Bloggers! Are You Undermining Democracy?

8/22/06, 6:34 pm EST

In his latest online-only column, Matt Taibbi is once again slamming the Democratic Leadership Council and its timid masters for their anti-democratic fear of young people with computers. He writes that the Democrats have made the mistake of governing without actual input from actual voters. Check out the column and share your thoughts below.

No wonder this country is such a bubbling cluster fuck. One party panders to the rich, the christian, and the corporate. The other party panders to anyone who will give them money, corporate and private. And neither really gives a fuck about any of us, except in November.
WE NEED ANOTHER PARTY! Unfortunately, the cocksuckers that have to change the rules/laws are the ones that are reaping all the benefits of the unchecked and unballanced. Can’t we just start over. Design a new set of standards for that cancer we call politics.

Peter | 8/23/2006, 10:53 am EST

Thank God for you people. If it wasn’t for the “net roots” movement, the Democrate Party might have a real shot at winning an election. Whew!

Sam D | 8/23/2006, 11:00 am EST

How does a semi-rabid rant like this get published? Some guy types out whatever angry thoughts pop into his head and it’s worthy of the attention of thousands of readers? What a joke.

da 12th anon | 8/23/2006, 11:20 am EST

Gee JackD, get a grip. You do need another party and as a Republician with a pefect voting records going back to 1964, I hope you get it.
Go ahead, dismember the Demonrats. Since I reached my majority, the Donks have gone from 40+ % of registered voters to almost 30 %. I say keep up the good work. I am somewhat perplexed about why you think lowering that percentage to 20 or less will help out your cause, but if it works for you, it works for me.
America NEEDS a two party system. The sooner the Democrats shed themselves of their Dhimmi element, the better off America will be.
That might be a good name for your new party, the Dhimmi Party. You can put all the anti-war types there and see how many votes you can get. At least money will be no problem, Iran and the KSA will be more then happy to fund you. Just as Soros is doing for the democrats.

“There is no avoiding war; it can only be postponed to the advantage of
others.”
- Niccolò Machiavelli

Your problem is that there is no logic available to you and your ilk that will change the minds of your opponents. I can produce your body weight in pixels of logiacal arguements supporting the WoT, but as a famous man once said;
‘You cannot reason a man out of a position he wasn’t reasoned into’ or something like that.
The Anit-war crowd is driven by shrill emontion, which is unsavory to rational people.
Please provide a rational reason why we should allow a bunch of 7th century AD. religious fanatics take over 21st century America?
If you think it’s can’t be done, I can provide a few ways it can be done.

Chris | 8/23/2006, 11:23 am EST

JACK D – Maybe you people should try and create a third party – Oh, wait, you did try that -in 2000 with Ralph Nader and it gave us George W. Bush. You McGovernites (do any of you nutroots really know who McGovern was?). You people have quite a resume now… let’s see you handed the country to Nixon, Reagan and two Bushes… Good job!

thibaud | 8/23/2006, 11:55 am EST

This sounds like a Rovian trick: put an obscure journalist’s byline at the top of a Rolling Stone piece and lard it with obscenities and mindless invective aimed at the Dem leadership. All in defense of that nasty racist and hatemonger, Sharpton.

Well done, Karl.

Dem-O | 8/23/2006, 12:14 pm EST

As a registered Democrat who both worked for Jerry Brown in ‘92 and voted twice for George Bush, I applaud the article. RS has too-often been a mouthpiece for the Hamptons wing of the democratic party. There’s still time for the party to find its soul… Maybe.

Jim | 8/23/2006, 12:15 pm EST

Hopefully the quieter readers out there actually, you know, READ the article posted here. Jesus Christ on a stick…

I love the recent trend of politicians complaining about people voting for people who aren’t them-Super Joe Lieberman was just on Imus this morning griping about how he refuses to let down voters who didn’t vote for him…by forcing them to not vote for him again.

As for the NY1 decision, I just assumed it was a tactic designed to remind people that NY1 still exists. I know I’d forgotten about them-clever bastards!

Shark 333 | 8/23/2006, 12:25 pm EST

PLEASE put this guy in charge of the DNC. I gave $200 to Nader in 2000 in hopes of undermining Gore. Two tax cuts later, that investement has had great ROI. We control our lunatics on the right. Thank goodness the left has decided to let the nutroots folks steer their ship. Enjoy the McCain or Rudy administration in 08.

RCGLAD | 8/23/2006, 1:32 pm EST

THE LOW POST: Off With Their Heads
The Democrats walk themselves to the gallows…

What you apparently refuse to acknowledge it’s the ideology that links Sharpton and the lefty Bloggers…their weakness on all things related to national secruity.

But lefties like you would rather bait people on race, so it doesn’t surprise…

Jack D | 8/23/2006, 3:12 pm EST

#12,
What the hell are you talking about? Yeah, the two party system has worked like a charm for the last 30 years or so. I’m not a Dem. or Rep. so why would I give a shit about what a third party does to the other two. All I want is to give ourselves another choice, rather than trying to choose between bad VS worse, and for this country to STOP with the conservative VS liberal, christian VS secular, Rep. VS Dem. crap. We’re ALL on the same team you idiots. The only cause I have is a better America, people that actually work together to improve this country rather than try to undermine the other side. It’s like fucking high school again. Except they’re better at getting shit done as a group than the politicians of today. And finally, I am not anti-war, just anti-war for personal and financial gain. Afghanistan I supported, Iraq is just an administration trying to secure their place in history, which will happen, just not with the headlines Georgie and his buddies had hoped for. This isn’t Rome, but, if we stay on this path we will end up like the Romans.

Kelly A | 8/23/2006, 3:14 pm EST

First off, don’t think for a second that I think the Democratic leadership is doing a sufficient job. However, where the hell do you come off? Rahm Emmanuel is a cock? Nice. Next you’ll be saying that Howard Dean has cooties and have the remainder of your readers thinking back to the good ol’ name calling days of the fourth grade!

Ranting about the reasons why the Democrats aren’t working doesn’t help SOLVE THE PROBLEM. Positive actions give way to positive results. You want to get Bush out of power? You want the Democratic party that will stand up and fight for what you believe in? Then do more than post some shitty name-calling article on a website! That’s what Rahm is talking about when he mentions bloggers and Al Sharpton. Words are great, but ACTIONS get the job done.

mHainds | 8/23/2006, 4:11 pm EST

I agree with Taibbi. Down with the DLC! I can’t see a dime’s with of difference between them and the RNC. The people are taking back their power and votes and it has the establishment quaking in their boots. This is the most refreshing political development in decades. Pols like Lamont, Feingold, and Dean give us something worth cheering, donating, supporting, and voting for. And the DLC can go to hell if they don’t like it.

C Co... aka I Smell Propaganda | 8/23/2006, 5:16 pm EST

What Democratic leadership? Do you really need a coucil for people whose stance is “Bush sucks/We’re good.” Yeah, rally behind that. A large majority of the people who have that stance as a political front aren’t even voting. Which is fine by me. Leave voting to people responsible enough to learn the issues (avoiding the propaganda) and make a viable decision in choosing their leader. The truth is a lot of bloggers don’t fall into that category. The Democratic Party might have support from liberal bloggers, but if they’re too stoned or busy watching a Daily Show marathon on election day, it doesn’t do them any good. What it is good for is the intelligent voters who won’t have to have their votes diluted by people who talk a lot of shit, but could care less in the long haul. Maybe the bloggers want to loose because if they did make a decision that turned out poorly for them they couldn’t blame it on someone else. Who am I kidding; they would blame someone else anyway.

Andy | 8/23/2006, 6:31 pm EST

I think they (Dem’s) do the right thing. Would they like to have the presidency, to do the clean-up and then be blamed that they’re nopt patriots? That they cut and run?
All they need is not to get into the white house.

Eric | 8/23/2006, 6:39 pm EST

While I agree with your general assessment of the DLC, as well as your contention that Rham Emmanuel’s comment represents a moronic attempt to marginalize bloggers through a Rovian guilt by association tactic, (OK that was a long qualification..) I think you’re a little off on your facts in terms of Emmanuel’s affiliation w the DLC and Lieberman. I distinctly recall reading a quote by R.E. right before or after the primary in which he essentially bit Lieberman’s head off for running as an independent. While it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see R.E. playing a Machievellian game with rivals in the blogosphere, I don’t think he’s quite the DLC tool you make him out to be. He’s more of a Party Operative. The perverbial hatchet man willing to spill blood for the party establishment. When he smacks insurgents from the blogosphere I don’t like it, but I gotta say I like seeing him rip apart Lieberman and the various Republicans he’s crossed paths with over the years.

Evrviglnt | 8/23/2006, 6:47 pm EST

I thought the article was really insightful – The Democratic party faithful do need to start questioning their party administration, they’ve been losing for years now. What’s more interesting is getting to see the reaction of those Nedheads when they find the majority of main stream Dems are not so different from Repubs!

The far left is begging for a fight – they’re challenging the father for control of the family. It’s fun to watch. If it ever came down to unveiling the true notions of the majority of registered Dems, it ain’t Kos or Michael Moore supporters! Be careful what you wish for, it just might end up saving your party!

Steve-o | 8/23/2006, 7:20 pm EST

There have been times when I have been worried about the fall elections, and the big race in 2008. This article makes me feel confident that Democrats will find a way to go down the tubes again, thank you very much, my day is made.

Phil | 8/23/2006, 9:40 pm EST

There isn’t really a Democratic party anymore; it’s just this ideal we try to subscribe to when an election year comes around, and then act all surprised when everything turns out basically the same as it would if only one party was in power.

I’ve never really been one to advocate open and total revolution, but short of that (against the DLC, and the party leadership as a whole), I can’t really see this trend reversing itself.

Flip-Flop | 8/23/2006, 10:18 pm EST

Does Taibbi realize what a hypocrite he is? I still remember the sleazy hatchet job Taibbi performed on Howard Dean for the Nation during the presidential nomination, bumming out a lot of us on the left who trusted Taibbi’s article. It made it easier for us to lose enthusiasm for Dean’s campaign and get cynical again. It’s called “Dean-A-Palooza” and it paints Dean as little more than a cleverly repackaged mainstream Democrat posing as an insurgent. Now that Taibbi is trying to shore up his progressive/alternative credibility (after his crypto- right-wing Iraq article fiasco), he wants us to believe that all along it was those other, bad people–you know, from the DLC–who took down the great Howard Dean. Nice try. Next time, don’t forget that we all have google.

pol·i·tics audio (pl-tks) KEY

NOUN:

1. (used with a sing. verb)
1. The art or science of government or governing, especially the governing of a political entity, such as a nation, and the administration and control of its internal and external affairs.
2. Political science.
2. (used with a sing. or pl. verb)
1. The activities or affairs engaged in by a government, politician, or political party: “All politics is local” (Thomas P. O’Neill, Jr.). “Politics have appealed to me since I was at Oxford because they are exciting morning, noon, and night” (Jeffrey Archer).
2. The methods or tactics involved in managing a state or government: The politics of the former regime were rejected by the new government leadership. If the politics of the conservative government now borders on the repressive, what can be expected when the economy falters?
3. (used with a sing. or pl. verb) Political life: studied law with a view to going into politics; felt that politics was a worthwhile career.
4. (used with a sing. or pl. verb) Intrigue or maneuvering within a political unit or group in order to gain control or power: Partisan politics is often an obstruction to good government. Office politics are often debilitating and counterproductive.
5. (used with a sing. or pl. verb) Political attitudes and positions: His politics on that issue is his own business. Your politics are clearly more liberal than mine.
6. (used with a sing. or pl. verb) The often internally conflicting interrelationships among people in a society.

Usage Note:
Politics, although plural in form, takes a singular verb when used to refer to the art or science of governing or to political science: Politics has been a concern of philosophers since Plato. But in its other senses politics can take either a singular or plural verb. Many other nouns that end in -ics behave similarly, and the user is advised to consult specific entries for precise information.

I actually prefer this one;

“The word ‘politics’ is derived from the word ‘poly’, meaning ‘many’, and the word ‘ticks’, meaning ‘blood sucking parasites’.”
Larry Hardiman

Although this one is pretty good also;

“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.”
Ernest Benn

And to close;

“The problem with political jokes is they get elected.”
Henry Cate VII

What the left can’t get a grip on is that Iran WANTS War against the USA. They have been waging war against us since ‘79.
It’s pissing them off that we won’t fight back. No matter who was elected President in 2000, the US would have invaded Iraq. It was and is to ONLY viable military option to prepare for military action( Invasion) against Iran.
The Choices Iran has left America is Surrender, Fight now, or Fight later, after they have the bomb.
You pays your money and you takes your choice. Watch the wheel spin round and round.
The fact that Iran has spent almost 3 decades pushing America into making a choice among the bad or worst, show that they are much better at politics then America is, espically considering the USA has all the normal political advantages.

Sounds like someones are accepting the premise of Confessions of an Economic Hitman. More of us, grass/netroots, should do so.

Eriecanaller | 8/25/2006, 2:49 pm EST

Taibbi may have a point here, but who would know since he has a history of mendaciousness in covering the few real leaders in Democratic politics. Dean has already been mentioned, but that was as nothing compared to the nasty, biased hatchet job Taibbi did on Wesley Clark. The piece on Clark as NATO commander was replete with inaccuracies, false assertions, and just plain lies, since the truth was widely known and available and Taibbi willfully chose to ignore it. Since then I take everything written by Taibbi with a large block of salt.

Skath | 8/25/2006, 5:00 pm EST

Fact is, Taibbi’s right. Here in MN, we were TOLD by the DNC (and presumably DLC) that Klobuchar was going to be our next senator. Her main challenger, Wetterling, dropped out under national party pressure and changed to the congressional race in her district. I told Klobuchar’s campaign manager that mediocre doesn’t capture the middle, the middle is looking for someone with a strong stance. I know middle-of-the-road people who have voted for Bush and Wellstone both “because they knew where they stood.” It’s time for Democrats to take a stance, and get out of the business of invading countries for their oil. Thanks to Rolling Stone for publishing some truth, as opposed to a lot of other rags who don’t or won’t.

‘We the bloggers, in order to form a more perfect union”

Gregory Frost | 8/26/2006, 2:09 pm EST

Spot on, Mr. Taibbi. The DLC is a great beltway trainwreck. They keep pulling their pusillanimous candidates out of the wreckage and then spend the rest of the campaign in a vain attempt to convince you they have spines. Anyone who has watched Mrs. Clinton striking poses on important issues in the past few months cannot possibly have missed the cynicism of the activity. Once again the DLC operates with those sound-deadening earplugs in so they can’t hear the voters crying out for real, substantive change, instead of another wimp from the wreckage.

Joe F | 8/28/2006, 3:55 pm EST

DLC tries to win by being slightly to the left of The Repubs. They want to run things but they won’t actually do much. Th great question for politicians is are you running to do something or to be something. Feingold does well in Wisconsin and is even respected by the more thoughtful Kool Aid drinkers because people know where he stands and that does matter.

Polisci prof | 8/28/2006, 6:56 pm EST

In fairness to Representative Emmanuel, the comment linking leftist bloggers to Sharpton was made because of the recent Lamont victory in Conneticut. There Lamont was the left blog favored candidate who was flanked by Sharpton at his victory speech. Matt would have done well to consider this.
