Israel. Lebanon. Iraq. Afghanistan. Iran. Syria. How Will It Play In November?

7/27/06, 2:02 pm EST

Political Handicapper Charlie Cook raises a question that’s been on my mind since the opening of a third mideast war front:

In 2002 and 2004, in the first midterm and presidential elections after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the security issue unquestionably helped President Bush and the Republican Party. To many voters, Bush symbolized a steady and determined hand at the helm of the ship of state. And his party also benefited from having long been more trusted than the Democrats on national security.

So, will national security issues again work to the advantage of the GOP this fall, or has that well run dry for the party?

Cook has his own theory. What do you think?

Well’s run dry, plain and simple. The GOP- or, at least, their beloved child-president- has botched up National Security so badly, it’ll be a wonder if it doesn’t negatively impact the GOP’s attempt to remain in power.

It should run dry but the people of this country to pay much attention to what should be done. Most people are still in a state of fear and apathy that has allowed the patriot act to be renewed, domestic wiretapping to go unpunished and Bush and the Republicans to do pretty much anyhting they want. Unfortuantly I do not have faith in the Average American, or atleast the Average American voter to do the logical and intelligent thing.

You talk about National Security JamesC… Imagine if John Kerry was President: we would probably have an open border with Mexico because he doesn’t want to offend any Hispanics. You can put into question Bush’s planning and choices, but he’s always tried to do the best thing he felt to try and make this country safe as far as National Security goes. It’s his main priority. At least he cares enough to make a stand and do something, unlike any Democrat who’s challenged him.

Most American Jews and Israelis of my acquaintance are praying that neither the U.S. nor Israel will go to war with Iran. That’s partly due to self-interest. American and Israeli Jews know that they will be scapegoated if there’s war. It’s also because most of these folks would like us all to live in peace, including a fair sharing of land, legitimacy and power between the Israelis and the Palestinians. One of them said to me, “Instead of wrecking havoc on the live of so many Lebanese, it would have been better to nab a few Hezbollah fighters and work an exchange of prisoners.” Of course, ordinary golks, in whatever country, have little to nothing to say about what their governments do.

The Democrats’ problem isn’t their “soft” policies on National Security (ie. John Lieberman). Because let’s face it, that was basically all Republican-conspired propaganda. The Dems want to prevent future 9/11s just like everyone else. They just can’t do it under a united front (someone needs to tell Howard Dean to stfu). There’s no rally the troops cry among liberals. When they’re not bickering among themselves, they’re whining about the Republican party, which doesn’t exactly improve party image. So until someone slaps some unity into the Democratic party, the country will continue to view the Republicans as the tough guys whether they want to or not.

I do have faith in the American voters to do the swift and correct thing at the polls-my problem is with the Republican officials who have conspired to cheat their candidates in thru Diebolds/by giving out incorrect polling times and addresses info/tossing out hundreds of thousands of valid ballots if they happen to represent the Democratic opposition.

We obviously need voter supervision from Sweden or the U.N.(Just to make sure the Republican political officals do not take hundreds of thousands of ballots home for “safekeeping” or out of loneliness(?) or invalidating by mismarking…..

Right now it’s lookin Third-World Shady-Shabby chic until the Republicans are “persuaded” to allow the voting process to go on without their..ah..interference(cheati ng)..

“c-co”

Corporate?

Since when did Bush”try and do the best thing to make this country safe as far as National Security”?

Very exact pre-9/11 warnings were ignored by Bush and his administration, new tapes of conversations during 9/11 find many faults with Bush and his “safety” practices.

The mishandling of Katrina and the unqualified Bush appointees does not bode well for providing a “safe national security system” period….”Homeland Security”(?)

Disagree with your comments re. Bush and his policies re. NS…..

More people need to acquaint themsleves with articles related to Bush policies, failures, etc….

Wow, would I like to imagine Kerry as President(He most likely was voted in but with Bush pals “fixing” Ohio)Americans ended up with a lemon, again….

Kerry had the intelligence to listen to Intelligence and, he would have been able to figure out Iraq was not teeming with WMDS and terrorists and finished the mission to get bin Laden-not give his family plane tickets out of our country..

Now Iraq is filled with terrorists-post Bush…Mr. Botch It…..

How to go out of your way to down-play peace negotiations but do oodles for making wars where there shouldn’t be. Just ask Rumsfeld, Cheney and, Bush…$$$$$

people talk about the GOP , what about clinton, he never had time to challenge osama bin laden and the islamist , all he had time for was for his cocked to be sucked by the white house intern much less time to see what Iran, Iraq and north Korea was doing .when Osama bin laden with shit network Blew up the embassies all he did was send a couple of missguided cruise missiles and end of story , when they attempted to blow up the Trade centre first all they did was Jail a blind bat and forget about the network(Islamist) that orchestrated the whole work, end of story.I would strongly urge Mr Bush to continue keeping tabs on all of them and strike them at will , forget the fucking UN , they are Islamic Sympathizers and forever will be.
