend” woes to deal with, so Obama and he are both unlikely to talk too much about their former pastors in the general election…

Bill | 3/15/2008, 11:28 pm EST

I love you too, Juice.

Deacon Blues | 3/15/2008, 11:40 pm EST

Why is that Dvid?
Reverend Wright didn’t say anything that many intelligent white people don’t also believe. The ignorance and arrogance of our current administration has only made it that much worse. Call it Karma, Murphy’s Law, The Theory of Probability, whatever, but how can we be the world’s bully and not expect it to eventually come around and bite us in the ass? It’s time America lead by example and not force. Just because a supporter of Sen. Obama has an opinion about something, doesn’t mean Sen. Obama shares that philosophy. Just as I feel that not all HRC supporters are divisive, tactless, win at any cost, greedy, ego-maniacs like she is.

Is Obama His Brother's Keeper? | 3/16/2008, 12:23 am EST

How is what Wright has said/says/will say the responsibility of Obama? I continue to be surprised by the IL-logic of the people.

yeah | 3/16/2008, 3:10 am EST

The Wright story actually weakens the GOP’s attack. I mean, Obama can’t be a Muslim radical AND a Christian extremist right? They’re only gonna be able to pick one.

All kidding aside, the Wright story will be long since forgotten by election day, same as the Hagee and Parsley endorsements will be forgotten for McCain. The greater irony is of course that both sides complain when a candidate is associated with a controversial preacher, yet this country would never elect an atheist or agnostic. The candidate has to be religious, but just the right kind of religious.

Please Use Your Brain | 3/16/2008, 4:12 am EST

Bear Stearns is being bailed out by the government. Gas prices are at $4 per gallon in California and are slated to rise in part because of continued violence in the middle east. The dollar has just reached its lowest value since it was taken off the gold standard. Banks are afraid to lend money because they don’t feel companies will pay them back, limiting the FED reserves ability to stem a depression. The average American’s savings rate of disposable income is 0% and most plan to spend their specialty tax rebates paying off previous debts. The Iraq war is sucking 3 TRILLION dollars out of our economy.

All of this is the result of republican actions and ideology yet those on this site argue about the comments of an irrelevant preacher. Please use your brain: 8 years of republican rule have near destroyed this country; it does not matter what comments someone’s pastor made.

What is important is rescuing the U.S. from a depression. For that you need to elect a democrat.

DirtyDennis | 3/16/2008, 8:56 am EST

Hear Here!!

DirtyDennis | 3/16/2008, 9:29 am EST

TD,

I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but counting delegates now is pointless. There aren’t enough delegates remaining for Obama to win so the decision is going to the convention. There, pledged delegates mean nada.

You can Snoopy Dance all you want, but you should be trying to figure out how you’re going to KEEP the delegates you have.

mali | 3/16/2008, 9:58 am EST

Obama stands behind his pastor
March 15, 2008 How does Obama consider someone a Mentor and friend for 20 years and not know their hateful racist values and character? Obama says he highly respects the opinions of Rev. Wright who Obama has said brought hope to many and gave an award to the notorious Louis Farrakhan. Nation of Islam Minister who said we are witnessing the phenomenal rise of a man of color in a country that has persecuted us! Obama hasn’t distanced himself from Farraklhan as he wants the media to believe. A number of Jewish and pro-Israel voters have concerns and raised questions about Barack Obama. In case you haven’t followed this ongoing issue, here’s a brief summary of the complaints:Obama has called for engaging Iran. Daniel Ayalon, Israel’s former ambassador to the United States, told the New York Sun he is concerned Obama would want to negotiate with a “Hitler-like” regime. Some of Obama’s policy advisors of various stripes, such as Samantha Power, Robert Malley, and Zbigniew Brzezinski, have come under attack for their views on Israel. World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder fears, it’s only a matter of time before the president becomes anti-Israel Howard Friedman, the president of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, said the leading presidential candidate are all interested in continuing close ties with Israel. Obama in traditional muslim garb brought these questions back to the fore Obama is a closet Muslim. Obama hasn’t distanced himself from Farraklhan as he wants the media to believe, Obamas and his church said Farrakhan “epitomized greatness. For Americans, Farrakhan epitomizes racism, particularly in the form of anti-Semitism. Over the years, he has compiled an awesome record of offensive statements, even denigrating the Holocaust by falsely attributing it to Jewish cooperation with Hitler “They helped him get the Third Reich on the road.” His history is a rancid stew of lies. Any praise of Farrakhan heightens the prestige of the leader of the Nation of Islam. His anti-Semitism and particularly his false insistence that Jews have played an inordinate role in victimizing African Americans. Farrakhan’s dream has vilified whites and singled out Jews to blame for crimes large and small. He talks of Jewish conspiracies to set a media line for the whole nation. He has reviled Jews in a manner that brings Hitler to mind. And yet Obama and Rev Wright heaped praise on Farrakhan. He applauds his “depth of analysis when it comes to the racial ills of this nation.” He praised “his integrity and honesty.” He called him “an unforgettable force, a catalyst for change and a religious leader who is sincere about his faith and his purpose.” These words of the black man who touts change and claims to be a uniter of all people?

DO NOT VOTE FOR OBAMANATION!
AMERICANS VOTERS MUST REALLY GIVE SERIOUS SECOND THOUGHT TO AN OBAMA PRESIDENCY! WE KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT HIM AND SHOULD NOT RISK THE SECURITY OF OUR COUNTRY! Especially… in time of WAR! I’m frankly concerned about his corrupt backers, friends and Islamic connections coming out of the wood work! Which the media has extremely failed voters. I’m very concerned that as President he would have the countries security information to go against Americans, Especially when we just learned he is dishonest lying about meeting with Canada, telling voters one thing them another… REALLY THINK ABOUT IT! Who else has he met with? Whose side is he really on? HIS CONNECTIONS TO ISLAM CONCERNS US A GREAT DEAL, I AM VERY CONCERN WITH AN EX-MUSLIM WITH A RACIST WIFE WHO ISNT PROUD OF AMERICA AS A PRESIDENT.
THINK!

Jed Clampett | 3/16/2008, 10:27 am EST

Rev Wright spoke the truth without mincing words and jumping around the issue trying to spare the oppressors feelings. American’s hate to be told the truth of their actions, they prefer the fantasy that they are the holiest on earth.
Why isn’t anyone asking Sen Clinton about her friendship and closeness to Spitzer? Is Bill a member of the emperor’s club?

Trey | 3/16/2008, 10:41 am EST

just a couple of things to say here. the first thing is I am a white man that grew up in the rural south. the words that obama’s preacher spoke are nothing but the truth. does anyone think a white woman in this country has had to deal with the same class of struggles and obstacles that a black man has. you have to be kidding me. growing up in the south you realize that there are two worlds, which is what edwards spoke of. why is it that when someone in the black community calls a spade a spade is it extremist racism, but when we criticize a black man saying that the only way he could be in his situation is because he is black, because god forbid that a black man is capable of being president, is ok. if not for african americans pointing out the injustice and struggles in their society, i would probably not be able to eat lunch with my black friends today.

on a side note who are these nut jobs that think that obama is going to come in and make america a muslim nation. you guys need to go crawl back into your hole because if you open your eyes you would see that the state of the nation could not get much worse, even if he managed to be a closet muslim who invites the “terrorist” to sleep in the lincoln bedroom, but only for a large donation

Delta Wild Man | 3/16/2008, 11:14 am EST

Obama’s Iowa Bump??

What is Obama expecting??
Is it a Iowa baby Bump??
I think there’s too much junk in da bump!

Tlw-- OHIO | 3/16/2008, 12:12 pm EST

Vetting? What will be the next surprise coming out of the Obama campaign? At least we get this information now instead of 3 weeks before the general election.

Maybe Rolling Stone should have toned down some of the celestial light on Sen. Obama on their cover endorsemant!

Jed Clampett | 3/16/2008, 12:47 pm EST

leaves me to wonder what kind of surprises will be found when Sen Clinton finally decides to abide by the spirit of transparency and reveals her tax records and earmark requests. Doesn’t anyone wonder why she is stalling? Shouldn’t we know these things before the general election where it can actually destroy the candidate?

ray | 3/16/2008, 1:09 pm EST

i dont think Rev. Wright costs Obama the election. People who are going to vote for Obama know if You go to church You dont allways agree with The Preacher. i disagreed with mine about Bush and Iraq.

Jed Clampett | 3/16/2008, 6:36 pm EST

Rev Wright needs to motivate his church, his people to support the struggle of the people of TIBET as the struggle of oppressed people all over the world. Those working for pennies a day in sweatshops making $150 sneakers, those working in african mines without as much as a pension plan, those who because they happen to have been born of the wrong class or color can be simply cast aside as the waste product of our society.

STAND UP PEOPLE, NOW IS THE TIME!!!

Doughboy | 3/16/2008, 8:55 pm EST

Why does the lie that Obama is muslim keep getting replayed over and over again? Why is it still even talked about?

And why is any black man who ever runs for office always associated with Louis Farrakan? So Farrakan made some anti-semitic remarks. That’s nothing compared to what one of John McCain’s favored supporters has said. He has said Catholicism was a whorish cult, that Hurricane Katrina was god’s way of punishing New Orleans because it had scheduled a gay pride parade, and he has supported Israel because it will help bring about the apocalypse during which all Jews will either be converted to Christianity or burned alive.

Why is Louis Farakkan such a big deal again? Oh right, because Obama won’t bomb Iran if he is elected. And anyone who won’t bomb Iran must be anti-semitic in some way. Still right, mali?

trey | 3/16/2008, 9:29 pm EST

jed i agree with you. the situation in tibet right now is appalling and the way that our country is turning a blind eye to china is appaling. something needs to happen about that now

DirtyDennis | 3/17/2008, 9:07 am EST

Trey,

I wouldn’t assume nothing is happening. It may not be, given the mindset of the Bushney administration, but if something IS being done, better it be done outside the MSM. This is a time for diplomacy, not saber-rattling. We can only hope State is doing that.

You can chalk this up as a backlash to Iraq. How can we condemn China for doing what we’re doing to Iraq?

Trey | 3/17/2008, 11:55 am EST

Dennis, I hope you are right. It just seems to me that this administration is unwilling to question countries that we have economic ties with. It seems as if the all mighty dollar trumps human rights any day. I agree that what we are doing in iraq is reprehensible, but it is not the same focuses cultural genocide that is being committed in tibet…I look for these olympics this summer to be quite an interesting diplomatic show, with the potential for something happen over taiwan, I just hope that the US comes down on the side of human rights and justice, whatever side that might be

Jed Clampett | 3/17/2008, 12:45 pm EST

Why should China be rewarded for it’s repressive tactics with an event as prestigious and with positive economic repercussions as the olympic games. Have we forgotten what they did to their own people in TIANENMEN SQUARE just a few decades ago? Did those men that were in power then give up their control or merely change the illusion they portrayed.

NOTHING SHORT OF A COMPLETE BOYCOTT OF THE OLYMPICS WILL MAKE CHINA LOOSEN IT’S ENSLAVING GRIP ON THE POPULACE.

If we can get the starving peasants in other provinces to start demonstrating peacefuly, you will see the true opressive, vile nature of our ‘economic partners’.

Delta Mild Stan | 3/17/2008, 12:59 pm EST

Do you really think an Olympics boycott is going to make China reconsider its status as a repressive authoritarian police state? Hell no. We should start by revoking their free-trade status. Too bad the fact that they own so much of our national debt makes any repercussions fatal to our economy.

Jed Clampett | 3/17/2008, 1:52 pm EST

it was inteded that way. it’s harder to divest yourself of salve labor when you are so dependant on it.

did anyone catch the John Adams miniseries on HBO last night? you should have, perhaps you’d understand what our founders fought for and the people of tibet are struggling for. I’m sure there’ll be reruns, check your listings.

DirtyDennis | 3/17/2008, 3:47 pm EST

We could ‘nationalize’ all of China’s holdings. With out Demo Prez and Demo Congress, we could just say that was that ‘other’ U.S., not ‘us.’

Hell is okay now!!??!!

Jed Clampett | 3/17/2008, 4:08 pm EST

you are starting to sound like a communist wanting to “nationalize” everything. Remember what happened to Castro when he decided to nationalize the oil industry in his country? His people are still struggling under the weight of American embargoes and repression because of those decisions. It really pis$ed the greedy establishment off.

Anatomy of a riot: People fed up with their situation stage a peaceful protest to bring attention to their plight to the world media. The government in question responds with repressive and agressive tactics, sending the riled up sensitivities of the crowd over the edge. With the protesters now in a frenzy, the government can justify extreme aggression and force and keep it’s semblance of trying to maintain the publics safety while dealing with a rogue, extremist, violent element of the society.
It happenend in my country, it happens here, remember how police attacked the protesters at a G8 summit some years ago? Or how they reacted to mexicans americans making their views known on immigration issues in LA? allow it to happen there without any mention and it will be much more acceptable to deploy the tactic here when we need it. Remember when african americans were protesting, demanding the civil rights that suppossedly had been given to them so long ago but never really materialized? They were adamantly oppossed to any violent acts or acts of more than civil dissobedience in the spirit of the credo of ghandi. The police in the southern states attacked them mercilessly, even using dogs, then blamed the riots on the protestors. You ain’t seen nothing yet, those guys who are here to serve and protect their own interests are all military trained and will follow any oppressive order, without thinking twice about whether it is lawful or not. They know they will be protected in the end and will be able to get away with murder as they normally do.

jeffery mcnary | 3/17/2008, 5:23 pm EST

DirtyDennis | 3/17/2008, 6:04 pm EST

Jeff,

Nothing is off-topic. That’s like the Cider House Rules. It only applies to ‘undersireables.’

‘Off Color’ is a whole other matter.

Doughboy | 3/17/2008, 7:27 pm EST

Dirty Dennis,

Sure Obama needs to be battle tested but that doesn’t mean Hillary or McCain don’t either. The media basically rushes to give McCain a free pass. The problem is, unlike bringing up Obama or Hillary’s ties to shady real estate developers or McCain’s shady ties to lobbyists, the muslim lie about Obama is completely out of bounds.

Besides being xenophobic, vaguely racist and destructive to national discourse, allegations that Obama is muslim have been completely disproved, yet major media outlets still talk about them.

When the NYTimes attacked McCain for supposed infidelity and lobbyist ties the ENTIRE MEDIA attacked the NYTimes. That story is not talked about even in light of facts which suggest it might be true.

Not so with the “Obama is a muslim” lie. Were the media to treat Obama with the same reverence they do McCain, the mere suggestion that Obama is a muslim would invite personal attacks on whoever suggested it and a blacklisting from public comment.

The only conclusion one can come to is that certain members of the media like the notion of fear mongering about Obama’s religion. My guess is they’re the same people who bring up Louis Farakkan any time a black man speaks in public and the same people who dream of taking us to war in Iran.

DirtyDennis | 3/17/2008, 7:40 pm EST

Dboy,

I don’t much pay attention to idiotic stories like this, but my sense is the Right has been holding back. I don’t think they want to milk this issue. They’re waiting until General time. I’d rather exhaust it now and put it behind us, if that’s possible.

I don’t believe the MSM is either organized or biased, beyond longing for “Sex, Lies and Videotapes.” Each ‘outlet’ wants to curry advertising via numbers or awards and each correspondent wants his/her name in lights. Any avenue available to those ends is acceptable.

There are notable exceptions, of course, but they can be counted as the exception that proves the rule.

I don’t go looking, but my sense is the only time Farrakhan’s name is mentioned is in a negative connection in an election. Beyond that, the man appears to be a non-entity, at least on the national news scale. It IS remarkable, as you point out, that McClain could come away clean from the revelation of his cozying with lobbyists, both in the past AND in running his campaign. Especially given that he’s been such a ‘champion’ of ethics.

But I would steal a page from the Right on that matter and let sleeping dogs lie. The whole matter can be readdressed next Summer. Right now he’s out of range. Wait until we can see the white of his eyes.

DirtyDennis | 3/17/2008, 7:46 pm EST

Oops, I guess I shouldn’t have made that off-topic comment. Twice now I’ve posted, seen them ‘aired,’ gone away, returns and ‘Poof,’ disappeared into the ether. Sometimes they magically reappear. I guess TD or some RS minion plucks them off, ‘reviews’ them for ‘content’ and passes judgement upon their ‘postability.’ That’s cool. It’s their site.

Doughboy | 3/17/2008, 8:21 pm EST

Why is what I wrote not showing up?

DirtyDennis | 3/17/2008, 8:46 pm EST

It would appear that reports of this blog’s survival are premature. At least we’re not getting proxy errors. We’re just not getting anything.

Douoghby | 3/17/2008, 9:05 pm EST

Dirty Dennis,

If there is anything true about xenophobic, negative attacks it is that the less they are heard the better for those being attacked. Because of that no one should “exhause them now” on Obama. I would bet the cable media outlets at least refer to the lie that “obama is a muslim” without refuting it at least once every single day. If they did the same about McCain possibly sleeping with a lobbyist I GUARANTEE McCain’s approval rating would drop.

That speaks to your next point as well: if the media was really ONLY concerned about advertising, and that sex, lies and videotape are the surest way to get greater advertising revenue, then the media would as a whole be talking about McCain sleeping with a lobbyist EVERY DAY regardless of whether it was true or not since that scandal is ALL ABOUT sex, lies and videotape.

doughboy | 3/17/2008, 9:18 pm EST

why has this site removed half of what I wrote?

doughboy | 3/17/2008, 9:20 pm EST

bringing up Farakhan and the lie that obama is muslim is done primarily to scare jewish democrats from supporting obama. And those charges are brought up over and over again after being refuted.

doughboy | 3/17/2008, 9:22 pm EST

why was that part removed?

Trey | 3/17/2008, 10:30 pm EST

def a ghost on the page… or more like a black hole, similar to the one that bush’s brains, good ideas, and 1970’s went to

Jed Clampett | 3/17/2008, 11:59 pm EST

so, are you starting to understand what a propaganda machine does?
Remember Howard Dean and his unfortunate voice dilema? Do you really think it was enough of a news item to be repeated over and over and over again till it disqualified him from the presidency, yet allowed a liar and thief to gain the seat of power?
Who has been the beneficiaries of that support of the guy you could have a beer with, but you better be wearing a mail undershirt to protect against the knife wounds?
Seems like the oil industry has been doing great. The pharmaceuticals and healthcare industry are doing great while the systems they are entrusted with are a shambles, I’d say the military industrial comples is booming. Fema has been hurt, the national institutes of science seems to have lost credibility. It’s like the guys who keep teling us government is bad keep trying to destroy it, yet they keep getting reelected. I think that was Eisntein’s definition of insanity.
Now we have a ‘financial’ crisis on our hands of catastrophic proportions and the liar in chief repeats his BS… the economy is doing great, we are winning in iraq, our ex enemies are our allies(as long as we’re paying them off), etc etc.

Bears Stearns made lots of bad investments in bad loans, the lenders made loans to needy people with usury intrest rates which they knew would be defaulted on, these investors speculated on that they would get lots of properties for cheap once they defaulted. So Bear’s gamble on a criminal investement vehicle made them crash… Did the Gov give them a subprime rate of 13%+ like they would have done the PEOPLE or help out their buddies with interest free loans?
Are you guys understanding why they hate Sen Obama so much and love their Hillarys and McCains and Frists and o’neals? They assist those that are robbing us blind keep doing it, and support the illusion of resolving problems while thinking of how to make themselves and their friends lots of money. Guess what, the chikens are coming home to roost, make the wrong presidential choice and we’ll get crapped on so bad race or religion will be the least of our worries.

Hey capitalists, why wasn’t Bear allowed to die the death of a bad capitalist instead of bailing out a bunch of thieves? Could it be that businesses matter more than THE PEOPLE to the ‘patriots’ that we’ve entrusted with our wellbeing?

DirtyDennis | 3/18/2008, 7:58 am EST

Dboy,

Oops, left out politics. It trumps, “Sex, Lies & Videotapes.” However, it IS of note that NYT ‘lead’ the story by innuendo of sex. And that’s what all the other MSM jumped on. They were, in fact, focusing on sex and NOT the story. I think I’ll stand by my premise until a better example against is forthcoming, not that I think I’m particularly safe here.

I find it interesting, and telling, that TD’s lead statement on this thread is that he doesn’t, “care to understand,” the primary process. He’s all about the votes, as if it matters. And therein lies the problem.
