Real Fake News: FEMA Asks, FEMA Answers

10/26/07, 1:01 pm EST

Al Kamen reports that FEMA is learning lessons from the Daily Show: Staging a mock press conference, and airing it as though it were real.

“Are you happy with FEMA’s response so far?” a reporter asked. Another asked about “lessons learned from Katrina.”"I’m very happy with FEMA’s response so far,” Johnson said, hailing “a very smoothly, very efficiently performing team.”

…Very smooth, very professional. But something didn’t seem right. The reporters were lobbing too many softballs. No one asked about trailers with formaldehyde for those made homeless by the fires. And the media seemed to be giving Johnson all day to wax on and on about FEMA’s greatness.

Of course, that could be because the questions were asked by FEMA staffers playing reporters. We’re told the questions were asked by Cindy Taylor, FEMA’s deputy director of external affairs, and by “Mike” Widomski, the deputy director of public affairs. Director of External Affairs John “Pat” Philbin asked a question, and another came, we understand, from someone who sounds like press aide Ali Kirin.

Somebody needs to be fired for this.

UPDATE: FEMA’s PR director has been… promoted!

UPDATE II: Faker fired!

This would be side-splintingly hilarious, if it weren’t so disgustingly pathetic. I don’t think firing someone is really the answer. This is a cultural phenomenon.

why is this not a bigger story?

This very similar to the Bush interview with Iraq forces where the questions were planned from before. Well atleast they were real soldiers!

So how is this different from Fox news and the build up to the Iraq war? one has to laugh because I can’t shed any more tears.

We’re good, just ask us.

Seriously – why isn’t this a bigger story? This is the first I’ve seen of it. it isn’t on any of the major news outlets’ news feeds at all.

captbilly | 10/26/2007, 2:17 pm EST

This was started by Bush when he had planted “fake” reporters ask him questions he wanted asked. We have put up with so much from Bush in the past 7 years that we don’t even know what’s outragious any more. Many people complain about congress, it has a lower rating than even Bush himself, but the worst thing they ever did is to agree not to take impeaching Bush of the table. I don’t think that any president in history has lied more than Bush or violated the constitution and his oath more than Bush. We will not heal this great divide that now exists in this country until those who have flaunted the law are brought to justice. This includes Osama, the people who allowed our phone conversations to be monitored illegally, and the president who responded to 9/11 like a kid in a candy store, except instead of taking candy he took the constitution.

This isn’t a political story. This is about a shared performance-anxiety. Americans are so pathetic and scared to make mistakes that everything has become scripted. Any of you folks out there educators? Maybe you know what I’m talking about. This is a cultural phenomenon. it’s not restricted to the current administration or politics in general in any way.

Firing squads for those in public office that betray the trust placed in them should be standard procedure…but that would leave most of Washington DC vacant…

Ask any Hollywood audio or video editor how simple it is to fake a reasonable dialogue. We do it for a living, and we’re not even TRYING to create authentic material.

A famous front page after the 2004 U.S. presidential elections bore a picture of George W. Bush and the headline “How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?”

Since we have dumb and dumbererer still running our country that number, apparently, has gone UP.

And I’m including the lazy and self-serving Democrats who care more about saving face than to call a genocide a genocide!

They still don’t know the difference between doing what is right and doing what is easy.

GET THE BALANCE RIGHT ALREADY!

Fake News Story? WOW. Hollywood should just tell the movie makers to stay home. Another fake news/docufakery is in the making for an Oscar. Many it’ll be two years in a row for the US to get the Peace Prize!!

DC | 10/26/2007, 3:03 pm EST

Whine, whine, whine,

Grown up, move out of moms house and get a real job! You guys remind me of the tv comercial for a investment company where a bunch of liberals sit around a table discussing trivia while one of them chokes on a meatball. Then a conservative walks over, pops out the meatball and walks back to his table. His buddies look around at each other like how dare this person do that!

Lets look at the difference between Kitrina and the wildfires, One state had a governer who was incompetent, voted in by democrats, the people looted, raped and killed each other, stole every dollar of aid money sent to them then whine how nothings being done for them. Now look at the wildfires, a very competent Republican governer, not affaird to take action, all the people work together, not one report of looting, and nowhere near as much moey being wasted. And the reason for the fire? Not global warming, not lack of National Guard but an illegal alein setting fires.
As far as lying, I could go on for hours but let me just mention Dan Rather, who lied, fabricated a story to try to steal a presidential election. And Hillery who did not even read the classified security brief given her before voting to send our troops into harms way. And big Al Gore, the biggest lying Hypocrite the world has seen. I’m an Architect and can tell you at least half of his blather is political crap with no basis in truth. But then again the democratic oath is do as I say not as I do.

Ronin | 10/26/2007, 3:20 pm EST

Not surprised by the fake news event. This Administration has a history of deception. It’s the belief that they wouldn’t be caught that is surprising to many.

Bender | 10/26/2007, 4:22 pm EST

DC, that has to be the closest thing to a typical republican response that I have ever heard.
You used every single liberal hate phrase imagineable. Nice work.
Nice spelling also. Kind of takes the wind out of your sails. Rip on illegal aliens when you can’t even spell?? Nobody works harder than the tomato pickers, just remember that.
But, to the gist of what you’re saying: It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Period. No need for real debate. And, by the way, again, what the hell does being an architect have to do with Al Gore informing us about the harm we’re doing to the earth? Are you denying the harm done by our emissions? Doesn’t sound like it.
Gore may be somewhat of a hypocrite in an infantile view, but at least he’s not a modern-day version of Hitler. Keep chugging the ever-tasty republican kool-aid.
By the way: Fire is the only natural disaster we CAN fight. But, I’m sure Arnold appreciates the support……..

DC | 10/26/2007, 5:32 pm EST

Bender, you sure are on one. “modern-day version of Hitler” “By the way: Fire is the only natural disaster we CAN fight”, You got to be kidding. Where were the liberals when Saddam was gasing the Kurds? Chemical weapons are weapons of mass destruction, Rape rooms, cutting off limbs for political reasons. There’s your modern day Hitler. And are you saying we cannot fight drought, plague, flooding etc…? Of coarse we can. We can prevent people from building in the flood plain, we can not move from the East coast to New Mexico and plant a large grass lawn then try to water an un-natural landscape, we can not build wood houses in high fire ares, we can use fire retardent foam to spray on homes during a fire, we can design sprinkler head systems on roof that would keep a house from catching fire. What is harder to fight are the liberals who want to design their homes with zero carbon footprint or low impact active solar voltaics until I explain that the battery storage to make it possible involves lead and nickel, some of the most polluting mining around. Ask Al Gore, he made $$$ off mining his own property. Can’t tell you how many liberals drive around in their electric cars thinking they are getting great milage and saving the planet. If this were so we all would put electric heat back into our houses. When I ask them where they plug their car in, I can only laugh because they are plugging in at their homes that get their elctricity from the local coal burning power plants. We need to be smart, put limits on power plants and go forward based on real knowledge not liberal hysteria.

Let Them Eat Cake | 10/26/2007, 8:30 pm EST

What does the first post have to do with phony FEMA “Press Conference”?

BFOOO – Yet, more apologetics for the Fake News Conference-the neo-cons are so addicted to FOX, they don’t understand how Real News Conferences are supposed to work.

The Facts, Not insiders giving themselves pats on the back and, pronouncing, “Great Job, Brownie”.

This is the only way the Fascist News has been able to continually report on Bush Blunders and do it with a straight face, as if the horrendous decisions these guys are making is “Sane and Correct”.

Since Bushdum, FEMA has been robbed of funding, staffed with inepts and, unable to handle a hang nail problem.

Isn’t it a crime to impersonate the press in a Nationwide Television Fake “Press Conference”.

Guess who the great minds behind this were?

Censorship, not covering five-hundred thousand war protestors in New York/ San Francisco, DC, stocking the media with Bought Conservative Inepts to give us Bush Fascist Fiction is becoming more frightening all the time…

Making false statements about the working of a federal agency?

O’Reilly, Beck, Limbaugh, Matthews, Carlson, Scarborough, and all the other “Non-bias” commentators that lean to the fall Right, are feeding us misinformation and apologetics on a daily basis.

It just gets better and better(meaning lots of sarcasm and Big anxiety in my statement).

Impeachment, now, anyone?

Bender | 10/26/2007, 9:28 pm EST

DC, maybe you should stop and take a breath and realize that you’re probably, at the end, yelling at your own party for refusing evolution in the energy industry. Everything you said about individuals doing their part is true and somewhat feasible. But, the large problem is the burning of coal and oil, which your party refuses to let evolve. Yes, republican senators routinely vote to block renewable subsidization, but yet continue to subsidize oil and coal.
Why? Campaign donations.
So, next time you go blaming the liberals for something, dig a little deeper. The screwed up environment belongs to the republicans. Enjoy it.

WTH | 10/26/2007, 10:00 pm EST

I’m not at all surprised that FEMA would stage a fake press conference. When the DECIDER has a press conference, he has already played the game where you pre-screen the questions you receive. Naturally, this is the same staged press conference mentality, with a different face. In fact, isn’t FOX NEWS a giant form of a staged press conference? Hasn’t the White House already been caught making up news releases, and passing them off as actual news reports by independent news organizations? What surprises me, is that independent news organizations didn’t catch on sooner. Apparently they were given notice that this news conference was to occur, about 15 minutes before it began. That trick was to prevent any news organization from sending any representative, since most of the reporters were busy in the fire zones, or dealing with the other staged news item, which was the phony compassion behind the Presidential visit. I am alarmed, more than anything, with the complacency and ineptitude of the news organizations. Why don’t they investigate the legitimacy of what they put on the air, especially when the White House is at all involved with its production? The tip off, should have been the 15 minutes of warning the news organizations had, to send a representative. Right there, they should have wondered, who was able to show up, with that kind of warning? Sadly, we have become so condistioned to the propaganda machine of the White House, that we don’t even blink when it goes this far over the top. And moreover, the White House is so used to lying and staging phony press releases, that they don’t care either. After all, when the Bush propaganda machine gets caught lying, all they have to do is lie again, and it’s all better. Why? Because Bush has gotten away with so much, without anyone doing anything to punish this farce, that Bush/Cheney feel invincible to anything they do wrong. Someone will take the fall for this, as with the Katrina catastrophe, and then it will be back to business as usual, which means more of the same. The only real option, is to be totally suspicious of anything the Bush White House releases as “public information”. That’s because propaganda in its many forms, is a mainstay of any dictatorship, even dictatorships that occur in the greatest nation on earth.

DirtyDennis | 10/27/2007, 2:57 pm EST

Hey, it turns out it was just an ‘error in judgement.’ No big deal, right? Also, the White House ‘would not condone’ the action and it’s NOT something they would do. Huh?

Delta Wild Man | 10/27/2007, 5:58 pm EST

Why not??
The Democrats do the same thing with their debates..
Oh, By the way,,

sam wonders | 10/28/2007, 11:25 pm EST

i think it’s not a bigger story because people that lost their homes and their lives in the fire are hoping FEMA will do better and don’t want FEMA to have to focus it’s efforts elsewhere (playing defense against a bunch of wannabe blogger-heros). It’s a silly thing to do, but to get out the war drums and start pounding them…that seems a little premature. choir dismissed.

If Off-Topic Comments are being cut out, how come so many posts remain that have Nothing To Do With Said Post?

FEMA GOOD! THE ADMINISTRATION TELLS US IT IS. THE NETWORK NEWS TELLS US FEMA IS GOOD. BUSH IS DOING A GREAT JOB. CHENEY IS A SAINT. OUR “WAR” IS GOING FINE. IRAN IS ALL EVIL AND DESERVES TO BE ATTACKED. THE ADMINISTRATION IS HANDLING EVERYTHING WELL.

Sam, stop “Wondering” – get out of the desert and look at the Neo-Con Block that Controls the news.

Entertainment is filling in for real National News, the majority of Americans, who are fed up with and wanting Bush replaced with the real thing, have not been represented in the news.

FEMA has not been reorganized to meet the needs of the country/emergency situations, funding has disappeared from the safety net agencies and Bushdum has No Oversight-they are empirical regime who must not be challenged or questioned-let the people eat cake.

FEMA IS WORKING WELL, DON’T ‘YA KNOW?

Volunteers are helping California’s fire victims-the resources are limited. Bush has drained the federal help with misappropriation of funding and tax cuts and wars that are fought for business/personal profiteering.

blood for oil of olay | 11/1/2007, 11:52 pm EST

DD-

If nothing else I am a scientist…

The above was a brilliantly-designed experiment aimed at determining the degree to which MCP is capable of defining irrelevancy. Allow me to explain:

Assuming my dick really is a punchbowl, I hardly think this is relevant to the discussion or Tim’s original post in any way. However, if someone, say Jed, were to take the line that I am merely claiming that my dick is a punchbowl in so far as punchbowlness is just a concept invented by humans to name some fundamental aspect of the Universe and therefore cannot truly represent the actual state of being of my dick, then it is tangentially relevant to the FEMA incident which begs the question: what is truly real and what isn’t?

Assuming that MCP is hard at work, we will have to conclude that MCP is indeed a highly sophisticated entity, having arrived at the latter case and subsequently allowing my post to remain posted.

Ole,

I am awe(dumb)struck by your magnificence. (For us simple folks, you’ll have to translate your other post, lest Jed do it for you.)

I bathe in the glow of your brilliance. You are, of course, the exception that proves the rule of DirtyDennis’ Theorem de Cons

Whilst you enjoy your eminence upon high, I should point out to you that I, personally speaking, have never seen a scintilla of evidence that supports the contention that MCP actually gives a whit about relevance. That little ‘alert’ above our ‘portal’ is akin to the Cider House Rules.

But you go ahead on with your bad self. Lord knows it’s better reading than much of the other drivel I’m forced to review in my never-ending diligence in ensuring, “…truth, justice and the American way of life.” ??

Jeugenen | 11/22/2007, 1:20 pm EST

IRAQ WAR FAUCETS

On the pretense of a nuclear threat, President Bush illegally turned on two faucets – full force: out of one flows the American People’s precious wealth, and out of the other faucet flows their priceless blood.

This is a black mark on his name that can never be erased – to damn him forever in history.
