“There are four or five generals and admirals we know of who would resign if Bush ordered an attack on Iran. There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible.”

I assume these Generals would ask for court martials if any of there soldiers decided to go against there orders.
Bonogamy | 2/27/2007, 12:16 am EST
Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction and posed no threat to the United States, yet Bush invaded anyway. The world should fear Bush more than Ahmadinejad or Kim Jong Il. Bush is a Christian fundamentalist sociopath who invades sovereign nations. How is he any less dangerous than an Islamic fundamentalist? Oh, right, because Christianity is good and Islam is bad. Yet Bush is the only leader among the three who has illegally invaded a sovereign nation.
In fact, at no time in history did the regime of Saddam Hussein pose a threat to the security or sovereignty of the United States. Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11. Yet Bush was able to convince a majority of the American people in 2003 (are you among them?) that invading Iraq was the right thing to do.
Now, the U.S. has a huge quagmire on it’s hands trying to keep the various factions in Iraq from killing each other and creating a leadership vacuum that would only be filled by another Saddam Hussein, not by democracy. It’s a tough job, and it will cost thousands of more American lives. All to secure oil reserves that do not benefit the people of Iraq any more than the oil dollars of Saudi Arabia help their ordinary citizens, which is none. All to increase America’s dependence on foreign oil when we should be decreasing our dependence.
Not that the people of Iraq will ever be allowed to vote in a way that displeases American interests. Hence, they have no democracy.
Unlike Iraq, Iran will fight back as one country with a proud, distinct, unified national identity, culture and religion. Civil war is not an issue for Bush’s proposed U.S. attack on Iran; the trouble will be convincing ordinary Iranians that they need to adopt American values and culture in order to stop American bombing (i.e. end the rule of Shia Islam, making Iran pro-western.)
Would you run into the arms of a country that bombs your house because you don’t believe as they do? It’s American hubris and imperialism at work. The generals know it will be a disaster that will be the final nail in the coffin of the American Empire. Too bad so many Iranian and American lives will be pointlessly lost (will you be among them?).
Just like Iraq, Bush won’t listen to the overwhelming chorus of dissent, and that’s why he’s a war criminal, and the most dangerous “world leader” right now.
Publius | 2/27/2007, 9:01 am EST
perhaps T, but intelligence seems to suggest that that majority of iranians, who are under 30, are intensely pro-western, and despise their regime
that said, this is all conjecture…we dont know how the iranian people would react…my proposal was merely an alternative to leveling the country
Ginnie | 2/27/2007, 9:22 am EST
Seriously Bush would not help anyone by going to war with Iran. First of all who are Iran buying weapons from? O ya china. Who does Iran have an allegiance with? O ya Iran. Going to war with Iran is basically saying hey why not have a World War III. Back in World War I, is the US was acting how it is now, we would have been Germany. Bush needs to stop picking fights with people and just retreat back to his dog whole. We are in no position to fight so what is the point unless we can give it all we got. And right now we could not give it anything because we are running on an empty tank of gas.
Won't happen | 2/27/2007, 1:52 pm EST
There’s no way Bush is going to invade Iran. What would it take to convince America to send troops to Iran at this point? Nothing short of a nuclear explosion in Cleveland, and a direct admission of guilt by the Iranian government. Obviously, that’s not going to happen.
Iran poses no threat to America, even with nuclear power, and I think that’s slowly seeping into the American consciousness.
The truth is, the neocons WANT to destabilize the Middle East. Could you imagine what would happen in the nations of the Middle East actually came together? With their wealth, work ethic and intelligence, a united Middle East would be a serious threat to America’s economic hegemony.
Poor Arabs… if only you’d learn from the Japanese: business is war, and it’s one you CAN win!
Hey Ginnie | 2/27/2007, 2:08 pm EST
Ginnie…
FYI – WWI had nothing to do with America. Americans only fought in it for 3 months. And for the majority of the war, America was neutral, and willingly supplied funds to all the warring sides.
The British wisely created a PR campaign to encourage America to join them. They exaggerated stories of German abuse in occupied Denmark. America stopped supplying munitions to Germany but continued to supply the UK and France. Germany, rightly so, considered that an act of war against them, and informed America that any ships delivering supplies to Europe were to be considered enemy combatants. A German U-Boat struck the Cruise Ship Lucitania because they believed the Lucitania was carrying military cargo. This created a bloodlust in the American people similar to the one we witnessed following 9-11. And America established it’s first intercontinental military.
France is widely considered by historians to be the most country most guilty of igniting the tensions that ultimately led to WW1.
Jed Clampett | 2/27/2007, 5:15 pm EST
Here’s a tidbit of news that seems to have gotten lost to the american media markets but is being broadcast all over latin america.
That fence being built south of the border is 10 meters too far south in places. A simple mistake? Perhaps, but in an age of GPS and digital cartography one has to wonder if such a negligent mistake is truly a mistake.
Dr. Ralph | 2/27/2007, 8:16 pm EST
Yeah Jed, and the funny part is Mexico wants to bust the fence builders for trespassing? Trespassing? They want to talk about trespassing? That’s about as funny as Spotted Al Gore telling me to be green when his electric bill is twenty times mine!
C U in Hell | 2/28/2007, 7:27 am EST
The generals hate America now too!
Fact | 2/28/2007, 10:19 am EST
Intellectuals in Iraq are abandoning the nation as over 1000 Iraqis flee Iraq every day.
Virtually everyone with an advanced education has left Iraq. Now it seems the only Iraqis left are the desperate and the misguided. Who is going to lead? Who is going to operate the national infrastructure? The universities are closed. There are no teachers, no students. It’s over.
Might as well pull the troops out and let the savages kill each other.
…oh… I forgot… we need their oil…
George Myers | 2/28/2007, 11:29 am EST
Before “Top Gun” we sold 80 F-14 Tomcats to Iran. 4000 Grumman employees (like Apollo 13) were in a compound for the Shah training them, but the students, who said to Kissinger they were being spied on by Savak while going to school in the US, which he said there was nothing he could do about, revolted before that I think could become 100 Tomcats. I was in the test pilots house for his birthday when it was announced that if the USSR made a move for the Iran border during the crisis the US would obliterate all Tomcats. I think they said it was over the air-to-air missiles, an expensive secret technology, the Tomcat truly a WMD, a fighter-bomber, it can acquire and deal with up to six targets at a time. It also had some problems and could fall out of the sky without another one being nearby I saw on Albany TV, footage presented by reporter Mr. Holbrook and subsequently Langley I think has made mods.
Word1 | 2/28/2007, 8:52 pm EST
First, anyone who thinks Bush will not attack Iran is kidding themselves. I’d bet money on this one.
Why is the story about the Bush administration indirectly funding Al Quaeda not reported in the media? This is the biggest story so far this year and one that could stop the Iran escalation in its tracks yet it is not reported. WHY?
If Clinton had pulled anything like this he would have been summarily beheaded on Fox News. The failure of the so-called “liberal media” to report this properly is even more breathtaking given the media’s lack of investigative journalism in the runup to Iraq. The same shit is happening over again. I cannot believe America is going to become this stupid again.

Dr. Ralph(?)
Think it’s been established that Gore’s using Green Electricity(using renewable or natural sources-wind and solar. You pay extra and the extra money goes into funding more solar power plants…(It’s a good thing-you do pay extra for it, hence, his high energy bill)…
God, help your patients, if you are actually a medical Dr.(Na, no way)…
More like a Doctored “Right-Wing”
Political- Propaganda -Distributor!
May a Spotted Owl(extinct, thanks to delusional administration supporters like you)leave you with a messy Souvenir!
Dr. Ralph | 3/1/2007, 10:38 am EST
Let Them Eat Cake even your name reminds me of Al and his mindset. Elitist to say the least, why aren’t you a Republican? Al is a multi-millionaire who’s family has been in Washington since 1939. I expect this kind of detachment from someone who’s reality is limousines and $30,000 energy bills but you should know better. Al is a consumer whore all the while preaching about virtue and it just doesn’t work. If you’re going to talk the talk you’d better walk the walk. Does he really need a heated pool? Hell it was in the seventies here in Nashville yesterday. Oh and the carbon offsets Gore buys? He’s the chairman of the company he buys them from…sweet! Go back to your personal attacks, they hold more water than your logic. Now that’s an inconvenient truth.
Dr. Ralph | 3/1/2007, 10:47 am EST
P.S. Spotted owls are listed as threatened just below vulnerable but above endangered as of 3/1/07. More liberal BS spewed by Marie Antoinette. Get your facts right.
Jed Clampett | 3/1/2007, 3:02 pm EST
well doc, of all the watching of the mexican news outlets that I do to catch the news that american outlets won’t even touch, I haven’t seen one talk seriously about charging the builders as trasspassers, perhaps some wingnut(left or right) politicos trying to stir up shit like the repubes do here, but no one in a position to do anything of value, such as government.
Not to get into a conversation that isn’t mine but… good to see that you started calling Cake by the name I used for her a few posts back. I don’t think you would have ever made the connection on your own. Did you stop to think that her choice of moniker was a sarcastic statement on how the Extremist Republicants view the rest of the population?
Dr. Ralph | 3/2/2007, 4:41 pm EST
Yeah Jed I heard it on the BBC. Supposedly Mexico’s Congress (didn’t even know they had one) is condemning the trespass by U.S. workers. And of course I know about the starving peasants who have no bread, but the reality is Antoinette never uttered those words, she spoke French anyway! I don’t think the nickname is sarcastic in any way. Right in line with most left-wing thought. They don’t have a clue about what’s really going on and want to give everybody everything! Let them have health care is the modern Marie’s cry. So what’s the story with your handle? Own a few oil wells or just don’t fit in?
Word 1 | 3/3/2007, 12:10 am EST
” They don’t have a clue about what’s really going on and want to give everybody everything! Let them have health care is the modern Marie’s cry.”
Hey doc, you must be practicing 16th century medicine when you criticize what the majority of Americans want (hello dark ages!). You also must be acting as the non-intelligent shit you are when you try to change the subject from the fact that your party is FUNDING AL QUADEA.
No wonder people want high malpractice claims in this country: people like you fuck them up. You should have your license revoked you sad sack of pathetic shit.
Let Them Eat Cake | 3/3/2007, 3:52 pm EST
Go after me all you want-you are just avoiding your “Great Leader’s” Corrupt and Crumbling Regime’s Scandals…
Nitpik away, Ace-are Spotted Owls extinct/was it Antionette who made a statement-No addressing the Real Issue, Roger Republican…
Gore, along with many weathly Democrats, represents all the Nation and not just The Perpetual Tax- Cut Junkies that flock like vultures, to the Republican Party.
He and other Democrats have been against the Iraq Oil-/War before it was started just a glint in cheney/Bush’s collective $eye, has been a champion of the enviorment for years before it was “fashionable” and, have voted for legislation to help workers, the poor, public education, real support of the military(not just lame flag-waving), etc…
Gore, Clinton and, the Kennedy’s have done alot to Represent the working people of our Country(the foundation of our Country) and, have attempted to pass legislation that would protect the common man and not, just the pander to the Elite…
You are the Me, Me, Mine Group…
You wave Flags but ignore the Bush mistreatment and misappropriation of funding that has robbed our troops of adequate supplies and medical care…
The survivors of Katrina still await those One-hundred billion of Tax-Payer monies that the Bush “administration” seem to make appear in wealthy business constituents pockets..but disappear from FEMA/Military/Social Security/Health Care/Workers Benefits/Pensions/Public Education…
And, Marie was married to a King who blatantly disregarded the fact that his Constituents were starving and suffering…
The Aristocracy were too busy socializing and avoiding the pleas of the people, and the statement may have been made by anyone of that Day-but the statement has been attributed to her-could have been her husband-the demeanor and arrogance pf the Elite then, only made it a reality, just as Our current “King” is doing now…
Lots of Photo-Ops yesterday and today for Bush…Hugs and kisses, now…(Where’s the money? Where did it go?)
I am not a Republican because I detest what they stand for…
We are talking Now, guy!
The statement is attributed to Marie Antoinette, though it could have been made from any of the aristocracy of that time…
You Repubes are so adept in pointing out what You Term as Technical Flaws but, Miss, Deliberately, the Gist of the Message…(It’s too Graphic and reveals the Criminality of your Regime-the greed, the insane lust for power and control)…
So, enjoy those nice plump Tax Breaks, it’s off the backs of the working people of this Country and the soldiers who are suffering and dying in Iraq….(They are forfeiting their benefits/wages/health care for the likes of you!)………..$$$$$$$$$ $
Slop up those filthy little Tax Breaks, now…(Wallow in it like the Oil Execs and Halliburton CEOS-doesn’t oil Rise From The Depths and like Drudge, containing filth and slime and sludge?)From Hell it comes…
Toodles…..(No worry, these Repube Apologists never want to get the real message, they are too busy licking their chops with their never-satisfied thick tongues and how much is rolling in$$$$$$$$$$)…
You have to be the most Out Of Touch and uncaring Bush/Republican Sycophant to Avoid what a Disaster Bush and his Regime are….No Excuse…
Dr. Ralph | 3/4/2007, 10:54 am EST
Damn cake, even when you’re wrong and you know you’re wrong and someone points out why you’re wrong you continue to argue with even more and longer comments with plenty of passion but no facts. Typical dumbocrat. Gore represents all the nation? Then why did only the people living in concrete jungle hell megalopolis USA vote for him? Red staters are the nation, blue staters are naive cubicle dwelling city rats. Actually a majority of the dems in the Senate voted to go to war with Iraq. Gore, having no office, had no vote. Voting yea to the war were Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, John Edwards, Diane Feinstein, John Kerry, Joe Leiberman, Charles Shumer and all your presidential hopefulls who had a vote. Gore said he did believe there were WMD’s. As far as his eco-bull stance, it’s just another way to grab more power. I prefer to not have an out of touch gazillionaire who grew up in a Washington D.C. hotel tell me how to save power when he’s jetting all over the country in private planes. Hey Al, take a commercial flight and save the rainforest! Tax breaks? People like me making over $100,000 paid almost 70% of the income tax paid. That’s 10% paying 70%! And one third of all workers pay no income tax. Hell, the least successful half of wage earners paid less than 4%. That’s right half the people who work paid only 4% of all the money Uncle Sam spent! And guess who he spent it on? See? You’re getting smarter all the time Qu’ils mangent de la brioche…
Word 1 | 3/4/2007, 1:39 pm EST
“Dr” Ralph,
Aw. Complaining about how much taxes you have to pay. Such a greedy doctor. No wonder med costs are so high in this country: inefficient greedy moronic doctors such as yourself. And discounting global warming is just evidence of how untrustworthy you are. I feel bad for your patients; you obviously don’t.
Let Them Eat Cake | 3/5/2007, 12:48 am EST
Some of the “Wealthy” people I know(Understand, only from a distance)don’t pay much taxes at all.
It is the middleclass that are handling that burden, Ralph!
The “Elite” have too many loopholes and attorneys/accountants/Right-le aning Presidents to advise them on how to Cheat out of it…
There are many wealthy celebreties who are paying their fair share, because, they actually, have a conscience and realize how VIP the Infra-Structure of our Nation, Is……………
Sick of whiney wealthy complaining about taxes-give lots of your money to the poor and do something Real with your lives….
Vote, with a conscience, for those who are too beaten-down, ill, old to defend or help themselves(Could be you, after another twenty/thirty years of Republican Rule)….
Let Them Eat Cake | 3/5/2007, 3:01 am EST
Ralphie-
You blather on about the “wonderful conservatives” who always bring disaster when they have power …
Tell us how much electricity Bush/Cheney/Rice/ etc. use…What have they done besides destroy our Country, to do their share..(Whoops, maybe Bush has the lights turned off by seven-we know he dosen’t do lots of “midnight reading” oil-burning…
And M. Antoinette, did not utter, “Let them eat cake” in a sarcastic/angry mode….But, in a Stupid/Out-Of-Touch Frame of Mind-You know, Ralph, just like The Bush’s and their wealthy friends…
One of the servants informed the Country’s leaders the people were starving-”They had no Bread”…
Someone(Marie/her husband/aristocracy)told the servant to “Let Them Eat Cake”….No bread, no food-Smart advice….Make some nice cake-”Out of What?” Praytell…
Like Bush, Sr. when he had to debate Clinton and could not come up with any figure in the pre-election debate-as to what a family might spend weekly/monthly/anyway for groceries…
Very Out of Touch with The Commoners…(Like Barbara’s comments to reporters re.Katrina survivors at the AstroDome, “This has worked out well for them”)…
Oh, yeah!
No concern/clue for what Reality is for the majority of the Country…
Dr. Ralph | 3/6/2007, 9:02 pm EST
Cake, Antoinette was not so out of touch as you may think. In the seventeen hundreds French bakeries had a habit of producing too many expensive pastries for the rich and not enough bread to sustain the poor. A law was passed by Marie’s husband telling the bakeries that if they ran out of bread they had to sell the high dollar stuff for the same low price as the bread. Thus “let them eat cake” made perfect sense to a teenage queen. And as far as your mantra about rich docs goes I’m stuck in the middle too. Too poor to find all those loopholes Bush and Cheney have but too rich to avoid supporting everyone without a job. All the money goes to the insurance execs anyways. Health care IS fucked and the government is not the answer. Go to school for twenty years and you’d cry too…

How much energy Bush uses is irrelevant since he is not the one running around saying that the world is going to end because of our energy use, chicken little is, so he should practice what he preaches. But the problem is he does not beleive his own bullshit, but knows the liberal environuts will, and they are to stupid to see his hypocrisy.
Let Them Eat Cake | 3/8/2007, 1:08 am EST
Like Bush’s Pap about”The country is safe and secure” under Republican Rule, many of the constituents ended up starving-something lost in translation with the bakers and the peasants…
Just like Current Times, Ralphie…
Words and Actions are two different things…You sound just like Bush-The French did not have a Revolution because they were being helped-thousands died of starvation….

Don’t get too bitter about the “doctor,” he’s just pissed he has to pay taxes. C’mon doc, realize it’s better this way: you don’t want a bunch of starving american poor to lop your head off with a guillitine do you?

At this point, we’re gonna have to depend on the generals to revolt against reckless White House leadership. I just read today the Democrats whimped out, and stripped from their version of the military spending bill the provision that Bush would have to consult Congress about any possible attack on Iran.
Nothing’s changed. All that hope we felt post-Nov.6 has already evaporated. I guess we shouldn’t feel surprised.
Let Them Eat Cake | 3/17/2007, 12:49 am EST
It is relevant how much energy Bush uses and his fellow Republican felons…
The idiot is destroying the environment-Gore has done everything to wake people up about it…
