I’m not quite sure why there was ever an expectation that the architect of the Surge could provide the country with a dispassionate evaluation of its efficacy. Score one to the Bush PR machine that perfumed Petraeus’ report with an air of sainted neutrality.

What we heard today was exactly what you’d expect of an Army man for whom failure is not an option and willing to commit to the completing the impossible … given the proper time frame. Petraeus didn’t appear to sugar coat the difficulties in Iraq, although he did everything in his power to highlight the tenuous gains the surge appears to have produced.
Petraeus and the surge remind me of a militarized variant of the little Dutch boy and his dike. The general has orders to plug all the holes he can, and can dutifully report he’s working with all ten fingers and all ten toes. Water may have ceased to come streaming out of the fissures that the surge is plugging. Viewed up close, the earth around those fingers and toes may even appear to be drying up.
But take a step back — and the structural integrity of that dike is clearly failing. It’s going to collapse eventually. The only question is: Is the U.S. military going to be in its path when it does? When Iraq fragments into bloody chaos.
Bush’s orders are to hold the line. Keep plugging that failing dike.
And like a good soldier, Petraeus has said, “Sir. Yes. Sir.”
