Matt Taibbi’s Last Ditch (Heroic?) Effort to Save Rick Santorum

11/16/06, 5:41 pm EST

To Santorum, opponents were whores, terrorists, Nazis, boy-touchers and traitors. But Taibbi could and did spend voting day calling voters for the Santorum camp. Wanna see the full story? Check it out, and talk back to Taibbi.

They had nothing to say except that the Republicans sucked — which was true

Yes, but by and large they primarily explained that the Republicans’ positions and Congrssional votes sucked, rather than they sucked as people. (For example, the Michael J. Fox ad against Talent, which quite correctly state that Talent was against stem-cell research, not that he was a poodle molester.) There’s really no comparison.

Jethro Bodine | 11/16/2006, 8:19 pm EST

I almost shed a tear, Matt.

Then it became clear: no Republican who lost on Nov 7 is going to quietly fade into the sunset. They’ll be even busier working in the private sector cashing in on their expertise with the federal gravy train, unencumbered by party whips and think tank idealogues.

JohnMcD | 11/17/2006, 10:12 am EST

I love how Matt spends so much of his articles calling Republicans lying, manipulating, divisive figures…Meanwhile, Matt’s calling himself Andy Wittier and talking down to Republican voters like they’re 3-year olds.

The West Coast Kid | 11/17/2006, 3:06 pm EST

Pardon me for being out of touch with the Northeast social circle, but are you Mike Taibbi’s son.

The West Coast Kid | 11/17/2006, 3:08 pm EST

? That should have ended with a ? I wish you could edit your comments on here.

Jed Clampett | 11/17/2006, 11:30 pm EST

‘Like watching old yeller die’… oh man, even if these right wingers don’t appreciate the humor in your writing, some of us do Matt. Love the phone call bit. That’s probably right off the script they give out. Keep up the writing, expose them for what they are, the danger we’ve been warned about and have seen spring up again and again.

Existentialoctavius | 11/18/2006, 12:35 am EST

Go back to the hills, Jed, and take Jethro with you. . . you don’t know what you are talking about

Jed Clampett | 11/18/2006, 4:44 am EST

Run to the hills,…run for your life!!!

Oh, so I don’t agree with your diatribe and find the humor in Matt’s work, this makes me unkworthy of an opinion. You sir, are a GENIOUS!!! a veritable Rhode Scholar. Quite worthy of a 30 minute spot on FoxNews channel with O’really and HUMus.

Existentialoctavius | 11/18/2006, 7:31 am EST

Humor? Even though Colbert’s politics are not my politics, I do find him humorous. This article . . . not so much

Jed Clampett | 11/18/2006, 9:17 am EST

being the Genious you are, you probably believe Colbert’s right wing sarcasm is for real rather than an act.
I wonder how many on these blogs watch Colbert because they think he’s actually a right winger.
Meanwhile those of us who understand laugh at his irony.

Jethro Bodine | 11/18/2006, 3:45 pm EST

Right about now, Colbert is crying in his ovaltine about how Sacha B Cohen hit the irony nail so squarely on the American head this month. To the tune of $70 million. Colbert better hire some frat-boy stooges real quick if he wants to ride the Borat wave.

Existentialoctavius | 11/19/2006, 11:46 am EST

No, Jed . . . I recognize satire when I see it, and because I do have a sense of humor, I can laugh. It is sad, though, if you only get information from sources like Rolling Stone and Comedy Central. Unlike most of you of the liberal bent, I choose to get my information from a variety of real-news sources. Unlike some, I have the ability to take the news full-strength, undiluted by sophomoric “humor”. One more thing . . . you’re a little sexist, aren’t you. You presume that I am a man. Like I said, go back to the hills.

PA Democrat | 11/19/2006, 12:43 pm EST

I voted for Casey. He was a fine governur of our state. I’m sur he’ll be great senatur. The democrats think like i do, that why they get my vote. They are just like me.

jes | 11/19/2006, 1:03 pm EST

Finally, after suffocating for 6 years under this administration there is a breath of fresh air – why the average guy votes for the Repubs is amazing to me since the Repubs only represent: A large military complex/Big business/the upper 10-15% of the wealthy – the interesting thing about a large military complex is a place where alot of money can be spent without any accountability – all their rhetoric about faith-base, family values and abortion is nothing but a pandering for votes. The thing that sickens me the most is the meaningless deaths of almost 3,000 young men and the lives of young men who are now limbless, blind or mentally affected because of a President who was a failure in his life before being elected and a failure after being elected – this is a guy who is used to sending people to their deaths in Texas – it was easy for him to start an unnecessary war – what is the difference in killing people here or sending men off to war- he has proven to be a threat to other countries because of his unrelenting stupidity and disdain for other cultures – the healing process will only take place when Bush is brought to justice for the bloodshed he has caused.

Existentialoctavius | 11/19/2006, 1:04 pm EST

That is brilliant PA Democrat! ROFL!!! I wonder if Jed gets it!
Ha, ha, ha

PA Democrat | 11/19/2006, 1:09 pm EST

Yeah, your right Jes. Screw those 25 million people we liberated. What did they do for us? Are we really any safet having removed a terrorist dictator with weapons of mass destruction? Of course not. If anything wee need MORE dictators with WMD. We need to be taught a lesson hear in the US.

PA Democrat | 11/19/2006, 1:10 pm EST

Probably not.

august wilson | 11/19/2006, 3:26 pm EST

Dont mean to seem creepy but is there any way to get ahold of Mr. Taibbi? Does he give lectures, ect.? I’m looking for advice on becoming a journelist and since he’s the only good one alive still….

john o | 11/19/2006, 3:30 pm EST

Has matt written any books? hes one hell of a writer

Existentialoctavius | 11/19/2006, 6:11 pm EST

Jed Clampett | 11/19/2006, 9:47 pm EST

Exactly right.

Existentialoctavius | 11/20/2006, 6:26 pm EST

Dear August,

I certainly didn’t mean to be “impolite” . . . just trying to help :) Speaking of helping . . . before words like “honest” which begins with a vowel sound (the “h” is actually silent), you should use the article “an” :) Note: I said that with a polite smile :) Good luck with your career search :)

Existentialoctavius | 11/20/2006, 6:28 pm EST

Hmmmm . . . I guess I won’t use “smiley’s” anymore . . . they didn’t appear where they were supposed to.

Cindy | 11/22/2006, 11:00 am EST

I remember a couple of years ago a friend of mine said that Republican should fear the moment Democrats regain power in Congress. What he said struck me because my friend is an independent. I wonder how real that fear is with the remaining Republican Congress members who, unlike Santorum, survived this year’s drubbing. As much as I’m sure some people would like to see Democrats give Republicans the same treatment, it seems that for the time being, Democrats are above that. But Taibbi is right that Santorum reflects everything that’s wrong with GOP’s brand of disgusting and divisive politics. Republicans need to wake up and realize what’s happened to their party.

Existentialoctavius | 11/25/2006, 6:11 pm EST

Cindy, be specific . . . what do you think is particularly “divisive”? What issues do you consider very important when considering a candidate for high office (i.e. president, vp, senator, representative)? Please educate me.

pi-pi | 12/5/2006, 9:30 pm EST

Sometimes there’s a Rolling Stone laying around at my job. I look to see if Road Kill is in it, and if so, I happily tuck it under my arm to read on a smoke break.
Never am I so gleeful as when you’re trouncing Bush, wondering why it took almost everyone until now to do that arithmetic.
Just saw your piece on Santorum. I wonder why you don’t want to know what was in Santorum’s heart as he exited stage left. I’d pay $1,000 for the real goods on that.

Joe Halloran | 12/6/2006, 2:23 pm EST

Keep doing what your doing Matt. In my opinion you have made Rolling Stone great again. I live a few miles west of Mason, Ohio, where you reported the terrific inadequacies of Jean Schmidt. That article was classic. Next time your in SW Ohio lets drop acid and dress up like vikings. Peace.

tas | 12/8/2006, 10:30 am EST

Actually, I heard that a 12 week old fetus can do calculus. This is from a study by the French.

chris | 12/15/2006, 4:37 am EST

matt – I’m going off topic here. how about a story about our current admin’s lack of interest in port security. I don’t feel bush and co viewed 911 as catastrophe but an opportunity. I work in the LA/Long Beach port, and everything i read seems to say that its only a matter of time until we get hit. i think bush is praying for this – his only interest in port security seems to be using it as excuse to hassle the longshoreman’s union. maybe there’s a story here – maybe not.

kelintheburgh | 12/17/2006, 12:27 am EST

Being a liberal New York Democrat that has taken up residence in Pittsburgh, I’m glad someone else not native to Pennsylvania took as much pleasure watching the good voters wake up from the ignorance and realize that politicans like Santorum are not part of the solution, even if they think that Jesus has their backs.

julie | 2/17/2007, 4:39 pm EST

Just read your piece on Obama on Alternet….brilliant…you give him a run in the rolling polysyallabic overature department. Your rundown kinda busted my bubble of enthusiasm for Obama…but he’s still the only one I would consider supportingbecause he didn’t vote for the war. For me, that says a lot.
