Mr. Dickinson– I liked your recent RS article. Where else do you publish? I vote Dem Tues in Cal. HC is an “educated” but old school insider; BO has charisma but a shady patron in is closet. Both would set precedences. If I vote for O, it may be an act in futility, like Nadar in 2000. Despite the unctuous choices, shouldn’t I be practical for the fight against the facist Rep.s?

shauna rae — Two years ago I read Hillary would be the next “heart” vote — as a nostalgia vote for the glory days of Bill; the “Head” vote would be whatever Dem contender came without her baggage. How a cadidate is “seen” often depends on who believes in them, and why. I mean, perhaps seeing HRC as a more realistic candidate is playing into the hands of the reactionary opposition, who would much rather re-fight the “them vs. us” battles that shoved Bill C toward the right, killed progressive hopes with the slow death of a “thousand cuts” (workfare, NAFTA, the anti-terror death penalty bill, etc) during 1992-2000, and ultimately encouraged the gesture of the Nader candidacy. So my answer to you would be: You can make a vote for Obama as realistic as you choose, but not if you vote for HRC becasue you think she’s more a realistic choice. Then you’re not voting; you’re betting. And gamblers are always playing against the house.
