McCain & Clinton: Thanks Thompson, Richardson

1/20/08, 3:42 pm EST

This is a simple observation. But McCain and Hillary owe a debt of gratitude today to Fred Thompson and Bill Richardson.

Thompson, a McCain ally in his Senate tenure, attacked Huckabee in the SC debate, and managed to split the evangelical vote with Hucky… leaving McCain in the victory circle.

The absence of Bill Richardson was arguably the difference maker in Nevada on Saturday. Richardson, who at times in the past months seemed to be running a race for Hillary’s VP, mysteriously cleared out of the presidential race right before Nevada caucuses, where his advantages of geography and ethnicity stood to propel him to his best showing of the early races.

Had he remained in the race, the Hispanic vote would have been more hotly contested, and Obama likely would have emerged the popular vote, as well as the delegate-count, winner in the Silver State.

UPDATE: Huckabee’s camp agrees with me on the Fred Thompson score. From MSNBC:

Former SC Gov. David Beasley, a Huckabee surrogate, railed against Thompson.

“Fred hurt us in South Carolina,” Beasley began. “He had one goal and one goal only — to distort Mike Huckabee’s record so John McCain could pull it out. No ifs, ands or buts about it….

“Thompson came here and just went to the areas where he could gut Huckabee. I have no doubt in my mind, it was Washington politics at its worst.

“One thing about Fred; I love Fred, but Fred’s not stupid….I don’t think he had any intention in South Carolina but to hurt Mike Huckabee…. Had Fred Thompson not been in the race, this would have been an overwhelming, dynamic victory for Mike Huckabee.”

Tell Huckabee to stop blaming Fred for His loss. Huckabee lost because people are starting to look at his lies and his real records of raising tax’s 47% and he is pro amnesty! Just as McCain and Giuliani are all pro amnesty too. Know your candidates people and Fred is the ONLY true conservative in the running. I am so Glad Fred is staying in and eventually all the liberal lying candidates such as Huckabee, McCain and Rudy will be forced to drop out. Stop your whining Huckabee it only shows what a crybaby you really are and How Fred is the only Adult in this race.

Regardless of who is still in this thing, I think we can at least say farewell to the fukking paul-patrol. Their starry-eyed fanaticism was a little too Nuremberg-1938 for me to take seriously. (BTW I am not really comparing Ron Paul to Hitler, just in case some of you aren’t capable of taking a joke – particularly Eastwood). Anyway, good riddance to the paul patrol and the beedy-eyed demagogue himself. If it’s any consolation to them, they can tell us ‘I told you so’ – as they count their gold ingots – when the economy slides into depression in time for the innauguration.

I wouldnt count Ron Paul out so fast…there’s still a chance he could break away into a third party

he wont get elected, but he can have a serious effect on the outcome of the election, ala Ross Perot or Ralph Nader…a lot of people (including myself) like his positions, and he’s the closest thing to a libertarian in the race…but if he sticks it out, Ron Paul may end up influencing the way things go, in more ways than one…also, if thompson drops out soon, and huckabee is finished, Paul still has some room to be a thorn in someone’s side

and by the way, we happen to like our gold ignots, thank you very much

If Dr. Demento wants to keep himself in the good graces of the GOP (and thereby remain in office) he will do no such thing. As far as being a thorn in anyone’s side, I think that gives entirely too much credit to him and his platform. Paul’s nineteenth century mindset has absolutely no relevance in the twenty-first century. Besides, can you really see a bunch of gun-loving good-ol’-boys voting for Ron Paul with Hillary’s bulging eyes staring at them from TV land? Remember those “don’t blame me, I voted for Bush” bumper stickers?

Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are the only honest men in this race. What disgraceful joke the media is telling us with this “coverage” of the election. It’s a sad sad day when Chuck Norris gets more air time than a man who actually had the brains and compassion to vote against the war and also the balls to draft legislation to impeach DICK Cheney for war crimes.

MLK is none to proud of you and your boys today. Turn off your TV and read a book.

Chuck Norris fought for this country, damn it!

Ole,

I don’t think kick boxing counts. Or were you talking about in the movies?

Merkwurdigliebe | 1/21/2008, 8:58 pm EST

he may be referring to Chuck’s service in the Air Force, and he was in around the time of the Vietnam war if memory serves

DirtyDennis | 1/22/2008, 7:56 am EST

Merk,

I was just teasing. Piqued, I looked him up. USAF MP from ‘58 to ‘62, prepping for a career in law enforcement.

Interestingly, his brother died in Nam.

But to pick nits, he ’served’ his country, he didn’t fight for it. We should keep that distinction clear to honor those who took incoming.

I was referring to the Delta Force films. He kicked ass in those!
