Who Do You Love?: Not Kerry, Apparently

11/27/06, 3:23 pm EST

Quinnipiac University has released a favorability ranking of America’s top politicians and presidential contenders. The poll holds great news for Rudy and Barack. John Kerry, however, is in America’s dog house, checking in four points below President Bush, who’s at 44 percent favorable.

The true winner in this poll is Obama. The numbers in parentheses below indicate the percent of responders who didn’t know enough to form an opinion. That means Obama (41%) has a lot of introductions to make, but that so far people love what they see.

Compare that to Hillary (1% undecided). That means a far more challenging task is ahead of her if she wants to be president: Changing the minds of people who know her well, and dislike her because of it.

Also surprising: Joe Lieberman’s likeability quotient is greater than the ever sunny John Edwards.’
1) Rudolph Giuliani – 64.2. (9)
2) Sen. Barack Obama 58.8 (41)
3) Sen. John McCain 57.7 (12)
4) Condoleezza Rice – 56.1 (7)
5) Bill Clinton – 55.8 (1)
6) Sen. Joseph Lieberman – 52.7 (16)
7) NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg – 51.1 (44)
8) John Edwards – 49.9 (20)
9) Sen. Hillary Clinton – 49 (1)
10) N.M. Gov. Bill Richardson – 47.7 (65)
11) Sen. Joseph Biden 47 (52)
12) Nancy Pelosi 46.9 (34)
13) Gov. Mitt Romney – 45.9 (64)
14) Former VP Al Gore – 44.9 (3)
15) President George Bush – 43.8 (1)
16) Sen. Evan Bayh – 43.3 (75)
17) Newt Gingrich – 42 (15)
18) Sen. Bill Frist – 41.5 (53)
19) Sen. Harry Reid – 41.2 (61)
20) Sen. John Kerry – 39.6 (5)

One has to wonder why we do not simply use such an approval rating to elect our leaders. This method is called approval voting (candidate approved by the most voters wins), and can be easily achieved by just taking away the over-voting proscription; that is, let people vote for or against as many candidates as they like, instead of just giving information about one of them (the minimum possible information).

We can make this system even better by allowing “fractional” votes, and “no opinion” options; this is called “range voting”, and is the best voting method that could be feasibly implemented. Both of these methods (approval and range) are dramatically better and simpler than other proposed methods, like instant runoff voting, for example.

I voted for Kerry but, let’s face it, he’s kind-of a douche. He’s great on policy but terrible in public…this last foot-in-mouth incident, for example, can’t be blamed on poor consultants, like his 2004 loss was. And about that loss? How pathetic that he couldn’t beat GW. Forget hindsight, everything that’s happend in the last two years was predictable, based on the Bush record, and any politician worth his weight in ketchup should’ve been able to beat the pants off that dood…

What I don’t get about this poll is the uneven ratings for several of the politicians. Does Bill Richardson’s rating reflect that more people approve of him than really know about him?

And is it really possible that everyone (and, in some cases, more than everyone) who knows about Richardson, Bloomberg, Biden, Romney, and Bayh believes they were 100% stand-up guys? This seems a bit fishy to me…Further, it doesn’t seem that one can compare the stats of the folks who’s “known” rating is +90% with guys like Richardson who are unknown to more than 50% of the pop. I mean, when it come to politics, familiarity seems to breed contempt and that should be considered.

Because of course, a poll that shows Rudy Guliani and Condoleeza Rice in the most liked people in the country is something credible.

The media have been attacking Kerry for weeks now and we should be surprised by the results? This does not reflect whether Kerry is liked or not. This reflects the media not doing their works concerning people like Guliani or McCain, but spending too much time on an idiot joke that does not matter.

Have you watched Studio 60 last night. The network director had an interview with a Time reporter who was repeating the same type of BS political reporters are spending their time on. I just wished that some politicians would answer the same way. This is no more reporting. This is the gossip column.

Interesting that 3 of the top 4 people on the list are Conservatives. No wonder there’s no comments from the usually SP crowd.
