Taking Back the House:
Age and Treachery v. Youth and Skill

10/25/06, 1:35 pm EST

DISTRICT: CONNECTICUT’s 5TH (New Britain)
INCUMBENT: Rep. Nancy Johnson (R, twelve terms)
CHALLENGER: State Sen. Chris Murphy (D)
TOP ISSUE: The Medicare fiasco

The anti-incumbent fervor stirred up by the defeat of Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Democratic primary threatens to oust no fewer than three GOP representatives in Connecticut. But the key race involves Johnson, who represents the most conservative district in New England outside of New Hampshire. Johnson, 71, drew national ire over the Medicare benefit she co-sponsored in 2003 that actually prohibits the federal government from negotiating discounts on prescription drugs for the elderly. “The benefit was written for and by the drug industry,” charges Murphy. “And seniors throughout the district are going to be holding her accountable in November.”

Only thirty-three, Murphy has passed major health-care legislation of his own, spearheading a landmark state effort to spend $100 million on the embryonic stem-cell research that Bush used his first and only veto to block. And Murphy has already established a track record of toppling incumbents: As a recent graduate of Williams College, he upset a fourteen-year veteran in the state legislature by literally knocking on every door in the district – some of them twice. “Chris is a rising star,” says Rep. Chris Van Hollen who leads the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Red-To-Blue campaign. “He brings to this race a great mix of both the policy and the politics.”

Murphy is once again hitting the streets. He has embarked on a forty-one town door-knocking tour – and is reaching out to younger voters by posting a daily video of the effort on YouTube. But the GOP incumbent is bankrolled by corporate backers, many of them from outside the district. “Nancy Johnson is a pitbull,” says Carl Forti, spokesman for the National Republican Campaign Committee. “She has got a million more dollars in the bank, and she’s already been on TV for weeks attacking Murphy for raising taxes twenty-seven times.”

Given the widespread anger among voters, however, a big war chest might not be enough this time. “At the end of the day, Nancy Johnson’s money and her campaign skills may allow her to squeeze out a victory,” says Stu Rothenberg, a respected political handicapper. “But the environment’s very bad. If the election is primarily about change, Nancy Johnson can be portrayed as part of the problem.”

12 years? She needs to be gone just on general principal. Talk about a career politician. I haven’t even read the article and I think she should move on. Sheesh. We need term limits for the House and the Senate in a bad, bad way. And we should elect Supreme Court justices instead of them being appointed. No life time appointments either.

The future could be bright . . .

I like the idea of a candidate running around knocking door-to-door and putting it on YouTube. What a creative idea!

The other day I was talking to some people, and we thought, “What if American politics were as diverse as we claim America to be?”

Here we are, the melting pot of the world, and almost every politician is a white guy in his 50s and 60s. What does that say about us? Maybe that we are not as tolerant and open as we claim . . .

If State Sen. Chris Murphy makes an impact with these inventive campaigning techniques then look for politics to represent a more assorted population of Americans.

That’s twelve terms.

Yes, I know it’s twelve terms. My brain decided to type years instead. Twenty four years.

Tim Dickinson, I’m curious when you’ll be reporting on the Google bombing campaign that Democrats are undertaking against Republican candidates…

America’s arrogant entrenchment in Iraq

Never before in our history as a nation have we found ourselves in such an internationally shameful morass. The war in Iraq was conceived from arrogant conceit, initiated through deceit, promoted in greed, and is being prolonged by self-righteous intransigence, in total disregard for all human decency. We Americans are a principled people; still faithfully holding to the hard won tenets of democracy handed down to us from our valorous heritage. Our brave forefathers would be grievously aghast at the conduct of today’s “leaders”. For the sake of all that is cherished in the American dream, we are morally bound to reclaim our democracy and repudiate the despicable actions of the dark and greedy elite. As an American of conscience, I do not lay claim to the despicable actions of this government. They do not represent us, nor should they even be allowed the privilege of continued citizenship. Our unrestrained success at capitalism has unfortunately permitted the overgrowth of huge concentrated monetary power that is now the supreme force behind all of Washington’s political motivations. We cannot in the least rely on this “democracy” to resolve the imbalance of power anymore. The elective process is wholly compromised by the power brokering of big money upon all contenders. Our current-day elections are only voting for Tweedle Dum in place of Tweedle Dee. If we are to revive as a nation, people of means who truly love this country must come forward now to repudiate this corrupt election system. We are crying out for leaders of courage who will dare to stand alone in the face of huge money temptations and dire threats. We must re-incarnate the conviction of the Minutemen and the passion of the Founding Fathers. Our beloved children are dying in Iraq for the sake of Big Oil and multi-national contractors. The peoples of Iraq are barraged by constant horror. We as a people must now be willing to stand up and risk dying right here in the Halls of Congress for the resurrection of our American values.
What folly is the pretense of promoting democracy abroad as our own constitution is being systematically subverted by the White House. The most heinous evil of our times turns out not to be the horrendous attack on the twin towers, but even more so, this administration’s manipulation of our incredulous outrage and sadness in order to serve it’s own greedy designs against Iraq. It is the way of fascist dictators to manipulate tragedies for their own political purposes. It is similarly the tactic employed by our current Washington supremacists. The megalomaniac extremism of Al Qaida proved very convenient to the Military Industrial Complex of Washington. For them, the ever-increasing fanatical instigation of terror resulting from the Iraqi invasion is a convenient wolf threat upon the sheep of America. Let us stop and look up from our fearful pack and recognize the face of the wolf, for the wolf is from among us. Like never before, the American People are being baited to misplaced militarism. Who benefits from this carnage? – the greedy fear mongers of Washington and the power hungry hate mongers of Islamic fundamentalism. They are the dark powers of evil, two sides to the same coin.
There is no possible conventional approach to the resolution of this agony. It is an outrageous impossible contention that we can or should “stay the course”. How many of you will want to be next in sending your sons and daughters to die for Haliburton? How many fired up fundamentalists and angry factions, from how many countries, will be dissuaded by our continued aggression? If the US pulls out now it would certainly look terrible for the arrogant warmongers of Washington. It sure would be a jubilant victory for masses of hateful primitives in the mid-East. No, the day of reckoning has come. I propose: For the first time in the history of the world a remarkable revolutionary concept: a sincere plea for forgiveness, an apologetic proclamation that will forever alter human conflict. We the people of the United States will stand up united and apologize to all the world for allowing ourselves to be misguided into this travesty of a war. We will proclaim our determination to reform our elective process and to allow only sincere dedicated leadership in the future. We will pledge to reign in capitalist expansion. We will disassemble the pentagon and distribute its armaments evenly among the states for safekeeping. We will offer our forces to the pursuit of reconstruction. Our redemption as a progressive democracy is the one and only good that could ever come from this horrendous history lesson. Surely, between the common peace loving peoples of our countries, a sincere apology would be tearfully embraced. Wrenching tears for all of history will flow from every corner of humanity. This is the only hope for our misguided world and truly the only alternative that is viable in coming times. We are a crowded little planet of vying interests and limited resources. The time has come to cooperate as a whole toward global priorities. Human rights and democracy will follow as we evolve in our peaceful co-existence. Territorial conflict and greed for resources is no longer an option for our times or for anyone’s survival in a possible future.

Sara,

After reading your post, I wondered, “What if Jesus himself walked into some Internet Café somewhere and wrote down what you just wrote? What would be the reaction?”

I fear it will be the same as you are going to receive. Most won’t read it all and most will sniff and move on. This country’s just not ready for your message yet. There are a number hereabouts which will say, “Hear, Hear,” but probably to themselves. If you’ve taken any time to read some of the posts herein, you will note a decidedly personal and national narcissism.

If these posters are in any way representative of the rest of the country, your message will fall on deaf ears. More the pity.
