The End of Accountability: Dollar Bill Jefferson Cruises

12/10/06, 9:51 pm EST

What’s a cold, hard $90,000 between friends?

The comically corrupt “Dollar” Bill Jefferson — who was filmed taking bribe money by the FBI and later found with most of that money in his Frigidaire — has been reelected in a runoff, garnering 52 percent of the vote.

It’s really hard to find fault in the fecklessness of the House Ethics Committee — which whitewashed the Foley coverup on Friday — when it’s clear the public just doesn’t fucking care.

Seriously. Elections, as president Bush has said, truly are “accountability moments.” And when voters give obviously crooked pols a free pass, can we be surprised when they do the same for themselves? Why should the Ethics Committee impose real consequences on fellow House members, when, as long as the pork keeps coming home, vile men like Jefferson can escape consequences with the voting public.

Hey, the voters have spoken. This scandal was very well publicized, if the people still wanted him in office, that’s their choice.

J Noles | 12/11/2006, 9:38 am EST

People have to remember that if you’re unhappy with who is in Congress, they are elected in by their “constituents.”

It’s a two-way street, and it’s clear that from the electoral results, the people could care less.

Andy | 12/11/2006, 11:11 am EST

My God, Tim Dickinson criticized a Democrat. I’m in SHOCK!

Isn’t this in Lousiana? Electing corrupt people is a hobby there. How can this surprise anyone after racist, brain-dead tool like Nagin was re-elected?

jeffery mcnary | 12/11/2006, 11:22 am EST

yonder comes the indictment, yes? so a special election may well loom out there.

ravenwind | 12/11/2006, 12:02 pm EST

Uh, what voters? Let’s not paint me, as a voter in a Rocky Mountain state, with the same brush as voters in LA.
After all, Montana sent a corrupt senator packing and elected someone squeaky clean.

Rowr | 12/11/2006, 12:55 pm EST

It is Louisiana. And the Republican candidate was nobody to write home about…maybe the public elected Jefferson knowing that when he goes down, they’ll get another Democrat. Dickinson calls it stupid, what if its purposeful and intelligent?

Using the same electoral math, Rhode Island got rid of Chaffee..not because he wasn’t great, but because he was a Republican.

Let Them Eat Cake | 12/11/2006, 4:05 pm EST

Too bad, Jefferson is a wrinkle in the Democrats Court… He should be Out but the Louisiana voters have done an OJ…Big Mistake…

Maybe no one better to choose from(?)….

Hallzee | 12/11/2006, 5:07 pm EST

Republicans are forced to step down.

Democrats get re-elected.

Would you guys who said “the people voted for him” have said the same if Texans had re-elected Delay?

If a politician is caught in an illegal scandal, and he is a Democrat, does it make a sound?

Terry L. Clark | 12/11/2006, 8:08 pm EST

Tim, I think you miss the distinction between a politician that ALLEGEDLY (we are still in America, aren’t we? Or did that too get revoked under the Patriot Act?) takes payoffs and screws his or her constituents, vs. a politician that takes care of their constituants and doesn’t take them to the proverbial cleaners.

Jack D | 12/11/2006, 9:22 pm EST

No Halzee,

We would have said “Those dumb mother fuckers in Texas re-elected that ass…again”.

But, it would not have been as disastrous or as suprising….they also elected George.
Those dumb mother fuckers!

Jab | 12/11/2006, 10:01 pm EST

I prefer not to brand any particular state as inferior, but if I chose one it would be in the South. They’re nice—seemingly, so polite—but lacking in the brains. Of course that’s a broad generalization, but the human element defies most attempts anyway.

I wouldn’t say the people in Texas are dumb, but only because they’re so damn prideful of their ignorance. I’d be leery of “messing with Texas” . . . it’s on every fucking license plate.

Jed Clampett | 12/11/2006, 11:23 pm EST

Hey, he may have been trying to make the money last longer by keeping it frozen.

He was planning on going to Alaska for vacation and wanted Ted Stevens to feel comfortable with the money he was paying for the toll bridge he is building.

I guess we can only hope he gets indicted and convicted b4 he can do too much damage. Our political system is truly disfunctional.

Liz | 12/12/2006, 12:59 am EST

“Isn’t this in Lousiana? Electing corrupt people is a hobby there.” Maybe you idiots should read a book, or maybe, god forbid, a newspaper! Preferably one that has been published in the past five years. Jefferson’s opponent in the run-off was Karen Carter, a DEMOCRAT state rep.

Quit being stupid, intolerant people, read a little, and try to get past the politics of Edwin Edwards. Not everyone in Louisiana is corrupt. We’ve had to deal with a little more than what a normal scandal would produce.

Jethro Bodine | 12/12/2006, 1:11 am EST

Waiting for pundits to demand electoral reform, including voting machine overhaul. Because Democrats, who explicitly feared Rove woould rig/steal/upset the election, have gone silent on the issue since they won.

The system that delivered GWB and the 109th Congress to the Republicans also works for the Democrats – at a local level most often – and the Democrats would rather suffer a few national losses than upset the local spoils. Like the spoils that Jefferson takes from /gives to his (connected) constituents.

So, are political parties dead? Yes. Your voice only counts when you can deliver power or wealth.

Let Them Eat Cake | 12/12/2006, 5:37 am EST

Democrats are still concerned about “Doctored elections”…

The voting machines should be old news(Gone) and, more strict rules on who can become a “political election official” and more monitoring of the the ballots and who is counting them…

Since nothing can be done until January, let’s give the Party that will be in Power, a chance…

I am still concerned about how the ballots were counted and by whom in all fifty states…

That Schmidt and Crocker er Cracker were “elected”, should send up some Red Flags-who tampered there(?)

It’s Late-Time Flies and All That…Ummmm…

We need lots of Voting/Campaign Reform….

C U in Hell | 12/12/2006, 1:04 pm EST

Pathetic.

Andy | 12/12/2006, 2:57 pm EST

Jeb: “I wouldn’t say the people in Texas are dumb, but only because they’re so damn prideful of their ignorance. I’d be leery of “messing with Texas” . . . it’s on every fucking license plate.”

“Don’t Mess with Texas” is an anti-littering campaign, not a pride thing, you stupid piece of shit. If you were any more brainless, you’d be on life support.

I looked up his Congressional biography. William Jefferson received his law degree from Harvard and a Masters of Law degree from Georgetown. He served in the Louisiana State Senate from 1979 to 1990 when he was elected to Congress.

What puzzles me is that with his very impressive educational background, he could have made moare money practicing law in Louisiana. Why become a corrupt politician?
