Did you watch the midterm elections? Did it make you want to hold a steak knife to someone’s neck — maybe your own? Check out Matt Taibbi’s election diary for a hard look at the sorry state of TV journalism.

this is not journalism..big yawn

This article made me want to hold a steak knife to Taibbi’s neck and then Jann Wenner’s.
It’s reason # 237 why I prefer Stereogum, Pitchfork etc to this tired old (former) music magazine.

We won!
So the world likes us again, right? No more terrorism? YAY!!!
Does this mean Bush is still Hitler? I’m pretty sure Hitler never let his opponents win an election, did he? Unless . . . this is all part of Rove’s plan.

This article made me think of stories I read in “The Great Shark Hunt: Strange Tales from a Strange Time” by Hunter S. Thompson.
The only difference being the lack of speed, cocaine, a fifth of bourbon, and a fight with another journalist about the spread of the Oakland Raider Seattle Seahawk game.
If Matt Taibbi had added a paranoid passage about being locked in his hotel room fearing the knock of room service I’d have said this was plagiarism.
But he didn’t . . . Taibbi is the evolution of HST because he leaves out the drug rants. Keep writing and I’ll keep reading. I liked your spot on “Democracy Now!” as well. I’m curious if the Democrats will give like they got now that they control congress? Or will the cycle of abuse stop in the Age of Aquarius?

Once again, Mr. Taibbi is on the mark.
I had a Swiss Army Knife ready to go in lieu of a steak knife but the sentiments were the same.
The endless drivel, the same guests saying the same thing and posteuring for air time for 2008, and the fact that every time MSNBC called a race, Matthews explained that calling a race meant that ‘MSNBC projects that AssHole A will win when all the votes are counted.’
My moment of the night came whem Chris Matthews called Herb Kohl, senator from WI, the millionaire owner of the Milwaukee Bulls.
This was the only real reference to sports that needed to be made all night he fucking blew it.
The only good thing about the main network coverage was that it was only and hour long.
I didn’t watch Fox but i bet Brit Hume was sobbing in a fetal position by midnight eastern.
Great Article Matt

Taibbi’s still a douche! That should be the headline of his column…always.

The Election Night Coverage Was Great because Olbermann was one of the Hosts.
Maybe because it was nice to see Blue Spread Across the Country and, I am HAPPY WITH THE VOTERS FOR “GETTING IT”, FIANALLY!
A breath of fresh air from “Reality T.V.” mentality.
It could not have been more suspenseful or Interesting…

Taibbi is a freaking genius. In a nation where so many people have their heads stuck in the sand, Taibbi is a welcome voice.

Have you ever noticed how much Joe Lieberman looks like a belly-button?
Hallzee | 11/10/2006, 9:07 am EST
Matt,
My only question is, why did you feel it was necessary to pop a sleeping pill? Election coverage is enough to put anyone in a coma.
The only thing I wanted to do was slap the grin off of Olberman’s face. But he’s not bias.
Although I did feel that CNN had the best coverage with equal perspective from both sides.
Congratulations to the Democrats and I hope the next two years is not a political witch hunt.
There is much work to do. Be careful what you wish for.

There is only one Hunter Thompson.

Adam–
Commentary normally involves intelligent observations, a point-of-view and facts to back the point-of-view.
Taibbi is like a three year old having a tantrum and throwing his Spaghetti O’s all over the place. He and his pseudo-righteous indignation are no better than Hannity or Limbaugh and, therefore, do not even begin to approximate a Chris Matthews or Keith Olbermann…who at least have a grasping of the concept of dignity (even if theirs is misplaced).
Taibbi may be like Hunter Thompson in that he rants and raves for pages…main difference being Thompson was intelligent. Intelligent enough, anyway, to know that he would be wrong to expect more from politics/society than one big circus.
Jon Stewart, who is wittier and much more insightful than Taibbi could ever even dream of being when he grows up, understands this and is much closer to Thompson’s air.
Taibbi’s misplaced rage is full of juvenile righteous indignation…any true student of history/politics knows that we’ve been getting screwed for years and that there’s nothing new under the sun.

I’ve been curious about what Taibbi thought about The Daily Show, and I still can’t tell: does he or doesn’t he like it?
Is its satire too limp-wristed for the co-founder of The eXile?
Jon | 11/10/2006, 3:04 pm EST
Taibbi appeared on “The Daily Show” after his book “Spanking the Donkey” came out. It was obvious that Stewart and Taibbi were fans of each other’s work. Taibbi laughed at everything Stewart said.
I think it’s odd that Taibbi’s detractors more often are liberals instead of conservatives. Sadly, Taibbi has it right: none of these idiots are capable of lasting change, no matter what side of the aisle they hail from.

Matt. What can we do? How can there ever be hope? You live in a bleak, desperate world, and whilst I agree with you on most things, I need a little optimism if I’m going to carry on living.
Architect of Failure | 11/10/2006, 5:09 pm EST
I know Barack Obama personally. While I don’t like politicians, I do like him. If you are going to judge him before he has a chance… well there’s no hope for the democratic system, is there? Because we’ll never have a leader worth voting for. Never.
Lieberhater | 11/10/2006, 10:23 pm EST
Matt Taibbi’s take on Lieberman’s abominable victory speech was priceless. He offers such a refreshing morning after pill to help us abort the memory of the cliche filled election night coverage. I wish Matt had been on TV that night–maybe next time?
Uncle Mac | 11/11/2006, 4:03 am EST
While I have liked some and disliked some of Matt’s pieces in the past, I came down right in the middle on this one: mediocre, at best.
It’s a big subject and there is so much more to say about it. I guess it takes more than one column to do it justice. Maybe if Matt got to take a crack at it as often as Jon Stewart, he might come close to the genius of said Jon.
I mean, what did anyone expect the politicians to say when they all know they’ll get thirty seconds to four minutes of airtime at most? An in-depth policy discussion? Of course they’re going to regurgitate their mantra for the cycle. This was not the night to get into deep analysis while holding one’s breath watching the returns.
That the talk shows never give much room or time for real discussion is so ingrained that no one ever even tries, and if they do, they’re not asked back.
The line I really liked in Matt’s piece was, “Our national political press is narrowly focused, schooled in inch-deep analysis, and completely results-obsessed. It’s a huge and expensive mechanism bedecked with every conceivable bell and whistle and designed to roam the intellectual range of a chimpanzee.”
That was right on the money and it is the true shame. What’s profoundly sad and disillusioning is that a show that DID have meaningful discussion and analysis wouldn’t survive.
That’s what makes me hold that kitchen knife to my throat, in spirit anyway.

Matt Taibbi makes me laugh hysterically as he points out the ridiculousness of the crap that these pompous TV buffoons spout. What more can one ask of a political writer? Love ya, Matt!
reddirtgirl | 11/11/2006, 12:09 pm EST
Real easy to take a quick swipe at Matt’s work in the post a comment section and think yourself the soul of wit. I thank Matt for his serious approach to his work without taking himself too seriously. Except for the early 80’s when RS sucked, I’ve read it for over 30 years and Matt is the real thing. How many of you one liner critics have been to Iraq to tell the grunts’ story? His article on that trip was on a par with Michael Herr’s great tales of Vietnam in Dispatches.
C Co... aka I Smell Propaganda | 11/11/2006, 5:11 pm EST
I felt the coverage was fine as a whole. It was a little long and drawn-out at times (they should start it an hour later, when more votes are in), but it was pretty much what I expected. Most election coverage has been like this for years, so I’m not sure what Taibbi is talking about.

I’m with you man. But I try to average the reviews from Pitchfork, Spin, and RS to get a true feel for it; like a music Rotten Tomatoes.

Not journalism? Taibbi doesn’t write journalism?
His stuff is great. And I’m a white woman approaching 60 who read every single thing he ever wrote for The eXile because I loved the irreverence & the panache. Also, he and Mark Ames were the only two who had the intelligence to scope the Kosovo War and write the truth about it, which they did with the derision it deserved. One of the better writers around. And he wrote it in the style of the very medium he was covering and commenting on.

Thanks for that, Professor Retard.

Taibbi is the most entertaining political writer in America today. If there’s anyone else event close, I’d love to know his or her name.
As for Brit Hume, has anyone ever reported on his marital life? I used to see him regularly in the elevator in the morning leaving our apartment on Wisconsin Avenue in DC in the late 80s. Apparently he was married at the time, and not living in that building.
Stephen Finch | 11/14/2006, 6:27 pm EST
Taibbi’s article is a fine summation of what I felt when sporadically tuning away from the Midterm Midtacular: That people in their right minds fill fewer than 2-3%(I can’t guess which are which) of America’s publically elected positions. The rest are are rich, power/fame-hungry, or bored assholes (primarily lawyers) who have nothing better to do with their time but make life worse for the rest of us.
Perhaps we should institute “background profession” quotas in the House and Senate. Things might get a little bit more interesting if those who drafted bills had to convince the several hundred “retail manager,” “waiting/restaurant staff,” “plastics assembly-line quality inspector,” and “elementary schoolteacher” representatives that tax cuts for the upper 5% are absolutely necessary for the welfare of this country.

Don’t pull ESPN down to election coverage level. If networks covered the Iraq war like ESPN covers football, we would either be winning or out of there by now.

in the evening to wach and see if
Kieth O could reduce the Righty
dribble of Hardball’s Matthews.
Just hoping Matthews would choke
on his own sh–.

“10:47 p.m. Chris Matthews’ mouth always looks like it just had a cock in it/something about the way he moves his lips/creepy”. Can we assume from this that Matt is a homophobe, or just has an inordinate fear of Chris Matthews?
