YouTubed

If you missed the YouTube debate you missed out. I was worried this was going to be dumb or cheesy or dumb and cheesy. Instead it was quirky, heartfelt, entertaining, tough and substantive. By far the best debate of the season.

UPDATE: Check out the complete highlight reel at Veracifier.

Hillary Clinton kicked a whole lot of ass. She was polished. Poised. Presidential. She really does have a presence and a power on stage. She looks every bit the frontrunner. I only wish Gravel had put her on the spot about her bundlers and her Wall Street money. Obama took most of the real heat in this debate, and I think did a nice bit of political judo to keep from absorbing a direct blow. It’d be nice to see someone challenge Clinton directly, rather than nibble around the edges about her triangulation (Edwards) or her lack of a specific health care plan (Obama). My guess is she’d acquit herself ably — but that’s only a guess.

Clinton certainly inflicted some damage, pouncing on Obama’s over-eager agreement to a YouTuber’s challenge to meet face to face with Kim Jong Il, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez etc., offering a more serious answer about using high level envoys to ensure that she were not participating in a “propaganda” effort by our enemies. It made Obama look callow, and reinforced her talking point of the evening about being the best candidate to “hit the ground running” in November January 2009.

Clinton must be loving the huge group. Her top competitors had some nice moments last night. Edwards talking about the Virginian who lived with a cleft palate for 50 years. Obama alfa dogging Gravel. Biden and Richardson showed they had game too. But there’s so much competition for airtime that it’s impossible to get any momentum and have a truly breakout night.

The gay marriage questions were outrageously disappointing. Folks: separate but equal institutions are against every moral fiber your party is supposed to stand for. If he weren’t so smug about his stance, I’d be giving Dennis Kucinich some mad props right now.

The candidate videos were a fun addition. John Edwards’ campaign’s Hair video hit it out of the park. One question: Where was this six weeks ago?

One last thought. Clinton/Obama/Edwards/Biden/Richardson. The Democrats have five candidates on that stage who would be a stronger nominee than John Kerry was. Even the inhumanly senatorial Chris Dodd would have given Kerry a run for the money.

What did you think of the format and the substance?

i liked the format, i agree that it was the best debate this year. i agreed with Obama on meeting the other leaders. i thought he won the debate. None of these candidates are as good as Kerry he had a better plan for America.

I never could get myself to care about debates especially when most of what the candidates said was either not relevent, not true, or just stupid generalized babble.

I looked to voting record, legislation proposed and all that stuff that, you know, the stuff that actually shows you what a candidate is like. The old saying that actions will betray any lie is a good one to heed when listening to these debates.

With that in mind, it is fun to see who is the best liar on stage. Typically, the best liar is also the most successful debater but not always. With so little air time to fully flesh out any meaningful stances on anything, its hard to tell sometimes. The best liar is one who commits to as little as possible in the fact department.

As far as debates go, this one did indeed have some substance, but even a twinky will seem like a feast to a starving man.

BK
I TALKED TO AL GORE A FEW DAYS AGO, SAID HE WAS NOT GOING TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT AGAIN..
SORRY..

BUT I DID ASK HIM ABOUT “IMPEACHMENT”.
AL GORE SAID, AND I QUOTE..
” I SHORE DO LOVE EM-PEACHES, I’LL EAT ME A WHOLE MESS OF EM-PEACHES, IF I GET THE CHANCE.
I LIKE EM-PEACHES WHAT GROWS IN TENNESSEE, BUT ALABAMA HAS GOT GOOD-UNS TOO.
GOT TO BE CAREFUL EATING EM-PEACHES, EAT TO MANY OF EM, THEY’LL MAKE YOU SICK.”

I’M STILL SCRATCHING MY HEAD OVER THAT COMMENT..

C Co... aka I Smell Propaganda | 7/24/2007, 5:53 pm EST

So basically nothing has really changed. Hill Dog is still a very savvy, politically correct figure (albeit someone that doesn’t deserve the Presidency), Obama has a lot of skill and a good heart, but lacks a tremendous amount of experience, and Edwards is the fakest douche on the planet. Interesting format, though it seemed more like a calculated attempt to look hip with the younger crowd. However, I like Anderson Cooper (I really don’t know why; maybe because he has two last names) despite all the flack he takes for being quite rich and good looking for a journalist. Ultimately I don’t see much changing in the next year and a half. It’s probably gonna be Clinton/Edwards ticket (groan), while I’d much rather see some combination of Obama and Richardson. Maybe the nation will wise up down the road…

I hate these lying politicians. Substance? Please. In the power game it is just a game of musical chairs for the white house between two sides that have superfluous differences. Looking for real change? Don’t bother looking at either of the mainstream parties. Most of them are on very short leashes all held by the same handlers. Some just roll over a bit more and like obeying.

Oh Tim…

“reinforced her talking point of the evening about being the best candidate to “hit the ground running” in November 2009″???

Do you really think the US military will throw Bu$h out of office only 10 months after his term expires in JANUARY 2009?

jeffery mcnary | 7/25/2007, 2:58 pm EST

what is exactly is “presidential”? was jfk like grant? was roosevelt like taft? perhaps fewer press credentials will provide better thought presentation.

Jed Clampett | 7/25/2007, 11:28 pm EST

you know, presidential, smart, intelligent, eloquent, able to finish a sentence without stammering, positing a plan that makes some sence rather than immediately raising eyebrows for it’s absurdity.
Think of it like the opposite of the current resident of the White House who happens to be sophomoric or perhaps more like a party animal frat boy that pays someone to pass his classes for him. would that be fraternal? perhaps, not quite.

jeffery mcnary | 7/26/2007, 10:47 am EST

jed, you’re right!! the opposite of the current resident will work just fine!!

WHEN IT ALL BOILS DOWN,, REGARDING POLITICS,,

IN THE VERY END,,,

WHO THE HELL CARES??

DELTAWILDMAN | 7/27/2007, 12:34 am EST

I’VE YET TO SEE THE WORDS ” HE/SHE WAS A GOOD AMERICAN DEMOCRAT/REPUBLCAN,” ON A TOMB STONE…
I’VE YET TO FEEL GUILTY ABOUT PEEING ON THE GRAVE OF A POLITICAL RIVAL..

I’VE YET TO SEE A OLD PERSON WHO LIVED ANY LONGER BECAUSE OF THE POLITICAL PARTY THEY WERE A MEMBER OF…

DELTAWILDMAN | 7/27/2007, 12:36 am EST

POLITICS IS JUST ANOTHER WAY OF BLAMING A “FART” ON SOMEONE ELSE, IN A POLITE WAY, MIND YOU!!

Talapus Pete | 7/27/2007, 10:59 am EST

I think there were more important things for them to be doing—like working full-time not as candidates but to change this country’s policies.

Word | 7/27/2007, 10:37 pm EST

Hey deltawildman.

It’d be funny if we just let you drown after some hurricane you never thought of comes and destroys your precious little children.

I’d laugh at it on CNN.

Cons are expendable.

Word | 7/29/2007, 3:32 am EST

Deltawildman,

Well I guess you have the big bad government to thank for those 72 hours of notice you were talking about. For me to watch you drown I’d have to abolish that big bad government. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Jed Clampett | 7/30/2007, 4:25 pm EST

a weeks worth of warning won’t make a bit of difference if you can’t afford to even buy a bus ticket to the evacuation points. Which would describe the majority of the peoples who were affected. The fact that only a few thousand died (3? if government releases are even to be believed) is miraculous. Why cargo trains were not used given the number of railroad tracks crisscrossing the city is just a matter of shortsightedness of the leadership of the city. But to take those people, with the limited means at their disposal, as far away as possible is evidence of the governments intent of removing the ‘poor’ element from NO in such a way that they would loose any claim to their property by being unable to even cover the property tax for a couple of years. Then, easy pickings for developers to come in and buy those properties at auction for cents on the dollar. See, the rich aren’t so stupid, they can think up all kinds of ways to cheat their fellow man and don’t even need to break a law, merely use it to their advantage, can you now see the value of those investments they make in order to own the lawmakers… it becomes much easier to get away with a crime.

Could the California electric companies have been able to blame the energy crisis on Davies and depose the long standing democrat if Cheney hadn’t suppressed the Federal Regulatory Commission’s report that showed that the electric companies had caused a fake energy crisis to increase profits? Very unlikely.
Did anyone notice that all those companies were fined millions of dollars for perpetrating that ‘energy crisis’? Not likely, it didn’t receive any publicity or national coverage.
How many of the general public got refunds on their thousands of dollars extra pulled out of their pockets by nefarious means, probably a few of the wealthy and well connected, definately not the grandma on a fixed income. How many people died because of the heat and because they couldn’t afford to turn on the AC? Did those companies and their CEO’s and high officials take responsability for those deaths? Not likely.
In all likelyhood, those companies signed an agreement that allowed them to pay a ridiculously low fine compared to what they profited, allowed them to avoid accepting responsability by not having to admit wrongdoing and now continue to do business as usual with the same leadership structure.
See, crime does pay, you just have to have the right organization to do it in.
If you are in cahouts with the government, anything is legal, if not, arrangements can be made. BUY A CONGRESSMEMBER TODAY, THE RETURNS ARE ASTRONOMICAL!!! plus they are cheap.

Let Them Eat Cake | 8/9/2007, 1:53 am EST

Another debate(AFL-CIO) yesterday and, the questions given to Hillary were too easy and Obama and Edwards got grilled.

Olbermann was O.K. but Chris Matthews is such a little cheer-leader and lap-dog for the GOP, he practically did cartwheels trying to Convince his television audience that Hillare “Won” but the audience did not support his Lame Claims…

He is the most over-rated political “host” who is so Partisan, he is the Republican water-carrier and the Bought Media, want those Republicans in office forever(Immoral Wars, Tax-Cuts that Kill(people and the infra-structure)and, privatization that destroys our economy and health care system, education system).

YouTube debates were great and so was the AFL-CIO one and Obama and Edwards did great…Clinton-Not so Great…

She has become a Corporate Junkie and I’ll go for the two that are trying to stay away from the Murdochs and Exxons and Pharmaceutical backing…(Lawyers are O.K. by me)…CEOS are Not…

Biden and Dodd seem to be on the Hillary gravy-train and don’t like ‘em…

DirtyDennis | 8/9/2007, 7:48 pm EST

Cake,

I admire that you can watch those things. Couldn’t watch JFK/RMH and haven’t been able to watch any since. Certainly I can’t stomach them on this level. I should but will wait and listen to the comments you guys have. I have more confidence in you than I do with the media.

I honestly don’t think the debates do much unless someone sticks their foot in their mouth. The reality is, that’s often the difference between the winners and losers. At least it seems to be the case. Ford and Bush I are too classic examples. And I guess Dukakis, for that matter.

That prompted me to think back on some of the remarkable ‘choices’ the dems have offered up the past fifty years. All in all, I’d have to say that it ‘appears’ that we actually have choices this go-around.
