Psst! How Bout That Al Gore? Shame He Isn’t Running. Or Is He?

5/31/06, 6:34 pm EST

The resuscitation of Al Gore will go down as one of the great, positive whisper campaigns of all time. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Here’s a man who only six months ago the whole media world was still deriding as the unhinged formerly wooden politician turned MoveOn firebrand who’d abandoned politics to head up a wonky/quixotic cable TV venture.

Now we’ve got Al Gore. The SNL-funny, self-effacing, deadly serious public citizen, whom everyone and their blog is clamoring for to run against Hillary in 2008.

Gore is fanning the flames of devotion perfectly, ruling out a presidential run one day, only to leave open the slightest possibility the next, all the while riding the massive wave of publicity stirred by his controversial global warming film. People take Gore and his movie seriously because he’s not running for anything. Meanwhile the populist outcry for the man who won in 2000 to give it another go is approaching a fever pitch.

Before you know it Al Gore, the “Comeback Kid” becomes Al Gore, “Back by Popular Demand.”

Let’s get real. This is a masterful PR campaign, and if it keeps up Gore will be the candidate to beat in the 08 primary.

I hope every ROLLING STONE reader will see the movie, buy the book and then begin to implement PERSONAL STRATEGIES that will support the overall efforts to change this cris!

I saw Gore (luckily) over the weekend streaming LIVE from a GuardianUK site. This and his Martin Luther King Day 2006 fiery speech to take back America has made him my 2008 candidate of choice! Yeah, he’s not running, but if the world needs him the UNIVERSE will make it happen that he’ll be our candidate.

During the conference he was asked a number of questions, but the most important thing he said in my opinion, is that he has the oil people doing a whisper campaign that we need oil to drive our cars AND be ready for your local TV ads from BIG OIL, mega-giants… they’re pushing against the global warming talk. Let them talk and keep moving forward by talking to your friends and family and getting them to the movie! He also said that it’s important for us to educate ourselves, implement personal changes and become his voice in your community.

I’m seeing the movie on the 9th and getting the book this weekend so I can read it before I see the movie.

This is real folks and it should be a KEY issue in the 2006 and 2008 campaigns.

John A | 6/1/2006, 6:07 am EST

I hope Al Gore doesn’t run because frankly, he’s a menace to liberalism and GOP strategists will tear him apart as an environmental extremist.

His film is a concatenation of propaganda clips and bad science. The Inconvenient Truth is that Al Gore is not Presidential material.

Capitlist Pig | 6/1/2006, 7:08 am EST

I hope he does run. That will gurantee another 4years of Repulicans in the White House. The real inconvient truth is global warming is nothing but leftist bullshit. The new communism.

Marc Johnson | 6/1/2006, 9:06 am EST

Al Gore is doing his part to cut down on Green House gasses.

I think you should all do the same. Start driving small cars, turn down the heat, eat raw, don’t shave, cut out showers, build a compost, read in the dark . . .

Al Gore would be happy knowing that we are doing this while he is riding around the world buring millions of gallons of green house creating fuel.

Al Gore – Shame on you.

Anonymous | 6/1/2006, 10:57 am EST

Frank Rich on Don Imus’ show this morning read a passage from an Al Gore speech made just before the invasion of Iraq. Gore was asking, what is the plan after regime change? How will you protect the peace?

Where is that speech?

The public is coming around to acknowledge that Gore was probably right about the environment. History has borne out his concerns for Iraq as well. The man is eminently compitent in policy making. Now more are recognizing that and beginning to recognize that competence is something you NEED in a president.

Andrew Riley | 6/1/2006, 11:42 am EST

Gore is a decent honorable man in an era of liars and charlatans. I hope he runs and wins with such a margin that they can’t steal it form him again.

David F | 6/1/2006, 11:53 am EST

Will Al Gore run for President in 2008? Who gives a shit, it’s not like he’ll win. Sure he’ll get the far left green vote who feel betrayed by Hillary’s pro-war stance, but the voters in the middle (the votes that really matter) and voters on the right will still remember him as Bill Clinton’s lapdog-turned-raving-lunatic-bombthrower. He’ll be lucky to beat Hillary in the primary and even if he does that, Giulliani or McCain will wipe the floor with him. Thank God!

Evan | 6/1/2006, 12:14 pm EST

Hey John A, you said “The Inconvenient Truth is that Al Gore is not Presidential material.”

Considering the fact that our current president (un)elect was and remains utterly unqualified for the job I find your comment completly ironic and borderline idiotic.

Bushco. has lowered the bar so low to the dirt that even slightly corrupt candidates on either side of the aisle look like GREAT alternatives!

You lose.

Kristian | 6/1/2006, 1:12 pm EST

The sooner you liberals get guys like Howard Dean and Al Gore off the stage, the sooner you might have a chance of winning an election.

All they do is give the crazies in your party a voice, which then drives people in the middle to the Republicans.

And the sooner you let go of the fact you LOST THE LAST TWO ELECTIONS, the sooner you can create a strategy to win th enest one (see last two paragraphs).

Theo | 6/1/2006, 2:44 pm EST

I have already signed on to work for Al Gore 2008.
He is gonna run, and he is gonna win.
Why?
Because he is the most intelligent, and best informed guy out there. He has learned a HELLAVA lot since 2000…and it shows. He is not afraid ( and he is about the ONLY one…besides Jon Stewert and Steven Colbert)) to speak the truth.
I don’t know how many of you have heard the speeches he has given over the last few years…they are amazing…and he just called Bush a “right-wing extremist”. That alone is almost enough!!
And those of you you still support Bush…WHY? In God’s name….why??? This should not be all ablout politics…this is about the future for ALL of us…together.

Hodad | 6/1/2006, 2:52 pm EST

Howard Dean and Al Gore are crazies, Kristian? Good god, then what are Rick “Man on Dog” Santorum and Bill “I Can Diagnose Terri Scaivo by Videotape” Frist?

Groovester | 6/1/2006, 4:52 pm EST

Gore needs to run in ‘08. He won in 2000, and with Bush’s approval rating hovering around 29-30%, just means a lot of those who voted for bush in 2000 and 2004 definitely would not vote Republican in 2008. Dean would be a great running mate.

Kristian | 6/1/2006, 7:15 pm EST

Hate to break it to you guys, but Gore and Dean have played large roles in LOSING the last two pres. elections. They are also in the top 5 in terms of party recognition (people know they are democrats). That’s bad.

So why don’t you stop wankering about with those losers and attach your cart to a different democratic horse?

I don’t understand how music fans can support the Gores, especially when Tipper tried to ban rock’n roll.

Boomtown Gal | 6/1/2006, 7:51 pm EST

Gore is smart enough and experienced enough and DECENT enough to be President. But I hope he doesn’t run. What good changes have ever started at the Presidency? I think he has more power in society from the outside. And I’m glad to see him wielding it. He is our true leader, elected or not.

ryan | 6/1/2006, 8:19 pm EST

Gore? Cant stand him, he conceded the election without looking back, and he even ridiculed the black congressmen who tried to debat the fraud!!! wtf!! but realistically, hes better than kerry and hes better than clinton, so i hope to hell he runs, but really now, if any one with HALF a conscience (that being anyone who didnt just say on the forum that global warming is leftist propaganda, which is about as insane as saying so was the Holocaust), I would LITERALLY vote for YOU! so please god of YOU are listening , and are rich, and not a capitalist psycho, if YOU actually exist! please god almighty run!!!!!

Capitalist Pig | 6/1/2006, 10:03 pm EST

Ryan, you are an idiot. To say that someone who does not buy the global warming junk science is the same as not believing the holocaust is typical liberal bullshit. The same scientist predicting global were predicting an ice age back in the 90’s. Did they get that one right? God you people are fools.

Kristian | 6/2/2006, 1:26 am EST

Please do not make any comparisons between the Holocaust and global warming…its an insult to those of us who believe in fact and logic. The holocaust happened. Global warming? You can go down with that ship.

Hey CP, even though its a weak theory at best, doesn’t believing in global warming FEEL good??!!

Jaywillie | 6/2/2006, 2:18 am EST

Is it me or are all the Rightwing nutters who’ve posted on this thread all appropriately deranged and incoherent?

And to Capitalist Pig – how would you like him to travel? It’s not like Bush or Republicans are interested in promoting a legitimate alternative fuel source.

That would be leadership.

Sadly, we’re all finding out just how lacking Republicans are with regards to that quality.

Redsaint | 6/2/2006, 2:43 am EST

Al Gore did win the first time. He should have the White House in 08, maybe 8 years late but we can really use him now. He is proving he is concerned about issues that count, like the environment. Hey, what happened? In the 70s, Ecology was an important science in college and people actually majored in it. Gore is one of the few that have been talking about it all along. Go Gore.

Capitlist Pig | 6/2/2006, 7:07 am EST

Jaywille, why doesn’t he fly commercial and drive around in a Yugo? That is what he would have everyone else do.

Cassandro | 6/2/2006, 11:03 am EST

People can be so belligerent!
Gore has his faults, so does Dean.
Now let us look at their strengths.
Get beyond some stale old perceptions forced on you by the endless-loop media.
Look at the facts. Even the one scientist I know of who questions the EXTENT of human-caused global warming (Oregon’s climatologist) does not deny that we are altering the weather. As a person with a long-term view he THINKS it won’t be as severe as others project. He also says we should conserve and burn biodiesel because the oil we get largely comes from dictators (not you, Canada).
Point being: First, get paper ballots, like they have in Canada and count in a number of hours with excellent results. Second (and don’t start screaming until you hear them speak for themselves): Gore-Dean ‘08

andertone | 6/2/2006, 4:03 pm EST

Doesn’t matter if Gore (or any other
Democrat) runs anyway

The Diebold machines only recognize
Republican votes. And Ohio and Floria are rigged forever.

Rigged

The only way to have a fair election is to outlaw the machines.

He who owns the election machines owns the election.

Just ask Ken Blackwell

Fascists-R-Us | 6/2/2006, 4:08 pm EST

Ppl, ppl, the fact is CP & others like him are a breed of folks who show disdain for any ‘feel-good-do-right’ kind of things. They’ll label it Communism, or anti-American, & even better they’ll throw out disparging remarks for good measure…almost as if they’re auditioning for a Don Imus Show. While yes, equating the Holocaust & Global Warming is a bit of a reach, there is no doubt that there’s at the very least some concern, over our environment. I’d also argue that nothing spells “Bad American” than someone–namely some folks who’ve posted on this blog, who probably voted for Bush, they’re either a) defending their lack-of-informed decision making skills and b) are smarting a little because they have to answer to the rest of us who are now blaming them for the State-of-the-Union. Luckily despite whatever negative response fellow bloggers have to my comments; I still have to pay rent, still will feel appalled over American soldiers’ deaths in Iraq, know that Americans aren’t generally getting smarter, & I’ll still find our political system disingenuous.

Capitalist Pig | 6/2/2006, 7:57 pm EST

Fascist-R-US I don’t disdain people who do the right thing. I disdain people like you who claim they are doing good when they are doing nothing. Your idea of doing good is taxing people to promote your agenda, so you can feel good. Like the liberal war on poverty. An absolute failure. The liberal answer to any problem is throw money at it. Other peoples money, of course. Your touchy feelly liberalism is a bunch of shit. That is why you have to run to a Psuedo Religion like global warming, to feel important.

I did vote for Bush. He’s no Reagan, but alot better than the alternative. As for defending my very informed decision, I don’t have to defend anything to you. And I sure as hell don’t have to answer to you for anything, especailly the State of the Union. The Union with %4.7 umemployment, and a strong economy.

Marc Johnson | 6/3/2006, 12:48 am EST

The Democraps will always say that any election that they lose was stolen by the Republicans.

Face it!!! It’s impossible to steal an election when the outside LOST !!!

I hope you dwell on 2000 and 2004 when it comes to 2008. It will be nice to see you lose AGAIN !!!

BlindedByScience | 6/4/2006, 3:00 pm EST

See the movie, then let’s have an adult conversation about global warming.

Kristian | 6/5/2006, 8:22 pm EST

In all seriousness (and I pose this question to all Democrats), is there anyone else other than Gore/Dean you guys would like to see run for pres.??

Fascists-R-Us | 6/6/2006, 10:48 am EST

Dear Mr. Pig–ooops Capitalist Pig,
LOLOLOL! Bush is better than the alternative?!–who-Pol Pot, Stalin? a little facism goes a long ways these days. Global warming a “liberal conspiracy?” I guess the $92 million dollars that Exxon still has to dole out for the Valdez incident wasn’t enough of an example. Where did you get that idea from Hannity & Combes? The ONLY conspiracy you have to figure out is a) how will you pay for your pension & what will soon-be non-existent Soc. Security benefits, healthcare for your family, or when those artificially-low interest rates start soaring through the roof, well because we have to pay for that cute lil’ deficit that your better-than-the-alternative-Bush is responsible for? But that’s all right you won’t have to worry about any of this as you’re playing “militia” & screaming libertarians-united in your compound somewhere in Michigan. Luckily there’s still some folks in the U.S. who still feel somewhat responsible for their country-so they get that they have to pay taxes–otherwise whose going to pay for Cheney getting close to $30mil in a tax refund?

Let them eat cake | 6/10/2006, 5:11 am EST

Haven’t heard who the right-wing whack jobs think would make their next “Great” “leader”(?)for 2008(?)

The suck-up to the far-right, McCain who has back-tracked on everything he once “stood” for

Who has waffled all over the place on the “war”(a firm no-yes), the Ports Deal, (Do you like strawberries on your waffle?), or “how wonderful” the man who cheated him out of the Repube primary prior to 2000 is….

Or the bold and “crisis-solver” Giuliani, who never had the guts to show his “feelings” or opinions on the Ports Deal or on the cut in New York’s “Homeland Security” funding by Bush or, his take on the “war” in Iraq……

Or, how about the widows of 9/11, and Creepy Coulter’s take on them(?)

Giuliani strangely silent, again…

These two are so busy worrying about their chances to gain the GOP’S spot on the ticket for ‘08, they have lost their voices…..

Or, we could go the convict route and try Frist, DeLay, Rove, Cheney(whoops, we had him-leaves a bad taste in the mouth).

If that is the best Repube’s can do than it ain’t much-they’ll have to get busy cheatin now……..

Kristian | 6/10/2006, 5:45 pm EST

Kind of ironic…I ask the liberals here who they would really like to see run in ‘08 other than Dean/Gore.

All I get is aggresive attacks on republicans…

Kinda sums up the party, I think….they have very little to offer other than their outright hatred for the other side. Too bad they can’t harness that energy into something more
productive.

Capitalist Pig | 6/12/2006, 6:29 pm EST

Fascists-R-Us, could not resist could you? Had to call me a facist. Now why not break out the other usual and predictable liberal cries…racist..bigot..homophobe. You really think being called a facist by a liberal upsets anyone?

Personally I am not worried about Social Security..I would never bank my future on a liberal social program, we know that will fail like all other liberal ideas.

Now let’s face the real inconvient truth. The earth is in a warming cycle. It will end and then a cooling cycle will begin (and libs will start screaming Global Cooling). This has been going on since the beginning of time. Al Gore tries to blame intensifing hurricanes on global warming–yet the worst hurricanes to hit the US were in 1900, 1926, and 1935. Gore also asserts that Katrina got stronger as it entered the Gulf. Fact is Katrina entered the Gulf as a Cat.5, and then decreased to a Cat. 3 by landfall.

Then there is Al’s big evil–CO2. Plants use CO2 to make food, and is necessary for the planet. But of course Al tries to make man made CO2 bad, even though most scientist disagree with this theory. CO2 is CO2. The highest levels of man made CO2 occured between 1940 and 1980. Yet during this time the tempertures fell. I guess that is another inconvient truth. Professor Paul Reiter of Institut Pasteur in Paris referred to Al’s film as “Pure, mind-bending progaganda”. Well put.

And what is Al’s solution to these problems? Central planning, of course. Central planning..hmm..what failed leftist nation does that make me think of? Of yeah..the USSR.

Al’s global warming scare is nothing new. Liberals have tried the “chicken little” approach before. In the 1970’s there was the population bomb. The earth could not support the poeple, something had to be done. When the sky did not fall, the libs went back to the drawing board. Then came the 1990’s. This time it was the coming ice age. But the glaciers did not come. So now chicken little breaks out global warming.

Let them eat cake…no conservative will vote for John McCain, he is a dem posing as a Republican. No we will go with someone like Newt. And get your facts straight on what Ann said. She did not say anything about 9/11 widows. She was speaking about 4 specific widows. And she is completely right. One thing libs love more than “the sky is falling” is victims. These four women put themselves in the public arena by making political attacks. Her point was how liberals love to bring out some victim to argue for their cause, and then expect these people not to be critisized because they are victims. Just another liberal tactic to avoid debate (like screaming racist, facist, homophobe, etc.).

It really don’t matter who the Republicans choose. As long as “Dizzy” Dean is running the Dumbacratic party and pandering to the kook base the dems will lose.

sheilabk@hotmail.com | 7/1/2006, 1:10 pm EST

“Are you a god?, that line from the movie Ghostbusters, came to mind when I first saw Al Gore. He was really handsome with chisled, even features; impeccably dressed, though it was still hot that October in 2000 in downtown New Orleans; he was big, like a thoroughbred horse is big, not fat; and he had a glow, he seemed to radiate energy and light (maybe it was the humidity). Tipper had the same look.
Gore is so misperceived on all fronts. No, he’s misrepresented on all fronts.
When Gore lost the election, the earth’s fate was sealed. The Biblical irony is that Ralph Nader, the original champion of the enviornment, would allow the dark side to win. It fulfills prophecy of Job that all human achievement and even consciousness, will be reduced to nothing, so nothing will “glory” in God’s presence. All systems in nature right themselves. (Can you imagine how many of us there’d be had there been no plagues, no famine, no war?) High technology, low population. That’s the ticket. Our brains have overloaded our asses. The number of human beings who will have lived on earth is a finite number. Everything is backwards: war is peace, we’re invading and bombing, but we’re the good guys, we’re “Christians” but forget to love one another and turn the other cheek. These seem like the final days and GWBush sealed our fate. I guess I’m freaked out and a fatalist because I’ve lost everything to earth changes. The first to go was my house on the lakefront in Mandeville, to hurricanes Isidore and Lily. FEMA wasn’t handing out money indiscrimanently as they are now. Hurricane Ivan took out my investment condo in Orange Beach Alabama. And now Katrina has made the surviving properties in New Orleans, Biloxi and coastal Alabama worthless, uninsurable, unsellable. Believe what Al Gore is saying. Al Gore is a noble man and in the end, I want to be lined up on his side.

Tom | 7/13/2006, 3:53 am EST

Gore for President? Bring him on. Carl Rove will hack him to pieces. Gore is such a dreary, dreary politician. He is not an environmentalist, he is a P-O-L-I-T-I-C-I-A-N.

Let them eat cake | 7/19/2006, 4:13 pm EST

To the rightie who bellows, “Gore is not presidential material” – what poor excuse for a man/”president” have you Repubs given us?

Gore won in 2000 but we had a cheat and his Republican politicians fix the election in ugly and odd ways…

Gore is smart(Unlike Bush) and would have handled any major political issue vastly superior to the current tyrant….

The current Regime needs to depart for anywhere and leave the country in one piece…..

The disasterous Katrina “rescue mission” by the Bush administration and Bush’s push for war, any war except in nations that are equipped to do some damage, illustrates how much in trouble we will continue to be if Georgie is left in power…

kit;ty | 8/14/2006, 7:43 pm EST

Instead of writing insults to each other, a closed loop if I ever saw one, get off the computer and go out and help some person other than those “POLITICIANS’ who are now being discussed. This country needs a STATESMAN. Are there any out there. Any suggestions? Forget all of those who have had the power to stop the invasion of Iraq and didn’t. All cowards are null.

DanRonk maine. | 2/6/2007, 12:29 pm EST

Global warming is a potential life or death issue as is the war in iraq. Al Gore please run for President and stop this Landslide in Iraq and with the forecoming issue of global warming. America needs you. The world needs you…

UVA grad | 3/28/2007, 4:12 pm EST

let them eat cake –

For starters let me say this, Gore didnt win in 2000. The votes were tallied several times, and he DIDNT WIN. A very liberal organization went to florida to count the votes after bush was accepted into office and counted for themselves. Even they admitted Bush won. You democraps just cant seem to get it threw your head that gore lost. Second of all, the Katrina rescue rescue mission. It wasnt even neccassary. If the poor people are to stupid to walk to higher ground, then shame on em. Besides, do you not recall the news of those mindless coons shooting at rescue helicopters. If you ask me, they got what was coming to them.
