japan+ germany+ iraq- | 5/1/2007, 1:36 pm EST

We really should compare these statistics to post war reconstruction in japan and germany. Might actually provide some idea of what it takes to rebuild a country in the wake of a power vacuum.

Tim Dickinson | 5/1/2007, 1:44 pm EST

Mike Moore is my hero.

hazmaq | 5/1/2007, 2:33 pm EST

What an obscene day this Mayday is Tim.
While you and I and millions of others demand justice, while Iraq continues to devours all life, Bush will seal his ultimate epitaph by way of a veto.

But on this Mayday, the more pathetic story is that Republicans appear to have learned nothing from Iraq.

While immigrants fill the streets seeking fair justice, the same Republican Senate who just last week spoke in favor of allowing more educated immigrants into the U.S. on grounds that it was cheaper than educating our own citizens, are on the floor of the Senate today in despair crying “mayday”.
Despair once again at the vast amounts of untapped oil and gas reserves out of their slimy reach.
Yep, they’re back with the maps and the warnings and the same ol blah blah. Only this time their evil doer isn’t Sadaam. It’s Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez.

The GOP against Chavez?
Now that could be entertaining!

“We really should compare these statistics to post war reconstruction in japan and germany. Might actually provide some idea of what it takes to rebuild a country in the wake of a power vacuum.”

Hey, i got a statistic that illuminates the difference: “number of sectarian groups trying to kill each other.”

Puremuny | 5/1/2007, 2:46 pm EST

Someday they will figure this out. The taxpayers will end up paying for this war and the rebuilding of a third world country.

Boner | 5/1/2007, 3:35 pm EST

I think the only important issue we need to be discussing here is the number of hot chick casualties. There is nothing worse than a pair of wasted titties.

ray | 5/1/2007, 4:16 pm EST

Misson accomplished? more like mission impossable. Bushs mission accomplished and Colin Powells speech to the un were both low points in American history. talk about terrible lies.

F.T.W | 5/1/2007, 4:26 pm EST

“We really should compare these statistics to post war reconstruction in japan and germany”.

Germany and Japan were nations that had existed for hundreds of years. The people were of a single background, especially after the Nazis killed all the outsiders. Iraq, on the other hand, was a nation created by the British with no regard for the ethnic and religious differences of the people it placed within its borders. You should try comparing it to the break up of Yugoslavia.

abandonedstation | 5/1/2007, 4:55 pm EST

to play the devil’s advocate for a second: when it was divided in 1945, Germany had existed as country for only eighty years.

Germany and Japan did have two things, though: social unity and security. Iraq has neither.

these are sobering facts all around. the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and i guess that road ends in Iraq.

Iraq is the Dems war, too | 5/1/2007, 5:13 pm EST

The vote FOR the War in the House:
296-133
The vote FOR the War in the Senate:
77-23

Now, in 2007, Democrats claim they were “duped” by Bush back in 2002. Somehow they expect voters in 2008 to give more power to these same gullible dupes!!!!

Who knows what else they’ll fall for and, when politically convenient, disavow having believed if given the Presidency?

Do these people ever have someone “Reality Check” their statements?

Sandles | 5/1/2007, 6:45 pm EST

At some point American’s have to say to themselves, “Why did I vote for a political figure that has involvement and control over oil? Why did I vote for a figure that can not change an education system in a state, let alone a country?” (The list could go on for a while.)
“Mr. President, What is going to stop this War from being another Vietnam?”

Josh | 5/1/2007, 7:33 pm EST

This has become an another Vietnam.

joshing | 5/1/2007, 8:19 pm EST

Another Vietnam? How original or did you cut and paste that from 2004?

This WILL become another Vietnam if we betray the Iraqi people by abandoning them like we did the S Vietnamese. The result: hundreds of thousands of people died.

Dems don’t care a whit about the Iraqi people. Better to score points against “Chimpy McHitler”, who won’t be President in a year and a half. What will they blame everything on then. Move On, indeed.

DeezNutz | 5/1/2007, 8:31 pm EST

“Democrats and Republicans are the same monster with different make-up”-I can’t remember where I heard that but I always liked it.

Jed Clampett | 5/1/2007, 8:54 pm EST

Republicants talking points about the emergency funding bill…

1)time tables are a recepy for defeat – How can it be defeat when the objective, to depose the dangerous tyrant, saddam hussein, was accomplished four years ago?

2)democrats are trying to micromanage the war – This coming from an administration that fired terrorism expert Gen. Shinseky when he revealed to congress that taking and holding iraq would require several hundred thousand troops and about a decade. Who, when asked about armour for vehicles being mangled by snipers and IED said ‘you go to war with the army you have, not the army you wish you had’.

3) the bill is full of pork – Has anyone looked at the previous supplementals and analyzed how much pork the republicant congress rubber stamped? I hope you are sitting down when you look, look closely though, it’s pretty well buried.

So far, each person in the US, owes more than $3000 on the war. Just the war! When will we ever be able to achieve energy independendance, viable education system, social security solvency, a good medical system and comprehensive healthcare for all when research on new sources of energy only get $4 bilion while companies that make many times that much in a quarter of a year are getting tens of billions to explore for more petroleum as well as huge tax breaks? You know, that money we give the gov to keep us safe from hunger, poverty, drugs, help us after natural disasters, etc. The republican party has got it inside it’s collective brain that by transferring that tax money from the treasury to a few select friendly companies in a time of war it is being ‘patriotic’ instead of selfish and greedy. What a joke.

BTW – there isn’t a power vacuum in iraq, the power is well placed in two groups, Sadrs block and the sunnys. Al qaeda is a fraction of the problem there, and when the iraqis realize that they seek to kill iraqis and take theyr oil they will send them back to their homelands in matchboxes. We cannot win a civil war that is not ours.

Word | 5/1/2007, 11:21 pm EST

Hear hear.

We already won in Iraq. Let’s get the fuck out.

If all the spineless “compassionate cons” who are all of a sudden so worried about the fate of a muslim half a world away really want to help, they can start a humanitarian aid group and put their money where their mouth is.

Otherwise SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Word | 5/1/2007, 11:29 pm EST

$500,000,000,000?

And to think, that money could have gone to education, medicine, police officers, Gulf Coast reconstruction, the environment, promoting small businesses, etc…

If there is a law here it is that conservatives are stupid: they apparently would rather blow $500 bil on Iraqis rather than Americans.

Then they call themselves patriotic. I quote Carlos Mencia: “Dee de Dee!”

You got suckered again, Con!

Sandles | 5/1/2007, 11:31 pm EST

Wow Joshing, I couldn’t even classify you as a moron, because I would be lying. That is why most of the material is in quotes on my comment. I did it for the simple fact that chance are it has been said before, in particular the Vietnam quote. Second, did a take a side in terms of particular party…uhhh…no. I hate ignorant people as in you, for the simple fact that you have the mentality that if you hate republicans you are automatically a democrat. To be honest with you, there hasn’t been a good president in a very long time. Frankly I think America is pretty fucked up when it comes to politics, not like many countries, but it sure is close.

Let Them Eat Cake | 5/2/2007, 12:03 am EST

The statistics are just plain Depressing…

Bush and his War-Hungry Loonies are intent to Play Political Games with the lives of our troops in Iraq…

No conscience, no attempt to increase the wages/health care benefits or, provide adequate Hospitalization for the seriously wounded vets returning from their “sacrifice” in Iraq…

The four year anniversary of The Big Bush and Cheney Con Job…”WMDS, Liberating Iraq(Ha), getting Hussein(That was a Go-Total Civil Unrest, now), providing “Democracy”-yea-just like ours(full of lies and death),
“Reconstruction”-Sure -with Halliburton leading the way into demolition and more destruction, four hours of electricity and scant water(worse than before Bush’s Oil War)…

Bush and Cheney are frothing at the mouth to start another “Campaign of Lies” against Iran…

When our country’s leaders are as big a liars as other countries under Evil Dictatorships, we would be Repeat Idiots to believe anything the Bush administration tries to Promote…

Danger ahead, unless the Demonic Duo are Escorted out of the Country…

Bush/Cheney/Rove /Rice/Wolfowitz-the New ‘World Bank Wiz’ w/girlfriend-ha/Perle have Zip credibility…

All of the “Deferment Team” should be made to go over and Finish the “War” on their own…

Let’s save lives that will be productive and promising and Bring the Troops Home…

Bush, Cheney and co. can Fill In and keep us “informed” on “how well it is going over in the “Vacationland-Iraq”….

I’d rather be a dupee than duper…
got it, ace? It was Bush and his Party Politicians Who Provided “Misleading Information” as the Excuse to go to War. Who has Profiteered off the war more than any other Party? Guess… Who has helped the Oil Companies make billions off the Tax Cuts that have robbed programs and funding so needed by Americans?

Money-greedy Fascists have CONjured
an illegitimate war-that would be the Republicans…

Control by Corporate take-over…
Control by taking away the rights of citizens under the guise of the “patriot act”…
Control of the media by buying up the networks, putting sponsers in like Oil, Insurance, Pharmaceuticals, Defence who have been Big Contributors to the Republican Party and “Tow the Propaganda that is misleading and misrepresentive of the American Majority-Not Real News.

BlackHalliburtKBR | 5/5/2007, 11:20 am EST

Seems to me that right-wingers simply do not like people who question and/or demean their republican leaders. However, isn’t it funny all the things that are being said about Pelosi, Clinton, Reid, et all? A hypocrite is a hypocrite is a hypocrite and the republican party is the biggest group of hypocrites on the planet. Period. Republican lies kill thousands of people. And they’re supposed to be the moral majority party? Funny how the religious party always pushes for war/death. Also funny how the right always demeans the left as ‘wacky lefties’. Seems to me Jesus Christ was as liberal as it gets………

Let Them Eat Cake | 5/7/2007, 1:20 am EST

Anyone notice that there was little coverage of the American Terrorist who planted a Bomb at an abortion clinic in Texas?

Little news whether the Insane Imbecile was caught-the bomb was discovered and diffused(Thank God)…

Anyone notice that the Bush administration just made it possible for all the Large Monopoly Corporate Publishers to make the decision to Cut Postal Rates for Large Mailing Publications like Time/Warner while Increasing Postal Rates for smaller publishers like “The Nation”.

It will be the new price of mailing publications-penalizing small publishers Soon…

It will be supsidizing large
publishers like Time/Warner and make it more difficult for small publishers to afford or even break even on their costs of mailing out their publications…

Very Fascist and it certainly puts More obstacles in the way of smaller businesses.

If you are not happy about the Monopoly Conservative Interests attempting to get rid of their “Competition”(Just like in the television industry)Send Complaints to the Postal Service, and places like MoveOn.Org…Etc…

Time/Wa rner has been a big disappointment since Bush Entered the White House- Stage Right-without the Majority and with lots of help from CNN…And other “pals” like Baker/Harris/J.Bush etc…

Any news on Gonzales and his pal Rove or Cheney(The Real Criminals)that Most people Know should be In Prison?

Let Her Foam at the Mouth | 5/7/2007, 11:25 am EST

Discounted postal rates for large volume users and higher rates for smaller ones? That IS a textbook definition of fascism.

Dr. Ralph | 5/7/2007, 8:19 pm EST

Let’s see, where was I… oh yeah! So now the son of God is a Liberal? I guess that thou shalt not kill commandment didn’t apply to pregnant women. You give us statistics Tim. Do you want one? THE ONE? 13,312.97… The Dow Jones Industrial average today. A new record high! Ever heard of voting your wallet? Stupid question you have more money than me. If Jesus does run on the Democratic ticket he will lose with this economy… Delete this one again. I LOVE IT!!!

C'mon Ralph | 5/7/2007, 10:56 pm EST

Yeah, it took Bush seven years to get the dow up to that level. Clinton raised it 5 thousand points in 8 years. Yeah, abortion is ‘allegedly’ murder to some people, but hunting for ‘fun’ isn’t. Yeah, you’re right…..Jesus would DEFINITELY be proud of the military/industrial complex, racism, oppression, bigotry, blah, blah, blah. Good stuff Ralph. ‘Pacifism’, according to you, is going to get us all killed. As if modern day ‘aggression’ works so well. Oh yeah, one more thing Ralph……: ‘Voting your wallet’ is DEFINITELY in the Bible. Which edition was that again? Project for a New American Century Testament?

Alien Billie | 5/8/2007, 10:30 am EST

Hey now, leave my new buddy alone! All he said was.. was.. oh. I see. Nevermind.
Ralph, you forgot to wash the pesticides off first again, didn’t you?

Dr. Ralph | 5/8/2007, 8:09 pm EST

Clinton inherited Reaganomics… made him look good you and Monica, if no one else. 13,309.07 suck on that.

Jed Clampet | 5/8/2007, 9:37 pm EST

reaganomics? you remember that? trickle down economics… the rich let you have what overflows their bladders. What an amazing ride that was.

HEY DOC, what’s the average of 300Million, 40thousand, 15 thousand and 5 thousand? looks great huh. Economy is booming when you take an average. Take the mean to get a more realistic representation. Don’t ask wallStreet to do it thouh. THey don’t want the public to know the reality. After 15 years of whitewater investigation all they got was a cum stained dress. Would expect better from the guy that helped Ford shred boxes o evidence they knew how badly the pinto was designed.

Alien Billie | 5/9/2007, 11:36 am EST

Ralph, you do realise that the stock market OUGHT to go up and up? That the last seven years have seen an unprecedented dip? And that anyway there’s more to a healthy economy than a rising stock market? And that there’s more to a healthy country than a healthy economy? And that once upon a time this thread was all about the awful statistics coming out of Iraq?

Dr. Ralph | 5/21/2007, 11:03 pm EST

13,542.88 That “unprecedented drop” was 3000 points within 6 months of 9/11/2001. Nice recovery W.

407,300- American Death toll WWII

117,000- American Death toll WWI

47,378- American Death toll Vietnam

54,229- American Death toll Korean War

I don’t want to make it seem like its not a big deal that over 3,352 Americans have died in the war on terror. I will be forever grateful for their sacrifice, however in comparison to past wars its like a drop in a puddle. i guess back then the public actually supported the military AND the wars they fought. Im in the Marines and i enlisted so I could have a chance to fight in the war. No one realizes this but thats the reason why the most people have enlisted in the last few years. Its not because they’re too stupid to go to college. Like Al Gore would have you believe. We knew what we were getting ourselves into.

Let Them Eat Cake | 5/23/2007, 11:23 pm EST

Don’t compare this Farce to any other “War”…

Perle, Cheney, Bush, Wolfowitz, Rumsfelf, Fife Smelled Oil=money, control, “War Legacy”=easy pickins…

Hitler was Intent on Taking Over The World, so my grandparents tell me…

Hussein did not have the troops, equipment, WMDS, Lust for taking over anything, anymore…He was impotent…

“Twas Greed and Craze for Power” that led us into this Horrendous Mess and we can thank the Bush administration and “loyalists” who engineered this Fiasco and Romp into Madness(A striking resemblance
to Hitler’s modus operandi)…

Jed=

Mike Moore is my hero, too…(Hope you’re not being sarcastic-’cause I mean it)…

Melanie Mahaney | 5/24/2007, 9:11 am EST

This war on terror has been over since Nov maybe even earlier than that. The president didn’t do anything while he was running for re-election, he could have but he just didn’t b/c it was an election year and no politician wanted to go near that. There was so many things that could have be done differenly but wasn’t. Its just sad really, no one can stand this president. Believe me the GOP is done for the next 20 years b/c of this president. This has to one of the worst presidents in American history but the worst goes to Buchanan. This is a 16 year old girl saying this. I just can’t wait to see what happens next in a few years, its going to be interesting.

Jed Clampett | 5/25/2007, 1:27 am EST

not sure what you talking about cake, I haven’t said anything about Moore, it may be a post by an impostor that I can’t see.

I can appreciate Mike’s investigative reporting and the way he exposes the hypocrecy perpetrated by the most powerful nation on earth. However, I don’t like his sensationalizing and some of his tacics. I guess that’s how you have to push message to a population that has been degraded by a poor educational system and a wayward ‘entertainment’ industry.

Bambi Maynor | 5/28/2007, 6:34 am EST

This is one takes the cake. It’s true that Bush didn’t start this war but he sure made it worse. Not only is he keeping our troops there to rebuild the places he just blew up but he is robbing Americans of thier hard earned money to rebuild it all! Bush is nothing but an ignorant redneck. That’s bad when someone from the south (Louisiana) says that. He needs to lay off cocaine & Jim Beam. This retard is going to get us all killed. This war ranks up there with Veitnam. I don’t think it’s a useless war on terrorism but now Bush is just being moronic. I have nothing but the deepest respect, love, & sympathy for these soldiers because they are stopping some terrorist from invading my home and shoving a gun in my 2 & 4 year old’s faces. They do no serve or die in vain. They are over there for a reason. I also have the deepest admiration for the families of the slain soldiers. They are my heros just as well as the soldiers. They are the ones left behind to deal with demons that haunted thier loved ones. They constantly ask why and they are never going to get an answer to that question and they know it. They are helpless. I’m asking everyone to not lose faith and support the men & women protecting this great nation. I know the country has more or less gone to hell but we’ve all seen how we can pull together in the face of danger. 9/11 showed exactly how much love and courage we have. This one is for my heros, the soldiers & thier families, my heart, love, & deepest sympathies are with ya’ll every second of every day. I pray for ya’ll every night when I lay my head down. I thank ya’ll from the bottom of my heart. Please don’t give up….

What's Right: | 7/13/2007, 3:48 pm EST

Bush should be charged with war crimes. This was a preimpted war that has no cause because Bush’s excuse was that he believed that there were weapons of mass destruction when our inspectors over there said there wasn’t.

What's Right | 7/13/2007, 3:52 pm EST

Bush should be charged with war crimes after starting an uneccassary war saying his excuse to start the war was that he believed there were weapons of mass destruction when our inspectors over in Iraq before the war started said there wasn’t.

Morgs | 8/3/2007, 3:53 am EST

Woah. This ‘what’s right’ kid is a genius. He should be writing articles since he is so obviously clued up on the whole situation. I can’t argue with what you wrote and now I too hate George Bush. Charged with war crimes? That’s brilliant…
