D.C.: A Land of No True Words

Hillary ClintonIf Bush’s tepid speech last night left you wanting, check out Matt Taibbi’s latest column for his take on another troubled politician: Hillary Clinton.

What do you think? Has Hillary already blown her credibility, or is she still the candidate to beat in ‘08?

Amen brother! Hilary Clinton spoke to my graduating class in ‘99, and rather than embark wisdom to a class of 7000 graduates, she gave us a robotic stump speech that ruined my day.

I’ve already decided to vote for McCain if he runs against Clinton in 2008. She’s the worst candidate ever.

Will | 1/24/2007, 11:24 am EST

Really interesting article, but the fact is she’s only one of many talking-heads who constantly fear even the notion of originality. How is Hillary’s speech that different in terms of presentation and verbiage when compared to anyone in the Bush administration? I’m starting to believe that politico-campaigning is the next step in the evolution of being politically correct – after all, we wouldn’t want to offend anyone if we used the wrong adjective or pronoun, right? I admit that I’m not as informed in these matters as much as the next guy (mainly because all of this shit usually gives me a migraine), but there hasn’t been anyone that has entered the ‘08 Campaign Trail that’s screamed “new, exciting President material” (with the possible exception of Barak Obama). Long story short, DC has become a big ocean with many, many small guppies.

GenerationXVoter | 1/24/2007, 11:57 am EST

I agree. Hillary Clinton appears to know what she’s talking about, but in reality does not.

As a Democrat (most of the times), I would much rather see Barack Obama on the ballot against John McCain. I would be glad to have Obama as a president, but if the Republicans hold office for another four years, I’d be glad it’s McCain and not some of the other whack-jobs that are out there.

Anonymous | 1/24/2007, 12:21 pm EST

It’s this sort of overly-polished tripe that is going to cost her the nomination.

With everyone peggin Obama or Hillary, I think people are ignoring the appeal of John Edwards.

mccain will be 74 on election day he si all about war and the denail of rights he led the effort to stop nativeamericans from usiing peyote ill not vote for mccain.

Amen | 1/24/2007, 12:36 pm EST

McCain has been a critic of the war in the past. Remember, he seriously considered running as Kerry’s VP. McCain still remains critical of the war now, but he has considered the options in Iraq, and he beleives a troop increase is the only practical way forward.

The thing is, I highly doubt the Democrats would pull the troops out of Iraq if they controlled the White House right now. Like McCain, they’re all just playing to their base.

What sickens me is that the “election year” and all it’s nastiness and political half-speak is now 24 months long. What a nightmare!

Will | 1/24/2007, 1:18 pm EST

One other point: as much as we’d like to believe otherwise (this is the case with me, at least), celebrity matters almost as much – or it might even be equal to at this point – the stances you hold on issues. That’s one of the points of campaigning, to up your TV time obviously, but right now Democratic candidates such as John Edwards and Bill Richardson aren’t making much of a dent in the public sphere, in my honest opinion. Does anyone believe it’s coincidence that Edwards has been mentioned once in this online forum while people like McCain, Obama, and even Lieberman are at the tips of everyones’ tongues? In an ideal world, the amount of media time you collect wouldn’t have this much of an effect on the votes you receive.

That said, let’s remember that both Obama and Hillary are both junior senators – meaning they both have relatively low.. managerial (for lack of better term) experience when compared to others who have entered the race. This might be a detriment to both of them as well (aside from the far-right still crapping their pants at the prospect of a woman/minority president). I hate to say it since I consider myself a liberal, but McCain would take it if the polls happened today.

Then again, we could do worse… oh wait, we have.

Boner | 1/24/2007, 1:29 pm EST

This is going to be funny when the dems blow it again. Hilary is obviously a phony, but can you name one poltician who isn’t? Obama is a way overrated rookie who has zero experience bangin with the big boys. His only chance comes from the fact that every minority will vote for him even though most of them could not name one of his policies. Politics make me laugh. Unfortunately, no one in Iraq is laughing. If you don’t know your shit, don’t vote.

Ummm | 1/24/2007, 1:43 pm EST

Every poll I’ve seen has Edwards edging all Republicans in a one on one match up.

Candidates like Hillary and Obama pander to their base while inciting the opposition. You’d think elections were a war of democrats vs republicans rather than a political process for selecting the best candidate.

OK | 1/24/2007, 1:51 pm EST

Hilary Clinton is the only candidate that has serious name recognition, thus she is the only one to beat. Don’t try and delude yourselves otherwise. She also has the experience (the women’s been in the white house before!). She has a REAL chance, but no one knows anything about anyone’s policies yet, so lets quit the debate, cause its all just about celebrity at the moment.

Rawrp | 1/24/2007, 2:40 pm EST

Better than Hillary, Obama, etc.:

Richardson in ‘08!
Check him out.
7-term Congressman; former Ambassador to the UN and North Korea; Former Secretary of Energy; 2nd term Governor of New Mexico…
Calling for 80% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2015; Talks with Iran & North Korea; sensible immigration party; Nat’l health care coverage.

Calm down, folks…the election’s almost 2 years away. Nobody had even heard of Bill Clinton in ‘90.

Administratorte | 1/24/2007, 2:59 pm EST

Shows how far out of touch I am. I thought her slogan was a takeoff on the NY Lotto “You’ve got to be in it to win it” slogan. Maybe HC could also use “You never know” and “All you need is a dollar and a dream” in her speeches.

Cheers

Ever read Hillary’s biography? It was at least as bad, if not worse, than the political cant Matt Taibbi so delightfully skewers. Read like it was written by focus-group pollsters: anodyne, bland, ersatz — pick your adjective. The only memorable, funny thing in it was her description of Strom Thurmond’s leeringly flattering comments to her and Chelsea.

The whole process reminds me of an ad I once read about some corporate voice mail package that was being hawked: the gist of it was that to “appear” professional, one’s business needed to institute Voice Mail Hell, so customers understood they were dealing with a Real Player.

In other words, drive your customers nuts by acting like AT&T Customer Service, and they’ll be impressed.

With Presidential campaign rhetoric, the game is similar: any sort of genuine expression of wit, personality, or a genuine and thoughtful point of view about anything is absolutely verboten! That wouldn’t be Professional!

Much as I despise this idiotic game, and love the way Taibbi skewers it here, and in his book “Spanking the Donkey,” there may be no fighting it. Candidates who stray from the straight-and-narrow path of meaningless pablum seem to get flattened pretty quickly by the great sages of our media.

Ron | 1/24/2007, 8:07 pm EST

How is it that he had a problem with every single sentence she said? If she’s such an awful orator, I’d like to see what this guy’s version of a good speech is. I don’t even like her, but why don’t you try some criticism that’s a little more substantive than this nonsense.

Graham | 1/24/2007, 8:22 pm EST

Let’s get a minority in the White House so that the President might start looking at America’s own socioeconomic problems, which most white presidents have ignored, seemingly because the poorest areas of our country are full of minorities. A little introspection would do America a world of good, and someone from a different background (not a white elitist) is the person for the job. “And though it seems heaven sent, we ain’t right to see a black president.”

Brian | 1/24/2007, 8:34 pm EST

Whatever. 18 months from now this magazine will have her vomitrocious face plastered all over its cover. And inside will be a 10 page interview encouraging her to spew that same shit.

YES GUYS!

Hillary is an insincere robot. McCain, however, is the most honest and sincere politician in America today. The reason he doesn’t bash the war is because he has too much respect for the troops fighting overseas (a former war hero himself). He does critize the war policies though (if you say he’s a Bush guy, you are a closed-minded tool who doesn’t know what your talking about). He has critized Bush’s stragey and been extremely outspoken on torture-like interrogations. Unlike many Democrats, however, he keeps an open-mind, knows what war is actually like, and respects the troops enough to not cause dissent against them. I love McCain because an independent thinker who’s sincere in fighting for what he believes in. And I hate Hillary for the exact opposite.

Amen | 1/24/2007, 9:44 pm EST

I’m not sure why my posts were copied several times, but I wanted to say that I am not responsible for it.

Someone seems to be suggesting that my posts are propaganda. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m a card-carrying leftist.

I like Obama a lot. He’s my man in 2008, and I probably work on his campaign. McCain was my man in 2000. The Bush Administration has since pushed me to the left, but a nomination for Hillary could push me back to the right. Honestly.

Really, I think any party in power is inherently corrupt. Remember all the hoopla about Tony Blair back in 1997? Well, what did he do for England?

Rustin | 1/25/2007, 12:19 am EST

I agree that Hilary sucks, but no more then McCain. This guy was a prisoner of war and still compromised with bush on torture. He wrote a book to argue the “911 is an inside job” theory. Why is that what John McCain thought was most important thing to write about? I hope everyone understands there is little difference in the outcome between Hilary and McCain. The thing is, is that the person that you should vote for is not going to be in the news a lot, because 5 corporations own all of the media/channels. They are going to give exposure to candidates that meet their needs.
I am liberal, and the best candidate is Ron Paul, a republican Rep from Texas. Of course no one is talking about this guy, because none of the 5 mega corporations want him in office.

Wake up everyone

Boogity, Boogity – Boo!

All the little righties, claiming to be “LEFTIES” who are so Upset with Hillary that they’ll vote for Bush’s latest Chimp, er is that Chump-Mixed-up McCain…

The guy has more personalities than Sybil and can’t seem to stick to any one side…(He’s long past the SuperGlue and has become(In the hands of his latest Corrupt Creators, Silly Putty.)

Not to be taken Seriously anymore than the Sock Puppets that are trying to keep the Republican Sinkin Ship Afloat…

RRRRRRRRRR-Sorry, it won’t work.
Libby didn’t have the VIP to release the Wilson info or anyone else with out the Co-President of Vice(Cheney) and the Troll of the White House(Rove)…

The suck-up, spineless Republicans who are still attached to Bush’s Scrawny Tailbone, need to lick their lips and, start looking for new jobs….

‘Ole Cheney is also talking about going after the “Oil Power”. What was Hitler’s motto/excuse?

The Oil Companies are Creepy little parasites, determined to rule corrupt political imbeciles like Bush/Cheney/former SDRumsfeld.

These monsters want to rule the world and belong in a prison dumpster…

Obama, Edwards, Clinton are so far above the current Asses of Evil, the only vote the Republicans will garner are the Minority of Imbeciles who live in permanent delusion with the dicks and dufasses who illicitly dwell in the White House now….

EllenG | 1/25/2007, 4:04 am EST

’speech was really remarkable for its computerized coldness even compared to such notorious campaign robots as John Kerry and Wes Clark.’

Too bad I can’t accept this ‘review,’ for tho I don’t care for Hillary, I know that General Clark is about the farthest thing from robotic I can imagine. I hope that folks will watch and listen to him, as he appears in public forums frequently.

Too bad that RS bothers with Taibbi, because his opinions are nasty, brutish, AND worthless.

C U in Hell | 1/25/2007, 6:42 am EST

Fuck John McCain and fuck all this bullshit. Here’s an idea: maybe Hillary’s vapid because she’s smart; maybe she’s uninspiring because she’s perspicacious. Maybe this country’s been pushed so far to the right that the only way a Democrat can get elected president is to act the way Hillary’s acting now — i.e., like a Republican. You ever think of that?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the Democrats are the new conservatives, the Republicans are the new fascists, and there simply is no left wing anymore. The American Left now consists of the green-haired kid handing out cheap xeroxes of a homemade socialist newsletter in front of the organic grocery co-op on the outskirts of your local public university. He’s not much of a threat to anybody, save the laws of human nature (which are generally not enforced by governments).

When I hear of some right-wing fuckhead like Sean Hannity calling Nancy Pelosi or John Murtha “left-wing” or “far left,” I laugh. Then I cringe, because I know the bastards have won.

Personally, I think people like Hillary Clinton are just trying to save this country from its own salacious, exploratory love affair with neofascism. You just wait and see the PR hit jobs the “liberal” media will pull on people like Barack Obama and John Edwards. They’ll never make it, and even if they did (which is impossible), they’d be killed. That’s what happens to real progressive politicians in this country — it’s why they haven’t been around for the last 40 years.

You think I’m being facetious? Look at Bill Clinton: balanced the federal budget, bombed the shit out of Serbia and Iraq, tried to kill Osama bin Laden, and presided over the most significant welfare reform of any administration, Republican or Democrat, in the last half-century. Bill Clinton is now considered “far left.” What a crock of shit.

Clinton was a man who knew how not to rock the boat, and I suspect his wife is the same. Understand this: real progressives, real liberals don’t exist anymore. They’ve all been destroyed, either figuratively or literally. Hillary is merely trying to delay the inevitable.

Will | 1/25/2007, 7:23 am EST

“…so lets quit the debate, cause its all just about celebrity at the moment.”

Truer words never spoken.

trippin | 1/25/2007, 10:03 am EST

I wouldn’t vote for McCain if someone held a gun to my head. He’s as spineless a lying right wing bastard as Bush. The only difference is that McCain didn’t go AWOL. That’s it. McCain is for the wealthy. I put Clinton in the same category. She’s a suckp to coproate interests. There are differences: Clinton might be more inclined to throw a bone our way once in a while while she robs the Treasury for HER cronies this time. She STILL hasn’t taken a leadership position on extricating us from this war. She’s nothing but a big bloated bag of bullshit.

Somehwere In the Middle | 1/25/2007, 1:13 pm EST

Try and stay true to the facts. Libby didn’t leak the info on Wilson. It was Dick Armitage and Dick Armitage alone who told Bob Novak about Valerie Plame working for the CIA. Rove, Cheney and Bush for that fact had nothing to do with it.

Jacob | 1/25/2007, 1:58 pm EST

yeah, the dems need to find another candidate besides hillary. i’m a hardcore Dem, but i REALLY don’t like her. Obama is smart, if he could come up with some good ideas and progressive policies….I think he’d be a real contender.

Rustin | 1/25/2007, 10:42 pm EST

It isnt a dem or rep decision. Both are going to be puppets most likely. I still haven’t heard anyone comment on (R)Rep from Texas Ron Paul. I am liberal, which is neither rep or dem 99% of the time. Ron Paul ‘08, check it out, 14th district.

Rustin | 1/25/2007, 10:49 pm EST

And while were at it, Dennis Kucinich would be nice for the Democratic nomination. Probably haven’t heard from him either, thats because 5 corporations own all media/channels.

Michael | 1/27/2007, 2:01 am EST

Had Hillary embraced head-on her undeniable role as an unwitting martyr/archetype for the modern professional woman, had she opened up her campaign by actually showing us what her private thoughts have been throughout all of these trying times, and what she might think the meaning of her journey has been or could be, she would have instantly established herself as an extraordinarily interesting and compelling story, at the very least.

Sometimes, Matt, I wonder about you. I’m glad Hillary is not reaching into what remains of her soul to make a compelling story, since interesting though it may be, it would only more deeply conceal her complete lack of principal, her complicity in all the worst crimes of the Bush administration, her shameless pandering, her unqualified support for Israeli apartheid, her complete and utter banality as a politician.

Politics shouldn’t be about interesting lives and interesting speeches. It’s about policy. You should know better. Get a grip.

Maybe people need to wise-up and stop voting sound bytes…

The evidence is tumbling in, on what the Republican Rule has done to our Country.

They are strip-mining our Infra-Structure(How Cool Would It Be, To Have Some Expert Economists,Line for Line, give us the Exacta on how much Halliburton, Cheney, Bush, Rove, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle have profiteered off the Bush War in Iraq).

While New Orleans sank, millions of seniors, workers have lost most of their health care and benefits(pensions, retirements), how much SS has been sucked up for the Bush war(?), how many billions have been depleted from public education(?), raises in tuitions, hospital cut-backs, significant jobs that went “bye, bye” and, outsourcing, labor unions that are gone, while workers are working for peanuts to provide for their families…

Corporate America is Booming(Funny though, how Ford, Major Air Lines, etc. have taken huge dives)…(But, understand how the “Economy is boomin”…

Which candidate in either Party is really addressing these issues….

Forget Tax Cuts-It is borrowing on money that will never be there, and candidates that are too chichen to call Bush/Cheney “War” on terror what it is-Profiteering for Republican politicians and Lieberman.

Look at Bush and Cheney(Two that should have been in prison for federal election tampering, treason, misappropriation of funds, war crimes, and, being Ugly…

They are drooling all over themselves to bring Iran and other MiddleEastern Countries into a war that will go Global…
(Power and Greed and Control have bred Insanity) and Bush and Cheney are the Weasles who are the Poster Boys for it…

The Safest Option for Our Country is a candidate willing to call it as it is, and Make Impeachment a Happening.

An Intellectual with Charisma is badly needed to guide our Country back to something that Is American and doesn’t just Mouth It like Bush/Cheney…

Obama, Edwards, Clark(VP), Clinton(VP)…

Republicans need to get a Clue and some Guts-Hagel is O.K. but still carries the Republican economic/platform beliefs-Great Courage Going against Bush/Cheney-deferment Kings, War-Mongering…

Much Prayer is needed for “Amen”-No reruns of the Bush/Cheney platform, thanks- No McCain Lap Dog needed!(His leash held by Bush, is getting shorter all the time.)

lets be honest | 2/8/2007, 2:01 pm EST

Agree or disagree: if there was to be female candiate for the next election, it could not be Hilary. She does not have half of the personality and ability to sell her ideas/policies that Bill did(not to say anything for or against Bill). America may or may not be ready for a female president, but it is certainly not Hilary.
