The Electability Argument

2/4/08, 1:52 pm EST

If McCain can put a state like California in play, Democrats should be very distressed. This is a cycle that the party should be seeking to push purple states blue, not waste millions defending core Electoral College delegates.
Yet the latest Field Poll suggests that McCain can go toe-to-toe in California… against Hillary Clinton.

The same poll gives Obama a (still-to-tight but at least) comfortable 7 point margin in the Golden State.

WSJ.com:

Significantly, the poll has Sen. McCain statistically tied with Sen. Clinton in a hypothetical matchup, suggesting Democrats’ lock on the state and its 55 electoral votes — critical to their hopes for the White House — could be picked. Sen. Obama bests Sen. McCain in a hypothetical face-off by seven percentage points.

still too tight?

It is too early to be paying attention to face to face polls. The canidates aren’t competing accross party lines yet.

However, the advantage that Hillary has is women. Women are not a minority of voters. I think that some (not all, but enough) republican women will vote for her. My mom said that she will–and she has voted republican for the last dozen elections.

Another advantage is Florida and Michigan. The democratic committee has kind of snubbed their noses at Florida by saying that their votes don’t count. However, Hillary has gone against that trend. We know how close Florida was last time. Hillary can turn that red state blue.
