L.A. Times Endorses Obama

2/1/08, 9:35 pm EST

It’s a judgment thing. And also this:

Clinton is an essay, solid and reasoned; Obama is a poem, lyric and filled with possibility. Clinton would be a valuable and competent executive, but Obama matches her in substance and adds something that the nation has been missing far too long — a sense of aspiration.

To the Candidates:

Campaign promises won’t cut it!

Will you NOW, as a citizen, as a Senator whose oath of office requires that you “protect and defend” the Constitution – clearly and consistently call for immediate hearings and investigations into the many credible allegations of impeachable offences leveled against both Bush and Cheney.

Your continued silence on this matter makes you complicit in their abuse of power and suggests that you may hope to profit by it should you be elected to the Presidency.

To the media and the press:

Your silence, your refusal to confront the candidates on the crucial issue of the separation of powers and the rule of law and their failure to speak out and take principled action to press Speaker Pelosi and the House Judiciary Committee to immediately launch hearings and investigations leading to the possible impeachment of Bush and Cheney – is a betrayal of your responsibility to the citizens of the United States.

Right. Never gonna happen.

The Times worded their endorsement fantastically. I just hope it does some good.

DirtyDennis | 2/2/2008, 7:55 am EST

Matt,

I second both your comments, although I didn’t read ALL the endorsement. I especially second your comments to WH. But I believe that civil law can also be used against Bushney. It just remains to see if someone steps forward.

As to the Times endorsement, I couldn’t agree with their sentiment more. Their points are valid. But they overlook one ‘value’ I’ve been harping on and no one on the Left seems to care about.

Wouldn’t Obama be even MORE an asset with a little more seasoning. And after eight years, who’s left? I’ve made it more than clear I’ll take anyone on the Left, but I don’t want to end there. I want dominance for the next fifty years, not that I would be around to witness it. HRC as Prez and Obama as VP would lock up the White House for 16 years. And if we can repeal the 22nd, even longer.

And if HRC DID get elected Prez, I’d make Bill ambassador to Iceland.

PS

Besides, the ‘window’ for impeachment is shrinking fast and with the ‘interest’ in the election, a difficult ’s-e-l-l.’

However, impeachment of Supreme Court Judges is something constantly ‘available.’

The TIMES has written a thoughtful article.

Their choice of Obama and McCain as the candidates we will be voting for will probably be correct.

There is a real choice here: Another old line backward thinking war monger vs. progressive people oriented forward thinking new blood.

Obama is right. Time for a change.

Impeachment won’t happen because the democrats don’t have enough numbers in congress and they are sure, from previous experience, that the republicant’s will put up a united front that they won’t be able to muster 60+ votes against.
Watching Sen. Waxman on Bill Moyers presents and NOW (PBS, the shows can be watched online) I realize that the investigations are going forward, people, including the sec state have been brought before comittes and refused to answer or outright lied or their favorite defense… ‘I did nothing wrong’ which is rather clever since most laws say the person has to have awareness of wrongdoing while committing a crime to be punishable(willful intent). My impression from Waxman’s and other’s comments is that the preparations are for a trip to the hague for the administration and some of it’s major players. While I would hate for that tarnishment to our image, it would probably be the only thing that repairs our standing in the world, it would say that in america there are some still beholden to justice instead of the unnaccountability the world has wittnessed of late.
The team of osaMABUSh has sent the world into a chaos that perhaps cannot be reversed. The destruction of the space shuttle columbia over dallas was the comet that marks the beginning spoken of in ancient times.
The only way to prevent major escalation with other nations is to show we are not averse to holding our own leaders accontable when they go on a power mad rampage of political and economic dimensions.

Tnx Jed,

I’m always amazed at those ‘why isn’t the democratic congress DOING anything’ comments. As if. Inquiring is ALL they can do and they’re amassing a body of evidence for ’something.’ If nothing else, the record books and ‘legacy.’

I think we have to clean up our own mess and not count on others. I don’t think the American public would stand for ‘foreigners’ ‘judging’ our Prez, et al. Besides, it would send a good ‘message’ if we policed up our own sheet.

I agree wholeheartedly with WHBass about Pelosi. Taking impeachment off the table is a dereliction of duty. It, in and of itself, is an impeachable offense.

But, Tim, can we actually get a thread going about some actual news? Here’s one to start with: The FISA debate. Bush is going to veto the bill without immunity even though we’re in ‘grave danger’. I’d like to hear some of his jock straps (supporters) defend this one……..

Shule | 2/2/2008, 6:14 pm EST

Just heard proto-slimeball Dick Morris (on some rightwing gasbag’s radio talkshow) say if Hillary lost the nomination, she’d waste no time in setting her sights on becoming Majority Leader. Let’s play What if? Would she? Could she?

Delta Wild Man | 2/3/2008, 1:25 am EST

Now I wonder why this does not surprise me??

ray | 2/3/2008, 3:20 pm EST

My local paper endorsed Obama, i was proud of them. They endorsed Mc Cain for the other party. The editor was critical of Bill and what He called the Clintons baggage.
