Debate Stakes

2/21/08, 5:52 pm EST

Tonight’s CNN debate offers Hillary Clinton what may be a final chance to alter the dynamics of the race on a stage big enough to matter.

Strategically, she’s reached a point where she’s got to do something to tear Obama down. It’s likely to get ugly tonight. If the Clinton oppo team has an arrow left in their quiver — something more eye catching than borrowing a friend’s applause line in a speech — I expect we’re going to see it.

Predictions?

No doubt that Hillary’s back is up against the wall, and that makes her dangerous. I’m thinking we are going to see her in full-out attack mode. Why not? She’s already squandered her lead and nearly every penny in her war chest, and God knows the Clintons aren’t exactly gracious on their way out the door. But more importantly, Obama’s biggest weakness during this campaign has been his inability to campaign like a front-runner, and if New Hampshire and Nevada were any indication, Hillary will have no problem attacking this from any angle she can. Obama has to go into tonight playing to win instead of playing not to lose. Let’s not forget that, all momentum aside, he still has an uphill climb ahead if he is going to win in Texas or Ohio, and simply weathering the inevitable onslaught isn’t going to cut it.

Prediction: The audience will react to any attack by Hillary with boos and groans, like at previous debates (when she was the “front-runner”).

Negativity tonight will only make her campaign look desperate, as it no doubt is.

I say this as somebody who was leaning toward her, mostly for feminist reasons (the sexism has been unbearable). But in recent weeks, it’s been obvious just how craven her so-called strategists are — and I don’t want that spin and cynicism back in the White House. So go, brotha!
