Bloomberg ‘08? A Year for the “Billionaire Populist”

8/23/06, 11:33 am EST

Bloomberg, Republican, President

Does a Republican billionaire (and mayor of New York City) stand a chance to take the White House? (A taste of Bloomberg’s candor: He says America is “too freaked out” about terrorism, that smoking poses a far bigger risk.) Check out our profile of Mayor Mike and debate whether a hyperefficient businessman can bridge the country’s red-blue divide.

Tim R. | 8/23/2006, 12:32 pm EST

I’d rather eat my own feces (with relish!) than vote for Bloomberg under any circumstance.

RogerG | 8/23/2006, 12:34 pm EST

I think we need a new type of president and I’d be willing to give Bloomberg a chance.

david | 8/23/2006, 12:38 pm EST

He’s way, way better than any other Republican, and more honest and principled than a number of Dems, too.

ginny | 8/23/2006, 12:44 pm EST

absolutely…someone who understands that individuals must rely on themselves and not the gov’t…also Americans ARE too freaked out about terrorism…but isn’t that the WH plan? He would get my vote

JimmyC | 8/23/2006, 1:10 pm EST

American’s long for an “outsider” who can “reform” Washington. Unfortunately, that would be like sending Pee Wee Herman into the Fight Club. Like it or not, the snakes are there, they have been there a long time, they will remain there. They might give you a cookie or two, but don’t expect to drink out of the punchbowl.

DavidB | 8/23/2006, 1:11 pm EST

In a heartbeat. This country needs him. Now. Just imagining what moving this country towards energy independence through hybrid and other technologies gives me a woodie.

lu motley | 8/23/2006, 1:36 pm EST

Though I distain Tim’s use of words in the above comment I strongly concur. I am tired of rich boys who can’t feel what the common man feels. Where are the
good minds with good ethics who still care waht happens to the common man/woman?

Rugmaster | 8/23/2006, 1:36 pm EST

Looks good to me.

Dream Team: Dem House, Dem Senate, and President Bloomberg to keep them honest.

David | 8/23/2006, 1:38 pm EST

Absolutely. While Republicans have gotten all enamored with Rudy after his 9/11 performance, Bloomberg has led the city far better and far less contentiously than his predecessor. He would be an excellent Independent candidate (Obama as VP?), and his determination to base his political opinions on his personal beliefs is unbelievably admirable in this age of ridiculous partisanship. Too bad you’ve got to be a billionaire to speak your mind.

Kripe | 8/23/2006, 1:39 pm EST

I’m usually suspicious of technocratic types–and I deeply dislike “centrists” like Joe Lieberman and Hillary Clinton–but I would seriusly consider voting for Bloomberg…if he runs as an Independent.

Eric | 8/23/2006, 2:08 pm EST

Though I’ve voted for Republicans in the past, there isn’t a SINGLE Republican on the horizon I trust even for a second. They all have round heels…it’s a requirement.

I would vote for a Democrat, but I’d have to hold my nose.

But the Rolling Stone article makes me want to know a lot more about Bloomberg. SOMEBODY is going to have the management experience to pull together the HUGE pile of crap the Bush Administration will be leaving behind.

madamab | 8/23/2006, 2:11 pm EST

As a proud New Yorker, I see Bloomberg’s NYC reflecting George Bush’s America: Richer is Better. The giant stores are moving in and the small mom-and-pop boutiques are moving out. Unless you are a millionaire, have roommates or somehow found a rent-controlled or stabilized apartment, you cannot afford any decent housing in New York whatsoever. The gap between rich and poor here is the widest in any city in the nation, and the schools in the inner city areas are crumbling disasters.

Conclusion: Bloomberg is a Bush Republican through-and-through, despite Rolling Stone’s drooling and fawning profile (omitted was Bloomberg’s recent gift to the RNC of $2 million – some bipartisan!). He may disagree with Bush on some issues (of course he’s going to say don’t worry about terrorism, all he cares about is tourists coming here to generate more $$$), but he is still a billionaire who favors corporations over people. I will never, ever forgive him for bringing the Republican convention here – it was an insult to have those who allowed 9/11 to happen parading their corruption, incompetence and ignorance here, of all places! He has never gotten my vote and he never will.

swankenheimer | 8/23/2006, 2:30 pm EST

I will definitely vote for Bloomberg for President. Though he can’t win. Remember the furor that arose when the Republicans lost in 2000? What do you think will happen to Bloomie when he wins in 2008 – two parties suing for review of the votes in every state, and no-one on the high court to help him since he has no history of patronage. And bet for certain that Dems break out the lawyers first!

Jesse C. | 8/23/2006, 2:31 pm EST

I would vote for him in an instant. Even though we dont know who is running in 08 yet I am confident he would make the best candidate.

As for Tim R. that is freaking gross man. You should maybe get your head checked before you do anything.

swankenheimer | 8/23/2006, 2:35 pm EST

I should add that Bloomberg will win, but he’ll never get to see the inside of the White House. Dems and Reps lawyers will see to that. Nancy Pelosi will be President for a year while it gets sorted out.

birdseye | 8/23/2006, 3:00 pm EST

Why not?! Let’s get rid of the sleezy Beltway crowd that take biz’ money, tell us what we want to hear to get re-elected, and then do what they want to do for biz anyway.

But then pols and honesty are an oximoron, and that’s while Mike won’t win.

The ignorant electorate prefer sand blown into their eyes be the Hillary, Frist -Delay crowd.

Sam | 8/23/2006, 3:41 pm EST

I’d vote for him in a New York minute. Proven success, above the usual political nonsense and beholding to no business interest after he’s in office. Sounds like a formula to finally have the right decisions made in Washington.

b-real | 8/23/2006, 3:53 pm EST

Come on people bloomberg is a scumbag. switches to the repubs after he becomes rich.
no way I would vote for him.

dajafi | 8/23/2006, 4:52 pm EST

I’d love to have the chance to vote for Bloomberg. He’s a progressive technocrat who couldn’t care less about any of the “culture war” bullshit that has fouled our politics for decades. He’s screwed around, tried drugs, etc.

He also believes, devoutly, in the power of government to make positive changes in peoples’ lives. Which is why he’s not, and never will be, a “real” Republican in the modern sense of that word.

John Hall | 8/23/2006, 10:32 pm EST

If you saw his reaction to the Queens blackouts, and heard how he wants to put more money into anti-smoking campaigns than helping with the health care of 9/11 workers, you might think differently.

Maxter | 8/24/2006, 9:41 pm EST

bloomberg is great on education, great on gun control, great on 1st Amendment issues, great on affordable housing, and great on economic devel and jobs. he’s figured out how to move things without being an ideologue. kind of refreshing.

Sean | 8/25/2006, 11:38 am EST

I dunno, I mean he seems fine but I don’t know if I want him in charge should another 9/11 take place. Say what you will about Bush, but sometimes you need a president that’s willing to fuck shit up from time to time.

And I’m sorry to say that the days of good ol’ boy politicians are far gone. Do you think you can win an election without the cash? No way. No funds for your campaign, no presidency.

Dan | 8/25/2006, 12:07 pm EST

Talking politics on Rolling Stone is lllaammmeee-ooooo.
Come on, admit it. And Michael Bloomberg of all people! Maybe we could discuss math.

Snootchy | 8/25/2006, 12:18 pm EST

I atill don’t think Bloomberg would get nominated by the Republicans. They are controlled by the Christian Right. Their candidate is going to be someone who is Pro-Life and against abortion. Bloomberg doesn’t stand a chance in his own party.

Snootchy | 8/25/2006, 12:20 pm EST

its too bad other Repubs won’t accept him because he’s a damn good progressive mayor who has taken control of NYC and really run it wonderfully.

JB | 8/25/2006, 12:40 pm EST

Yeah there are no “Rich Democrats”, just ask John Kerry and his fleet of SUV’s and 3 Mansions. Since Bloomberg is a Republican, somehow the Leftist media finds to slam him for having money—unbelievable!

John | 8/25/2006, 12:50 pm EST

One of my major concerns would be will someone who is obviously a very smart businessman, when given the almost umlimited power of the Presidency, continue or even accelerate the seeming GOP tradition of selling out the USA via taxpayer funded contracts or legislation to his well connected rich friends. My hope would be that if given the chance he would be the first GOP prez to have the integrity and the balls not to do that. But I live in the real world, and based on the actions of the current occupant of the White House, I don’t think that would happen.

Howdy | 8/25/2006, 3:54 pm EST

Why doesn’t this magazine stick to music? “Another Rich Republican” is such a silly headline. Next time some self-righteous pop star makes some supposedly controversial remarks, I want to see a tag line starting with “Another Rich and Pompeous Rock Star Criticizes Bush.”

Anonymous | 8/25/2006, 5:16 pm EST

Bloomberg isn’t even really a Republican. His change of affiliation was only to avoid a primary challenger. I hope everyone knows that.

Having said this, I think he would make an outstanding GOP nominee!

:)

maninthebluehouse | 8/26/2006, 3:46 am EST

it’s not to vote for a rich republican its to vote for someone who is not rich and privliged like every other president has been

Capitalist Pig | 8/26/2006, 10:55 am EST

I am glad all the democrats are working class stiffs and not rich like Ted Kennedy, Algore, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, and Ned Lamont…wait those are democrats!!

Gloria AMERICAN!! | 8/26/2006, 12:21 pm EST

so i see we have focused the next election on money…why cant a democrat be rich AND still want to help the American public? Not all republicians r assholes so…why dont WE the people who are suppose to be ready for a change..CHANGE?!!!! Do what we say and say what we mean…stop the whining and DO something..I am trying but I need help! STOP CRYING AND BELLY ACHING AND DO SOMETHING! If we all were able to trust one another as neighbors again just maybe we can find a canidate who can help lead this country back to where is should be…#1

Concerned citizen | 8/26/2006, 9:18 pm EST

I live/work in NYC and I want to like the guy, but he’s really made a complete mess of the schools there. Everything is much worse than before he took office. He hasn’t even given Principals a contract since 2003. It’s like he just doesn’t care about kids or education at all.

Justin | 8/26/2006, 10:19 pm EST

Agreed. His record on education is a sham and his concern for anyone other than his elite circle is too. The US would be in alot of trouble if he became president.

Jack | 8/27/2006, 6:12 am EST

From what i’ve heard, he sounds good. Being a strong conservative a republican is better than any trouble making democrat

Amit of Sw VA | 8/27/2006, 2:48 pm EST

Being someone with NYC roots, I’m glad to see this rumor surfacing more. Since the last election, I thought there may be a possibility in ‘08 of being more than just 2 major candidates. And in the last few months, I thought there’s a good possibility that because conservatives are so outraged about illegal immigration and liberals are so outraged about the Iraq war that Tom Tancredo and John Edwards could win their parties’ nominations. If that sequence happens, I really believe Bloomberg would jump in. Why? We know he can’t put up with Tancredo’s position on illegal immigration, but he also wouldn’t tolerate Edwards’ position on trade. Bloomberg is a devout internationalist. He can afford to not be on the sidelines. He can do it. I really think that three-way race would be interesting. It’ll have people recalling another three-way race involving a billionaire i.e. ‘92. I don’t believe he would run for the GOP nomination. He won’t run at all if there’s someone he can vote for. He won’t openly endorse Hillary, but he could vote for her. And he’ll go for the GOP nominee if it’s a Pataki-Hagel-Giuliani-McCain type (maybe Frist). If nominations are won by Hillary and one of these guys, look for Jim Gilchrist and Ralph Nader to make serious runs and we could have a four-way race!

ANdy | 8/28/2006, 9:13 am EST

How is another “rich, Republican” president that much different than all the rich, Democratic presidents we’ve ever had?

Diane | 8/28/2006, 8:41 pm EST

Republican or Democrat aside, he does not fit the box. He is smart successful and gets the job done. I would vote for that.
Great article!

DonaTheTeacher | 8/30/2006, 5:19 pm EST

Bloomberg buys his own press. Because he controls the press, it’s hard for people to learn the truth: Bloomberg believes he knows what’s best about everything and doesn’t bother to consult with the people who do the day to day work in NYC. Ask any civil servant — from teachers to sanitation to cops to fire to water and environmental protection — and he or she will tell you that it will take decades to repair the damage this man has done to this City. Bloomie’s press people make Fox News look like it really IS fair and balanced.

Cornhusker | 8/31/2006, 12:17 pm EST

I wouldn’t vote for ANY candidate who would raise my taxes. Based on his past actions, I believe Bloomberg would raise our taxes…not good.

The lower the taxes, the better off we all are.

julieN | 9/3/2006, 11:00 pm EST

enuf with the obsession with tax cuts. we have a republican president and congress, are you really better off financially? where’s the windfall? i think i got a $300 dollar check a few years back. woo hoo…think i’ll go buy a house on the beach.

gLuv | 9/6/2006, 1:54 pm EST

These days, people like everything packaged neatly in a little box with a label. Unfortunately, life doesnt work like that. There is no one who is PERFECT. There r good and bad aspects to every possible candidate. BUT…DC politics have gotten so outta control and far away from what gov is supposed to b about, that it takes a guy like bloomerg to change things. NYC isnt perfect today, but he’s done so many good things. Things r always going to b rough in DC, but Id rather have a guy like Bloomberg, who is, at a minimum, going to be HONEST and tell it like it is. Not someone like the rest, who will smile for the cams and pretend everything is ok while the ship is sinking.

DFM1967 | 9/17/2006, 9:55 pm EST

Bloomberg would be assailed by so many interest groups-not judt the NRA. He’d get less votes than Perot. He’s a billionaire rich boy who only cares about his own power and his Wall Street buddies.

MythMan J | 9/20/2006, 12:23 pm EST

I don’t know; he’s old, he’s frickin` rich … sounds to me like a good decision!

Michael | 9/29/2006, 10:46 pm EST

Bloomberg has been a disaster for NYC. There is no way I would vote for him for president.

Sam C. | 10/4/2006, 5:02 pm EST

I agree with RogerG, we need a new type of president that is less concerned about his party and more concerned about the better of the country as a whole. Although I think it is far too soon for this to happen due to our countries ridiculous importance on party policy.

Cicero | 10/11/2006, 1:19 pm EST

It’s better to elect a wealthy man President than a middle-class one. A billionaire cannot be bought; he is immune to bribery, regardless of his own personal ethics.

CGEffect | 10/12/2006, 5:34 pm EST

This is a man who switched parties to avoid a harder primary. He cannot be trusted. Plus, he is clueless when it comes to dealing with unions, he’s far from polished, plus this fact and this goes for Rudy: How can you make a jump from Mayor to President? How could that work? He’s an average Mayor in my opinion, him trying to become President is a scary thought. Heres to hopinghe spends his money through philanthropy and just that 2008 and beyond.

God this article is sickening. Applauding first Guiliani’s ‘innovative’ ’sealing off’ of ghettos and then Bloomberg’s ‘alternative’ strategy of simple gentrification. Would it have killed the idiot that wrote this article to talk to one detractor? One member of one union? One advocate of affordable housing?

Only in the American press could a billionaire be credibly offered as a some disinterested ‘alternative’ to business as usual.

Bloomberg has been beneath contempt on at least two counts: his authoritarian suppression of the anti-war movement and in his disgusting slandering of the transit union.

He’s billionaire. That means he’s not like you. Not even a little.

Ron Paul or bust

Chris G | 12/24/2007, 11:13 am EST

Mike Bloomberg has been such an asset to New York. Due to term limits, he will move on. The next logical step would be to run for President. He is absolutely the gold standard in executive management. Read more here:

I am a long-time democrat but if the choice was between Hillary and M Bloomberg, I’d vote for him in an instant – and gladly.

Nick | 1/24/2008, 1:01 am EST

I would happily cast the vote for Bloomberg. Yeah, he’s rich…and unlike virtually everyone else in politics he made his own money. Look up the back story — the Newsweek piece from last month was great.

Bloomberg strays from the GOP (which he is no longer part of) on social issues. And frankly, with the direction of the economy I wouldn’t mind having a president who can add.

Oh yeah, and those Billions of dollars also mean he is in nobody’s pocket. (Lobbyists, etc).

I always vote democratic, but each year..Will Rodgers words become truer and truer: ” I am not part of any organized political party, I am a democrat” and I would die before casting a vote for any republican..For the Love of God people are you seeing the partisian politics on both side which is putting the interest of those parties before the interest of this country we all Love so much..do you really believe this year on either side of the fence is going to be different?…Please put some thought to this and consider joining me in support of a man who (at the very least)will shake the poltical tree so hard that all these fakes and phonies will fall out and at the very most lead us back to the greatness we all crave…please consider holding a ” I LIKE MIKE!!” sign..before Jefferson’s words “What keeps a democracy healthy is the treat of revolution” come even closer to us..WAKE UP EVERYONE!!!

Joseph (works NYC lives in NJ) | 1/26/2008, 7:23 pm EST

I am not Jewish…but say proudly…”Mike is a Mensch” and Tim R. we are all hoping you get to eat your own feces..any chance for a video?

Mike F. | 1/31/2008, 10:09 am EST

Mike Bloomberg seems to be the best fit for the job of president. He is one of the greatest mayors New York City ever had and the only person running who isn’t corrupt, extreamly religious, inexperienced, insane, or an antichrist

People with gray cells know how a nice oligarch got to be mayor(perhaps governor too) of NYC. $$$ is power = media is power. I know…he got it the hard way (cough). Well, (Reagan’s word), he will only have “support” in NY, LA, Miami, Chicago, Cleveland Hgts,
Long Island, NJ, CT, ……you know. The rest of us out here still understand the situation. Israel already gets an un-voted rip-roaring share of our Sheeple tax dollars. Oi!
