Voting Rights Act Clears House

7/13/06, 9:53 pm EST

Thanks to Democratic efforts to quash all amendments and revisions, the House has overwhelmingly passed a 25-year extension of the Voting Rights Act. Bilingual Ballots? Check. Federal oversight over voting practices in the Deep South? Check.

Good news in a day that desperately needed some.

Agree with your statement(”GoodNews”) but we need a paper trail on the voting machines, laws that will be enacted to prevent political officials from taking machines “home” with them and, enforced laws to prevent the Republicans from sending out faulty information on times polls open and close, dates of the election, valid addresses where the polling place is, no threats that “one can’t vote if their rent isn’t paid”, no tossing out hundreds of thousands of valid ballots, no double marking ballots that make them invalid or, hiding absentee ballots so that they are not found-until long after voting deadlines….

We do need an international committee to oversee “election day practices”….

Since Bush, lots of “Firsts” when it comes to “campaigns” and “election practices”….
