“The Ethanol Scam” (from RS 1032), our story on the political boondoggle behind the corn-based fuel, is generating a heated response, both in Washington and on the Web. For a sample of the debate — and a point-by-point response from contributing editor Jeff Godell to his detractors in the corn lobby — click here.

once again, big government decided to do something on the political cheap

the solution to our fuel problems is going to take at least a decade to fix (Brazil has been working toward total ethanol since the oil crisis in 73 and are now only at 70% ethanol), and the nazi’s had something when they successfully created synthetic fuel in the 40’s…if they could do it then, during wartime, why cant we?

greed gets in the way. greed doesn’t see possibilities in the future or new technologies. It only understands the here and now and the things that make them more powerful(rich).
Unwilling to jeopardize their cash cow, they will not even allow greater efficiency, something that with our computer controlled systems in our cars would not be so difficult.

Why aren’t we injecting pure oxygen into the pistons to achieve a greater degree of combustion and therefore less pollution?
Why don’t we have a ‘Brown’s gas’ generator on board to inject hydrogen and oxygen to aid combustion?
Why don’t we have carbon capture devices on our tailpipes to reduce emmissions?
Is an extra $150 per vehicle not worth the health of our homeworld?
They already know that if they vaporize the fuel and mix it with oxygen before injecting into the piston they can improve milage and efficiency by a factor of about 10, but it won’t be done anytime soon because it would jeopardize their bottom line.

Seems to me the more dangerous terrorists are these guys that impede progress and suppress technologies that can help our world.

Perhaps we are waging the wrong war.

It’s just another bullshit cartel. Check the import agreement we signed with Brazil.
Bring back the EV1 Dammit!

Both sides are really working hard to lie their way into peoples wallets. If only I could decide where my taxes went instead of the corrupt politician in bed with his buddies and their lobbying team on whichever side of the fence they play. Hurray for government mandated robbery.

Great Article! Now I read this morning that milk could reach $5.00 a gallon by the end of the year because of the increase in the cost of corn to feed dairy cows. Which means the cost of all Dairy products will increase. Don’t mess with my Ben & Jerry’s addiction.

Now the Dems can investigate the Dairy industry and tax their record profits

Hydrogen fuel cells baby! Calling it.

By the way Jed, I take it you don’t work for money, right? Corporations sell what is profitable and meets the needs of consumers. They aren’t going to push something that consumers won’t buy. That is business. That is economics. They are not evil because they try to make money. When it becomes profitable to be more energy efficient, business will jump on board. The reason we don’t make the shift is because consumers are largely unwilling to make the shift. They prefer the way things are so companies aren’t going to change. It’s terrible that we (as citizens of Earth) aren’t willing to do more to limit our impact, but it’s not the corporations/Republicans/Bush’ s fault; it’s people. If you really want to make the shift to being more energy efficient as a society you have to stop blaming other people/groups for the world’s problems. All that does is put the accused in defense mode and then nothing gets accomplished. To make “the shift”, we have to be a collective, united, unilateral force in advocating change. With that said, YOU are part of the problem.

Also, please take a chemistry class (after attending an economic class of course) so you can stop saying some of the voodoo bullshit you claim we should be doing.

Careful Kid. You wouldn’t want to talk about the tobacco companies and how they, and the Cons, worked to keep anything ‘negative’ about nicotine quiet. How they lied and spent millions covering the truth and propagandizing, one of your favorite word. You wouldn’t want to talk about that now, would you.

And yes, in the final analysis, to smoke or no is an individual decision. But your blanket defense of corporations and the GOP is, at best, naïve, in the middle, your ground, disingenuous, and, from my point of view, lying.

Should we also talk about the military industrial complex ‘corporations’ and how the ‘people’ are the ones to blame? The Right loves to blame ‘the people’ all the time. That’s okay, as long as they take some of the blame as well.
