Obama: Morning in America, and Beyond

4/24/07, 3:20 pm EST

Barack Obama's foreign policy

I’ve been waiting for the rubber to meet the road with Barack Obama. His rocket ride to the highest levels of American poiltics has been a lot of sizzle, and just enough substance to keep the afterburner kicking.

I was patently disappointed when the Senator released his ‘solution‘ for global warming last week. It combines technocratic half steps and half measures (reductions in the greenhouse intensity of the American auto fleet) with policy proposals tailored to please the ethanol belt, rather than, you know, actually halt catastrophic climate change. Dubbed, forgettably, the National Low Carbon Fuel Standard — or even worse the NLCFS, in Beltway acronymese — Barack’s proposal seems to give lie to the claim that he does not know the ‘ways of Washington’ and seems to help explain why wonked out senators have such a hard time rising to the White House.

The plan seems cautious and timid and unoriginal — indeed, it is largely a national version of something proposed by Ahnold for California — and just a hair better than Hillary Clinton’s ethanol-centric jibber-jabber on the topic.

I was expecting to be similarly disappointed by Obama’s foreign policy proposals this week. But I gotta say. Wow.

Smart. Substantive. Forward looking. Comprehensive. Fearless.

Really, you gotta read this.

These are the ways we will answer the challenge that arrived on our shores that September morning more than five years ago. A 21st century military to stay on the offense, from Djibouti to Kandahar. Global efforts to keep the world’s deadliest weapons out of the world’s most dangerous hands. Stronger alliances to share information, pool resources, and break up terrorist networks that operate in more than eighty countries. And a stronger push to defeat the terrorists’ message of hate with an agenda for hope around the world.

It’s time we had a President who can do this again – who can speak directly to the world, and send a message to all those men and women beyond our shores who long for lives of dignity and security that says “You matter to us. Your future is our future. And our moment is now.”

Obama’s vision is Reagan’s “Morning in America,” but on a global scale.

I don’t know how well this fearless internationalism is going to play in Peoria. But this is a clear, robust articulation of a highly developed worldview. Whatever he lacks in experience, Obama clearly doesn’t lack in insight. He’s just raised the bar for every candidate in this race.

“Word” you are so wrong…
Americans will vote for Obama in ‘08 unless Jeb, Harris, Baker decide to upset Democracy, again, and Put another Republican Stepford in using their Cheat Sheets and bribing/threatening/cheerleadi ng the Confused and Cheatwilling political officials to “Fix” ‘08 like they did the past two ‘PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS’.

Then, the American People Need need to get off their collective asses and make sure their Votes Count….(Watch Like a Hawk) but not the war-profiteering kind…

“Regime Change Begins Now”-start letting your congressmen/women know you want Paper Ballots, Paper Trails, Neutral Nations to Provide Oversight, Recounts when large numbers of “voter discrepancies” occur!

Let’s keep the Republicans humble and unemployed for awhile-maybe they will actually clean up their act and “actors”.

Time to put on “Bobby” and see what “Real Policies” and Idealism were all about…

We can do it…

21stCentury | 4/27/2007, 3:16 pm EST

After listening to a few folks from Britain, I must say that at least our closest ally DESPERATELY wants Obama elected. If they had their way, they’d carry Bush out of the White House right now and replace him with Barack before midnight. If this is the view of the rest of the world, we may have a chance to rescue our image abroad (worlwide opinion of America has never been worse than it is today). Obama, 1 billion times smarter than Bush on Dubya’s best day, would improve world opinion of America in ways we (Americans) could never truly comprehend. Can you imagine his kind of charisma and personality on the world stage? He has the ability to galvanize the world. Bush, on the other hand, has people in Ireland calling him a criminal. Brits and Scots line up to boo him whenever he visits any corner of the UK (they’ve done so for years). Rumsfeld cannot step foot in Germany without being arrested. They’ve already charged him with war crimes. We don’t realize how much harm the Bush admin. has done to our standing in the world…it’s worse than you think.

Those that say Obama cannot be elected are fooling themselves: The big electoral college states are New York, California, Florida, and Texas. New York (New Yorkers hate Guiliani) and California will vote for Obama in droves. That would mean that all he has to do is win one more big state. Florida is slowly becoming a northern state since so many northerners continue to move there every day. If he wins the Democratic primary, he truly is half way there.

If you really go state by state (MD, PA, WA, OR, NJ, Michigan, all of New England, Wisconsin, etc), you can see that he has a 50/50 chance of being president even now. Give him another year to campaign all across America, and his odds can only improve.

CeeCee | 4/26/2007, 2:45 pm EST

Obama has a much better understanding of the world than any other candidate. He lived in Indonesia for four years as a child. He went to school there and understands the people and the politics there. Also, with his roots in Africa, his travels to that continent and his experience with his relatives there have given him much better insights into African problems than others have. It’s not an empty phrase for him when he talks about giving people hope around the world. America will be safer when people around the world feel secure.

Jed Clampett | 4/26/2007, 2:42 pm EST

True to his course and the american people? Have you been living in that large country, Africa, for the last six years? He lied about being the enviroment president during his debates… first order of business was to dilute the laws to permit large polluters to continue polluting. He told us he was a ‘uniter not a divider’ in respect to workings in washington when the truth was that under his tenure the political climate has been more divisive since the 70’s. Swore to protect and uphold the constitution and america’s laws and promptly proceded to make a mockery of fisa law and had his party rubberstamp legislation to rescind protections in the constitution. Knowingly and repeatedly lied about the intelligence used to lead us into a quagmire.
Damn, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Some folks are just easily deluded by charisma and loyalty to a political party regardless of how low an esteem they hold for the values that created this nation I guess.

ArmadilloPhil | 4/26/2007, 1:37 pm EST

there is nothing here, the rhetoric is the same as spewed forth by everyone else in one format or another. Execution makes the action, until then it’s just more politcally correct doubletalk and half truths. President Bush, whatever faults may he have, has been true to his course and to the American people. What do you want another changes with the polls Clinton !
God Bless the United States of America, President George Bush and the U.S Military

mikeky | 4/26/2007, 9:59 am EST

anonymous (two or three responses below: meet the PERIOD. see that little dot? it’s a period. there it is again.

it’s been noted that periods help with sentence formation. learn to love the period. see? they’re everywhere. and people can understand you when you use them. isn’t that awesome cool?

Jed Clampett | 4/25/2007, 11:12 pm EST

reps are realists? Talk about deluded.

Anonymous | 4/25/2007, 5:30 pm EST

dems are idealists and reps are realists but anyway it doesnt matter this is what every hopeful candidate says i mean do you expect any candidate to come out with bad news most of it is the two party politics deal especially now that the two are so splintered i mean youre both batting for the same team here shape up Go McCaine in 08 probably the most moderate maybe he can bring some unity back to the country

Mike | 4/25/2007, 4:07 pm EST

A lot of these comments are ridiculous, cynical and frankly stupid. Obama’s message on foreign policy is insightful and just plain rational. He basically just uses common sense to help the average American understand where he’s coming from. It would greatly improve our standing in the world and overall security. Bush will end up being one of, if not the worst president in history and Obama would bring about a must needed change in American politics.

Jab | 4/25/2007, 3:24 pm EST

You guys act as if we’re actually the ones voting for president! The Electoral College deals with the Executive; our opinions mean little more than fuck.

Cooter | 4/25/2007, 2:53 pm EST

Trey Parker/Matt Stone in 2008! That’s the only way I’ll vote.

DeezNutz | 4/25/2007, 2:38 pm EST

Reality08- the current administration and a lot of members of Congress are the ones commiting treason. They do not have the best interests of the people of the United States in mind; only their own. Illegal wars, illegal surveillance, bad intelligence, political corruption, larceny on the grandest scale are what these folks have been busy doing.

al | 4/25/2007, 12:45 pm EST

same political rhetoric different politician. he has a snowballs chance in hell of becoming president. It is Guilianis Presidency to lose

ray | 4/25/2007, 11:59 am EST

Senator Obama is the only candidate offering America the future we deserve. to say he is unelectable is cynical. He can win if people who are tired of the status quo the war and want a future of hpoe vote for him primary and election.

Luke | 4/25/2007, 11:52 am EST

This statement basically says nothing. It’s a bunch of political babble not much different from what Bush spews

ya im good | 4/25/2007, 11:47 am EST

to disagree with your goverment is not treason, though thats what republicains and old gorgey boy would like us to think, it is our duty to tell the goverment they are doing the wrong things. It is what makes us americans. And yes we should feel guilty as a people for letting this administration destroy our image. the world didnt always hate us

Asiseeit | 4/25/2007, 11:20 am EST

Reality?, “It is failing becuase as a people we have no self control. We are lawless and arrogant.”
You are speaking of our government in general here, right? Our “leaders” are, and will be, the lawless and arrogant ones until the people demand better.

The Dems are NOT committing treason. To disagree is not treason, to finally listen to the American majority and do our bidding, as intended, is not treason.
Was the assissination of Calligula treason? No, it was self preservation of a country.

Reality08 | 4/25/2007, 10:27 am EST

The Democrates are doing nothing short of committing treason! The reality of this world is that America is hated globally. No matter who is put in office, this attitude will not change. Once we run out of food and starbucks and SUV rides to the mall we’ll realize that our democracy is failing. It is failing becuase as a people we have no self control. We are lawless and arrogant.

Other Lander | 4/25/2007, 8:25 am EST

As if you guys are ever going to elect a black guy

purvis ames | 4/25/2007, 8:20 am EST

Number one: Obama is unelectable. Why do you think the fascists are pouring money into his campaign?
Number two: As far as carbon emissions go, ethanol is just as bad as gasoline. Any politician yapping about the benefits of ethanol is either an idiot or a liar.

Gisseppi | 4/25/2007, 8:18 am EST

More liberal, pie-in-the sky, drivel. It sure sounds nice, but he assumes that the other nations actually work with us toward “Stronger alliances to share information, pool resources, and break up terrorist networks”.

We have a president who tried all these things, but the rest of the world was content to remain on the sidelines. Liberals scream “give it TIME”, while terror cells multiply. Time is the great ally of the terrorist. They know that as the nations meet, plan, go on fact-finding tours, and form the inevitable committees, they can ACT.

When we get a president who acts, in OUR interests, he is labeled a war monger. Guess it is time to get this guy elected so we can all go back to sleep.

anonymoustroll | 4/25/2007, 8:06 am EST

Perhaps he’s “timid” on global warming because he knows that:

1 - you don’t want to go committing the economy of US to a self-nut-bashing carbon strategy when we still have 5 years of war to pay for.

2 - anything the US might do to address global warming is dwarfed by business as usual in China (remember, we’re down wind from them).

The reality is that the best thing that could possibly happen for the Planet would be for both the US and China economy to crash hard and suddenly… followed by a really strong strain of bird-flu global pandemic.

International_che | 4/25/2007, 6:08 am EST

It’s nice to know that some American actually care about policies as opposed to characters…you’ve left me pleasantly surprised. Now if you could convince the rest of your country mate to choosing presidents like they do a pop idol then maybe things might work out. The only reason your democracy isn’t working anymore is because a high majority of you are allowing yourself to be brain-washed, scared…turn off that idiot box and use this one.

Let Them Eat Cake | 4/25/2007, 3:30 am EST

Vote Democratic and, remove the glut of Republicans who have controlled the White House and Congress for far too long.

No oil-friends/families, No war-mongers, No Delusional and Imperialistic Dunces…

McInSane is Crazy to Cheerlead Bush and Cheney into another War-Profiteering Venture with Iran.

There are so many deadly, disasterous messes that need Cleaning Up after the Bush/Cheney Disaster Team, people need to Vote for New Leadership that does not have strings to the Bush administration, the oil companies, the pharmaceutical companies/insurance companies…

The American people were Big into the Personal lives of Politicians and, it Was Overdone and, we ended up with the Boy Wonder who “Was going to put Integrity back in the White House”–we ended up with the Most Corrupt and Inept Specimen in Modern History(GWB) and it just Gets Worse, the more his Crimes are being Exposed…

Obama, Edwards, Gore, Clinton are better than anything the Republicans are Pushing…

Watch Cheney and Bush Goad Iran into a war-all their “candidates” sound like Shifty Used-Car Salesmen for the Next Step in the Bush/Cheney Disaster Plan…

The Lies they have Handed the American People, are Criminal and should Earm them Prison Sentences-why has the Press Failed to Spotlight the seriousness of their
Traitorous Acts…

Which Country is the next Big-Oil Rich country-Iran…

Pakistan, North Korea, etc. will never be a “Threat” as long as the demented oil companies Control the Republican Party.

Funny, the two Countries that have been “Deemed” the “Biggest Threat to us” by Greed and Avarice(B&C) was Iraq(No WMDS and now, Iran)Little countries with so much Oil(That belongs to Them-not us)but just Bush’s and Cheney’s size…

Forget China and Russia-but they May Not Forget Us, should we go after Iran…

Obama has a good record on seeing through the Bush B.S. and Of Good Judgment-which is crucial

eatbees | 4/25/2007, 3:23 am EST

“A 21st century military to stay on the offense, from Djibouti to Kandahar” — this sounds like “law enforcement at your office, in your kid’s classroom and at your dinner table” only on a global scale.

Most of the world knows what police states are like, but what Obama seems to be proposing is something the world hasn’t seen yet, a high-tech police empire wrapped in an “agenda for hope.”

He wants us to believe he’s got the street cred to smile, reach out to the world’s poor and get them to swallow this massive (yet righteous) intrusion into their lives. “Your future is our future” indeed!

Explain to me in what substantive way this is different from the neoconservative agenda of the last five years. “Fearless internationalism” is what Bush is about, too.

Furious George | 4/25/2007, 1:40 am EST

Obama holds a vision that is inspiring. With my parents coming from a third world country I know the hope that America is to those who struggle.

Obama understands that respect from the world isn’t forced or bought. America needs to lead by becoming partners with other nations; not by looking down on them as less than us.

Besides it’s better to have a visionary with an ideolgy that is not oriented towards acquiring oil.

anonymous | 4/25/2007, 1:23 am EST

rollingstone needs to stop blowing the dems. it’s quite obvious

shonny | 4/25/2007, 12:02 am EST

Well, from an outsider’s view, Obama is the least horrible option for next US president.
The American fascists (Republicans) will of course try to put spanners in the wheels, but with some luck won’t succeed this time.

Jed Clampett | 4/25/2007, 12:00 am EST

I know this is a little off topic but… did anyone catch McCain’s Rumsfeldian performance on the Daily Show tonite?
Man, he’s embraced all the tactics of the current administration. I guess he’s been talking to a sith lord or something. Not only did he go into a question and answer tirade with himself a la Rumsfeld, he also refused to answer questions openly and alluded that the audience were supporters of terrorism. He followed that with trying to talk over the questions posed by Stewart a la Karl Rove. Big props to Jon Stewart for meeting McCain’s bullshit with straight talk and serious questions… I imagine McCain will need to go to Fox & Friends to refill his well of denial.

BTW-I thought they removed his melanoma from his left cheeck, is he holding nutz in there like a hamster or can we expect him to be treated for cancer in the near future?

Word | 4/24/2007, 10:09 pm EST

Americans won’t vote for Obama because they’re the same morons who voted for W. in 2000 AND 2004. Unfortunately you can’t cure stupidity, but he’ll try.

OBAMA IN 2008!!!!!!

Jab | 4/24/2007, 9:55 pm EST

Well, I’ll forward this to the Electorate, may they vote soundly.

Jim | 4/24/2007, 7:22 pm EST

Too much “what” and not enough “how.”

“And a stronger push to defeat the terrorists’ message of hate with an agenda for hope around the world.”

Uhm… Ok. This could potentially mean anything from nuking Pakistan to passing out anti-terrorism lollipops. Can we get a little more specific?…

Zbassman | 4/24/2007, 5:33 pm EST

Some of us here in Texas were NOT fooled by GWB. From his first run to the Governers mansion I knew he was an evil s.o.b. I attended part of a fund raising rally for GWB when he was running for governer. When he walked in to the room I literally felt a cold shiver run down my spine. His presence made me feel sick to my stomach; like I’d just walked in to find our Priest molesting an alter boy.

Obama would be such a vast improvement over the current POTUS. But then I’d prefer to have Bill back. Or Hillary. Or Chelsea. Hell, I’d even take that stained blue dress over GWB.

DeezNutz | 4/24/2007, 5:23 pm EST

I’m not denying that he would make a better Pres. than W. I’m pretty sure that even I could manage that. IF he writes his own speeches than he’s just gained a lot more of my respect. I’ll have to look more closely at what he says in the future.

Dr. Ralph | 4/24/2007, 5:13 pm EST

I wish I hadn’t read the good news about Obama. His global climate crisis solution that takes American economic interests into account even impresses me… Is this a move to the center ala Bubba Clinton?

Cooter | 4/24/2007, 5:01 pm EST

Since when could a negro run for president?

Jed Clampett | 4/24/2007, 5:00 pm EST

I’ve read that he is one of the few politicians that actually writes his own speeches. He seems quite honest to me even though he is a career politician… has alot more public service cred than the current POTUS.

Some of us here in TX where really hoodwinked by GW… in his days as governor he would actually finish complete sentences without stammering while trying to remember what his handlers told him to say. Sad actually.

Chele Belle | 4/24/2007, 4:43 pm EST

You hear this every election year??? From who??? Oh well. I’d vote for a cankersored broke d**k dog before I’d vote Republican so
Barack can say all he wants.

real change | 4/24/2007, 4:34 pm EST

that will come about when the two party stranglehold is broken. Do that and the lobbyists that buy politicians will suddenly find that they cant just buy off each side of the same coin. Do that and the choice of lesser of two evils will not be an issue. Do that and you will see competition in ideas from candidates instead of a monopoly.

DeezNutz | 4/24/2007, 4:27 pm EST

I hope so, too. But, I have serious doubts. This is just more of the same b.s..

Anonymous | 4/24/2007, 4:26 pm EST

Hopefully in 2008

DeezNutz | 4/24/2007, 3:32 pm EST

Does he actually write his own speeches though? It seems like a lot of promises like we hear every election year. When are the people of this country gonna stand up and demand some real change?
