Dowd on The Crying Game

1/9/08, 3:39 pm EST

Perfectly said:

There was a poignancy about the moment, seeing Hillary crack with exhaustion from decades of yearning to be the principal rather than the plus-one. But there was a whiff of Nixonian self-pity about her choking up. What was moving her so deeply was her recognition that the country was failing to grasp how much it needs her. In a weirdly narcissistic way, she was crying for us. But it was grimly typical of her that what finally made her break down was the prospect of losing.

Did the news just disappear? Who’s checking Bush right now?

Anyway, imagine, if you will, Obama crying because of the same question posed Hillary…….If Obama cried, would anyone still consider him Presidential??

If she cried over that kind of question, imagine what she’s going to do in the general election when the Repubes start ripping her a new one…..

That’s a good point, Coach. I certainly don’t trust her.

Not Bill Clinton | 1/9/2008, 4:45 pm EST

Well said. You know, we democrats got ourselves in a mess when we elected Bill. What are we going to do with these two? They’re never ever going away…!? this is so terrible i was 8 years old when bill clinton got elected! I dont even remember ronald reagan, he’s as distant to me as the trail of tears…

8 years old, Tim! 8! Now im 23. If Hillary wins two turns, I will be 31 years old when she leaves, totally devoid of youth… Totally without a chance to have ever been a part of a generation that says, ‘hey, see that? We did that.’ No, I’m just going to inherit my parent’s presidents, the way old timers used to follow their dads into the coal mines. Or, if you’re John Edwards, into The Mill.

You know, I am so sick of the baby boom it kills me.

Nixon Redux? | 1/9/2008, 5:05 pm EST

I am far from a Dowd fan, but I am glad to see that I am not the only one who sees Hillary as Nixon in Democrats’ clothing. She has that same sense of entitlement that Nixon used to bring to his campaigns. When he finally DID win, the entitlement had turned to vindictiveness; and the rest, as they say, became history.

Of course I assume that your readers know what Marx said about history: What is tragedy the first time around is farce when it repeats. If Hillary really IS Nixon redux, Lord only knows what kind of farce we are likely to face in the future! I may need to clear away the stuff stored under the bed, so I can hide there!

Colin | 1/9/2008, 5:44 pm EST

Dowd has no idea what was “moving” Hillary. In fact, Dowd rarely has any idea what’s going on.

She sure enjoys bashing Democrats tho. Did you hear Al Gore said he invented the internet?

I subscribed to this feed so I’d know when Taibbi had a new article up at RS. Guess I’ll find another way.

If elected to the White House, Hillary Clinton will ” CRY YOU A RIVER!! “

Deborah | 1/9/2008, 10:36 pm EST

Actually, Hillary Clinton did not cry, but if it was intended as some sort of stunt, it certainly did not work in the press. I saw a flood of negative media coverage before the vote saying her campaign was unraveling. What it did do apparently was get people to reflect on her excellent performances in debates and speeches and take another look. But if that is what it takes to get people to do what they should have been doing all along, whose fault is that?

I’m a woman, a feminist, and knew Rolling Stone when it was in diapers. Pardon me saying so, but I thought Maureen Dowd’s column about Hilary Clinton was more than just a tad b____y.

After reading some of these comments, I feel like vomiting- though I’d probably be accused of being contrived.

Spicoli | 1/10/2008, 11:37 am EST

Stop the spin people. She cried, or at least got choked up, over the smallest of questions. Stop the spin.

And, quit the denial. She’s an elitist in Democratic clothing. I can’t imagine, for one minute, another clinton in the white house. Not that Bill was bad, I loved him. But, Bush/Clinton/Clinton/Bush/Bush /Clinton??? Haven’t we had enough?

Or, cynically speaking, is there anything we can do about it?? Probably not.

likroper.com | 1/10/2008, 11:51 am EST

when i was little, i could cry and get whatever i wanted…

Nathan | 1/14/2008, 12:13 am EST

Wow, now I know Tim Dickinson is a fraud. When you start quoting Maureen Dowd–especially that article–you have exposed yourself as a fool. I’m not even a Clinton supporter and she disgusted me.

The bigotry on this blog is astounding. When you have an amazing list of substantive issues to attack Clinton on and yet people insist that she “faked” her “emotional” episode (My God, she was tired! Big deal!), it really shows how intense the irrational hatred of Clinton can be. I hate her on the ISSUES, not out of sheer misogynistic projection.

Again, voters reacted to the press coverage which went absolutely HYSTERICAL over NOTHING. That is what upset people. Instead of blaming the press, you blame her, especially when many people believed this episode showed she was too weak to be president? Come on. I hated that Obama was being slammed by the press for not being “black” enough. Do I blame Obama for that? Of course not.

Unbelievable.
