Global Warming Progress? Not For All the Coal in China

4/24/07, 1:00 pm EST

The Wall $treet Journal has one of the most depressing reports I’ve read this year.

China’s boom-time economy is producing a spike in greenhouse emissions that could undo the progress sought in the Kyoto treaty — and then some.

Just some facts:

  • China is poised to become the globe’s top emitter of greenhouse gases this year, three years ahead of previous estimates.
  • In the next ten years, China will add a “European Union’s worth” of coal fired power plants.
  • “Unchecked, over the next 25 years, the growth of China’s greenhouse-gas emissions is forecast to double that of all the members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which includes, Europe, the U.S., Canada, South Korea and Japan.”

According to Faith Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, the developed world’s anti-global warming efforts are essentially futile absent a strong Chinese commitment. “Without having China on board,” she told the Journal, “without having them play a significant role, all these efforts, none of it, will make any sense.”

Well, I’ve always wondered how they figure those forecasts. It’s hard to compute the effect Beijing ‘08 will have China’s emissions growth: could cause an increase, what with all the preparations; could cause a decrease, as such could be a preparation. It’s really difficult to say, but one thing I will say is that efforts to curb our emissions are not “futile.”

If we(Westerners) do not curb our carbon emissions, it will only increase the burden bore by the planet, not to mention place no pressure on the Chinese to reduce their carbon emissions. The Chinese are an amazing people, don’t expect the time between a resolution to reduce emissions and a reduction in emissions to take as long as our own efforts. This is the sort of thing collectivism excels at.

looks like America is going to have to step it up if u want to stay the #1 in greenhouse gass emmissions

DEATH TO AMERICA!!

Jed Clampett | 4/24/2007, 5:07 pm EST

A couple of articles I’ve read recently speak to the effor going on in china to get the public of the grid… which really should be our first order of business… they are using solar water heaters, solar panels, solar concentrators and some photovoltaic. I just hate the dishonest, melodramatic arguments from the ‘planet hater’ crowd that says if china doesn’t do it it’s going to hurt us. Look, start acting like we care and earth will take care of us… keep acting like we don’t give a damn and we will have more severe and stronger storms… with alot more tornados being generated. Realize, as the ancient cultures did, that earth is a living being, and though it doesn’t have limbs as we do or see things from the same perspective, it is not totally devoid of options to deal with the ‘human problem’.

What Kyoto progress? | 4/24/2007, 7:10 pm EST

Most European Kyoto “progress” has been illusory. Fact of the matter is the UN says even if we all decide to live in a cabin in Montana like Ted Kazinski we will only affect temp increase by something like 1 degree (who cares C or F, either way it’s negligible.)

Fuck that. Fill ‘er up.

Now what? | 4/24/2007, 7:22 pm EST

Jed, put down the “bubbling crude”, the earth is no more a living being than say, your brain is.

Good luck getting the Chinese to “hippie up” for an unproven theory based on computer models – the same computers which probably picked the Lakers to win the NBA champuionship this year.

How gullible are you people?

PS Death to Wazzup.

Hmmm . . . someone’s never taken a biology course, more specifically an ecological biology course. Fuck the ecosystem we’ve evolved into and we fuck ourselves.

Its good to see all the readers commenting on the threat to the worlds climate by the growth of Chinas coal based electrical generation. Its way easier to block local efforts to improve grid reliability or berate the Bush administration than actually contribute to a solution – that would require them to pay attention in class and study something useful like science or engineering. The real solutions take longer than an 8 second soundbite and the growth of China was why the Bush administration didnt sign Kyoto. In case you missed it China is a Kyoto signatory but is classified as Annex B. In other words it has no reduction target for GHG. Germany which did sign as well is building 26 new coal powered plants using the credits it gained by using 1990 as the baseline (ie by getting credit for the collapse of East Germanys appalling polluting industry) The Kyoto accord penalised the US for being the first country in the world to legislate limits to power plant emissions with the 1970 Clean air act.

to disagree with your goverment is not treason, though thats what republicains and old gorgey boy would like us to think, it is our duty to tell the goverment they are doing the wrong things. It is what makes us americans. And yes we should feel guilty as

Now what,
The global spread of AIDS was just a computer model once. To say the earth is not a living entity is just pure ignorance.
Come on in…welcome to the Church of Reason, I see you’ve never been here before, or a science class.

kyoto progress= us bashing | 4/25/2007, 2:40 pm EST

kyoto was a platform to attack the US politically, not a sound model for reducing manmade pollutants. The reductions made under kyoto fall short of the reductions the US has made even after considering that the US has already grabbed most the low hanging fruit in the tree of emissions cuts. Anyone who takes the kyoto seriously aught to research data collected and compare what the average kyoto signee has accomplished to what america has. Even before considering that most countries have a huge advantage seeing as they can just go after the simpler and cheaper means of reducing pollutants that america has already done and thus making their decreases look better, it still is outweighed by the decreases america has pushed for, all without some bullshit protocol that favors some countries over others.

Oh and leave china the fuck alone. Infrastructure, technological and economic advancement cant be raised by will alone. They are lifting themselves up by the most feasible means which at this time relies on coal. Think all the western world would have made it past the industrial era without it? Think they could have jumped straight to nuclear energy? Even with foreign investment, it is simply not practical to demand they have the resource efficiency while trying to develop. As they progress such demands will become more understandable but not yet.

——————-

You sound like the one who needs to take a science course. The earth is a hunk of rock and molten metal, it is not alive, there are living things on it but the planet is just a rock. And for the record oil is natural, it comes out of the ground.

“The global spread of AIDS was just a computer model once”

A broken clock is also correct twice a day. So what?
Too many researchers are making a living off taxpayer money and then some off catastrophic global warming “predictions”. What about their motivations.
Energy companies stand to make billions off carbon trading scemes. Happy about that?

Capitalist Pig | 4/26/2007, 7:00 am EST

A recent poll by Zogby shows only 30% of Americans believe global warming is a real threat. While 30% is alot, considering the propoganda put out by the mainstream media, who regurgitate anything gore says as fact, it really is low. Thankfully people have other sources of information now days and the msm has lost alot of it’s clout.

The majority of the people who buy into this crap are envirokooks who are always going to believe the planet is on the verge of doom. It makes them feel important, they can say they are saving the world from the evil oil companies, and the evil power companies.

But now that Sheryl Crow is on the case we don’t have to worry, the problem will surely be solved. Since all these musicians are so concerned maybe that should give up touring. I wonder how much electricity it takes to put on a rock concert? A lot. The sound system, the lighting, the electricity for the arena, the tour buses, or planes, the trucks to haul the equipment, the limos. Let’s see them practice what they preach for once.

Jed Clampett | 4/26/2007, 4:50 pm EST

30% of americans… considering that about 50% of american’s are apathetic and don’t give a rat’s butt about what happens in the world or outside of their own 3ft radius, I’d say that’s a pretty large number.

It wasn’t until the mid 1800s to early 1900s or perhaps even later that the ‘modern’ medical community and the public accepted that disease was caused by foreign bodies called microbes. By comparison, ayurvedic practitioners in india have known this for 5000 years. The main reason we have an energy crisis is because scientists of the day did not understand Nikola Tesla’s science therefore they considered it false and have really erased his name from engineering text books. He was doing wireless communications in the 1890s. People have always had alot of trouble accepting things outside of the norm or established credence, particularly those with closed minds and shrunken brains. Eventually people will realize earth is a living being and will look poorly upon the 18th to 21st century of people for being so disrespectful and abusive of their homeworld.

Who is stupid enough to think that you can clear cut the rainforests and not affect climate?

Asiseeit | 4/26/2007, 6:12 pm EST

Pig,
As much as you fail to see it, it is still there. This “rock” is alive and changing all the time. This planet, as a whole is ALWAYS evolving. The land masses move and change, the volcanic islands grow in size with every eruption, the biology of the world is to adapt. We have been placing a demand on the earth to adapt, just like our bodies do when faced with disease. Reflect for a bit, boys.

Asiseeit | 4/26/2007, 8:07 pm EST

Oh, also, Pig,
Arsenic is also a naturally occuring substance. Just cause it’s natural dosen’t mean its safe. And, it’s the BURNING of that oil and coal that makes it dangerous. Nothing you don’t already know…so whats your point?

As Reality,
The function of science, since the begining, has been the search for truth. Science cannot be manipulated, only the numbers can. If it is repeatable and verifiable and reviewed by scientific peers, there must be some validity to it. It may not be 100% spot on, but there is too much evidence to back it up, in my eyes. Besides, who would you trust the most? A scientist working for some university, who gets paid no matter the outcomes, OR a scientist who works for a multi-billion dollar energy company which stands to loose untold billions when this thing is proved to be true?

Jed Clampett | 5/1/2007, 12:57 pm EST

I guess if you are like most folks entranced by religiosity, it won’t matter to you much what happens to earth, in fact, it seems they are fully intent in destroying earth to see what lies beyond.
What you describe in the first part of your post is what a slave is… merely allowing the circumstances of life to step over them without as much as at least an opinion on the issue.
If you care about the life your children/grandchildren will live through and are not totally devoid of empathy, then yes it is your problem. If you don’t want to suffer through the hardship of famine, drought, flood and other ‘natural’ disasters then it is your problem.
What matters is whether or not you at least demand a solution from those people you give your money to so that they manage the problems appropiately (politicians).
In fact, if you do nothing else to do your part to save the homeworld, at the very least let your favorite politician know that you want some sort of action to come up with viable solutions. Change those inefficient incandescent light bulbs that haven’t changed much since the 1800’s for Compact Flourescents (another of tesla’s ideas BTW). Drive intelligently instead of acting like you are in a race all the time.
Maybe a drop of water does not make the ocean wet, the ocean is wet because it has drops of water, but if that drop is part of a wave it can crush anything that gets in it’s way. People don’t act because they think one person cannot make a difference… MLK, Ghandy, Mandela, Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Hitler, Lenin, all knew that it only takes one person to start a movement.
One single falling stone can start a landslide that can dramatically change anything that stands in it’s way.
Think of it this way… if there truly is reincarnation(as so many ancient religions believed) or that you have eternal life(here is the only place to live that life,no heaven, no hell, only earth and the state of mind you live in) then the things you do today will affect the quality of life you live in a future life. Make a positive contribution instead of just refuting anything you don’t understand as mere fantasy.

Capitalist Pig | 5/2/2007, 7:15 am EST

Jed Clampett | 4/27/2007, 2:53 pm EST

tesla’s ideas did not work??? look at a light bulb… the power that feeds it and everything else in your home is delivered by Alternating Current concepts that he discovered, implemented and GAVE humanity despite the dirty tricks and negative pr campaign brought on by Edison.
——————— ——-

More fantasy jed. Tesla did not come up with alternating current, in fact Tesla beleived in direct current. But I know it fits your liberal mold of the guy who wanted to save the planet but was robbed by the evil industrialist. Too bad it is not true, in fact Tesla was just trying to get rich like everyone else. As for you compact fluouresent bulbs, you do realize they contain mercury, not a safe substance. So where are we going to dispose of all these mercury contiaining bulbs when they burn out?

p.s. why does everyone leave such a long comment? remember kidz its a comment not an article.

Jed Clampett | 5/8/2007, 9:48 pm EST

interesting, my laptop shows my previous post but the media pc does not. Wonder why that is? Either way, lard ass… you are either high on stupidity or it’s just your natural state… I tend to think it’s your natural state… STUPID!!

Tesla was the master of alternating currents, he knew more than we could possibly imagine today. They still can’t figure out how he was doing some of the stuff he was doing. Who you lying to besides yourself? no one, pal, no one!!
