Clinton Camp Touts Fundraising, Cries Poverty

2/10/08, 1:05 am EST

The Clinton website right now is touting the $10 million it has raised since Super Tuesday.

And yet, in spinning Obama’s blowouts in Louisiana, Washington, and Nebraska, the campaign implied that it was all about the lack of Benjamins:

The Obama campaign has dramatically outspent our campaign in these three states, saturating the airwaves with 30 and 60 second ads. The Obama campaign has spent $300,000 more in Louisiana on television ads, $190,000 more in Nebraska and $175,000 more in Washington.

Seriously? That’s $665,000. A pittance to go after 161 delegates (including the Virgin Islands). That’s more than Ohio’s got. More than Pennsylvania.

How costly was the decision not to more seriously contest these states?

According to a memo put out by Obama’s folks, the price was dear, indeed:

[Obama's] net gain of 45 delegates represent more than the 42 delegate net gain Senator Clinton earned in the states of Massachusetts, New Jersey, Tennessee and Arizona – combined.

It’s like this. For Team Clinton politics is similar to a shell game, because the American masses, well, they’re just a bunch of knuckleheads. The logic: you can fool most of the people most of the time.

As it turns out, Team Clinton has been particularly great at fooling the 60s generation – the folks who prided themselves on seeing through “the man” at one point. Now “the man” is Mrs. Clinton and they can’t smell the snake oil for the life of them.

“35 years of experience” – they bought it. But then, in polls, the public expressed a desire for change. So Mrs. Clinton comes up with: “35 years of experience in change” – they bought it. “Ready on Day 1″ – an entirely meaningless phrase since ready doesn’t mean wise – they bought it. “Obama likes Reagan’s ideas” after Obama merely pointed to the magnetism but not the brilliance of the Reagan revolution – they bought it.

“It’s a fairy tale” Bill said describing Obama’s anti-war record – they bought it. “I’m the only one who can beat the Republicans” – they bought it. “Hillary’s completely vetted” – they bought it. And on and on.

Fortunately, today’s youth, which has been much maligned in the media and by politicians, isn’t fooled as easily. They smell the snake oil. They know, there is no pea under the shell.

Their views are plastered all over the internet, replete with elaborate subatantiation for why Obama should be elected. Meanwhile, Clinton defenders are moaning that the “old boys network” is “piling on” and won’t allow Mrs. Clinton to shed a tear whenever she’s touched in public. And now Team Clinton is moaning about money after having wasted a fortune broadcasting a banal infomercial on the Hallmark channel.

Ready on Day 1. Broke on Day 2.

It’s a joke. And more and more people are beginning to see it for what it is. Not long ago, for instance, when asked during the debate, name a weakness, Obama said his desk is messy. Mrs. Clinton jumped all over that, indicating that anyone with a messy desk couldn’t run the country.

Now the foot’s on the other shoe. She may, yes indeed, have a neat desk with all the paperclips in the dispenser, but she piddled away millions on useless marketing materials, many of them misleading mailers.

Would you rather have a President with a neat desk and a bankrupt treasury or a President with a messy desk who knows how to get things done?

Team Clinton is soon about to return to oblivion, where they belong. In the meantime, they severely disrupted the race, overshadowing Kucinich, Biden, Richardson, Dodd and Gravel who all had far more important things to talk about than did Mrs. Clinton.

That’s unfortunate. Because the war goes on. But since African Americans, young voters, and tens of thousands of others realize that the promise of Obama’s candidacy is real, hope is being kept alive. Thank God we’re free at last of Team Clinton.

I hope Clinton’s “those states don’t matter” strategy works as well as it did for Rudy.

Kudos Arty!

I’ve been saying all along, “give Hillary enough time and she’ll hang herself.” And I don’t think it’s just the young who can see through her like glass. Intelligent folks everywhere, and of all ages, are beginning to see her wolf tail poking out of her sheep costume. })

Go Obama, we believe in you!

Don’t worry Hill, I’m keepin’ your seat warm for you here at the bar.
