Feeling Sorry for Senator Craig

8/30/07, 2:03 pm EST

It’s easy to enjoy Larry Craig’s fall from grace — the tawdry foot tapping, the naked hypocrisy — but there’s some part of me that feels deeply sorry for this lonely conflicted man, an effective Senator at the pinnacle of Idahoan power, whose inability to be honest with himself led him into anonymous temptation in public restrooms.

The writing on the bathroom wall seems to say that Craig’s political career is over. To me, that’s a shame. Why does his kinky sexual behavior have anything to do with his Senatorial decision making?

And it seems shameful to me too that so many progressive blogs are gleefully whipping up the right’s homophobia to help topple Craig. Aren’t you the same people who thought it ridiculous that people called on Bill Clinton to resign over his oral sexcapades in the Oval Office. Yes it’s grosser, I suppose, that Craig liked to get off in the men’s room. But is locale that important?

Here’s hoping Craig sticks this out, and gets some much needed therapy.

He’s Baaaaack!!

Regardless of the facts of this case - and I agree, the evidence looks pretty flimsy - it strikes me that Craig has shown really poor judgement/decision making skills from the start of this escapade. Not consulting an attorney before pleading guilty? Hello!? Thinking the case would somehow not be made public? This is a US Senator - and he really didn’t know that arrest records - and certainly, convictions - are public record? He’s a SENATOR, and he thought no one would _check_ his record? And then, his frantic, erratic behavior since the story became public has been, at best, embarrassing. I sure hope he showed better judgement while in office.

Thanks for voicing this. I get looked at like I’m crazy when I say Craig just needs a hug and to be told everything is going to be okay.

Mitch McConnell “Larry m’boy, in recognition of all the wonderful work you’ve been doing for family values, a few of your Senate colleagues want to host you at a fund raiser.”

Larry Craig “Wow, Mitch, that’s great. When and where.”

MM “Now. We’re reserved a place. Let’s go outside and wait for the bus to take us there.”

LC “Bus. Don’t we usually travel by limo?”

MM “The guys wanted to charter a bus so we could all go together. Builds up camaraderie and trust. You know.”

LC “Sure thing Mitch. Good idea.”

MM “Here comes the bus now. You stand right here Larry.”

LC “Sure Mitch. Boy, the bus sure is going fast. But I can see all the guys. Wow, isn’t that John McCain driving? Mitch, it’s not slowing down. Mitch.”

Nicely done Mac.

Merkwurdigliebe | 8/31/2007, 8:23 pm EST

my point was that we dont know all of the facts, and since neither i, or presumably you, were there, we’ll probably never know

all i’m saying is that this case smells of entrapment

Sixinonehand | 8/31/2007, 7:10 pm EST

Merk. One question. By your rationale, his ‘guilty’ plea doesn’t mean anything? He’s still innocent until proven? Isn’t that why he pleaded guilty? The reason he pleaded guilty WAS NOT because of some cop corruption. The cops may have gotten lucky, and snagged a big one, but I guarrantee you, most of the people they end up interviewing and getting a statement from, are some serious no-name low-lifes. For anybody to say this is some how ‘left’ leaning is missing the point.
Plus, who, in their right mind, picks up ANYTHING ON THE BATHROOM FLOOR OF AN AIRPORT?????????????

Senatorial Duties | 8/31/2007, 1:16 pm EST

Hypocrisy shouldn’t be an issue. Senators should vote on issues based on the needs / wants of his constituency, not his personal preferences. It isn’t necessary for him to conform his personal life to his professional obligations to be effective.

Jed Clampett | 8/31/2007, 12:52 pm EST

agree… to some extent. Officer should have made a clearer case. A good lawyer would have had the charges dismissed before it even went to trial on such flimsy ‘evidence’. In the end, without better evidence, perhaps audio or video tape of the incident it is merely the officers interpretation of events against the senator’s representation of his intent. The policeman, intent on making a name for himself, will do whatever is necessary to collar the individual and since he is an officer, his word is worth 100 times greater than anyone else… absent any real evidence.
To that effect, uniformed officers should be like the police in england who have police cameras in all cars linked directly to central and no control over it’s recording. I’d go further yet, place cameras on their person, perhaps on the badge or belt buckle. And so the evidence would be partial, allow the general public to carry video and audio recording devices that capture the event and helps them prove their innocence.

Shocked | 8/31/2007, 12:28 pm EST

I was shocked to hear the story at first and assumed the man guilty. However, after hearing the audio I agree with some that it helps his case. He accuses the cop of entrapment, which based on the facts seems to have credibility. In public restrooms I often spread my legs so my pants won’t hit the floor and soak up the piss.

The whole thing about the cop insisting he saw his left hand when it was on the other side of the stall seems to bolster the senator’s case also. Why go into contortions to show your left hand when it would be much simpler to lower your right? I’d bet that if someone went to the police reports this cop wrote about others he charged with the same crime they’d be virtually identical, right down to the ring issue.

Lastly, can you imagine the media circus if the guy did plead not guilty and went to trial? It would have been the O.J. and Scott Peterson trials rolled into one!!!
He was in a no win situation, hope it flys under the radar was his best option in my opinion. BTW, I hate f*%@ing conservatives as much as the next person.

The Pig In Zen | 8/31/2007, 11:18 am EST

But Bill Clinton never stood up against getting blown by fat girls. That’s why this is effective. I thought you would have figured that out, Tim.

Michael Liermann | 8/31/2007, 8:58 am EST

Correction to last comment: that last sentence should read “…or get the hell off your soapbox”.

ray | 8/30/2007, 10:18 pm EST

Good post, Harold. After hearing the tape i was mad at the attitode and type of questioning by the police. it should be up to the people of Idaho weither craig stays or goes. I cant help but think the tape helps him.

not because, but in spite of | 8/30/2007, 7:44 pm EST

I despise this guy for his voting record. Not his sexual interests.

I could care less about consensual homosexual solicitation. It harms no one and so it isn’t morally wrong. Although I suppose it might have been annoying for the other stall occupant if they weren’t also seeking some sort of sexual activity. Still, hardly something to arrest someone for. The other occupant could have just said to quit it and the senator would have then known that the feelings werent mutual.

Whats wrong is the way he has voted. Like so many others who love meddling with others affairs, and telling other people how to live their lives, he helps continue to sustain this immoral government oppression of peoples lives.

So, in summary, I’ve hated everything this guy stands for long before he got arrested for doing something completely harmless.

idaho ramsey | 8/30/2007, 6:53 pm EST

He’s a big business, anti-environment republican prick. Boo Hoo.

Hallzee | 8/30/2007, 5:51 pm EST

Yeah, Just what Tim said.

Bret | 8/30/2007, 5:45 pm EST

Tim,
It’s about character.

frog | 8/30/2007, 5:35 pm EST

Harold, by the accounts I’ve heard, he plead guilty about two months after the arrest. People don’t plead guilty the day they are arrested. They have to enter a plea in front of a judge on their day in court.

DirtyDennis | 8/30/2007, 5:26 pm EST

Kudos to Timothy and Harold. I don’t know any vice cops, only know a few cops, have seen a LOT of cop movies and know a LOT of people. I’ll stand on the latter: I have a strong suspicion that a vice cop, in a bathroom stall in an airport, trying to ‘catch’ a prevert (sic) might, subconsciously of course, lean a teensy bit towards entrapment, hard as that might be to believe.

There are only two people who know what took place and neither of them can be expected to demonstrate much objectivity. Those NOT involved should watch QUIETLY, limiting their comments to expressions of hope for fairness.

I haven’t heard ‘the tape,’ but it’s really not important. He copped, I believe, to disturbing the peace. End of story.

I think everyone knows I like slapping Cons around. But NOT for this. I want to slap them around for Iraq, Katrina, budget deficit, trade deficit, subversion of civil rights, you know the drill. NOT for an indiscretion.

when will the christian right understand that republicans do not have their interests in mind, only their own greed and hypocracy

freak | 8/30/2007, 3:18 pm EST

This whole thing has put a new twist on Sen. Craig’s quote about slapping Bill Clinton on the wrist and calling him a “nasty boy.”
