With a Dick Like This, Who Needs Cheney

4/9/07, 12:58 pm EST

Why did President Bush get a blank check to go to war? The answer is Dick Gephardt.

Senators Joe Biden and Dick Lugar had, at the time in 2002, a more modest, bi-partisan war authorization bill that would have checked the president’s power, at least a little, requiring him to report back to Congress before firing any Tomahawks at Baghdad.

The Biden/Lugar bill had the votes to pass, on a bipartisan basis. But then Dick Gephardt, in an attempt to appear presidential in a runup to his own White House bid, cut a secret deal with Bush … and suddenly appears in a Rose Garden ceremony giving the president a war bill so expansive in its scope that it allows The Decider to unilaterally wage preemptive war against not only Iraq but any perceived threat.

We may yet end up in Iran because of Dick Gepardt’s misguided presidential ambitions. But Dick’s not done.

Today we discover that the former Democratic House leader is going to lead Big Coal into battle with the Democratic congress in an effort to block mandatory CO2 caps.

Check out this press release (spotted by Brad Plumer):

“Peabody Energy, the world’s largest private sector coal company, has hired Dick Gephardt’s firm to spearhead its drive to defeat efforts by Democrats to put caps on carbon emissions in a bid to combat global warming.”

May history treat you harshly, Dick.

Next in the crosshairs is Iran? I hope so!

Let the draft suck in the loud-mouthed conservative 18-24 demographic.

Forced military service is the best way to make public opinion turn cold against a war.

Please Mr. President, reinstate the draft. It’s the only solution.

“May history treat you harshly, Dick.”

That will depend on who wins.

why would someone receive a blank check for promoting hate, the world does not quite make sense

DeezNutz | 4/9/2007, 2:53 pm EST

So, the Pres. has all the authority he needs to invade Iran and the American people get the shaft while the rich get richer. This is the way the government has been set up and changed to accomodate the needs of big business and a select few American blue-bloods. It makes perfect sense because we have an ignorant or misinformed public that doesn’t really care what goes on in their government. As long as Idol’s on at 7 and my fast food dinner isn’t cold I don’t have any problems. Oh, except abortion, gun control, stem cell research and any other lame issue that might help distract me even more from the real problems facing this country.

Sorry, I’m feeling bitter at the moment.

Im disapointed in Gephardt you can blame the democrats who gave bush every thing he wanted. i like this new congress better.

Jab | 4/9/2007, 8:34 pm EST

I really agree about the draft issue. Jon Stewart always says the best way to involve young people in politics is to enforce a draft.

Makes me really proud to say Gephardt’s from Missouri!

hazmaq | 4/10/2007, 2:11 am EST

What an incredible story! What a sad story. Never would have guessed Gephardt would flip so drastically.

This is just the tip of other stories lurking through the net right now about what the Dems are doing behind the scenes.

Like removing the Iran issue from the last Defense spending bill at the request of another special interest.
Like secretly supporting Bushs’ oil theft law in Iraq by putting it in as a benchmark before troops can be withdrawn.
Like Hillary and Obama, to name a few, voting with Republicans to continue the use of cluster bombs..specifically in civilian areas..by voting against Senator Feinsteins ammendment to stop them.
Like the Patriot Act.
Like the Bankruptcy Bill…

Although I’ll always be a lefty, those calling themselves ‘Moderates’, and/or Dems just playing each side against each other for their own personal gain have, over the last decade, castrated and skinned the Democratic Party into an unrecognizable and untrustworthy group of embedded cronies.

I’m almost too disgusted to vote next time.

Bruce Miller | 4/10/2007, 12:16 pm EST

Good grief, what war resolution are you reading? The 2002 war resolution was a bad idea, and Biden and Gephardt and all the other Democrats who voted for it were as wrong as the Republicans who supported it. And solid majority of Democrats in the House opposed it, the Senate Dems split evenly. Virtually every Republican member of Congress supported it.

But the resolution itself required two very specific conditions be met before Bush could invade Iraq. One was to show that there was no further option to deal with Iraq’s (non-existent) “weapons of mass destruction”. The other was that a definite connection be established betwee Saddam’s regime and Al Qaida (also non-existent), including specifically to the 9/11 attacks.

Despite the way the resolution has been used in partisan polemics, Bush actually *violated* that resolution when he invaded Iraq four years ago. John Dean – who has some experience in the area of Presidential misconduct – discusses this point at some length in his book “Worse Than Watergate”.

The vote was a bad idea because it helped Bush validate his invasion politically. But it did not authorize the actual decision that Bush made when he invaded. And it certainly did not authorize preventive invasions of Iran or any other country.

DeezNutz | 4/10/2007, 12:35 pm EST

Bruce-The president basically does have a blank check when it comes to foriegn policy. It’s all in cryptic writing in the so-called, Patriot Act.

Jab | 4/10/2007, 4:25 pm EST

hazmaq,
It’s nice to hear from a liberal who doesn’t swallow what the Democrats throw their way. It seems many “lefties” will jump on any bandwagon marked liberal. Same story with conservatives.

Yeah, Bruce, I’m with DeezNutz on the resolution issue. It may not be explicitly written within the document, but Bush does possess carte blanche authority abroad. One reason I appreciate Pelosi’s recent diplomatic actions, despite harboring some inexplicable dislike for the woman. Cheney’s the kind of man who can get shit done, unfortunately, he’s only concerned with cutting oil deals while he should be trying to keep peace in the Middle East.

vote lik roper in 2008! | 4/10/2007, 9:59 pm EST

it’s all dick’s fault!

Who needs a timetable......? | 4/11/2007, 2:28 pm EST

There’s no argument here. The president DOES have the authority to do whatever he wants in the name of ‘terrorism’. As far as a timetable for getting out of Iraq: As soon as the western oil deals are signed, Bush will be on to Iran. Yes, this will happen before the next elections. At that point, the new President (whatever that even means anymore) will have multiple wars (part of PNAC’s statement of principles) to deal with. I use the Costanza theory in dealing with Bush. Whatever he says is true, the opposite is reality. Whatever he does, it’s the opposite that should be done. Remember this, also: Only 2.5 out of 10 people nationally agree with him on policy. How is it that a minority that small can get away with anything they want???

At times, debate and even analysis seem superfluous. At such times, I just utter the bedrock truth of it all.

“First Laura, now us!”
