Tim,

McCain gets three (3) percent more than Huckabee and you say, “Bye Bye?” The GOP is in disarray. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this go to the convention.

Arnie could be pivotal although I doubt the Cons Of CA would be moved by his call.

blood for oil of olay | 1/20/2008, 1:05 pm EST

GOP in disarray? I suppose if the same candidate won each primary round, you would say it was some corporate conspiracy.

I think the GOP side of the campaign so far has been about trying to figure out which candidate is capable of representing the entire spectrum of issues that are important to Republican voters. Meanwhile, Democrats have reduced the matter to gender and race and the voters they represent are lapping it up.

ray | 1/20/2008, 1:10 pm EST

“Bye Bye Hucky” is a little premature, Conservatives and others who want to beat McCain and Romney will still vote for Huck. im progressive and i think Hucks the right choice, Obamas a good choice too. Dont count either one out yet.

Merkwürdigliebe | 1/20/2008, 1:27 pm EST

no, huckabee is done, he’s not going anywhere yet, but slowly but surely you’re about to see voters syphoned off from his campaign…Guiliani is now going to be really entering the race, and Mitt and McCain have the momentum…Mitt is the corporate candidate who just looks presidential, and McCain has the foreign policy “experience”…Huckabee just cant count on evangelicals in every state to carry him, hence the result in S. Carolina

plus, everytime he opens his mouth, he sounds either like a televangelist or a nutjob, like his weirdo comment on marriage

Good point Olay…if anything, both sides are in disarray, but i hope Obama gets the nom, simply because he isnt a chairman mao in high heels like hillary, or a slimey good ol boy millionaire “of the people” lawyer…or batsh*t insane like Kucinich

Blood for Oil:

In a way, your right, see the republicans don’t want the white house, nor do they want congress, not over the next 4 years, not by a long shot.
America has got a hard lesson to learn, and the republicans want to be able to blame it on the democrats, thus, they have no intentions of winning the white house..

The Preverbal $hit is about to Hit The Fan, and they want none of it on their faces..
Notice what’s happened to the Auto Manufacturers with health care and retirement costs??
Same thing is about to happen on a national level with America.

blood for oil of olay | 1/20/2008, 4:42 pm EST

DWM -

Good point, the $hit is about to hit the fan and the folks in Washington are going to have a lot to answer for soon. America/World has a lot of things to sort out in the next decade or so. Still, I can’t think of any point in history in the last 100 years when the same prognositications might not have been made with equal certainty. If I were a political party facing election in November, I would not want to be accountable for the crap I would stand to inherit, if I lacked a solid plan to start making things better. On the other hand, I might have a clear idea of what to do and how to get it done. Granted, political parties are a helluva lot more complicated than my little reduction; they represent a disparate collection of motivations and aspirations. This brings me to my point…I doubt individuals in either party are making decisions about how to proceed vis a vis this election based on some collective strategy such as the one you describe. For starters, these people are way too egotistical to go about things this way. They have their own individual aspirations, agendas, axes-to-grind. They are not going to be deterred from pursuing office based on something as abstract as a Republican or Democrat strategy. In short, politicians and political parties have to look at every moment as an opportunity to seize control and hold it. Perhaps it is a good thing that individual wills are so important to the process, it keeps things from degenerating totally to the realpolitik that you describe. Unfortunately, when the $hit really does hit the fan, I wouldn’t want to be the one who is held accountable, particularly when it the $hit is more than likely the collective dumpings of my predecessors and contemporaries.

Ole,

Everything is relative. The GOP is in more disarray today than since Nixon. Since Reagan they have have spoke with one voice. Not any more.

Since this thread is about the GOP, I kept my comments on point. The Left is ALWAYS in disarray. What’s new?

DirtyDennis | 1/20/2008, 7:31 pm EST

Ole,

…or should I say, “Everything Is Illuminated?” Seen that one? Excellent.

blood for oil of olay | 1/20/2008, 8:20 pm EST

Nyet on “Everything Is Illuminated”, but will check it out. I still don’t think the GOP is in disarray. I think the GOP definitely has its own incompatabilities, but when it still is able to speak with one voice when it needs to. Bush was a great compromise towards this end – a neocon whose personal life was transformed by Billy Graham. At this point in the election it looks like the party is being pulled in a lot of directions, but I think that this is because we are at a unique point in history and looking for the next leader in the party to emerge, but that doesn’t necessarily mean disarray. As DWM astutely points out, it might not be a good thing for Republicans to wind up in office this time around. When the time is right, though, rest assured, the GOP will coalesce around some new vision and Republican voters will adopt it (with a little help from talk radio) lock, stock and barrel. Meanwhile, the Dems. will be fighting over entitlements and who is really black.

DirtyDennis | 1/21/2008, 7:14 am EST

Semantics. We seem to be one on the thought that this is NOT the GOP of yesterday. We will observe with interest the unfoldings. I lack your confidence. The rabid bigotry exhibited by Limbaugh, et al, knows no limit. I foresee them turning on themselves.

With a nod to the voice of children and idiots, I’m not sure Wild Thing rates as an oracle. Realistically, he has a 50/50 chance of being right. As do I in disagreement. Like you, I’ve seen predictions of glood and doom come and go. I’ll grant you, however, that I’m not brimming with confidence over the coming days and would not wish the responsibility of righting the ship of state upon anyone.

If you’ll pardon a measure of partisinship, we’ve certainly seen the Right make a mess of it.

DD-
The problems that the next president will inherit are HUGE, but they were not caused by ‘the right’. All who have held power during and post WWII share the responsibility in my opinion.

DirtyDennis | 1/21/2008, 10:30 am EST

Ole,

Including thee and me. But who amongst us has had the greatest opportunity and squandered it? Bushney. Almost eight years of a Right dominated government, and what?

All are accountable, but some errors are more egregious (no spellcheck).

DirtyDennis | 1/22/2008, 7:58 am EST

Play nice Jed.

Jed –
You are more than welcome to contact me via the above, if you need a direction to channel all of that angst. I am here for you, man!

No thanks, I prefer intelligent discourse. I will be sure to post your address to a few botnet operators to give you something to read though.
Who knows, you might be able to put some of those adds to use. LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR KEYBOARD TODAY!!!

blood for oil of olay | 1/22/2008, 11:48 am EST

Oh come on, Jed! Get a sense of humor. I thought maybe you might want to keep that email and use it for more “intelligent discourse” just in case the back-and-forth degenerates into something a little less than civilized.

Jed Clampett | 1/22/2008, 1:17 pm EST

what, you don’t think it’s hillarious that the internet will be delivering a steady stream of junk mail to your inbox and overflow it continously until you decide to terminate that particular account? I find it even more telling that you would expose yourself that way to the public, but it’s all part of the process…

blood for oil of olay | 1/22/2008, 1:33 pm EST

Jed-
I appreciate your concern. All of my account info is fake and I am well-protected from Trojan Horses and suck like. Is this not enough?

DirtyDennis | 1/22/2008, 6:51 pm EST

Ole,

A modern day John Wayne. Except ol John never served. Too bad. War might have ended sooner.

Never much cared for Chuck’s Delta flicks. That one where he single-handedly wipes out the invading Commies from Cuba was a keeper, however.

blood for oil of olay | 1/22/2008, 8:20 pm EST

Yeah, Delta Force wasn’t that great, come to think of it. But, that Cuban one sticks in my memory too. I also used to get a kick out of The Octagon. Don’t remember him having such a winning set of chompers back then. Those have to be the very latest in space age technology – maybe post Columbia heat-ablative tiles.

blood for oil of olay | 1/22/2008, 8:21 pm EST

Oh Yeah! I forgot about that flick where Norris takes on some Jonestown like martial arts cult. That one is right up there with any of the Bruce Lee flicks.

DirtyDennis | 1/23/2008, 9:09 am EST

What about the one with the psycho-killer living in the theater? Not as much kickin’ stuff (good) but a decent suspense flick.

Still, no one approachs Jackie for all around charm and imaginative stunts. I especially like the outtakes at the end. Poor guy, he takes a beating.
