What Honesty Sounds Like

11/20/07, 4:55 pm EST

Obama, today, before a High School crowd in Manchester:

I made some bad decisions that I’ve actually written about. You know, got into drinking. I experimented with drugs. There was a whole stretch of time that I didn’t really apply myself a lot. It wasn’t until I got out of high school and went to college that I started realizing, “Man, I wasted a lot of time.”

He drank. He inhaled. He even snorted. He doesn’t lie about it. Or prevaricate. He uses that experience not to demagogue drugs, but to talk about them honestly as a distraction… a barrier to becoming the man he eventually matured into.

SO WHAT!!
I’ll admit it,,
I smoked some, I drank some, as a matter of fact, I’ve slept with a few too.
Where the trouble starts is when you lie about it.
Most folks don’t have a problem with remembering what happened,, It’s what they lied about happening or didn’t happen that starts to get fuzzy.
You know that old ” I’M GOING TO TELL ON YOU IF YOU DON’T,,,,,” ploy they used on us when we were young??
Didn’t work on me.
Don’t bother telling on me, if I did it, I’m man enough to fess up to it.
But then again, I’m not running for president.

I thought we were way past questions like these,,
Must be a slow news day..

So TIM, what is it?? Boxers or Briefs??

Somewhere In the Middle | 11/20/2007, 6:31 pm EST

I take my hat off to Obama for being so candid with the teenagers. One of the biggest flaws with the “war on drugs” is the lack of frankness coming from the leaders. Smoking pot does not mean you are going to turn into a mental vegetable (quite the contrary from my experience), nor does snorting a line mean your heart will explode out of your chest. By not being frank with kids or anyone for that matter about drugs, any credibility goes out the window.

honesty for his image | 11/20/2007, 6:36 pm EST

He has packaged himself real nice and pretty. Now look at his voting record and where his money comes from. He talks great, but unfortunately he rarely puts his money(well, vote) where his mouth is. Its more than the lieberman kyl amendment, he has consistently avoided anything that would piss off the people that finance him, yet at the same time speaks as if he is the new rational realist who can compromise and play fairly. Well if neutrality and non partisan politics is inaction, then Obama, you sir are certainly that. Go take money from lobbies while avoiding any real legislation some more.

War on drugs lite! | 11/20/2007, 6:43 pm EST

Please. Give me a real candidate against this immoral ‘war on drugs’. If I wanted someone who just talks about drugs not being the devil, then I could look at any of the democratic candidates. Show me a candidate who will stop imprisoning a million people each year in this country for nothing, show me a candidate who will stop this prison racket, show me a candidate who will stop this invasion on personal liberties. Obama has no teeth on this subject. Who cares if he did drugs, I care about what he will do to change these immoral prohibition laws.

DirtyDennis | 11/20/2007, 7:44 pm EST

SS

Thank you. Much ado about nothing. Sadly, ‘nothing’ is what we’re going to get from these folks about drugs.

That’s the point I’ve been trying to make!!
WE’RE GETTING SOLD THE SAME BILL OF GOODS WE’VE ALWAYS BEEN SOLD, JUST A DIFF USED CAR SALESMAN IS GIVING US HIS PITCH!!

DD, Turn on that Bull $hit detector, listen to it buzz…
And it’s not only on our war on drugs,, ( wink, wink, grin, grin )
It’s on every damn sector the “GUBMENT” has any power over!!

Anyone want to know why our Military has such a large budget??
Aside from a few mistakes, KILLING PEOPLE AND MAKING WAR is the best thing OUR GUBMENT has going for it right now.
Education??
FEMA??
Soc ial Security??
Protecting the boarders??
All failures,, but KILLING PEOPLE AND MAKING WAR??
Name me one country on the face of the planet that does it better??

TT | 11/21/2007, 12:55 pm EST

Educated at a Madrasa and a drug addict? He’s clearly not fit to be President. Let the Swiftboating begin.

TT | 11/21/2007, 1:26 pm EST

Oh yeah, his middle name is Hussein. Need I say more?

DirtyDennis | 11/21/2007, 1:54 pm EST

DWM,

Elsewhere I commented on your tirades against the UN. I see now I’m mistaken. You’re against ANY form of government, or rather, that form of government that doesn’t meet YOUR expectations.

I touched on the whole need thingie for government but perhaps we should look closer to it. Do you or do you not agree that mankind is better for organizing governing agencies? Or, do you think each and every one of us should be left to our own devices to determine good and bad, right and wrong?

I think we know the answer to that, so the next question becomes how MUCH government and in what form. I’m going to take a hairy-assed guess and say you prefer a democratic form of government. But you don’t want TOO much democratic form of government.

You don’t want salmonella so you’re probably for the food and drug administration. You probably don’t want people smacking you around and taking your possessions so you’re probably for the justice department. You probably don’t want other countries messing with you so you’re for the state and defense departments.

The truth is, you’re fine with government as long as it does what YOU want. Well, young man, may I suggest you cease with the blanket denunciations and begin with specifics. Governments are run by humans, which we have come to learn are fraught with frailties. Those aside, in a nation this big, any action taken by the government has a reasonable assurance that it will please some and displease others. It is the nature of the beast. (Tim!! How the game is played??)

Given these ‘realities,’ you come across as Snoopy cursing the Red Baron. A comic figure. Governments are not the problem. The UN is not the problem. PEOPLE are the problem. You, me, all of us.

Anotherbrick | 11/21/2007, 2:17 pm EST

I’m sorry but didn’t Obama already admit this on the tonight show when he started running??? If not I need more of the bud I was smoking at that time!!!

likroper.com | 11/21/2007, 3:28 pm EST

but you know; time is just an illusion based upon our particular planet’s circumference and rate of rotation around our sun – so why take it too seriously? – since time is essentially innumerable, why worry about it? – in fact; druids worship time…

gonads | 11/21/2007, 9:31 pm EST

boxers or briefs is a bad analogy, rarely is a politician worthy of even being worn on my ass. I know some of those repubs would like to hold my junk tho.

Oh, Good Grief. | 11/21/2007, 10:19 pm EST

To: War On Drugs Lite.

I have seen Obama speak twice; once in New Orleans, once in Atlanta.

Both times he dedicated a full paragraph to lessening the minimum prison sentences for possession of crack cocaine. He thinks its unfair that coke possession is treated like a minor offense, and crack possession warrants serious jail time.

it’s very easy to be cynical and feel that all this amounts to little more than “the war on drugs lite.” but “isn’t the war on drugs lite,” better than the war on drugs?

This is a democracy; millions of people do not understand the plight of those who fall in the war on drug’s crosshairs. Millions of Americans — maybe a majority or close to it — feel that the war on drugs should be fought full-force, with little to no mercy for users, dealers, addicts, or duffle bag boys caught in between.

Obama is trying to move us in the right direction. He’s a lot more committed about it than his primary rival.

Easy to be negative, harder to be positive, harder still to weigh the good with the bad. I for one applaud this speech he made, and I agree with Somewhere In The Middle; one of the biggest flaws in the way we have over-hyped the perils of drug use is that kids smoke weed for the first time, don’t go ballistic, and begin to doubt everything they’ve been told on the subject. We need credible leadership on the war on drugs.

likroper.com | 11/21/2007, 11:11 pm EST

why is it killers in texas only get probation, while some drug dealers get 10+ years?

eastwood | 11/22/2007, 12:12 am EST

Likroper,
“why is it killers in texas only get probation, while some drug dealers get 10+ years?”

Because some drug dealers are black and killers in Texas who get probation generally are not.

The drug wars started with Nixon, who wanted to check the influence of young people in politics. Weed was a different matter, check Randolph Hearst to see why that herb is now banned in the U.S. It has nothing to do with morality and everything to do with economics. And federal drug policy has nothing to do with morality either; it has to do with creating issues that will elect your next democratic or republican president. Drugs like this would benefit the public far more than electoral politics would-at least at this stage.

You got it,,
I’m against any form of government that holds back the human potential.
I’m against all organization that’s designed to hold back the spirit of humanity!!
Humanity in it’s truest form is something that changes the world.
How dare those who tell us not to smoke on the patio.
How dare those who tell us not to sleep in the office.
But more than that, HOW DARE YOU WHO TELL US TO GROW UP!!
Is it that you’ve grown up?? OR is it that you’ve just gotten boring??
Have you forgot what it is to remember a dream and tell someone of it??
OR have you forgotten to dream??
How can someone live without dreaming??
A dream is just like hope, it just don’t have any words to describe it.
You want peace in the world?? Try creating peace here at home.
You want to feed the starving in the world??
Then start by feeding the curiosities of the children here at home!!
Want to stop war??
Then stop fighting those who live in the same place as you..
I’m not asking you to agree with me..
I’m not asking you to understand me..
ALL I’M ASKING YOU FOR IS A OPEN MIND..
A willingness to hear others,
to listen to things that others think are important..
Sure, I make fun of things,,
How those who Manage seem to try and Manage is funny as hell.
What gives one person the right to govern another??
Who makes the rules, and who gave them that authority??
THESE IDIOTS WHO ARE IN CHARGE NOW,, who the phuk wants to listen to them anymore??
It make my head hurt and it’s something that keeps me from dreaming…

Our current form of government, is this what the founding fathers intended??
It’s ours to call..
ALL WE NEED TO DO IS CALL IT..
Call it by it’s name,,, and that name is ” FAILURE ”
I’m not asking for a CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION..
I’M ASKING FOR A CONSTITUTIONAL REVIVAL!!
I’m asking for a government of the people, by the people, for the people..
GOD DAMMIT, I WANT MY NATION BACK!!

likroper.com | 11/22/2007, 1:15 pm EST

i actually kinda knew that eastwood (see below), sometimes i just ask stupid questions on purpose….

eastwood | 11/23/2007, 1:50 am EST

Delta Wild Man,

You wrote: “I’m asking for a government of the people, by the people, for the people..
GOD DAMMIT, I WANT MY NATION BACK!!”

Now exactly what did you lose? You no doubt voted Republican twice in a row for Bush. Now you act surprised when conservative ideology fails. Now you act like you had no control when you are the reason our nation is in the situation it’s in.

eastwood | 11/23/2007, 1:52 am EST

Strong defense? Look at the results: Failure to prevent the 911 attacks and the anthrax attacks. Failure to secure the homeland against natural disasters like fires, hurricanes. Failure to win foreign wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Failure to provide soldiers with adequate armor, training and medical care. Throwing billions of dollars away funding outdated and unusable weapons systems when that money could be better spent winning the war or providing healthcare.

eastwood | 11/23/2007, 1:53 am EST

The truth is that it’s no wonder you’re having an emotional outburst. Your entire view of life and your recommendations for fixing it have been proven wrong. Conservatism as expressed by the Republican party has been proven utterly, disastrously wrong. You would do well for yourself and others to refrain from voting in the next election since your choices have been so horrible. Go watch t.v and leave politics to people who are intelligent enough to comprehend it.

Delta Wild Man | 11/24/2007, 2:40 pm EST

Eastwood
You could be right, It might be better that the majority of the American voters stay at home next election and watch T.V.,
You could be Right On Track, with your views of how our economy needs to run.
I’d like to ask your opinion on the matter.
Would you replace our current system with, let’s say a STALINIST SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT??
That way People Like YOU Can Decide On:
Who Votes,
Who Gets Educated,
Who Gets Medical Treatment,
Who Gets to STAY AT HOME on VOTING DAY and WATCH T.V.
Who’s SMART ENOUGH TO VOTE and WHO’s NOT
and ULTAMATLY, Who Lives And Who Dies??
Mr. Eastwood, I’m not saying that, This is the type of government your supporting, I’m just saying that we YOU think YOUR THE ONE WHO NEEDS TO DECIDE WHO VOTES AND WHO STAYS AT HOME AND WATCHES T.V., Your sounding like YOU DO!
MR. Eastwood, I’ve seen your form of government, and I’ve noticed a lot of people tend to die, and the leaders don’t resign, they tend to get hung by the vary people they once ruled over.
Yes, Let MR. EASTWOOD EAT CAKE then we can all meet at the guillotine afterwards and top off a few Tyrants!

DirtyDennis | 11/24/2007, 7:01 pm EST

Uh DWM, how does that differ from YOUR concept. YOU want YOUR government. Haven’t we been through all this already. Of course, you didn’t respond the last time I called you on that.

Look back on your posts, a common theme is what YOU want. Given that, I find it hard to believe YOU can be critical of Clint.

But go ahead, Make My Day!!

DirtyDennis | 11/24/2007, 7:22 pm EST

Actually, I believe we may be astride a delightful non sequiteur (?). You seem to be saying that Clint can’t want the government he wants. From that one can only conclude you believe he should want the government he doesn’t want. How Vonneguttian (phew, THAT’s ugly, I guess that’s why no one’s created a word for old Kurt’s outlook).

likroper.com | 11/24/2007, 10:58 pm EST

i say government should be available at a mall or supermarket kiosk so you can order up the kind of government you want – either that or just deepen democracy by allowing us to vote from ATMs or something…

Delta Wild Man | 11/25/2007, 12:51 pm EST

DD
Love to post the whole CONSTITUTION in here, but I’ll bet that wont work.
For such a Wonderful Work of Art, there are very damn few Americans who have read it.
If that was the type of Government that we currently lived under, I’m pretty sure I’d agree with it.
What we now live under is a Bureaucratic States of America.
Bureaucracy like stripping one group of their rights so that everyone will have the same rights.
Give you and example,
Suppose 6 white guys were beating up on a black guy, would that be a “HATE CRIME”??
Now turn it around and let it happen down in Louisiana.
A white male can’t use the “N” word,, but it’s alright for black rap artists and comedians to use that word..
Are we going to make up for that injustice by making drinking fountains & bathrooms that only White People can use??
Or what about a 28 year old teacher having sex with one of “HER” 13 year old students?
Now switch that to ” HIS ” 13 year old student..
Now we’ve got a right to own property, unless that property can generate more taxes if someone else owned it.
Oh, and don’t forget, Every American Has the Right to own a gun, as long as you don’t live in the nation’s capital.
Let’s not serve duck liver in New York, and for god’s sake, don’t fire up that smoke in a bar in east Jersey.
And with regards to FAT PEOPLE!!
Now that our GUBMENT is planning on taking over Health Care, guess who’s going to decide what you can eat and what you can’t?? It Sure The Hell Wont Be You!!
Little Bit’s and Peace’s.. Just like the Nazi’s started with.. Stripping you of this small right, then another,, in the name of HELPING YOU!!
You tell me how it’s helping ME & This Nations, by supporting a substandard Public Education System that Cost more and Produces less than any other in the world!!

Justice in America Is No Longer Blind, as a matter of fact, It’s became pretty damn biased.
and a Biased Justice System is worse than No Justice System at All.
DirtyDennis, I guess what I would like to see is, getting back to the original article, except I agree we need a little updating, but we need to be very damn careful how we update,
another example.
All Men are created equal, needs to be changed to All Americans are created Equal.
Now I don’t doubt for one minute that that’s not going to piss of someone, but hay, with a national healthcare system and education system likes we got, we can’t afford to pay for the worlds health care and pay for educating the American Continent now can we??

Anonymous | 11/25/2007, 2:43 pm EST

DWM,

So much and so little. But it’s raining and cold and I don’t want to go outside.

To begin with, I doubt any institute or person could stand up to the scrutiny you’re exhibiting. I dare say neither you nor I could, AND that we’d resent same. Can the country as a whole, and it’s institutions, not be accorded the same consideration?

Reminds me of the little ol lady who called the police complaining about her neighbor. Seems he was ‘exposing’ himself to her. The police arrived and she pointed out the ‘offender’ from the window.

“But we can only see his top half,” the police pointed out.

“Well, get up on this chair and have a look,” she replied.

I think you need to get down off the chair Wild Thing.

DirtyDennis | 11/25/2007, 4:59 pm EST

DWM That was me if you hadn’t figured it out. Something erased my name unbeknownst to me.

Delta Wild Man | 11/25/2007, 5:37 pm EST

If you want to cut through the bull $hit, it boils down to this.
Every crime against every American is a hate crime,
Any Word that degrades any American is a “N” word.
Any minor student molested by their teacher is RAPE..
You as an American Citizen should have not more rights than I do as an American Citizen.
We have the right to pursue happiness. but we don’t have a guarantee not to fail..
What if that happiness is smoking crack and robbing little old ladies??
Shouldn’t the little old ladies at least have the right to pack a .357 to blow some crack heads head off??
You have the right to drop out of high school, but in doing so, don’t expect to be the one to call when someone needs brain surgery, and your damn sure not going to get paid like it..

I have the right to invest part of my income into health care insurance.
And by Investing part of my income, I HAVE THE RIGHT TO PRIVATE HEALTH CARE!!
People who choose not to Invest in health care insurance should have the basic of coverage.
But that is all!!!
By turning all health care insurance into a bureaucracy controlled by the GUBMENT, your going to lessen the quality of service that I’m made to accept right now and made to subsidize..
I give you the example public schools,, most expensive in the world, yet we didn’t even make it to the top 10% in production.
Who has the right to SCREW THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THIS WAY??
You folks may be happy with it,, but I’m not..

DirtyDennis | 11/25/2007, 10:07 pm EST

Wild Thing,

We’re trodding down the same path we did the other day. I laid out some points and you never responded. Perhaps you should review earlier threads lest I have to reconjur.
