Rocky Mountain High: Dope Measure on Colorado Ballot

8/16/06, 5:46 pm EST

The nonprofit group SAFER (Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation) is building on its success in de-criminalizing personal pot use in Denver. It announced today that it has gathered enough signatures to place a measure on Colorado’s November ballot that would make it legal for residents 21 and over to posess and use an ounce of marijuana. From the group’s press release:

“The campaign will highlight the hypocrisy of laws that prohibit the use of marijuana while allowing and even encouraging the use of alcohol, an infinitely more harmful drug,” said SAFER Campaign Director Mason Tvert.

“We will be asking Colorado Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave why she continues to accept so much money from the National Beer Wholesaler’s Association – the primary lobbying arm of the beer, wine and liquor industry – when police in her district attribute its above-average rate of rape there to above-average alcohol consumption.

“And we expect Colorado gubernatorial candidate Bill Ritter to explain why he is publicly opposing this initiative despite the fact that he used marijuana on multiple occasions,” Tvert said. “There is little doubt he would have gone on to become Denver’s district attorney and a frontrunner in the race for Colorado’s highest office had he been arrested and prosecuted for his choice to use marijuana. This just goes to show that many responsible, hard-working people around Colorado can choose to use marijuana – much like many choose to use alcohol – and they are not the drug addicts and deadbeats our opponents would like to have people think.”

Makes me want to move to Denver, just so I can vote on this one. If the big alcohol and paper compamies try to block this I will come un-glued. Leave it to the people, not the corporations.

Capitalist Pig | 8/16/2006, 8:51 pm EST

Come on Jack D..First big oil, now big alcohol. But before you blow a gasket, I actually agree with you on this one, for the most part. The drug war is a terrible failure, and another approach must be tried. I would presonally decrimalize all drugs to some degree, and address the matter as a public health issue, not a criminal issue.

I really don’t think “big alcohol” is behind the weed laws, or not as much as some people believe. No doubt they spend alot of money on lobbying, etc. But I really believe the only reason alcohol is legal is because it has been with for so long, and has been socially accepted for so long. They can’t put the jennie back in the bottle. They tried once and that went very badly. If alcohol were “invented” today, it would never get legalized.

But I do think the weed proponents should be honest and not try to pass pot off as totally harmless. No drug is totally harmless, and all have the potential for abuse. Pot is one of the safest, but they should be honest about the negatives. It really works better with the public, people are not stupid.

Jack D | 8/16/2006, 9:11 pm EST

Agreed C-Pig. I wasn’t trying to blame alcohol, just hoping they stay out of it. I know that William Randolph Hurst had a big hand in making it illegal in the first place, because of the competition with hemp and his paper factories. I can just see them (Anheiser & Miller)thinking that if mary jane is legalized they might lose sales of beer to people buying more weed. It does have its own psychosematic addiction qualities. (personal experience)

tim dickinson | 8/17/2006, 1:56 am EST

capitalist pig is really tim dickinson in disguise

zach | 8/17/2006, 9:56 am EST

I believe the only reason marajauna is not legal, is that the goverment cannot tax it. Since alcohol has been around so long, the government has controle and the ability to tax it.

thank god | 8/17/2006, 1:45 pm EST

god bless Colorado. I lived in Fort Collins for most of my life and i can already guarantee that if pot is legalized there not only will the crime rate drop drastically, but so will pot usage!! b/c half the people only do it bc they feel it is their only way to show that they stand against such an injust, racist law system! btw, I dont even smoke weed!!

Capitalist Pig | 8/17/2006, 6:33 pm EST

Why do these people think me and Tim are the same? We disagree on pretty much every issue. I do not even know what the man looks like. Someone please explain these crazy theories, please.

C Co... aka I Smell Propaganda | 8/17/2006, 8:42 pm EST

From a basic stance, I do agree with making pot legal to smoke. For one, I think it would cause less crime in the drug trade. Look at what happened after the 21st Amendment was put into place. Crime, taking place due to alcohol being traded and consumed after the 18th Amendment (prohibition), went down dramatically. Making pot legal might be able to eliminate or lessen a lot of crime associated with the sale of the drug. The downside, however, is that now you have another mind altering drug available to a lot of people not mature enought to use it. Drunk driving is a big problem today and you don’t want to have a similar problem with pot. Strict laws would need to be put into place to assure that people use it safely and responsibly. We don’t want the world to become a huge Cheech and Chong movie.

P.S. Interesting point, by the way, Zach. That definately might have something to do with it. Although, if was made legal throught the country, the government would probably find a way to tax it too.

KJB | 8/18/2006, 3:52 pm EST

“i can already guarantee that if pot is legalized there not only will the crime rate drop drastically, but so will pot usage!!”

Most asinine quote of the day…

greenfriend | 8/18/2006, 5:27 pm EST

Hey Zach the governments biggest issue is that they can’t control it because if it were legal people could grow it in their own backyard. Building a still is a little more technical, though still(ha ha) not that difficult to achieve it’s beyond what most people are willing to do. Planting a seed and watching it grow on the other hand………
And as a final word lets not forget the big pharmacuetical companies. It’s in their best intrest to keep pot illegal as well. After all who needs excedrin when you’re too chilled out to get a headache.

california chick | 8/18/2006, 6:21 pm EST

Take a clue from California. The affects from a joint are not as bad as drinking. You can still say your abc’s. Even the more potent stuff doesn’t make you pass out after inhaling unless you stand up real quick. ha ha
No but really I think the government doesn’t want it legal because you can’t tax it.
Aren’t they going to ban smoking all together because the big tobacco companies decieved the public from the beginning about the dangers?
To Smoke or not to Smoke, to drink or not to drink, to eat too much or not to eat too much.
Is big brother crossing the line?

Jack D | 8/19/2006, 4:37 pm EST

They’re just worried that if they let us do what we want that a good number of us will die young and never get to include our taxes to feed the war machine, and their pockets.
Hey serious people…it was a joke, calm down.

Dave N | 8/20/2006, 2:11 pm EST

I think its illegal because nobody in office has the guts to push for it.
Among the elitists and pretentious marijuana is frowned upon as an artifact of drug addicts and teenagers, whereas beer/wine can be justified in a social scene. Forget what is practical or just, politicians are concerned with re-election and legalizing marijuana is a risk. The image could ruin your carrer. Who wants to take that when there are more dire issues at hand?

Highlands Ranch,CO Father of 2 | 8/20/2006, 6:03 pm EST

It would be interesting to see where we would be right now if cannabis and alcohol laws were flip-flopped in the 1930’s. We would live in a much happier and less violent world.

The government is lying to us about marijuana being addictive and having no medicinal value. If we never questioned our government the women and blacks wouldn’t be voting this November. Think about it.

KJB | 8/21/2006, 2:38 am EST

Marijuana makes you a f’cking idiot. I like to get stupid once in awhile, but there’s a reason why it’s illegal.

If you can’t figure that out, you probably smoke a little too much.

Highlands Ranch,CO Father of 2 | 8/21/2006, 2:55 am EST

Hmmmmmm, what are the odds KJB had a few drinks before his post?

Like I said before …

KJB | 8/21/2006, 11:35 am EST

Oh, that’s right…Weed RAISES your IQ and cognitive reasoning. Silly me, how could I forget?

By this logic, that means most of the dope-smokers should vote Republican, right?

Jack D | 8/21/2006, 12:17 pm EST

KJB,
No one is saying mary jane dosen’t have her effects. The point is that it IS safer than alcohol. There are no physiologicaly addictive qualities, only psycho-sematic. It does not make you desire more dangerous drugs. The ONLY things it causes outside of what alcohol and cigarettes cause is mellowness and the munchies.

Capitalist Pig | 8/22/2006, 6:06 pm EST

As I stated earlier I think it is stupid for the pro weed people to try convince people that weed has no ill effects. All drugs have negatives, all drugs have potential negative side effects on some people and all drugs can be abused and addictive. Just because a drug does not cause physical addiction does not mean it is not addictive. The fact is cocaine is not physically addictive, but that does not make it safe. psychological addiction is just as bad as physical addiction, you are still an addict. Most people who use alcohol are not alcoholics and will never suffer negative side effects from drinking, but that does not make it a “safe drug”.

The whole alcohol vs. weed argument is also pointless, and probally counter productive. The damage caused to individuals and to society by alcohol are well known. Like it or not, for better or worse, alcohol is here to stay, and those that drink are not going to suddenly give up alcohol and switch to pot if pot is legal. They are different drugs with different effects. The pot vs. alcohol argument simply creates an us vs. them mentality and alienates people who use alcohol, thus creating less support for the cause.

As for the whole tax issue, the goverment could easily tax pot. In fact the drug was first outlawed using the tax code. The goverment would simply require a tax stamp in order to possess the drug.

thank god – Give the race card a rest. Blaming everthing on racism has grown old, and no one listens when you do, you are simply crying wolf.

Steve Fox | 8/24/2006, 12:50 pm EST

Mr. Pig -

As one of the organizers of the SAFER campaign in Colorado, I just wanted to make one point clear. We are not trying to create a marijuana versus alcohol argument with the goal of encouraging people to use marijuana instead of alcohol. And we know, as you say, that alcohol is here to say. All we are saying is that marijuana is simply less harmful than alcohol and it therefore makes absolutely no sense to PUNISH adults for choosing to use the less harmful substance.

Along the same lines, we never say that marijuana is harmless (although we certainly point out that many of the “harms” have been greatly exaggerated in the past). We simpy say that it is less harmful to the user and less harmful to society than alcohol. We have many studies, including those from the U.S. and Canadian governments, to back us up. So, again, based on RELATIVE harms, we feel that adults should be able to use marijuana instead of alcohol, if that is what they prefer.

If you consider this debate pointless, that is your issue.

Capitalist Pig | 8/24/2006, 9:28 pm EST

Steve Fox – If you read what I have posted I have stated I think Marijuana legal. I stated in my original post that I think the entire drug war is a terrible failure and the wrong approach to the problem of drug addiction.

My post concerning alcohol vs. weed was in response to some of the other posters on here, and most people I know that use the drug.

I personally do not smoke weed or drink alcohol. And I do not live in Colorado, though I have visted and found it to be quite beautiful, so the whole thing is irrelevent to my life. But I do find it amazing I actually agree with the cause and have been critizied by those who agree with the cause and those who don’t.

Racism and the Drug War | 9/6/2006, 1:46 am EST

Actually, racism is at the root of the “drug war,” and there is no so-called “crying wolf” here.

The prohibition of cannabis was created during a time when racism was government policy — Jim Crowe laws were thriving, whites wanted Mexicans out of the south, etc.

The politician (and first “Drug Czar”) that made marijuana illegal, oddly stressing that it be called “marijuana” and not the proper name, cannabis (encouraging the link to Hispanics), publicly declared this:

“…the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.”

and

“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

To say that racism is not tied to the drug war is disingenous and careless at best.

Here’s what a newspaper editorialized in 1934, shortly before cannabis was made illegal: “Marihuana influences Negroes to look at white people in the eye, step on white men’s shadows and look at a white woman twice.”

It is a sad but true fact that this whole situation is BS and needs to be struck down. Also, do some searches on incarceration rates of blacks versus whites, especially in relation to drugs convictions. Judging by your comments, you might be very surprised by what you find.

What can you say about a magazine that sells its largest and most prominent ad space to a cigarette maker?

In our opinion, the war on drugs should not included marijuania. Instead , it has turn into a war on on the infringement of rights. What does it matter if you are not harming anyone… Everything told on marijuania that we’ve came accross has been all proproganda and lies..Users are portrayed in a stereotypical light. Also, how often do they portray that it burns brain cells, ruin lives, and is addivtive,, Look at the stats cigarettes is far more addicting and alot harder to kick the habit.. You think that it is because the authories get alot more revenue from busting users than taxing it –if it were legal,And, as for burning brain cells, the environment does has more pollutans in it to do tha by itself.. I should know , the doctors say that may be the reason I got Parkinson Disease at 26,,,,Now, at 41, I’m not sure I can last longer.. But, I know that smoking a j to ease the pain, in my case, or just to relax anyone was what God prolly intended. So its not “pot” the ruins lives it is the law that says its wrong,, The are making criminals out of some honest god working people..There is always it abusers I agree the dealers can be bad … If it were legal then the dealers do not have as much an interest in it.. Society creates and defines it own outlaws. Kids today say it easier to get a “j” than a cig.. Now, there is something wrong there…Being that nictoine is the most addictve out there, it should not be attainable… you also hear how bad pot is???Being worse than cigs as they let us percieve, why don’t they legalize it and take it off the streets outta kids of the kids and dealer that lace it at times
