Debate Wrapup

11/16/07, 12:00 am EST

If you missed it you really didn’t miss it. Ooof. What a lousy debate — starting with the CNN moderators. Why have voters ask questions if Suzanne Malveaux is just going to tack her own question on the end? Garbage.

Quickly: Clinton looked caffeinated tonight. She was back on her game and was prepared to dish it as well as take it. Her line about having an “asbestos pant-suit” on for the occasion was pretty funny. All the squabbling in the beginning really didn’t amount to much. Edwards seemed eager to continue the attack, but the spontaneous booing by the crowd of any Clinton slights really made even invidious comparisons hard to pull off.

The only exchange that was worth a damn was Obama and Clinton sparring over Social Security payroll taxes. (You know it a dreary debate when the best moment comes in an exchange about tax arcana.) Obama called Clinton on her ridonckulous assertion that people making over $95,000 a year — and therefore earning above the payroll tax cutoff — are “middle class.”

The crowd booed him for comparing her prestidigitation to that of Giuliani or Romney — but the point was fair — and spot on. The top six percent of money earners are not middle-class. They’re not. A lot of people in the $100k to $200k bracket are wheelhouse Democrats — and party funders — which I suspect is why Hillary is so unwilling to go there. But her parry was weak, and a rare clumsy moment in an otherwise polished performance. So score one for Obama.

Watching the two of them go at it is a little high-school though. Obama’s the cool smart kid. Clinton’s the savagely smart, kind of insecure one. She couldn’t help but begin her retort by correcting Obama for having repeatedly talked about a “tax cut” by mistake — “First of all,” she said, “I think you meant a tax ‘increase.’ Because that’s what it would be.” Gimme a break.

I think the best night was had by Biden, who continued to show a depth of knowledge surpassing that of the other candidates. Dodd and Richardson always talk about being experienced, but Biden is actually bringing that experience to bear in his answers.

It’s impressive that he spoke to Musharraf and Bhuto before Bush did this week. That’s meaningful. His answer on Supreme Court nominees was also impressive. Richardson ticked off his talking points. Biden actually knew what he was talking about when he referred to the 14th amendment and the right to privacy. He also dressed down Malveaux for her question-jacking. Well done, sir.

To sum up: Hillary had one notable stumble, but otherwise was sharp. Edwards’ boo birds defused his attack. Obama looked good — though after criticizing Clinton so sharply on the drivers license issue, you’d think he’d have had a sharper answer of his own. Biden keeps making a case for himself over Richardson as a dark horse.

UPDATE: Yglesias nails CNN’s ‘gotcha’ game.

Joe Biden himself said that congress has an aproval rating of 11%..
You know who has a higher aproval rating??
Dick Cheney…
A Joe Biden quote!

We got problems,, why??
The democrats are doing the same thing that got the republicans kicked out of office..
Who the hell are we going to vote for this time??

Delta Wild Man | 11/16/2007, 12:40 am EST

If anyone’s wondering how it is that the American political landscape came to its current sorry state, all they have to do is look at this article.

“The best night was had by Biden,” the author says, “who continued to show a depth of knowledge surpassing that of the other candidates.”

The fact that this first and only reference to Joe Biden appears in Paragraph 6 (of an eight-paragraph article) while Hillary’s **pantsuit** makes it to Paragraph 2 pretty much says it all.

Good debate wrapup,Tim. i think Hillary made a good comeback but Obama won.i agree that Biden has done better the last 2 debates, Richardson did well again. Edwards was the loser out of the frontrunners. Not enough of Kucinich tonight.

ak | 11/16/2007, 2:11 am EST

tax arcana… nicely played… i’m using that one.

Delta Wild Man | 11/16/2007, 9:59 am EST

The morning after…

Looking back on the debate, and reading the articles this morning, because I did not see all of the debate.
I was at my daughters recital, so I was unable to watch the debate from start to finish, I did watch it from finish to start.

About half way through the ” start “, I realized that this could only happen on CNN, “CLINTON NEWS NETWORK”, because Wolf Blitzer was neither a wolf or a blitzer, he was more like a middle school student asking his teacher ” Hillary Clinton ” questions, and hoping like heck he didn’t pizz her off..
More than once, I noticed Hillary Clinton giving those EVIL EYES at Wolf and a few other Males on stage..
You know those EVIL EYES, the same expression of fear that a lioness has right before she sinks her fangs into your neck and clamps down upon your windpipe. And Wolf was not the only one, I saw it when Obama questioned her truthfulness and when Edwards started “SLINGING REPUBLICAN MUD”..

By the way, someone needs to tell John Edwards that George W. Bush is not running next year.
If George W. Bush was running next year, John Edwards would have a chance in hell of winning because old SLICK WILLY himself would step back into the ring, and win the democrat nomination.

Joe Biden was not the same old Joe, that we’ve grown to love, Joe didn’t act “ONE TOKE OVER THE LINE” during this debate,, thus putting the “STONER” votes in limbo..

Obama stumbled and puttered and fizzled and farted through the night, I guess we all can have a Hillary Night now and then.

Dennis Kucenich stood before millions and showed everyone he did not pay $1200.00 for a hair cut, he stuck with his usual Hitler comb over. Spoke of bringing unity back to Washington, and said he would do that by trying to Impeach the current president and his vice president, both of whom have a higher approval rating than congress.

The Gov of New Mexico spoke of what he would do with the middle east, our border, and who he was and what he was all about.

The white haired guy,, what’s his name,, anyhow,, after the Hispanic guy asked his question, he started speaking in toungs and said something about spending a summer in Honduras.

All and all a very misleading evening.
Why?? Because after the election, NOT A DAMN ONE OF THEM, ON EITHER SIDE OF THE ISLE ARE GOING TO GIVE A RAT’s AZZ ABOUT US..

bk | 11/16/2007, 12:49 pm EST

Delta, I agree with your Clinton News Network phrase. I felt that Clinton got a beatdown last night but they immediately spun it like she had ‘won’ the debate. I’m SO over her! She so calculated and robotic.

I thought Obama did a lot better than he had in the past. And I love Biden but he’s getting this Kerry defeatist thing now, ugh. He was the balls candidate! Keep up that momentum Joe!

These MSM debates are getting so obvious and predictable, it’s clear that they plan on choosing a candidate for us and again, the American people will have no say in who runs this country. I’m losing hope.

I prefer the you tube debates and the real people questions, I don’t even understand why Wolf still has a job.

How about we put together Matt Taibbi, Randi Rhodes, Keith Olbermann, Greydon Carter and Bill Maher to question these candidates and find out just how democratic they are, with EQUAL amounts of time and questions INCLUDING Mike Gravel?

PS. Tim, your interview with RP was great!

Buckley | 11/16/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Who? That’s easy.
Biden.

Biden.

Our family makes about $125K per year. After paying $15K/year for health insurance, $36K/year in taxes, car payments, a mortgage and two kids in college, there’s not much left. No wheelhouse Democrat or party funder here. We are decidedly in the middle-class.
Should the payroll tax cutoff be increased? I don’t think there should be a cutoff – period. If we can spend trillions on killing, we can take care of those less fortunate than us.

Delta Wild Man | 11/16/2007, 4:33 pm EST

Fear and Loathing on the campaign trail in Las Vegas..
Oh God.
Could it be the good doctor is trying to tell us something from beyond the grave??

Anyone other than me see something weird here??
Duncan Hunter…
Fred Thompson…
Hunter / Thompson…
Now let’s drop the ( / )..

What’s up with that??

Now if someone could get steppin wolf to play the theme from twilight zone at the very beginning of magic carpet ride..

bk | 11/16/2007, 5:51 pm EST

I’m losing my outrageously expensive Cobra health insurance next month. I don’t need a freakin’ tax cut Hillary, I need a plan I can afford before tax time!

Or a husband, anyone? anyone? Willing to relocate to Paris!

Delta Wild Man | 11/16/2007, 7:40 pm EST

Just as I thought,,
Some student is coming forward saying that CNN told to ask the pearl / diamond question instead of the one she really wanted to ask..
Same old chit people just a diff night!!

Delta Wild Man | 11/16/2007, 7:41 pm EST

Maria Luisa, the UNLV student who asked Hillary Clinton whether she preferred “diamonds or pearls” at last night’s debate wrote on her MySpace page this morning that CNN forced her to ask the frilly question instead of a pre-approved query about the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

Delta Wild Man | 11/17/2007, 1:43 am EST

Why??

Delta Wild Man | 11/17/2007, 11:42 am EST

Robert Novac just announced that things are about to get a little dirtier if Obama don’t back down..

(Agents of Sen. Hillary Clinton are spreading the word in Democratic circles that she has scandalous information about her principal opponent for the party’s presidential nomination, Sen. Barack Obama, but has decided not to use it. The nature of the alleged scandal was not disclosed.)

I knew this was coming.
Hillary is not going to take no more chit from Obama and she sent old Novac to warn him..

Delta Wild Man | 11/18/2007, 1:35 pm EST

Well Well Well!
Guess what’s on the Sunday Morning News Programs??
Seems Hillary has got some dirt on Obama..
Didn’t I say something about that yesterday??

DirtyDennis | 11/19/2007, 10:20 am EST

DWM,

Are you SO insecure that you have to pat yourself on the back? We see; we know.

You’re beginning to act like MSM where “who’s first” is all important. Au contraire.

Jed Clampett | 11/19/2007, 12:08 pm EST

I think it’s great, starts to expose herself for the ‘politics as usual’ contender that she seems to have been groomed for.

I tend to like Obama, he’s a bit more his own man. He still has the power of his convictions on his side, though having to rethink issues and understand their nuances much deeper than the simpletons in the audience could jeopardize his standing in that respect. Doesn’t it make sense that you would want to know exactly who is here, what they do and how they contribute or drain from the economy instead of lumping all under one biggoted lable and hunt them down like animals, subjecting them to even more indignity than they endure now? So what if they do have ID? Don’t you think it’s a good idea knowing who really is feeding you? You just might be deporting the person responsible for invening the next efficient power system.

I need to watch the debate to opine on it with a little more knowlege, but it really does seem like in an impartial country with equal opportunity for all, all would garner equal face time on a debate that is broadcast nationally on a station that is popular and reaches a large percentage of the population. Is it a debate or a commercial?

Delta Wild Man | 11/20/2007, 5:22 pm EST

Wasn’t it Shakespeare who said Hang the Lawyers??
I’ll go for that in a way..
Let’s see what happens if we quit voting for anyone who is or has ever been a lawyer, both sides of the isle..
I’ll bet things start to get better for everyone!!

DD
A vote for most of those who are running is a show of support for the ways things are going now..
Don’t know about you DD, but I’m a little sick of it!!!

DirtyDennis | 11/21/2007, 10:13 pm EST

Agreed
