Taking Back the House:
Stick a Fork In Him, He’s Weldon

10/24/06, 4:16 pm EST

DISTRICT: PENNSYLVANIA’s 7TH (suburban Philadelphia)
INCUMBENT: Rep. Curt Weldon (R, ten terms)
CHALLENGER: Retired Vice Adm. Joe Sestak (D)
TOP ISSUE: The Iraq War

A retired three-star admiral, Sestak can be summed up in two words: dream candidate. The highest-ranking military officer ever to run for the House, Sestak served as director of defense policy under Clinton, commanded a 15,000-man battle-carrier group in both Afghanistan and Iraq, holds a doctorate in government from Harvard and retired from the service in 2004 to care for his daughter, who was stricken by a brain tumor. A charismatic speaker, Sestak has also been out-fund-raising Weldon – rare feat for a political novice running against an entrenched incumbent.

Weldon, by contrast, acts more like a frustrated secret agent than the powerful vice chair of the House Armed Services Committee. He keeps a model “suitcase nuke” in his office and has claimed – citing his own “impeccable clandestine source” – that Iranians were plotting to fly a plane into a nuclear reactor near Boston. In his latest move, Weldon proposed a novel – and unconstitutional – approach to Iraq: removing Bush and Rumsfeld from the chain of military command and giving the generals in the field authority to bring the troops home when they see fit.

“Curt Weldon still believes Iraq was the right decision and – despite all studies saying otherwise – still believes that there are WMDs there,” says Sestak, who calls the war a “tragic misadventure” and demands a “date certain” for withdrawing U.S. troops. “We must redeploy in order to refocus our attention on the global security to enhance America’s security.”

Sestak is running in a district that is ripe for a Democratic takeover: The 7th is one of three suburban Philadelphia districts – all currently represented by the GOP – that threw their support to John Kerry in 2004. In the neighboring 6th District, Democratic challenger Lois Murphy is expected to oust GOP incumbent Jim Gerlach, and in the 8th, Iraq vet Patrick Murphy is giving incumbent Mike Fitzpatrick fits.

And it doesn’t hurt that Weldon has, in recent days, been tarred by scandal, as the congressman is now the target of an FBI corruption probe involving Weldon’s lobbyist daughter and the shady Russian clients who extracted favors from her powerful dad.

It’s little mystery that Congressional Quarterly has just shifted this race into the “Leans Democratic” column.

Democrat for Weldon | 10/27/2006, 12:16 am EST

wow….could you get any more bias with this article. I mean im a democrat but Sestek is a fool. Weldon makes this “dream candidate” look like a bumbling idiot. Tim Dickinson must not have seen the debates or talked to the people of PA’s 7th district who for the most part appreciate the years of service Weldon has given us.

Enrique | 10/27/2006, 12:19 am EST

yea…bad article; im a republican and obv voting for Weldon. He’s the man. The 7th District is thriving

Bill | 10/27/2006, 4:14 am EST

Yeh, right. You’re a Democrat.
You guys can’t just can’t stop lying, huh?

Seriously, you clowns are pathetically transparent.

Joe | 10/27/2006, 10:50 am EST

bill you gotta admit this article uses a Sestek quote to describe Weldon’s policy on Iraq. While giving a cut and paste quote to make Weldon look looney. Kinda unfair if i do say so myself

Monica | 10/27/2006, 11:16 am EST

Bill- I wouldn’t be so quick to call that person a liar. A lot of Democrats are voting and have voted for Weldon. If you are a local member of the FOP, Volunteer Firefighters or work at Boeing its pretty safe to say that regardless of prior political affiliation you’ll be voting Weldon back to Congress.

Republican for Sestak | 10/27/2006, 8:23 pm EST

On one hand we have the former commander of the USA Flagship, the USS George Washington in Afghanistan and Iraq plus
31 years of service in the Navy, and holds a doctorate in government from Harvard.
One the other hand we have a 10 term congressman who has a model of a Russian suitcase bomb in his office. As a registered Republican I am not towing the line this time, and after talking to my friends, they feel the same way.

Voter for Weldon | 10/27/2006, 10:07 pm EST

ha i love how people imply Weldon is some type of hardcore republican who is in bed with Bush. He was elected mayor of Marcus Hook on the DEMOCRATIC TICKET TOO!!!! before he ever ran for Congress.

Go Weldon! | 10/27/2006, 10:12 pm EST

…o and btw are you also implying that because Sestek graduated from Harvard and served 30 years in the Navy, that somehow makes him better than a school teacher, volunteer firefighter and dedicated public servant???? Or are you just going by what this article says which of course neglects to mention anything favorable about Weldon.

Charity | 10/27/2006, 10:17 pm EST

Joe- good link….I watched the second debate—Sestek actually went to Harvard????? (did he graduate??? lol). Weldon absolutely smoked him.

Beth C. | 10/27/2006, 11:40 pm EST

Its encouraging to see all this Curt support! He really cares about the district; its such a shame people are out to get him because of Bush’s mistakes. I really don’t care if the Democrats take back the house or senate but I want Curt to stay; he was vital in saving my job at Boeing; its only fair I try to save his job.

JJ | 10/28/2006, 6:12 pm EST

Go Curt Weldon!

Jason | 11/1/2006, 2:23 am EST

Im never reading Rolling Stone again. This liberal trash excuse for a magazine has finally gone over the edge.

Let Them Eat Cake | 11/4/2006, 11:18 am EST

“Sestek” is a fool, according to DforWeldon”-Well, Weldon is another Republican Crook who is dipping his fingers into the Money Pot that Republicans have been feeding off of since they took control of the government…

The only “Fools” are the people wanting to keep a One Party system reigning over our country, while destroying it…

(MSNBC, CNN, FOX, ABC,CBS) are trying very hard to give the Republicans their biased support-they do not want to lose “access to the President” our his Corporate Machine filled with Lobbyists bribing the networks and, Bush’s businesses providing sponsers(OIl, Pharmaceuticals, Insurance Co.)..

Journalism has never sunk so low or attempted to diffuse, pacify, and, sell Bush’s Fascist Policies to the American people.

Greed rules the day and we see how well it’s working for the “betterment” of our country…

To want One Corrupt Party to Continue its Reign of Terror in our country makes You The Fool….

Weldon is just another example of what the GOP is doing with their “power” and our Money-Abusing it and Misusing it until We ARE All DONE-Not Just WELDON….

Neil | 11/7/2006, 11:32 am EST

Weldon is a crazy crook and an unabashed apologist for the failures of Bush. His ongoing insinuations that there really were WMD make him an embarassment. Go Sestak!
