The Secret Experience of Hillary Clinton

10/31/07, 12:34 pm EST

This clip is all you really needed to watch of the Democratic debate last night.

We see Hillary lamely blaming the National Archives for the Bill Clinton orchestrated attempt to suppress documents that might actually shed some light on what First Lady Clinton’s policy role was in that White House.

This is the first time I’ve seen Hillary genuinely flustered — just making it up as she answered. Fumbling on about the 20 million pieces of paper at the Archives, topping it off with this lame bit of technocratic mumbojumbo about how the “Archives will move as fast as its circumstances and processes demand.”

This artless Clintonian dodge was clearly Barack Obama’s best opening.

And he starts strong, with a jab about Cheney-esqe secrecy and an effective upper-cut: “not releasing these records — a the same time, Hillary, that you’re claming this [time in the White House] as the basis of your experience — is a problem.”

But then Obama — who earlier jokingly compared himself to Rocky, with Hillary, implausibly, as Apollo Creed — pulled his punches. He shadow boxed for the next two minutes with high-minded platitudes about bringing people back into the process, blah, blah, blah, inflicting no more damage and tiring everybody in the audience out.

Fortunately for Hillary, this fight night was a spit decision. Edwards and Obama both had good showings — defusing each other’s appeal. Worse, Chris Dodd also woke up. And Joe Biden lit up the stage with his novel arguments about Pakistan — and of course his line of the night about Rudy Giuliani:

“There’s only three things he ever mentions in a sentence: a noun, a verb, and 9/11.”

Hillary, did get a little frustrated, but almost the whole first hour was about trying to discredit her, i thought she did well responding to the charges and counter charges. Kucinich, Biden, Dodd and Obama did good, Richardson was right when he crit ized the others and hosts for the negative questions and personal attacks.

Michael | 10/31/2007, 4:35 pm EST

All the dems did good tonight; but nobody scored big enough to change the present climate and Hillary’s large lead. It all Hillary in 2008! Go Girl!

blood for oil of olay | 10/31/2007, 4:57 pm EST

I am not going to be voting Hillary in 2008, but I have to say that she did an excellent job with the question about Spitzer’s proposed dl policy. I was impressed. I was also apalled about the fake indignance displayed by the other candidates with respect to her response. I particularly expected out of Obama.

East | 10/31/2007, 6:17 pm EST

If Hillary won 2008 presidential election,America lost, barring Hillary ,whoever won America is healthy.

jeffery mcnary | 10/31/2007, 6:26 pm EST

yo east,
please re-write. i’m missing something. or were you doing kucinich-speak?

Kevin | 10/31/2007, 7:45 pm EST

Thanks, East, for that view from the future in a parallel dimension.

Jed Clampett | 10/31/2007, 7:56 pm EST

is that the same parallel universe in which Al Gore is president and Bush is baseball commissioner intent on finding out who’s doing steroids if he has to tap every phone in baseball?

I bet they are at peace there and not wondering if our leaders will start WWIII.

Hugh Askew | 10/31/2007, 10:29 pm EST

The next president has to be one who will be “keeper of the Secrets”, one who upholds the Warren Commision and all of the rest of the lies that have happened including 9-11. Bill did it and so will Hillary. The secret government can’t trust the other candiates and they are not on the inside anyway.

DirtyDennis | 11/1/2007, 7:43 am EST

I’m getting a little weary of all the Hillary bashing, especially by RS. The candidates are more concerned with denigrating one candidate than they are in extolling their own assets. I know this is nothing new, but I’d rather RS would keep matters in perspective.

Should Hillary ‘fall,’ I have no doubt ‘the pack’ would then turn on whomever is perceived to be ahead. This is leadership?

mikeky | 11/1/2007, 9:11 am EST

after that debate (where all the candidates ganged up on hillary and verbally slapped her around), i’m definitely voting for her. democrats have a way of beating each other up before the republicans can get around to it. you know, the circular firing squad. leave it to the democrats to try to take each other down in as ugly a fashion as possible.

so hillary it is. i’m disappointed in obama–nothing but platitudes. and i’m disappointed in edwards–he’s flailing in general directions hoping for something to stick. it’s sort of pitiful.

go hillary. kick everybody’s ass.

Coach | 11/1/2007, 11:13 am EST

Hmmm….seems people haven’t figured out the debates yet. News of the Hillary bashing came out 24 hours before the debate even began….Isn’t that a tipoff to the choreography of the event?

Debates aren’t the way to find out what these candidates are about…..those things are stages, choreographed, and rehearsed. Voting record is the way to find out. If the republicans use voting record to find out about their candidates, they’ll be disappointed. If Democrats start looking at Hillary’s voting record, rather than looking at polls, they’ll be disappointed. She votes FOR the Patriot Act, FOR the Iraq invasion and FOR a bill to name the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group, and FOR the President to have carte blanche to invade Iran. She’s posing people……….

Shagra | 11/1/2007, 12:34 pm EST

To understand Hillary, one must first grasp the concept that most complex matters do not have ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers. That she can access a situation from more than one point of view is an evolutionary advance. (My apologies to those who think humans can’t evolve, just because they haven’t).

You go girl!!! Don’t let the gang bangers get you down.

Coach | 11/1/2007, 1:31 pm EST

Shagra: “To understand Hillary, one must first grasp the concept that most complex matters do not have ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers”

I’m so sick of responses like that one. If Yes and No aren’t the only answers, does that mean that ‘maybe’ or ‘i don’t know’ are answers? Imagine, after all these years of peers/elders telling you that ‘maybe’ and ‘i don’t know’ aren’t answers, all of a sudden they are……

It’s either ‘too complex’ because you don’t know, or it’s ‘too complex’ because you don’t want to irritate a certain group………the fundamental reality is that EVERY question is yes or know, unless you ‘don’t know’……

Shagra | 11/1/2007, 2:37 pm EST

My, how linear of you. Fortunately, Hillary has the gift of not being linear.

To quote a friend:

Most things should NOT be answered “yes” or “no”. That’s when mistakes start happening – because decisions are based on one of two absolutes that are not really absolutes.

A successful leader must be aware that there are other persons different from us in this world.

And, fellow ‘different person’, what may require a ‘yes’ answer one day, can receive a perfectly valid ‘no’ answer the next.

A very simple example below:

“Hey, Dad, can I have the car?”
“Yes, Son, it’s a beautiful and safe day to drive.”
“Hey, Dad, can I have the car?”
“No, Son, there’s an ice storm outside.”

Intelligent flexibility is not a ‘maybe’ or ‘people pleasing tactic’. It is an evolved skill that a good leader would do well to master.

As to being, as you said, ‘so sick’… May you get well soon.

Delta Wild Man | 11/1/2007, 3:46 pm EST

Hirrary Crinton has some probrems with john edwards and obama,,
The rear probrem is that both of them are behind in the polls.
The Chinese peopre see this probrem, but they are going to keep sending money to Hirrary.
The peopre of China want Hirrary to win the erection!!

Coach | 11/1/2007, 4:05 pm EST

Shagra: You just reinforced my argument about it either being yes or no with the following ‘example’:

“Hey, Dad, can I have the car?”
“Yes, Son, it’s a beautiful and safe day to drive.”
“Hey, Dad, can I have the car?”
“No, Son, there’s an ice storm outside.”

Either way, it’s Yes or No. I didn’t see: “Yes, but…..”

dont bother with reason | 11/1/2007, 5:18 pm EST

Coach, many have already picked their candidate evidence and rational argument be [pointless censorship]. You won’t get anywhere. People that like her are similar to the people who like Rudy or so many other candidates: its the image they are attracted to, not their voting record, or their past corrupt history.

DirtyDennis | 11/1/2007, 7:09 pm EST

Shapeshifter,

Corrupt? I keep hearing that but have yet to hear specifics. If she be corrupt, in her life that’s a crime. Where are the criminal charges? Or are these but spurious claims?

Jed Clampett | 11/1/2007, 10:21 pm EST

seems they searched for many years and destroyed alot of lives looking for evidence of corruption with whitewater. While they didn’t find any evidence of corruption, it did give them the impetus to delve into the president’s personal life and use set the trap to impeach him. A neocon calling Hillary corrupt is a bit… What’s the word?…

Shagra | 11/2/2007, 12:29 pm EST

Hi Coach!

Shagra: You just reinforced my argument…

Thanks for quoting me. Except you forgot to include the preceeding remark–a ’simple’ example.

The world issues facing us today are not simple.

But, hey, you’re not going to change my mind and I’m not going to change yours. I hope we can agree on one thing, however. We are most fortunate to live in a country where we can speak our minds.

Kathy | 11/7/2007, 1:59 pm EST

“Hillary Bashing”? since when is it bashing to continually ask a question when you don’t get an answer? and to say that it is too complex for a yes or no answer? how rediculous! does she support it or not? if she does it is yes if she doesn’t it is no if she is playing both sides of the fence it is too complex! instead of slick willy it is now slick hilly.
