PFSD: Pentagon F*cks-over Soldiers Disorder

10/5/07, 1:28 am EST

Two items today should make all of us call our congressmen.

First is this news from the St. Louis Dispatch, that the Pentagon has been discharging tens of thousands of combat troops on the pretense that the mental health problems they’ve developed after serving in Iraq aren’t PTSD — but rather pre-existing “personality disorders.”

The pre-existing part is the kicker — because it means that the Pentagon, acting like your least favorite HMO, won’t pick up the cost of the medical care of these troops after it discharges them.

“They’ve kicked out about 22,000 troops who they say have pre-existing personality disorders. I don’t believe that,” Missouri Sen. Kit Bond told the newspaper. “And when you kick them out, they don’t get the assistance they need, they aren’t entitled to DOD or Veterans Administration care for those problems.”

Bond and Obama have introduced a bill to attempt to remedy this outrage.

Number two is almost as aggravating:

Turns out the Army is nickel and diming National Guardsmen returning from 22 months in Iraq. More than 1,100 of these troops should be eligible for full educational benefits under the G.I. bill. But the clever bean counters at the Pentagon deployed them for only 729 days… exactly one day short of the 730 days needed to guarantee thousands of dollars a year for college.

This war is tragic enough without our government shortchanging our soldiers. Now if only these real outrages could move our congressmen to take action for our men and women in uniform — rather than serve up ever more bullshit resolutions in response to MoveOn and Rush Limbaugh.

Conservatives dont care about the troops, they remind me a lot of the Nazis in the 1940’s if you have a chance look at the history channel and find their tactics were similar to now, they used support the troops B.S rhetoric and religion to brainwash people plus Hitler’s right hand man said that to keep a society under control you have to keep telling them you’re under attack constantly to get support plust Hitler had the gestapo read about it or watch it on History.com and enemy combatant is nothing new just spell differently Hitler used it too. So sad but true

The sad part is that Rep. think people are so dumb that they will believe these soldiers had mental disorders before joining in, unfortunetly the conservatives would believe anything bush tells them, rep is not a political party is more of like a cult. except the cult tells the truth once in a while while rep. all they do is lie i never heard so much lies in my life grown men being in another dimension of reality

I confess, I never thought I’d support Kit Bond on anything, but apparently he’s the vanguard of a Senate ‘looksee’ on this whole matter. Of course, it IS a no brainer. As such, mewonders how it is this stays so below the radar.

you're not a patriot if... | 10/5/2007, 5:26 pm EST

…you don’t support our troops!

Oh wait. Hmm, guess thats another talking point that can’t be used anymore.

The people that really support our troops are the ones calling for proper body armor, equipment and healthcare for our disabled vets and for our troops to come home from this occupation. Hard to find that kind of money when its all being spent on deceitful contracts for business interests eh?

The government pushed this bogus propaganda statement down our throats, now the ones who swallowed it are going to choke.

DD,
I agree. If they are good enough to enlist, then they are good enough to be taken care after they have served. This is a sad sad story and I hope it’s not true.

Dirty Dennis, youre right why take em if they had personality disorders? The number of people who volunteered should have meant they wouldnt have to take the mentaly ill. Letting people go the day before they quailfy for sevices is cruel. Bush says support the troops then he hangs em out to dry.

Uncle Mac,

I haven’t seen many complaints of ‘axing’ (not that that means anything) but how can you tell if things are better if you don’t test the water? THIS should be a subject you’d like to wade in on (sorry about that).

DirtyDennis | 10/5/2007, 6:39 am EST

The Army can’t have it both ways. If those guys had ‘disorders’ BEFORE, then why in the hell did they accept them? The act of acceptance assumes responsibility.
