The Democratic Dividend

1/18/07, 4:19 pm EST

It’s hardly just begun, but let’s review for a second the rather stunning impact of the Democratic congressional takeover. Not all of these advances have been won through legislation, but it’s safe to say none of them would have happened without the ballance provided by a Democratic House and Senate.

  • Rumsfeld’s gone.
  • Bush has backtracked on his warantless domestic spying, placing the extra-legal NSA program under the watchful eye of the FISA courts.
  • You can now apply to be removed from the government’s No-Fly list.
  • Chuck Hagel is openly clashing with Condi Rice on the war, in Senate hearings demanded by Democrats.
  • Legislation to address the climate crisis is on the docket.
  • The House has increased the Minimum Wage, decreased costs of Rx drugs bought by the government, sliced the interest on student loans, beefed up air-cargo security, implemented new ethics rules, and is about to revoke corporate welfare to the oil companies.

Not bad for three months after election day.

What else am I overlooking?

Heard this morning that there are over 100 investigations into the waste of money in Iraq.

Who knows, we may come to our senses and impeach this bunch before they turn Iraq into a worse disaster. we can only hope i guess. It’s up to congress.

Tom | 1/18/2007, 7:35 pm EST

I hate you Jed Clampett

Roland | 1/18/2007, 8:59 pm EST

What else are you forgetting? You’re forgetting that just last week you chiding the Democrats for not doing enough about minimum wage and implying that they did this so they could look good in another 12 years when they take over again. You seem to talking (or typing) out of both sides of your mouth, sir. Maybe you will remember this the next time you try to make a cheap joke at the well-intentioned politicians’ expense. Why? Because you’re credibility is at stake.

Jed Clampett | 1/18/2007, 9:01 pm EST

NO I don’t think the guys in control of congress are clean. Those huge corporations are the main reason we got hit on sept. 11 precisely because of how dirty they are. Look at the minimum wage bill, why did they make an exception for starkist? Evidently it isn’t the people that control congress. It definately isn’t those folks that are being given millions for their campaigns by large industries. Do those corporations give that money out of the kindness of their hearts and a respect for the ‘democratic process’? I hardly think so. It’s an investment and they expect a return on that investment.

You want solutions, first of all take private industry money out of politics. Make $5 out of everyone’s tax return go to a public election fund to be equally distributed among candidates. Force local tv station to give equal time to politicians trying to be elected, giving them a tax exemption for for their time lost in advertising. And make the penalties for corruption be steep enough that these people won’t even think of doing it. Make it illegal to make false or misleading statements during a campaign that disparages the opponent. If you can’t run on your own merits rather than just by smearing the opponent you shouldn’t be running.

Why would I worry more about that country’s problems, I live here, this is my home, this is where I vote. The stupid policies of our ‘leaders’ affect me as well. And when the sleeper cells living among us get activated and start killing people in a way reminiscent of a Chuck Norris movie I will also be trying to keep out of the fray.

Rolling Stone’s National Affairs Daily blog, while well intentioned, usually re-caps or even just links to the news from other sources, with perhaps a question-to-think-on from Mr. Dickinson thrown in. This would be OK except that anonymous unrated comments practically ensure that there will be no discussion of substance in the comment section.

Let Them Eat Cake | 1/19/2007, 3:47 am EST

Tom,
You are Seriously Wrong!
History will remember the 2 term mess an unelected “President” brought upon our Country, Iraq and, all the death and destruction that occurred on his Watch…

Bush has morphed into Baby Hitler and is Out to Conquer the World.

He and his looney followers live in the Land of Delusion, Denial and, Deceit…

Corruption, Division and, Arrogance will be Bush’s “Legacy”…

As we Post, Bush/Rove/Cheney are doing their “Best” to start a war with Iran, Syria and,God knows where, to make themselves feel Ruleresque and to Pad the Pockets of more Halliburton’s and Exxon’s…

Russia isn’t amused and anyone and everyone could see this lust for Power, Control and, Riches to Bloom into World War III and Everyone will be Wiped Away…
(Maybe the Infamous Trio(The Current Three Stooges) have a Planet they are Aiming to Live On
Or they are already on it-Dementia-2007!

Somebody Help Us, Pleeeaaase!

Dr. Ralph | 1/20/2007, 10:57 am EST

Damn Jed, we need to start a third party. Big business and big money already control Demo’s and Repub’s. The big change when the Senate and House changed hands? The checks went to the DNC instead of the RNC. Why won’t anyone jump on the Libertarian bandwagon? If RS would quit kissing the Donkey’s ass maybe it would open our youth’s eyes. Maybe not.

Mark | 1/20/2007, 12:14 pm EST

All my life, as far as politcal parties have been concerned, I have voted middle of the road…for the man, or woman, who I mostly agreed with, but NOW?? I don’t like the Republicans OR the Democrats! They are both a joke! I totally agree with you, Dr. Ralph. I’m going Libertarian from now on! Bush has made far too many mistakes and poor judgements, everything from the wars to illegal immigration, and well, let’s just say that Nancy Pelosi should go back to raising her grandchildren and forget about politics! She’s way too partial…..to herself and her OWN interests!

Capitalist Pig | 1/21/2007, 10:57 am EST

Jed Clampett – You actually for once make some sensible points, however you assertion that big corporations were to blame for 9/11 is ridiculous. But ignoring that point, the whole thing about money in politics is a problem. But you fail to include the labor unions in with all those corporations, the AFL-CIO pumps millions into the democrat party, and it sure as hell is not to help the American worker. Taking money out of politics is not going to be an easy row to plow. The Supreme Court has already ruled that political donations by such groups is protected under the First Amendment. That creates a major roadblock to any reform, assuming the politicos would pass any meaningfull reforms, which I doubt they would do (it’s the whole “don’t bite the hand that feads” syndrome).

And Jack D is right. If Jed is a legal resident he has the right to voice his opinion.

Let Them Eat Cake | 1/21/2007, 11:46 pm EST

The Party Fighting “Ethics Reform” is your Rightie Republicans, they are trying to add the Line Item Veto for Bush and tack it to the “Ethics Reform” bill.

They are the ones of have consistently tried to water-down any Political Reform-and we still have the soul-sucking lobbyists out to bribe politicians to throw their votes the way they tell them to(Disaster for all of us)…

McCain’s Robot compliance to Bush, has just sucked-it up and slithered away, and the bill he and Goldfein created is useless…

Rove, Cheney and, Bush must have horrific blackmail info, threaten the careers out from under the politicians and, have added mountains of Corruption to the already Corrupted Washington….

Jed Clampett | 1/22/2007, 2:21 am EST

It wasn’t my assertion, it was Bin Laden’s in his declaration of war, where he said it was due to america’s foreign policy and support for brutal totalitarian regimes in direct contravention of what our constitution stands for, expressed through our corporations and in the way they deal with the poor in those countries.

Jed Clampett | 1/22/2007, 3:08 am EST

IF jed is a legal citizen?
What if I told you I’m a naturalized citizen? would you have trouble believing someone born in another country could be a US citizen?

No I would not and it was not intended to imply such. But if you wish to create an argument out of one of the few times I agree with you (mostly), so be it.

Jed Clampett | 1/22/2007, 10:10 pm EST

seems to me those among those inalienable rights is the right to liberty, to me that says anyone has the right to speak their mind, short of inciting violence or armed overthrow of the gov.
I always thought that was the promise of america, seems we are reneging on yet another promise, not only to the world, but also to ourselves.

C Co... aka I Smell Propaganda | 1/24/2007, 8:16 pm EST

The minimum wage increase is bad on a couple of fronts. One, it means a lot of small and medium size businesses are going to have to fire workers that they can no longer afford (it’s not like small and up-start businesses have a lot of extra money laying around to pay for workers doing jobs anyone can do). There was a proposal to give tax breaks to these small businesses, but the Congress said, “Nope”.

Secondly, this will encourage even more outsourcing. If it was already too expensive for some businesses to run in the US, even more are going to jump on boats across seas.

What’s being lost in this whole thing is this: you can’t help a worker if they can’t get a job.

Dr. Ralph | 1/25/2007, 2:23 pm EST

Come on now, everyone with a three digit I.Q. knows the minimum wage hike is an incentive for employers to hire illegal (read Mexican) workers and pay under the table. More immigrant workers = More Democrat voters. The equation is simple and the logic sound. And to think I call them Dumbocrats.

Dr. Ralph | 2/1/2007, 4:11 pm EST

Jed, you are not in my shoes. Tennessee has been giving illegal immigrants driver’s licenses “in order to make our streets safer”. We also have a program called motor voter in which you are able to register to vote when you receive your license. They are voting, they are sending all OUR money back to their home country and they are ruining the construction industry as it is impossible to compete with illegals working for sub-par wages and employers who are paying under the table and not matching withholding taxes or paying Workman’s Comp which now is about 29 dollars per 100 paid in order to offset the illegal contractors. Workman’s Comp has skyrocketed for legitimate contractors to pay the insane medical expenses not paid by illegals hurt on the job without the benefit of insurance.

Jed Clampett | 2/1/2007, 8:07 pm EST

seems to me you are targeting the wrong people. They are merely looking to work and feed their families back home. They send money they’ve earned through hard work and indignity of being payed less than half of what the job should be paying. They barely have an education to tell what the words on the license means and you try to say it should be their responsability to make sure hte laws are followed correctly? Makes little sence. Look, if anyone should be made to pay for the immigration problem it is those people that take advantage of them by paying them so low, avoid paying their taxes, and don’t do the prerequisite witholding for medicaid that would help pay for those peoples health care. Truth is, it would be pretty easy to spot the culprits through their finances, the problem is, it isn’t being done. With the fines levied against violators you could fund more inspectors. Pays for itself and when employers notice how dangerous it is to hire illegals, they won’t hire them anymore and they’ll go home except for the few entrepreneurs. you right wingers love those so it should be ok.

Dr. Ralph | 2/1/2007, 11:09 pm EST

Fine by me. Target those that employ illegals. Don’t forget all the politicians with maids, gardeners, houseboys, and kitchen help. Just enforce the damn laws! I’m still tired of pressing 1 for English every time I call my bank.

Let Them Eat Cake | 2/2/2007, 11:31 pm EST

The biggest blow to fight “Corruption” for the Dems. is to tackle the FCC.

The same Right-Wing Corporate Criminals own and control the “Media” and the Fantasy they peddle is slipping further rightie all the time.

Check out the anchors, hosts that are on most of the networks.

“O’Really?”, Beckless, Carlson(did he swallow his BowTie?), Matthews, Scarborough, Blitzer, (anyone at FOX), Couric, Gibson, etc.

When Liberals get their two to five minute spots(Guesting)they are edited down, not allowed to complete sentences, and by the time they have “guested” on a semi-regular basis, they have diluted their own political beliefs to continue being “aired”!

Censored news results in Fascism and Boy do we have it…

Stewart, Colbert, sometimes, Olbermann have their licks but, it is getting difficult and the Conservatives offer the “PERKS” via corporate and the White House…

Monopolies need to Go.

The FCC needs to be cleaned out just as the White House does…They both Reek…

The Democrats will never get fair political coverage or stop the disgusting slant to the right until they Investigate and Clean the Media Up…(Same for newspapers/magazines)….

O r, we could end up with more Sell-Outs(Republican Bushdum) and the Game is Done…

It will take a David and Goliath Moment to go after the Giants of Corruption and it will take some Real Heroes and Sacrifice….

Palmerblade | 3/25/2007, 4:38 pm EST

You are overlooking castrated Liberal males led by a woman. And the laughing stock of the country with backroom fights with jane Harman and the other Dems.

Nancy, your 15 minutes is up.
