The Crying Game

1/9/08, 1:57 pm EST

Did Hillary’s tears move millions?

Apparently, they didn’t even move the woman who made her cry. The 62 year old photographer whose question got Clinton all watery voted for… Obama.

As she told ABC:

I went to see Hillary. I was undecided and I was moved by her response to me. We saw 10 seconds of Hillary, the caring woman. But then when she turned away from me, I noticed that she stiffened up and took on that political posture again. And the woman that I noticed for 10 seconds was gone.

Although I saw nothing in the clip to convince me that HRC was ‘crying,’ the point should be, WHO CARES? I’ve been around long enough to know that EVERYONE cries at some time or another. We each just have different buttons that need to be pushed.

Humans store up a lot of emotion, some more than others. I would have to expect that given what HRC has confronted over the past twenty years, she has a pretty good reservoir built up. Wiffle-headed Bush, on the other hand, is an emotional wasteland. I can offer some suggestions as to why that might be, but I don’t think it’s necessary. We all have a pretty good inkling of what a void exists within that man.

If John Wayne ever cried in a movie (I don’t know he didn’t, but doubt it), a wave of sympathy and understanding would have engulfed this country, ignoring for a moment that he was that generation’s version of a draft dodger. More current ‘examples’ might be Arnie, Clint, Crowe and Cruise. Any of them show emotion and they receive understanding.

Ah, but let a woman cry and she is portrayed as either weak or manipulative. It’s the inverse of woman showing anger being called a beetch. Can we not ask if we see sexism rearing its ugly head before us? I’m an unabashed chauvinist and am uncomfortable when anyone cries, even myself. However, I am also wise enough to know that emotion is as natural as a fart. And we know what can happen if you suppress those.

To answer my own question, some. Some sexism. But more realistically, if you truly like someone, you understand and commune with them. If you don’t like them, you ridicule. Given the plethora of negative comments re this ‘event,’ one could easily conclude that HRC is not ‘admired’ by many in the MSM. And me, an inveterate under-dog rooter.
