RuPaul McRompson

7/11/07, 1:02 pm EST

Let me get this straight:

Rudy’s top advisers are into coke, hookers, race baiting and flattening Persia.

John McCain has less money than Ron Paul and just fired (as in axed) his campaign’s top guns, leaving him essentially dead in the water.

Fred Thompson, the supposed Christianist savior, was by all indications a lobbyist for an abortion group in the ’90s, and a mole for Nixon during Watergate.

And Mitt Romney has become such a poster child for inconstancy, that he gets ribbed for it on SportsCenter.

I just don’t see it: How does any of these jokers get nominated?

My money’s on Mitt right now. Especially now that McCain’s search-and-destroy oppo-research master Terry Nelson has left the building.

Am I wrong?

What's the Wha? | 7/11/2007, 2:26 pm EST

I totally think its Romney…with all his issues, at least he pretends to be a Republican, in the post-Bush sense.

As an Arizonan, I was kinda excited about Goldwater-lovin’ McCain…but he’s run an abysmal campaign and, sad to say, his time to save the GOP from itself is long past…

I totally think its Romney…he’s the only one who even pretends to be the sort of post-Bush Republican that the base can get behind…even if he is a total d-bag.

As an Arizonan, its been hard watching McCain’s downfall…once upon a time, I thought he might be able to bring a Goldwater-ian sorta sanity to the GOP. But he’s run an abysmal campaign and his time seems long past…

Tim concludes by asking if he’s wrong? Perhaps not wrong, just guilty of low rent yellow journalism – unfounded allegations repeated ad nauseum, proclaiming guilt by association, and bi-weekly smear pieces that won’t change a single reader’s vote, for OR against.

You alternately dismiss Romney’s candidacy and then predict Romney’s victory. He leads in a few small states … period. Let it go.

Where’s an article about the lockstep clowns on the other side of the aisle? Although, why bother, since Clinton is a total lock to win. Edwards can’t raise money because no one LIKES him, Obama CAN raise money and is very likeable but trails badly despite endless media reports of some gigantic Obama groundswell.

I’m waiting for a Rolling Stone article outlining the predictable Third Party revolt from the Sheehan/Daily Kos Far Left that will emerge 3 seconds after Clinton wins the Dem nomination next February.

Instead of preaching to a long ago converted choir, who’d never vote for Guiliani or Thompson anyway, you might want to quell the anti-Clinton far lefties that could derail the 2008 “Restoration”.

If the Dem Convention looks anything like Chicago in ‘68, it’ll guarantee 4-8 more years of Republican rule.

Voter anger/frustration at Bush and most Republicans doesn’t necessarily translate into independents deciding to vote for Democrats. I’m STILL waiting for a reason other than “We REALLY Hate Bush, Cheney and the Iraq War”.

All 3 may be gone by 2009, THEN what?

Chas | 7/11/2007, 3:13 pm EST

Romney leads in a few small states … period. Giuliani will win Florida, NY and California primaries.

Giuliani’s “flaws” will be overlooked by more Republicans (and Independents) than Hilary’s flaws will be by most rabid anti war Dems.

Rudy or Hilary, that’s the 2008 choice, despite the media’s desperate attempts to create horse races in either party.

I realize it’s difficult to write 2-3 new, original posts weekly about John Edwards’ alleged electability (Can’t blame ya there, who else IS there to write about? Biden?, Dodd??? or Gravel?????), repeating the same Thompson smears or perhaps yet another bit about how crowds love Obama (big deal, they love NASCAR, too) but there has to be someone at RS who can pull this blog from life support.

C U in Hell | 7/11/2007, 3:17 pm EST

Under weird circumstances that I won’t go into here, I ended up having a few beers with a GOP campaign strategist last week. He said the general consensus among his colleagues is that they face an uphill battle in ‘08 no matter what, but that Fred Thompson is probably their best candidate. The reason, he said — and he literally told me this — is that out of all the Republican presidential candidates, Fred Thompson is the one the American public knows the least about (despite his mild celebrity status). He told me that if he were one of Thompson’s advisers, he would try to keep Thompson from entering the race for as long as practicable, letting the other candidates sink their own campaigns a la John McCain. Additionally, he said that despite Thompson’s reputation as the Great White Hope of the Christian Right, his record in Congress is actually moderate enough for him to distance himself from Bush and therefore be able to play to both the extremist and the moderate elements of the party.

Interestingly, he also said that the one Democrat that Republicans are scared shitless of is Al Gore. He said they might be able to beat Hillary because of the visceral reaction so many Americans have against her, and they could probably beat Obama because, well, he’s black. (He went into a fairly elaborate explanation of the kinds of tactics that would likely be employed to stir up racist sentiment in the South in the event of an Obama candidacy — for example, using code words like “welfare” to push people’s buttons without being overtly racist.) Gore, he said, would be virtually unbeatable, however, for a whole slew of reasons — not the least of which is the fact that he actually won the popular vote in 2000.

Paul is different | 7/11/2007, 3:30 pm EST

Ron Paul is much different a person and candidate than Giuliani, Romney, McCain or Thompson. Do some googling and you’ll see that for yourself.

How did such low-quality writing get into Rolling Stone, btw?

Mythic Mystic | 7/11/2007, 3:41 pm EST

Write about Dr. Ron Paul! There is a person that is turning Democrats into Republicans JUST TO VOTE FOR HIM!! This is THE guy that we need NOW. After the Bushes and Clintons, and Bushes, do we need another Clinton? All of the ‘Top’ guys (gal) running will only continue us into the downward spiral that has become American policy for the past 50-60 years. Everyone knows something smells bad in D.C. that is why we need REAL change and not just lip service this time. Research and Vote RON PAUL in ‘08. You WILL NOT be disapointed.

DAVID | 7/11/2007, 3:43 pm EST

Tim… NOBODY nominated these guys.

They all just raised some money by selling their souls to the devil.

One by one they’ll fall by the wayside and a “real” person will step up.

Where are all the Eisenhower Repubs? He was the last Repub that had any sense or morals.

Harry Truman was the last Dem with any brains, too. Can’t help but wonder what happened to that little sign he used to keep in the oval office on his desk: “The buck stops here.”

This current round of village idiots could use that sign.

Andy | 7/11/2007, 3:48 pm EST

There is only Rep. that can torpedo the Obama or Hiliary and that is Ron Paul. If the GOP offer up any other candidate they will be basically conceding defeat – maybe that is their plan.

Patrick Glover | 7/11/2007, 3:50 pm EST

Ron Paul is the best candidate the Republicans have to offer period… end of story.

Its Ron Paul | 7/11/2007, 4:06 pm EST

Romney, lawl.

Maybe if he is a good Mormon he will get his own planet. A planet in which he can more than double the size of Guantanamo to whatever he wants AND win the Presidency. Otherwise I imagine he’ll be pooping in his Mormon Underwear if he wins a primary.

Chris S | 7/11/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Ron Paul

James D. | 7/11/2007, 4:59 pm EST

The choice is simple. Vote for a man of principle or vote for another lying dictator to take you into another unjust war.

Let’s face it. You have only one rational choice: Ron Paul.

Anonymous | 7/11/2007, 5:00 pm EST

The south wont vote for a mormon. Rudy could carry the south and get more eastern states and keep the traditonal GOP states. A Romnney nomination would be great for Democrats.

ray | 7/11/2007, 5:05 pm EST

A Nomination of Romney would be the best thing for the Democeats, the south wont vote for a mormon. Romney would also loose some other traditional GOP states.

guess im not alone | 7/11/2007, 5:10 pm EST

Although I’ve always favored libertarianism, until now most of the candidates under that banner didn’t really advocate what they claimed to. Dr. Paul is the first libertarian presidential candidate I’ve seen worth voting for.

After researching his voting record and reading some of the literature he advocates, I have no doubt about who to vote for.

So many in power seem terrified of what he represents, its no wonder the media is trying to hide his success. He does away with all the partisan bull that has been set up to get us picking one or the other side of the same coin and addresses the heart of the matter: The will of the people vs the control of our government.

ray | 7/11/2007, 5:12 pm EST

The nomination of Romney would be great for the Democrats. Romney would have a hard time in the south and could loose other Gop states.

Richard Turner | 7/11/2007, 5:35 pm EST

Anyone who would vote for anyone other than Ron Paul is not very well read, or they have a vested interest in the further decline of the greatest country to have ever existed.

Paul | 7/11/2007, 5:39 pm EST

Romney’s a used car salesman, and everyone sees right through him. Another interesting bit of news, and you can google it, Romney would have less money than Ron Paul if he hadn’t loaned his campaign $9 mill of his own personal money. Giuiliani creeps to many people out; he’s as dirty as they come. McCain’s in the tank. The only man that can do it for the Reps, and he also makes all the Dems look like the silly children they are, is Ron Paul.

Dallas | 7/11/2007, 5:52 pm EST

I’m pretty sure the writer is a democrat who doesn’t want people to know about Ron Paul so they don’t defect to the other side, like many of them did and will.

seriously | 7/11/2007, 6:48 pm EST

you only mention ron paul to say that he has more money than mccain, but fail to point out that he doesn’t have any of the skeletons the other candidates have.

ron paul is the smartest and best candidate on either side of the aisle… period. i just wish you would take the time to point out that he’s a man who has always practices what he preaches and there is no candidate more principled.

Jackson Knight | 7/11/2007, 7:06 pm EST

The Ron Paul Revolution is the only Hope for America. Wake up…or pay later, when things go to hell in a handbasket.

AnnCoulterneedsamouthfulofcum! | 7/11/2007, 7:26 pm EST

Giuliani and Paul can’t get elected because they aren’t good “culture warriors”, Romney MIGHT be able to get elected but it will take a lot of convincing to get the “Left Behind” crowd to trust a mormon (I believe I heard one of the religius right describe voting for him while “holding their nose”). McCain is dead in the water because he is seen as one of those desperate guys who runs every year at this point and many on the base doesn’t like him because he actually believes in working with the other side.

Thompson will likely jump in at the last minute and immediatly jump to the top. That doesn’t mena he will automatically win, his ho hum voting record and experience will be an issue. I believe the nomination will run down to Romney or Thompson.

C U in hell:

Thnks for sharing with us the republicna game plan, however I seriously doubt that Gore will run (which is a shame, really) .

AC Green | 7/11/2007, 9:43 pm EST

I think the McCain “riches to rags” story says a lot about what Americans want and don’t want. When he was the straight talker, people could identify with him. But when he started wavering (embracing the religious right whom he had denounced previously, weak stance on immigration, etc.), people quickly cast him aside. I really wanted him to be the man, but it’s clear he’s not. I can’t figure out why Tim Dickinson feels that Romney is the one to beat – wishy-washy is what sunk Kerry, and Romney is 10x more of a flip-flopper than Kerry. As others have noted, the Republican party doesn’t stand a chance in h@ll against Democrats. Do the math – the president has a 30% approval rating, and you’re basically going to follow his policies? And Ron Paul offers the one chance at victory and the party leaders are trying to sweep him under the rug? Not smart.

BibbityBobbityBoo | 7/11/2007, 9:46 pm EST

If Ron Paul miraculously wins the Republican nomination. He would be unbeatable. Obama is great but the weed, the cocaine, and the membership to the CFR will hurt him. Hillary is Hillary. With her history, husband and voting record it would be a Ron Paul landslide. Nobody wants another crook in the Whitehouse anytime soon.

Drew | 7/11/2007, 10:50 pm EST

Count me as another one for Ron Paul…for all the reasons listed above.

Jonh q | 7/11/2007, 11:00 pm EST

Ron Paul….

The rest of the field on BOTH sides
SUCK ON ICE!!!!!

Brewskie | 7/12/2007, 12:09 am EST

Don’t support Mitt dude. He’s such a flip flopper you’d never know whether he’d flip again once in office, and I’d wager that he would. Don’t go the way most people when electing these guys. Go with someone that has a proven track record for holding his principles. No other candidate but one can make the claim of being totally consistent. I’ll let you find out how that ONE candidate is.

Jed Clampett | 7/12/2007, 12:32 am EST

Mitt is not a flip-flopper, he’s a panderer, he’ll tell the public what they want to hear and once in office will do the same thing Bush and most other presidents have done… follow their own agenda to help their major contributors and screw the common people.

Ron Paul has some interesting ideas as well as a lunatic fringe that will definately keep him out of the White House, but he might make enough waves and raise good issues to make the race about more than just sound bites and clap lines.

Rudy, nice picture of him by the way tim, would probably do better if he was to keep the dress on and run again Hillary for the first ‘woman’ president. God help us all if that power-mad nut job actually wins.

Fred is definately the Republicans best hope, he’s greedy, has no moral standards and is well trained to deceive people. All qualities admired by the republican public. If he could just get more religiosity and start learning how to ridicule his opponents with high schoolish taunts and he’ll be the perfect republican candidate.

The others?… the only reason they are even in the race is to give their ‘contributors’ an opportunity to drop some cash into their campaign coffers to justify their votes in congress. Did you know that once they retire they get to keep whatever is left in their campaign funds?

dickjd | 7/12/2007, 12:57 am EST

Even if Ron Paul did win, he would either be assasinated or get no cooperation from congress and judiciary, not to mention the main stream media. I doubt he will win because he doesnt play ball with the republicrat machine who only wants to keep their cozy little game going for their “secret” handlers.

And the sheeple keep sopping it up.

Hypocrits, liars, and traitors- with a steady supply of denial.

Any wagers on the time and place of the next domestic terror strike

dickjd | 7/12/2007, 1:00 am EST

thus the only person who could change the status quo hasn’t got a chance.

I’m still sending him $2,300 bucks.

dickjd | 7/12/2007, 1:07 am EST

And before i forget, havent the republicons been extremely diligent about bashing the “hollywood” naysayers and telling them to shut up and sing or act

But now, Fred Thompson is their savior. LOL

Tim~
Go to the grocery store.
Buy some Haagen-Dazs ice cream.
Sit down in front of your computer.
Point your browser to Youtube.
Search for “Ron Paul”.
Start watching the first 3 or 4 clips.
Eat some ice cream.
Watch some more clips.

Now, doesn’t that feel better? Isn’t Ron Paul an amazing person? You are probably wondering why you haven’t heard of him until now. That’s okay. There are a lot of us who feel this way. You are not alone.

Ron Paul is just that fucking cool.

ROMNEY??

SURE,, MIGHT AS WELL,
SO FAR WE’VE GOT RUDY, HILDA, OBAMA AND JOHN EDDARDS..
WHAT’S ANOTHER ONE GOING TO HURT..

GIVE THEM TIME, ONE DAY POLITICIANS ARE GOING TO LEARN TO MAKE LOVE TO AMERICA OVER THE T.V..

SO FAR ALL I’VE SEEN IS A FEW FOLKS TRYING TO TALK AMERICA INTO GOING TO THE PROM WITH THEM,,
GUESS WHAT?? DON’T MATTER WHO TAKES US,, WE’RE STILL GOING TO THE PROM..

fundraising | 7/12/2007, 5:44 pm EST

Lets see if we cant increase the gap in fund raising between McCain and Paul. As long as one doesn’t go over the $2000 some donation limit, can they donate more than once? No way I could donate $2000 at once, but I can easily give $100 every so often.

dbo | 7/12/2007, 9:50 pm EST

did ron paul tell all of his supporters to post comments on here or something? he does have more integrity than any other candidate, and is the only one to offer a true change from “politics as usual.” however, anyone who thinks he has a chance at winning must be smoking crack with Barack Obama and Rudy Giuliani’s friends. I think tim is right about Romney. McCain is already sunk. I expect that as the campaign heats up we’ll be shown pictures of Giuliani in a dress until we see it every time we close our eyes. Thompson will be a strong contender, but it appears now that his religious conservative credentials aren’t any stronger than anyone else’s. I think Romney will end up as the favorite of the big money republicans. in the end though, any of the three democratic front runners could probably beat ANY republican candidate. the republicans’ only chance is if Bloomberg or some other independent steals a lot of Hillary’s votes.

Margie Miller | 7/13/2007, 3:46 pm EST

Mitt may be squeaky clean but he scares me to death…especially since the LDS are famous for having to “heed to counsel”. I have many LDS friends in the history department that have been silenced or worse, excommunicated, for writing “unauthorized” history.

I can just see the LDS church running the country behind the scenes just like Chaney does right now.

Word | 7/14/2007, 12:58 am EST

I’d bet on Hillary-Thompson in 2008.

Guiliani is so corrupt in every way it will turn off con voters, Obama is black, Romney is Mormon, McCain is pathetic, Edwards is less popular than his haircut, Ron Paul is fighting Kucinich for the “biggest joke alive” award, and Gore isn’t running.

So it’s between the Robot and the abortionist! Clean fight…Break!

And the Word was made Foolish | 7/14/2007, 1:43 am EST

The biggest joke alive award nominations are in and the winner AGAIN is serial poster, “Word.

Congrats and keep up the shoddy screeds.

None of the above for Prez in 2008!

“Chas”- “Giuliani will win Florida, New York and, California primaries” – New York and California seem alittle more intelligent than you give them credit for(Melissa Gilbert, aside)…

Florida-a toss-up…But then we all know who Controls their “Election Process”…

Let Me Snort Coke | 7/17/2007, 1:32 am EST

Anyone who posts “Melissa Gilbert, aside” is no better, nay, vasty more evil than Bush. Didn’t Cindy Sheehan tell you that Ms Gilbert was the one who planned the immoral war, began global warming and destroyed Valerie Plame’s CIA career.

Yes, there are people more batsh@t lefty than you Cake. Which Bush daughter are you really?

BTW, which Republican do you think will win the NY, CA and FL Republican Primaries since you believe they deserve more credit? Us lefties need to know who to hate more. We’ll hate anyone who runs as a Republican but you clearly possess extraordinary knowledge excpet perhaps you need to research how a political party runs a Primary. CA, NY may deserve more credit but it sounds like you actually think CA Republicans will vote for Obama.

So, spawn of Chimpy McHitler, I’m interested in what current Republican candidate you think will
actually win the NY and CA Republican primary if not Thompson or Giuliani. Obviously Ron aul won’t win. Tell us how CA and NY Republicans will redeem themselves in your eyes?

All I know is I want Bush to pull the troops out of Iraq, plus the troops out of the Balkans that Clinton NEVER brought home, along with the troops from Germany, Japan and S. Korea that Truman sent and never brought back.

Plus there are US military troops setting up bases all over THIS country, too. Stop the insanity! Bring them all home NOW!!!!

Since when is Ron Paul grouped in the same name as Rudy McRomney?

The guy who’s more anti-war than any front running Democrat and more protective of our civil liberties than the ACLU is being grouped with The Three Scumbags?

Anyway, I know he doesn’t really have a chance, but neither does habeas corpus these days.
