Huckabee: Ignorant or Inflammatory?

12/12/07, 3:21 am EST

From Huck’s website

We don’t have a dog in the fight between Sunnis and Shiites - our enemy is Islamic extremism in all its guises.

When someone briefs Mike on the Iran NIE, they might want to tell him that comparing Muslims to dogs is not helpful on the hearts-and-minds front.

HUCKABEE’S QUESTION OF THE MORMONS

“ARE JESUS AND SATAN BROTHERS?” IS A SYSTEMATIC ATTEMPT TO INCITE RELIGIOUS STRIFE, IN VIOLATION OF THE SPIRIT OF THE SACRED AMERICAN CONSTITUTION.

CAN ANY CANDIDATE WHO IS SO DISLOYAL TO OWN CONSTITUTION BE TRUSTED TO BE LOYAL TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE?

CAN ANY CANDIDATE WHO IS SO LACKING IN SENSIBILITY AND COMMON DECENCY BE TRUSTED WITH LEADERSHIP OF HIS PEOPLE?

DOES HUCKABEE SOMETIMES CUT DEALS WITH HIS SATAN; AND WHAT DOES HIS CHRISTIAN GOD HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT KIND OF BEHAVIOR?

that implies that the actors are dogs, and therefore that arabs are dogs. In arab societies dogs are treated like dirt and are forced to rummage for food in garbage, therefore, dogs are to arabs almost like pigs are to us, but worse.

Huck, isnt ignorant and his remark wasnt inflamatory. i dont think we have a dog in that fight either.

Jed Clampett | 12/12/2007, 4:40 pm EST

his intended audience may be american, but you can be sure the world is watching. The history record is full of the unintended consequences of careless speechifying.

I despise Huckabee, but not for this. Unless it was deliberate, this is nothing to get upset about. I suppose you could knock him for not being sensitive to muslim culture, but his audience was American so such phrases are fine.

Jed Clampett | 12/12/2007, 2:18 pm EST

just an expression in our culture, the deepest insult you could come up with in theirs. Haven’t we had enough of ignorant people who prefer to remain ignorant rather than educate themselves?

Insensitivity to other cultures is what made us the enemies we have now among foreigners, do we really want to make more enemies? would that make us safer?

‘we don’t have a dog’ is just an expression - he probably could have chosen better words…

SoootiredofstatingtheObvious | 12/12/2007, 10:22 am EST

Don’t we have enemies like white supremacists? Or is there another way top view a McVay in Oklahoma City? What about the owner of the “Company Store”? Who are we?

Huckabee is losing his compassion and reverting to the time-(honored)worn tradition of jingo politics.

Oh for an articulate, compassionate, intelligent voice of integrity…

John,

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but in a world where everyone runs around with a chip on their shoulder, his comments could have backlash.

Cynically speaking, I’d like to think that the ‘brains’ in Huckabee’s campaign thought this through clearly. He’s running for Prez of the U.S., NOT secty of the UN. His remark latently appeals to the biased right who he’s actively courting for votes. If flak arises from the left, he can use your argument as his defense. It’s a win-win.

Tim, It’s How The Game Is Played.

The reference to a dog in that quote is purely metaphorical. To assume he is directly calling muslims dogs is to assume that when someone uses the expression, the pot calling the kettle black they are actually talking about a pot.
